Like Dally said, there was a freight train that was about to leave. We had to wait in the weeds for the railroad workers to pass by. As soon as they walked by, we ran and pulled ourselves into an open box car.

Not long after, the train started up. Johnny set the gun down next to him carefully.

I leaned on my brother's shoulder. He put his arm around my waist and held me close.

I couldn't help but realize just how much trouble we're in. Johnny had actually killed someone and stabbed another person. He normally wouldn't hurt a fly...

We were actually running away from our problems, with the cops after us for murder and assault. Having a gun with us didn't help our case. Man, we should've asked Dally if he had cigarettes because I really needed one.

I curled up into a ball with my legs pulled up, letting myself lean on my brother. I was so tired that the loud rattling of the train didn't even keep me awake. I fell asleep in a used leather jacket and a gun in Johnny's hand.

By the time we made it, I was still half asleep. Pony was hardly awake as well when we jumped off the train and into a field. The water on the grass had made me become fully awake.

We lay in the grass for a few minutes, catching our breaths. I saw that dawn was approaching, the lighting was a shade of pink mixed with gold. The meadowlarks were singing also.

That let us know that we were in the country. Our dream had come true; we were in the country. "Have any idea where Jay Mountain is? It'd be easier if we had a mp or something." I said, taking off the jacket and tying it around my waist.

"Not a clue. Maybe we can ask someone. Story won't be in the paper yet." Johnny suggested, using a stick to help him walk since he had a hurt ankle. "Why can't you or Bex do it?" Pony asked, his thumbs hooked in his jeans.

"You look more like a farm boy, Pony. I look nothing of the sort." I said, crossing my arms. "I do not." he said. I looked over my brother, his long hair was combed back and a slouching stride that was a habit he possessed. "Yeah, and my ankle's hurt and I don't want to walk on it." Johnny answered.

Johnny didn't look like a farm boy at all and I didn't look like a farm girl, or a girl who is married to a farm boy. Johnny looked hard and tough because of his jean jacket and black t-shirt. Even his hair was long and greased.

As for me, I looked like some punk-rock chick that's into Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, or Paul McCartney. Even my greasy hair gave off a rocker chick vibe.

"Alright, I'll go with you. Johnny?" I say, looking at Johnny. "You two go on. I'll stay here. Ask the first person you see where Jay Mountain is." Johnny replied, leaning on that large stick, "Then come back. And both of y'all comb your hair. Pony, quit slouching like a thug."

Pony pulled his comb from his back pocket and combed his hair back carefully. Afterwards, he hands it over to me. I comb mine back but made sure to keep bangs looming over my face before handing it back to Pony.

"We look okay now?" Pony said as we both looked at him. I could see that he was studying us. "What is it?" I asked, seeing just how he was looking at us.

"Both of you guys look an awful like Sodapop. But both of you guys have green eyes considering you two are twins." Johnny points out. Pony and I looked at each other, his eyes were more grayish than mine.

"No, mine are grayish-green. Hers are more green." Pony said, making a point that my eyes are way more green than his. "Besides, Soda is more handsome." I say, finding myself blushing a bit. Kind of an odd thing to say about my brother.

"Shoot, Pony's handsome too. And Bex, you're pretty." Johnny said with a smile. I blushed madly when he said that. That was... really sweet of him to say.

Pony and I climbed over the barbed wire fence and began trying to find someone. We strolled down the red dirt road. Before getting too far, I looked back at Johnny.

Red colored my cheeks when I looked at him. This didn't go unnoticed by Pony and he nudged me in the ribs. "Bex, how come you're blushin'?" he asked.

"What? What're you talkin' about?" I answered. "The way you looked at Johnny, your face went red." Pony said. "Oh... no it isn't." I lied, trying to cover it up.

"Bexley, I know you well enough to know that you are lyin'." Pony said, giving me an unconvinced look. I knew that he wasn't falling for my lie. "Oh... I guess when he called me pretty, it struck a nerve." I answer.

"Oh, Bex! Don't tell me that..." Pony gasped teasingly, maybe a bit overexaggerating. "Oh, shut your trap. I just appreciated his compliment. I don't like him like that. He's my buddy as much as yours, nothing more." I say, punching him in the shoulder. "I was startin' to think you did like him." Pony said.

All I did was roll my eyes at what he said. While walking, I began wondering what Darry and Soda are doing at this very moment. Probably worrying their heads off about us because of how we took off running last night.

I wonder if Darry is even sorry for hitting Pony and I. I also knew that he'd worry even more when he finds out that Johnny, Pony, and I had killed that soc.

When I blinked, I could see what Soda's face was when he'd heard about it. "Pony, do you miss home?" I asked, feeling a bit homesick. "Shoot, a lot. Why do you ask?" Pony wondered.

"Just wondering... Guess I'm feeling a little homesick." I admit, rubbing my bare arms. "Hey, it'll be alright, you hear? Nothing's gonna happen with us. Pretty sure that we'll return home after the story has died down." Pony assured, giving me a caring look. I could see that he was feeling the same, his eyes showed it.

It was hard to believe that just last night we were in the Drive-Inn, watching that movie. We sat behind those two girls. There was an overwhelming feeling of being rushed, it was all happening so fast.

Nothing could get worse than getting into trouble for murdering someone. We'd all be in hiding for the rest of our lives. Dally was the only person who knew where we were and he couldn't tell anyone because he'd get into trouble two for harboring three wanted individuals.

Not to mention, he'd get into trouble for lending us that gun. Johnny would surely get the electric chair if he was caught. If they caught Pony and I, we'd be sent into a reformatory. There was even a chance that we'd never see Darry and Soda again. There are worse things than being a greaser.

We then find this older, sunburned man who was having lunch by an oil rig. We walk up to him and Pony waves at him to get his attention. "Excuse us, can you tell us where Jay Mountain is?" Pony called, raising his voice over the loud noise of the oil rig.

"What?" the man called, not hearing what he said. "Jay Mountain! Do you know where it is?" I say, making sure that he could hear me. The man pointed down the road.

"Follow that road to that big hill over there. That's it. You two taking a walk?" the man answered. Heeding what Johnny said, Ponyboy said, "Yessir, we're playing army and we have to report to headquarters."

"What about the young lady here? She your captain or somethin'?" the man asked, pointing towards me. "Oh, yeah. I'm actually second in command." I tell him, finding it spooky that Pony and I were good liars.

We then leave the man to do whatever work he's doing. Johnny was still waiting for us by the time we got back. We told him where it was and we headed in that direction.

The three of us walked down the road to the church. It was about a 45 minute walk to get there. While walking there, my feet were aching and my eyes were starting to get heavy.

I also swayed a little bit, which is something that commonly happens when I'm tired. Pony always looked like he was drunk despite him never touching a drop in his life. Johnny was more tired than the both of us because he had stayed awake for a majority of the trip here.

The Church that the trio is hiding in. (Church from original movie of The Outsiders)

We make it to the church. It was small, spooky, and covered in cobwebs. But that mattered little. The three of us climbed in the back window.

This wasn't the first time that Pony and I have been in a church. We used to go a lot when we were younger, even after our parents died. Pony even talked Soda into coming with Johnny, Pony, and I.

Needless to say, he didn't want to come unless Steve was there. Pony, Johnny, and I usually sat in the back, trying to get something from the sermon and doing our best to avoid the people there. We weren't exactly dressed our best during that time.

The reason we stopped going is because Soda, Steve, and Two-Bit were horsing around and Steve dropped a hymn book accidently, causing an explosive bang. The people went silent and looked back at us. It was so embarrassing.

Pony got a creepy feeling from this church. Needless to say, I had it too. I sat down on the floor and laid down on my side, using my arm as a pillow and my jacket to keep me warm.

Ponyboy was laying next to me while Johnny stretched on the ledge above us. The floor was hard and cold. I felt too sleepy to even speak, so I did fall asleep. Johnny and Ponyboy were already sleeping as well.
