Cole wandered further ahead of the scene, and the people, before she pulled her phone out. She pressed on her home number, only waiting for one ring.
"What's wrong?"
It was Peter.
"Where's Mara?"
"Out. You've barely been gone for two hours. Isn't it a little early for chaos?"
"Someone found a body in the woods."
They both stopped talking for a second as a second scream sounded. Cole turned to see some blonde girl running towards the body. Peter replied after a brief pause.
"I suppose not. Did you see anything?"
"Yeah, and now my coach thinks I'm a sociopath."
"Well you tell him just because you were raised by one doesn't mean anything."
Cole let out a small laugh at that.
"Yeah I'll tell him Batman was a sociopath with dead parents, and he turned out great."
"There you go. We can talk about what you saw when you get home. Go back with everyone else. Unless you're feeling like meeting whoever is running around stringing up teens."
"And what if I do?" She teased.
"Yeah yeah, go find your sister, tough guy. I'll call the school."
"We really don't need to leave. Class hasn't even started."
"Just do it."
"I have detention."
There was another pause, and she could audibly hear surprise in his voice.
"What did you do now?"
"Touch an active crime scene."
There was a pause, then a low chuckle on the other side of the call.
"Just drop your sister off home then. See you later."
Cole laughed and threw her phone in her pocket, heading back in the direction of the school. The cops rushed her along, as well as everyone else. She sped walked, looking around for the boys. She found them by the same locker. She could tell things were getting heated so she stayed back.
" Oh, you think it's a coincidence they turn up and then people start dying?" Isaac griped.
"Well, no, but I still don't think it's them." Stiles shot back. "Scott?"
"How 'bout you?" Isaac asked, looking at the older beta. He had a deep look of thought, his brows furrowed.
"I don't know yet."
Cole rolled her eyes at that. It seemed pretty clear.
"You don't know yet?" Stiles exclaimed, dramatically exasperated, though he had an excuse this time in all fairness.
"Well, he's got a point. Seriously, dude, human sacrifices?" Scott shot back. Stiles looked at him blankly for a moment before speaking slowly.
"Scott, your eyes turn into yellow glow sticks, okay? Hair literally grows from your cheeks and then will immediately disappear, and if I were to stab you right now, it would just magically heal, but you're telling me that you're having trouble grasping human sacrifices?"
Scott looked down, thinking for a moment.
"That's a good point too." He said looking back up at Isaac, who furrowed his brows in anger.
"I don't care. They killed that kid, they killed the girl that saved me. I'm gonna kill them too." He shot back, before storming off ahead of them to the school.
Cole watched Isaac speed off in the opposite direction, before deciding to just head back towards her sister's locker.
"Yeah, somehow I knew I should have hung around." Cole stated absent-mindedly, looking at Isaac as she made her way to the table behind him. He scowled at the table as she walked past.
"In retrospect I hope you realize you gave them exactly what they wanted."
She was of course referring to the twins, who had most definitely tricked Isaac into getting detention.
Before Isaac could formulate a response, Mr Harris strode into the room.
"Welcome to detention!"
He said it with a sick grin on his face. It only widened when he spotted Cole.
"Making a good impression already Miss Hale?"
She laughed, challenging his grin with a dark, low grin.
"Oh, you just wait till you find out." She shot back.
He eyed her closely, his grin dropping, before turning back to the rest of the class. He took attendance, before breaking people into teams to work.
"You two wash the boards." He commanded, sending two students closest to the door out.
"Reshelving the library." He instructed the middle row. Those two left, leaving only two.
"Restocking the janitor's closet." He said, pointing at them.
Cole rolled her eyes. Isaac whipped around looking at her then back to Mr. Harris who was walking to his desk.
"Does it have to be with her?"
Cole made an astonished face, acting personally offended.
Harris paused for a moment looking between the two students.
"Now that I know you don't want to… Yes, you have to." He smiled up at Isaac from his leaned back position.
"Great." Isaac muttered, as Cole stood up, laughing. She patted him on the back as she went past.
"I'm not that bad."
He rose and followed her out of the class, where a cart full of cleaning stuff sat. He moved to push it as she went to pull. They both held their ground, ending up rolling the cart fairly awkwardly together down the hall.
Once they arrived, they stood on either side of the closet with the cart in the middle, packing rolls of bathroom tissue, and cleaners on the shelves. They were mostly quiet.
Cole could sense Isaac was tense, but as they hit 15 minutes in there, his breathing was almost ragged. His heart hadn't stopped beating faster since they entered the small space, so clearly it wasn't her. She turned away from her shelf to face him.
"Isaac?"
He turned to meet her questioning gaze. He shrugged, playing it off.
"I'm ok. I just don't like small spaces." He replied, turning back to look at the bottle in his hands.
It seemed like it was a lot more than a dislike.
She turned back to placing paper towels on a shelf.
"Can I ask you a question?" She turns back towards him slightly, still unloading her side.
He was quiet for a moment before turning the same way she had.
"Do you have to?"
She continued anyway.
"How did you get into all this?"
He was quiet for another moment.
"Why do you care?"
She shrugged.
"I'm curious. Indulge me."
He huffed in amusement.
"You're morbidly curious." He replied, before answering. "I used to work in a graveyard. My machine turned over on me and Derek saved me."
"He's your knight in shining armor." Cole fake swooned, making herself laugh. Isaac turned back towards his side.
"You're hilarious."
"I hope you aren't taking the teasing too hard. You are the youngest after all. Ask my little sister, she's got a pretty thick skin these days."
Isaac turned back towards her.
"Is that some kind of half ass apology?"
She shrugged
"If you need one?"
Isaac scoffed at her, but couldn't help a chuckle. She smiled back at him.
Then the door slammed behind them.
Isaac dropped whatever was in his hand, heading straight to the door. Cole followed him as he grabbed the knob. He shook it violently, before slamming himself against the door. Cole touched his arm gently, catching his frantic glare.
She tried to descalate.
"Relax Isaac, it's probably locked from the outside."
"No, there's something on the other side." He replied, panic in his voice growing. He ripped his jacket off, his breath getting more and more laboured.
"Are you sure?"
He started knocking on the door, causing her to lose her grip. Then he started banging and muttering to himself. He was spiralling and she needed to do something fast.
"Isaac, it's okay. We're okay."
"Come on!" He yelled, slamming his fists against it, making Cole jump. He started punching the door and screaming.
Cole watched in shock for a moment. She had never seen anyone snap that fast, and never would she expect it from a wolf. She was learning all kinds of new things at school.
"Isaac you have to breathe." She said, tone firm, as she reached out to pull on his arm. It was futile. He wasn't listening.
He did slow to a stop, finally.
His head dropped low, as well as his heartbeat but now she had a new problem.
"Isaac?" She called out to him. He looked up, eyes bright and shining. His pupils were barley visible. Hers flashed in response. He growled.
"Isaac, don't." She said backing up, arms raised defensively. He tensed and crouched low.
Too late for talking.
Isaac shot out at her, and she spun left, ducking under him. He crashed into the shelf, knocking over the cart. All the newly stocked products crashed to the floor as he landed on all fours.
Cole now had her back to the door, and she could tell he was preparing to jump again. She braced herself, when suddenly light flooded from behind her. He pounced again, and she sidestepped, turning with him as he flew past. She grabbed him at the last second, using their momentum to slam him downwards. Her hand wrapped around his neck as they crashed to the floor, the rest of her pinning him down.
Her eyes flashed again, but this time her fangs shot out too. She looked down into the feral eyes below hers, and screamed at him in a deep guttural roar.
"Isaac!"
She watched as the gold in his eyes flickered, the human side returning to control. As he relaxed, her grip relaxed and eventually she lowered herself to the floor beside him.
She was fairly shaken. There had been a few times she had seen older wolves use the technique, usually alphas, and it was always quite intense. She had never tried before, but she was lucky it worked.
She looked up to find Scott, wide eyed, staring down at her. She stuck her hand out, gesturing at him when he didn't catch on. He reached out then to help her up.
"Are you okay?" He asked, as she steadied herself. She looked at the out of place vending machine that had clearly been blocking the door. She shrugged.
"I will be, when I kick the shit out of whoever did this."
"I'm sorry, I didn't... I didn't mean to do that."
Isaacs voice made them both jump and they looked down at him. His head was in his hands, his whole body curled into itself where he sat.
"I'm okay, Isaac." She reiterated, noticing the slight rock he had taken.
"I'm so sorry." He repeated, making her frown. Looking at him was making her stomach turn. The anxiety she could smell on him was nowhere near normal. There was something so clearly wrong with him.
"It's not your fault, Isaac." She said softly, her tone surprising Scott as she leaned down and placed a hand on Isaacs knee. He finally looked up.
"I guess now we know they wanna do more than get you angry." Scott added and Isaac looked up at him.
"So we are going to do something?"
Scott grinned, almost maniacally. Cole watched him with curiosity.
"Yeah, I'm gonna get them angry. Really angry."
Cole looked between the two boys, who were clearly forming some kind of terrible plan. She toyed with the idea of helping before thinking better of it, she stood up.
"Just don't get your asses kicked like I would if I stayed here to babysit you two." She offered instead, before turning and walking off. She threw a small wave over her shoulder as they both muttered bye. She continued down the hall, headed for the front doors.
Hope you enjoyed! Chapters like this that show relationships developing between the two packs are my favorite. It continues in the next one from Mara's perspective which is even better than this one. Leave a comment and let me know what you think?
