I own nothing but the plot and the twins
Where there's smoke there's...bacon?
Brett Pov
"Dear Diary, it has now been about eight hours since I found out that Reagan and I are having twins and the shock has mostly worn off." Brett states while speaking into his tape recorder. "The fainting was a bit embarrassing, but Reagan got a good laugh out of it at least which eased so of her tension about the ba-ah babies." Brett could still remember the car ride back to Reagan's apartment and the many jokes that Reagan had made at his expense throughout the trip home...and while he was cooking them dinner...and while they were eating dinner...and while he was making her breakfast and lunch for the following day. He didn't mind the jokes much though, even he could admit that his fainting because he found out they were having twins was funny. "Raising twins will be challenge that I hadn't been prepared for, but it should be a lot of fun too!" Brett said while still speaking into his tape recorder. "For now I'll just try to get some sleep, tomorrow will be a big day. Reagan and I have agreed to tell 'the gang' about the baby...ah excuse me babies, or as Reagan puts it as quote 'we might as well get it out of the way.' I can't wait to give everyone their couples of the twins ultra sound pictures and their new mugs!"
With that said Brett tried to get comfortable in his makeshift bed from inside of his car, in an effort to be within reach in case of an emergency Brett was now sleeping in his car which was parked outside of Reagan's apartment building. He had been doing this since it was confirmed that Reagan was actually pregnant, the last thing he wanted was for something to happen to Reagan and for him to be so far away that he couldn't help her. It wasn't very comfortable but this was only temporary until they found a good house for themselves and their twins. Brett was just starting to get settled in the backseat of his car when he suddenly noticed a bit of smoke coming out of the window in Reagan's kitchen. "Oh no, did I forget to turn off the oven?!" Brett asked himself in a panicked tone before rushing as fast as he could out of the car and towards the apartment.
Luckily he had a copy of her apartment key, which allowed him to rush inside his first priority was to go upstairs and get Reagan out of the apartment. But she wasn't in her bed. Next Brett checked the bathroom but she wasn't in there either. "Oh no, Reagan must have smelled the smoke and went to investigate." Brett was now in full panic mode as he ran towards the kitchen determined to get the mother of his children out of the burning apartment as quickly as possible. "Reagan?!" He shouted once he set his eyes on her.
"Brett? What the hell are you-" Reagan began to question in disbelief as she set down a pan.
"We've got to get you out of here!" Brett shouted as he quickly picked her up and ran towards the door.
"Brett?! What the fuck are you doing put me down?!" Reagan demanded as he continued to carry her away from her apartment.
"Not until we get far enough away from the fire!" Brett proclaims as he runs out the door.
"What fire?" Reagan asked once they were outside.
"The fire in your apartment." Brett simply stated as he continued to run.
"There's no fire in my apartment you fucking idiot!" Reagan stated while glaring at him. "Now put me down!"
"Of course the apartment is on fire!" Brett claimed still refusing to put her down. "I saw smoke coming out of the kitchen window and-"
"Brett! There was no fire!" Reagan interrupted. "I was cooking some bacon and it caused a little smoke!"
"What?" Brett questioned as he finally slowed down. "Reagan are you saying that your apartment is not on fire?"
"Of course not!" Reagan shouted at him. "And if it was do you really believe that I'd just stay inside of a burning building?!"
"Well, I thought maybe you had gone to investigate what happened and-" Brett stutters as he tries to explain himself.
"And if the building really was on fire I would have fucking left!" Reagan says in a forceful tone. "I'm not suicidal or anything!"
"Oh I guess that would explain why no one else in the building was running out." Brett says as he finally noticed the people on the street giving the two strange looks.
"If you're finished making an ass out of yourself, you can put me down so I can get back to my kitchen and turn off the stove before a real fire actually starts!" Reagan says in a huff as Brett finally sets her down. He silently follows her back into the apartment being sure to shut the door behind himself.
"I'm sorry Reagan." Brett apologizes in a sheepish tone. "I guess when I say the smoke coming from the kitchen window I panicked and-"
"How did you even see the smoke from your apartment anyway." Reagan interrupts as she turns the stove off. "Your apartment is like five or six blocks away from here and...Oh my fucking god Brett, did you set up video cameras inside of my apartment?!"
"What?! Of course not Reagan! That would be a huge violation of your trust and privacy!" Brett says defensively shaking his head at the very idea. "I saw the smoke from my car!"
"From your car?" Reagan repeats back in a confused tone. "What are you camping out in your car outside of my apartment building or something?"
"Of course I am." Brett states in an even tone. "How else am I going to be within reach if you need me? Just look at what happened today, can you image what could have happened if I wasn't there to save you from the fire!"
"There was no fire Brett!" Reagan reminds him. "You just jumped to the worse conclusion and made a fool of yourself!"
"Maybe, but until we find a house for us and the twins this is how it has to be." Brett says with a shrug. "God forbid if something really serious happened and I was too far away-"
"Brett at most you live like fifteen minutes away from here?!" Reagan states while shaking her head at him in disbelief. "And that's if you're walking!"
"Yeah but if there's a lot of people on the sidewalks then it's like eighteen minutes away!" Brett tries to argue.
"Right." Reagan says in a deadpanned tone, as she turned to face away from Brett and look down at her stomach. "Why did you two parasites have to crave bacon all of a sudden? I could have been still working on my invention-"
"I thought you said you were going to sleep?" Brett interrupts while trying to give Reagan his best glare. "You know, you should be resting as much as you can especially now that you know you're carrying twins and you know eating bacon at this time of night is not the healthiest snack for you or the twins."
"Hey it's what the twins wanted." Reagan argues rolling her eyes at him. "Geeze Brett, first you faint when you hear that we're having twins and now you're forbidding them from having bacon." Reagan then takes out a plate of bacon and begins eating it. "Sounds like your dad doesn't love you two." She says in a teasing tone as she looks down at her stomach.
"Reagan?! Don't tell them that!" Brett said in a panic tone.
"But they wanted bacon and you are telling me that I shouldn't give it to them?" Reagan continued to tease as she munched on more bacon. "Now that doesn't sound like love to me."
"Don't listen to your mom kids!" Brett exclaimed still with a bit of panic in his tone, as he kneels in front of Reagan to talk to her stomach as well. "Your daddy loves you both very much!"
"Calm down Brett!" Reagan says evenly rolling her eyes at him. "At this state they haven't even developed any sense of hearing...and even when they do it will be a few years before they can fully understand us." Reagan says as she finishes up the plate of bacon. "You shouldn't worry so much, they're not even born yet and you're the best father they could have ever asked for. Not that I have many examples of what a good father is between Rand or even Buzz Aldrin."
"Thanks Reagan." Brett says with a small smile. "I just don't want to mess up."
"Well, for starters you're not manipulating their DNA in the womb so you're at least off to a better start then Rand." Reagan said with a sigh as she remembers that bit of information.
"Well, to be fair I wouldn't even begin to know how to do something like that...not that I would or anything!" Brett states with a small chuckle. "Speaking of which though, what are you going to do when your father figures out that you're pregnant?"
"He's never going to find out." Reagan says in a deadpanned.
"But ah Reagan I don't think you can really hide a baby bump...or bumps in our case." Brett proclaims. "I mean eventually you won't be able to hide the fact that you're pregnant from everyone?"
"I'll just use the hologram to project a non-pregnant image of myself while at work." Reagan explains with a shrug. "It's got to be useful for something, he won't even have a clue as to what's going on unless he were to...I don't know actually hug me."
"Sad. But it will keep the twins DNA safe from being changed!" Brett says trying to look at the bright side of things. "Are you at least going to tell your mother about the twins?"
"Are you kidding me?!" Reagan says in an outraged tone. "As if my mom could keep that bit of information to herself without being tempted to hold it over my dad's head if she found out about my pregnancy! Besides I...haven't decided if I want her to be a part of the twins lives either."
"Why not?" Brett decided to ask.
"Ever since we found out what my-Rand did to my memories, I can't help but wonder why my mom would let him do that to me." Reagan explains in a somber tone.
"Rea, you don't know for sure if your mother-" Brett tried to counter.
"I think that she did know something." Reagan interrupts in a forceful tone. "There was something she said at her wedding to herself...about how I didn't realize how bad of a father Rand is. And even if she didn't know the details she still didn't say anything when Orin and I suddenly stopped playing together! That has to mean she knew something right?"
"Maybe." Brett just said in a equally somber tone. He knew that Reagan had a point there was a pretty good chance that her mother did know something about Rand erasing Reagan's memories of Orin out of her mind. So unless Rand erased his former wife's memories too (which was also a possible outcome knowing Rand) it was likely that Tamiko knew something and didn't say anything. The fact that Brett had spent some time in Reagan's childhood memories and saw that her mother could be just as dismissive as her father didn't help the situation either. "Well I guess since both of our parents are emotionally neglectful, these two will have to grow up without grandparents."
"Ha the twins won't need those emotionally neglectful bastards!" Reagan proclaims. "Why would they need a pair of emotionally withdrawn, narcissistic, manipulative sociopathic grandparents!"
"They don't!" Brett says nodding in agreement. "Not when they'll have us as their kickass parents, right?"
"Right!" Reagan agrees and the two high five. "They don't need to be dragged into that mess and all the depressing thoughts it brings." With that said Reagan began to yawn suddenly feeling very tired. "I swear these parasites are always making be feel so tired (yawn) I should have just created them in my lab or something." She says in a sleepy tone barely able to keep her eyes open. "I wouldn't have to thrown up as much that way."
"Maybe next time." Brett says with a chuckle as he picks her up again and carries her up to her room. "I'll be in my car if you need me." He says after helping her settle into her bed.
"No just sleep on the couch." Reagan suggests in her sleepy tone. "The twins will want bacon again around three and the last thing my neighbors need is for you to barge in screaming about a nonexistent fire again."
"I'll be sure to set an alarm." Brett proclaims. "Night BFF."
"Hmm ni" Reagan mumbled already fast asleep.
Before heading out the door Brett quickly kissed the sheets covering Reagan's stomach. "Good night kids, your daddy loves you!" With that said Brett left the room, he would have to get a few things out of his car first and then he would get himself settled on Reagan's couch at least it would be more comfortable then the backseat of his car.
cut to the next day
Today was sure to be an exciting day, not just because 'the gang' was scheduled to have their monthly team meeting all together. But it was also an exciting day because this was the day that he and Reagan agreed to tell the team about the twins. Ever since Rand had made his take over of Cognitio Inc, team meetings were the very few rare times that 'the gang' all got to be in the same room. It used to be an everyday thing when J.R. was in charge but again Rand was doing everything he could to keep the group apart.
"And I'm happy to report that the new release of the Harry Potter movie is causing the distraction we were hoping for." Gigi explains as she finishes her reports. "People on the internet are so busy arguing about whether or not J.K. Rowling should be burned at the stake, that they do not even realize that we're in the middle of an alien invasion."
"Wait, I thought you said that the aliens came in peace?" Brett asked the group clearly confused by the so called invasion.
"They both come in peace while also trying to invade." Myc begins to explain. "Every once in a while the Tangeans like to come over on their ships and fuck with people."
"Yeah, they 'pretend' to invade and we 'pretend' that we see them as a real threat." Andre adds in. "By the end of it we usually get something that could advance our own technology by like a hundred years."
"Damn aliens!" Glenn yelled as he slammed a fist on the table. "Why can't they just go back to their own country!"
"We've been over this Glenn!" Reagan says in a huff. "We 'pretend' like they're a threat and they give us advance alien technology, it's not that hard to understand!" Reagan shook her head at him again before turning to face Brett. "Alright then, before we leave Brett and I have an announcement." She then takes out a remote which shuts down all of the video cameras and microphones in the room. "Alright Brett, make it quick we have five minutes before Rand figures out I shut everything off."
"Okay!" Brett says in a cheerful tone before taking a deep breathe. "Gigi, Andre, Myc, Glenn everyone. Reagan and I have the most exciting news, Reagan's pregnant...and you're gonna be aunts and uncles!"
A/N Wonder what 'the gangs' reaction is going to be to this news? Find out next chapter.
