Sorry again to the big wait in updates, I've had this in my documents for ages, but I have done nothing with it, I'm going to post the rest of this story every other day or at least try to.
Bronny9: Thank you for the review.
The Secret Life Of Casualty.
Chapter 300.
"This is Kasim Sabet " Said Iain as he wheeled the wheelchair through the ED doors. "25, involved in an RTC. He has a laceration to his head. Conscious throughout, BP is 60/ 90. His GSC is 15. "
"Cubicles Iain. " Said Zoe. "Jess, with me. "
"Sure" She replied, opening the cubicle curtain.
"That's Emma" Kasim told Zoe.
Zoe shook her head. "That's Jessica. "
"No, it's Emma. " Kasim coughed. "She has 3 grown up children. I used to date her youngest son, his name is Finn. "
"It's Harry, he died 7 years ago when he was a baby. "Zoe frowned, grabbing an oxygen mask as she ordered an head CT.
"She has 3 grown up children too, aged 30 to 25. Maybe that was before you knew her but-" Kasim tried to explain, before Zoe cut him off.
"If that was true, Jessica would have been 7 when she gave birth to her first child. " Zoe had come across teen mothers in her years at the ED, but never one as young as 7. "You've hit your head, Kasim, and sometimes that can affect your eyesight, just for a little while. I'm just going to put this mask on, that should help your breathing."
Jessica leant her arms on the Nurses Station, listening to snippets of the conversation, she rubbed a hand over her forehead, deciding to fake a headache, just as she was about to sneak off to the staffroom, Zoe put a hand on her friends shoulder.
"Jessica can you take Kasim for his CT, " Zoe asked.
"Sure " Jessica nodded, heading to cubicle 1 where Kasim was. She pulled back the curtain.
"I know what you did. " Kasim warned her.
Jessica shook her head. "Excuse me? I think your confused. Head injuries can do that. I'm here to take you for your CT scan. " She held an arm out to help him off the bed, but he pushed her aside, telling her he didn't want her near him. She pressed the button for the lift as Kasim looked at her.
Jessica and Zoe looked at Kasim's CT. Zoe pointed out the red areas on the scan.
"We'll come you in for observation, " Zoe told him. Kasim nodded but it was clear he didn't look happy.
Jessica asked Zoe to sign a form for paractmol, intending on using them for a headache, that was still bothering her, but she told her that it was for a patient.
"Cheers Zo" She replied as she took the pad off her.
"Jessica, can you take this?" Cal asked, handing her a baby girl.
"Can't you?" Jessica replied.
"I'm needed in RESUS"
"Fine" Jessica rolled her eyes, carrying the little girl in to cubicles.
"She's been crying, none stop. " Her mum told the nurse as she lay the little girl on the bed.
"OK. "
"Her name's Katie. "
"I'll give her some paracteomol that should take her temperature down, " She said as a small IV was inserted in to her arm as the medicine went through.
It was after lunch, everything fell apart for the nurse.
Mrs Daniel's, Katie's mother, burst through the doors, shouting. "My baby isn't breathing"
Jessica watched as Cal took the baby from her mother. He'd rushed her in to RESUS, before she was transferred to paediatrics.
She noticed that Cal was having a hushed conversation with Mrs Daniel's.
"Who treated your daughter?"
"A nurse, but she seemed distracted"
"Right, " Cal said, typing Katie's details in to the database.
Child's name: Katie Daniel's
Nurse: Jessica Harrison.
"Excuse me" Cal said.
"Jessica!" Cal shouted, stopping the nurse as she tried to run. Jessica swallowed and slowly turned around to Cal, the tears falling down her cheeks, dealing with a paediatric case was hard, it reminded her of things she'd rather forget.
"The baby could die, because of the amount you give her. " Cal rounded on the nurse.
"Sorry, Dr. Knight, " She replied quietly.
"Sorry isn't good enough, " Cal shouted as he watched Jessica flee. "Do you want to be responsible for a child dying?"
"I already am.."
"Jess, what's wrong?" Zoe asked, hating seeing her friend in a state.
"Cal shouted at me, " Jessica told her. She knew she sounded weak and pathetic, but she also knew that she could trust Zoe and that she would take her side.
"Cal, can I have a word?" Zoe asked, finding the doctor, at the little girl's cot, gently stroking her hand, as he gazed down at her, she reminded him of Matilda, with her brown eyes. He nodded and left the unit. Zoe headed back to her office.
"Jessica said you'd shouted at her. "
"I did. "
"Why?"
"She overdosed a baby. "
"Everyone makes mistakes. "
"If its a mistake like that, she shouldn't be a nurse. "
"She should be doing her job"
"She's a good nurse, " Zoe defended her friend.
"If you say so, " Cal muttered.
"What was that?" Zoe asked, sharply.
"Nothing"
"You can go. " Zoe told him, she needed a coffee after this. Cal left the office and walked down the stairs, noticing Ethan. Ethan walked up to him.
"You alright?" He asked.
"Fed up. " Cal sighed. "Pint?"
"Sure" Said Ethan.
The brothers arrived at the pub, and Ethan ordered them both a drink while Cal went to a booth, dropping his head in to his hands.
"There you go, " Ethan slide Cal's pint over to him as he sat down.
"Thanks mate" Said Cal, picking up the glass and taking a big sip.
"So..." Ethan started and Cal looked at him, wondering what he was going to say. "Why did you shout at her?"
Cal took another sip. "I shouted because I don't think I'm a good doctor. "
Ethan rubbed his brothers back. "Cal, you are a good doctor, you just can't go around shouting at the nurses"
"I know that Ethan. "
"Well, I think you should go and apologise. "
Cal nodded, he knew that Ethan was right.
Both of them finished their pints, and left their empty glasses on the table to be collected.
Finding Jessica, just about to get in to a taxi, Cal jogged over to her.
"Jess. "
Jessica turned around. "Leave me alone, Caleb. "
"Look. " Cal scratched the back of his neck, awkwardly, he wasn't used to making apologises. "I just wanted to say sorry, alright?"
Jessica scoffed. "You think that makes it ok?"
"No, but we have to work together. "
Jessica pulled a face, she hated arrogant doctors.
Cal walked back over to Ethan.
"Well?" Ethan asked.
"She rebuffed me. "
Ethan knew that Cal used that line when pretty girls refused to go on a date with him, but he decided against pointing this out and put his arm around him as they headed back to their flat. When they arrived, they walked up the stairs and across the landing until they come to their door, Ethan pulled his keys out of his pocket but stopped as his hands started to shake, he stared at them in horror as he felt the build of tears in his eyes, he hoped they wouldn't fall as he knew Cal would just call him a baby.
Ethan lifted his shaking hands. Cal took over with unlocking the door and gently pushing Ethan through the hallway to the living room before pushing the younger man on to the couch and turning to face him.
"Ethan, your symptons won't start for ages yet, "
"They already have!" Ethan cried in horror. Cal squeezed his hands, he knew what Ethan was like when he got panicky.
"Take a few deep breathes for me, mate. " Ethan stared at him. "Come on, Nibbles"
Deciding to do as Cal asked, as he knew he needed to breathe, he copied Cal in and out, in and out, like a paramedic had taught them in medical school. Eventually, Ethan's breathing returned to normal and Cal was relieved. Getting up, he walked in to the kitchen to get a glass of water for his brother. Handing it to him, he grabbed the TV remote and together they watched the match that Cal recorded that morning.
Thanks for reading. I've decided I'm going to pre - write the rest of this story.
