The Secret Life Of Casualty.
Chapter 289.
Caleb Knight is the exact opposite of Ethan. He is very quiet and shy whereas his brother liked going out, with his friends to the pub. Cal sat on the couch, watching Ethan gel his hair up in the mirror. He didn't say anything, but he wished his brother would stay in and spend some time with him, he felt lonely without him, but Ethan didn't seem to realise this.
"Bye Cal. " Said Ethan as he picked up his coat, and put it on putting his wallet in the zip part.
"Bye Ethan. " Cal replied, sadly as he heard the door to their house open and close, their mum, Matilda had left then her house in her will, as she didn't want to see her children homeless.
Cal would do absouately anything for his brother, expect steal, but he knew that he or Ethan never would.
Ethan meet his friends in the pub, not far from where he and Cal lived. His friend, Tom Kent, ordered him a orange juice.
"Thanks Tom " Ethan said as he took a sip of his drink.
Tom smiled. "No problem. "
At around midnight, Ethan left the pub to find Cal was still in the same position he was as when he left.
The next morning, Ethan's friend, Tom, had arrived at the ED, as he needed medical attention, as a result of the previous night. Jessica treated him, she took him in to cubicles and put on a pair of gloves and switched on a light. She applied pressure to the area and filled a small bowl with water she dabbed a cotton bud with caster oil and and held it to his hand as she knew the glass would come out. She dabbed on some white glue and then cleaned the area. Shen then picked up a pair of tweezers from the bowl she had placed them in to disinfect them and then picked out the glass. She x - rayed his hand. The x- ray showed that the glass had been removed, she then put a plaster over his hand.
She discharged Tom as he signed his discharge papers and left the building where he used to work.
Another patient came in and Ethan looked up. This guy looked drunk and wasn't really someone Ethan wanted to treat. He had an idea, he went to cubicles and walked in. Ethan discovered this patients name was Bob Jones and he looked unkempt with greasy hair and he had zits on his face. He wasn't someone Ethan fancied treating.
"Doctor Knight, can you treat this patient?"
"I'm busy, Doctor Hardy. " Cal told his brother.
"Doctor. Knight, " Said Ethan in a warning tone.
"I'm not doing it, Ethan. " Said Cal, fed up of his brother pushing him around.
Ethan scowled, he was angry at Cal. How dare he undermine him? Before he knew what he was doing, his arm swung out and hit Cal in the face, Cal stumbled back, as blood poured down Cal's face. He put his hand over his nose, not caring that his hands were getting covered in his blood. Ethan then shoved his brother.
Cal ran out, bloodied and battered, with tears streaming down his face, behind him, Ethan heard gasps from his colleagues, they were shocked that Ethan could do that.
Charlie walked in to the cubicle, unknown to Ethan, he had witnessed his attack on his brother. He walked in to the cubicle and asked Ethan for a word. He nodded and followed Charlie in to the office. Charlie sat down, while Ethan stood in front of him.
"You shouldn't hit your brother, Ethan" Charlie told him.
Ethan hung his head, ashamed as he said. "I know Charlie, I'm sorry "
"It's not me you should be apologising too. " Charlie told him, a dissopointed look on his face.
Mumbling again, Ethan said. "I know. " As he made his way out of the office, he jogged a little to reach the entrance, when he did he checked the area where Cal was usually found chatting up nurses, but he wasn't there. Ethan ran a hand over his face as he sighed. He wasn't sure where else to look. He headed back inside and went in to the staff room and unlocked his locker, before getting his phone. Shutting his locker door, he unlocked his phone and went through his contacts, until he got to his brothers, he sat on the couch as he waited for his brother to pick up. But it went straight to voicemail. He sighed, wondering whether to leave him a message, he decided not to and closed his phone.
Flashback
Cal was 12 and Ethan was 17, the boys were hanging out at home, as their parents were out. Cal was watching a match on TV. Ethan was in his room, trying to get in some revision as he was in university and he had some important tests coming up. But Cal wouldn't be quiet as Ethan heard the screams as Cal's favourite team scored.
He put his hands over his ears to block it out, he'd told Cal he was busy, so could he please keep the noise down, it seemed that he had taken no notice of him.
"You need to do the dishes. " Ethan told him, coming down for a bit to have a break from revision.
"But it's your turn. " Cal told his brother, pointing to the rota that was on the fridge: Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays were Cal's days to clean the kitchen, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays were Ethan's days and it was a Saturday morning.
"No, it's your turn, Cal. "
"It's not Ethan. "
"Do them. " Ethan said.
With a sigh, he pulled his chair out and went over to the sink, filling the bowl with water and squirting liquid in, before washing them, thinking it was cruel for him to do Ethan's chores.
End of flashback.
Ethan returned to their house, putting his key in the lock, to find the hallway lights off. He took off his coat and hanged it up on the banister before going in to the living room where Cal was curled up on the couch, tissues up his nostrils to stem the blood. Tears rolled down Cal's cheeks, Ethan felt bad he had done this to his brother, how could he be so horrid, he didn't like who he had become. He was like his father and that scared him.
"I'm sorry Cal, I shouldn't of took advantage of you. "
Cal glanced up at him, Ethan realised he was terrified, terrified of him, and that was because he had punched him.
Ethan sat by him and gently cuddled him, aware of his injuries.
Cal snuggled up to Ethan. "Thank you for today Ethan, " Cal said, with sincerity in his voice.
Ethan bent down and kissed his brothers forehead. "It's ok, Cal. "
Cal cuddled in to his brother as Ethan kissed his forehead, before going in to his room and getting his comforting blanket, he draped it around him and sitting back beside him and stroking his hair. He loved his brother and it hurt him to think that he was hurting him. He made a mental note never to be cruel to him again, as the next time, Cal could decide to move out and then Ethan would truly have no one and he couldn't risk loosing him.
Cal whimpered, it was clear he was in distress about something.
Flashback
Cal was a young lad, he was at home with his father, who had just lost his job, so the family were relying on Matilda's wages as a dinner lady in Call's school, to put food on the table and to clothe their boys. Cal was sat at the table, colouring.
"It's your fault, I lost my job, you stupid boy. "
Cal looked at his father, even at a young age, he knew that Ethan was the "Golden Boy. "
"Get upstairs, I don't want to see you. "
Cal ignored his father, but he soon felt his fathers hard grip on his arm, it would definitely leave a bruise.
End of flashback.
"Shh, " Ethan whispered, stroking his hair. Cal continued to whimper. Ethan stroked his cheek. Cal seemed to calm at the gentle contact and Ethan was relieved. He again kissed his forehead and got himself comfy as he knew this was going to be a long night, but he would get Cal through anything.
The next morning, Cal woke to a delicious smell coming from their small kitchen. He sniffed, wondering what the nice smell was, he decided to go and see.
Ethan was in the kitchen when Cal walked in. "Morning. " Cal said.
Ethan smiled back. "Morning Cal" He pulled out a chair for his brother as he sat down, as he asked his next question.
"What would you like for breakfast?" Ethan asked.
"Can we get pancakes like we did when we were children?" Cal asked, unknowing that Ethan had been out earlier that morning to get them.
Ethan frowned mockingly and then smiled. "Sure" He put two plates behind his back, then placed the plates down and Cal was delighted to see two pancakes covered with chocolate, whip cream and strawberry's, Ethan had the same. Ethan cut his brothers food up in to small pieces, before digging in to his own meal.
After they had finished their breakfast, Ethan left the dishes to soak in a bowl of warm water and then they walked in to the living room, both deciding to put their pj's on as they weren't in work and put on Cal's favourite DVD.
