The Secret Life Of Casualty.

Chapter 308.

The petite brunette smiled as she saw her former place of work, she was really looking forward to getting back in to the swing of things. America had been good, but it was now time to return home. She looked at the kids, who were either side of her. She pushed the double doors opened and smiled weakly as she walked in; nothing had changed, she could see Zoe, and two lads.

"Zoe " Jessica said with delight, she held her arms out to embrace her old friend.

Zoe looked at her with disgust.

Jessica walked on, a feeling of hurt running through her, it was like she hated her for something. But as she walked on, other faces she hadn't seen in a while, and other faces she didn't recognise, were giving her the cold shoulder. She wondered why.

"Excuse me, " She said, quietly to a man in grey scrubs. "I'm looking for Connie Beauchamp."

Cal, who was back at work, after his injury, was flicking through a set of patient notes, turned around and for a moment, his eyes widened.

"Your Emma Barton, " Cal replied coldly.

"Who?" Jessica frowned, she had never heard of this "Emma Barton"

"My name's Jessica Harrison, I used to work here. " She explained. "I've been away for a while. I've come back as a an agency nurse to cover someone who is on holiday"

Cal snorted. "A likely story. "

"It's the truth. " Jessica whispered.

"Ethan, call, security. " Cal told his brother, holding Jessica by the wrist. Ethan nodded and got out his phone out of his pocket, before dialling the number used for their security.

"Security are on their way, Cal. " Ethan told his brother.

"Good" He said as he looked down at the woman, who was trying desperately to get out of Cal's grasp, but as he did, security grabbed her by the wrists, pushing her.

"You need to come with us. " One of the guards, a man, told her.

"No" Jessica whispered as she began to struggle, but the guards simply tightened their grip on her, she would have marks on her wrists by the time they let her go.

"Your Emma Barton, you have been fooling colleagues that you are an ex nurse, who worked here, Jessica Harrison. " The man told her.

"I am. " Jessica cried, she was desperate to be believed. If they just let her look in her handbag. She felt the guards squeeze her wrists together. "Get off!" She shouted, struggling. The man squeezed her wrists even harder.

Jessica looked up, from searching in her bag. Her face looked grey and she looked like she was about to faint.

"What?" Ethan questioned.

"I can't find my ID badge. " Jessica said quietly, looking up at Cal and Ethan.

"Because your Emma Barton" Cal shouted, aspirated. "You wouldn't have your ID badge because your not who you say you are, "

"I don't know who that is, " She replied, looking wildly between the two brothers, she didn't know why she was being shouted at.

Cal reached in to his jeans pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper and handed it to her. She unfolded it to see a picture. It was strange, the picture looked like her, but she knew it couldn't have been.

"Who is this?" She asked, she was confused.

"It's you " Cal answered.

"It's not. " Jessica glanced down at the picture again. "I promise it's not. "

"I don't believe you" Cal glanced at her like she was dirt.

"Come with us. " Security pulled her away and almost pushed her in to a room, as they shoved her up the stairs, in to a room.

Jessica stared at the woman, who was sitting in a chair. She gasped, she did look a bit like her: She had the same colour hair, their faces were the same oval shape.

"Are you Emma?" She asked hesitantly.

She nodded at the young woman in front of her.

"I'm Jessica. I'm the woman who you pretended to be. Why did you do it?"

"I just wanted to be loved" The older mum told the younger mum.

"I'm sure you are. " Jessica replied.

"I'm not. " Emma told her.

Jessica didn't know what to say, she just sat there patiently, until Emma decided to carry on talking.

"My son's hate me. "

"Oh. " Jessica said, quietly.

"I killed their father. " Emma said.

"How?" Jessica was curious.

"He slept with his sister in law while we were married, we divorced as I had done something horrible to our eldest son, Ross. " Emma explained.

"What did you do?" Jessica questioned.

"I drowned him." Emma said.

The word "drowned" sent a shiver down Jessica as she briefly thought of her own experience of being trapped under water and letting her son fall out of her arms, that was the one thing she'd always regret. She took a breath as Emma began talking.

My second eldest, son, Pete, saw me do it. He told his father, who told me to leave, I left but because of that I missed out on so much of my children's lives. " At this Emma, reached for her bag and took out her purse, unzipping it to look for a folded picture and handed it to Jessica, who unfolded it. In the picture, there was a woman, with a bobbed hairstyle, her hands on a buggy, with a baby inside, the baby looked to be a few months old.

"The baby is Finn. " Emma explained.

Jessica nodded, a baby Finn, reminded her of her own lost, baby. She handed Emma the picture back and watched as she put it back in her purse.

"He cheated on me with his former - sister - in - law, Moira. We moved in together, but he fell down the stairs, while at the hospital, I unknowingly found out, he had cheated again. When he was discharged, I said I'd look after him, I had been drugging him, convinced I was doing the right thing, I told myself, I was keeping James comfortable. I tied him up with ropes. He managed to escape, which wasn't easy on a broken leg. I followed him. I told him I heard what Ross had said in the hospital. " She swallowed, as if what she was about to say next was difficult for her. "He told me we could have had a future if it wasn't for my jealousy. I wanted a future with him but I ruined it"

"What happened next?" Jessica asked.

"I shoved James, not expecting him to fall, but he did and then it was too late. "

"Why didn't you go to the police?" Jessica asked.

"They'd have thrown me in a cell. " Emma shrugged her shoulders.

"You could have got manslaughter," Jessica said, thinking back to when she'd briefly found herself in a cell, "You didn't mean it. "

"But my boys wouldn't have seen it like that. "

"Mum?"

Both Jessica and Emma looked up to see 3 grown lads standing in the doorway and Jessica excused herself politely. She watched as the lads, all looking stony faced with anger, walked in and sat down.

"We don't know if we are ready to forgive you, it's going to take time." Pete said. "But we had to see you. "

Emma nodded.

"I'm so sorry. " Emma said.

"Why did you do it?" Asked Ross, he needed to know.

Emma shook her head. "He slept with Moira. "

"We know that. Remember when you found a black bra? I said it belonged to a one night stand of mine, it didn't, it was Moira's. " said Ross.

"I knew it, " Emma said to herself.

The 3 lads walked out, the eldest noticing that a brunette was standing near the wall.

"Who are you?" Pete said.

"I'm a mate of your mum's" Jessica said, it felt weird to think of her like that, considering she hardly knew her, but she knew deep down, she needed a friend and not to be judged for a mistake that would haunt her for the rest of her life.

"She's poison," Ross said, "She'll make your life hell, like she did dads. Dad suffered because of her. The woman is a physco"

"Maybe she was scared of loosing you boys, " Jessica suggested as she started to walk off, heading down the ED steps.

The boys all looked at each other, she had lost them once, she was still their mum, no matter what she had done. Jessica walked back in to the room

"I'm sorry I stole your identify. "

"Why?" Jessica was curious as to why

"Jess, wait. " Zoe called.

Jessica turned around and took a deep breath, moving towards Zoe.

"I'm really sorry I thought Emma was you, " Zoe said, an apologetic look on her face.

"We look alike" Jessica shrugged, but she was hurt by her friends betrayal.

"I'll make it up to you. " Zoe said.

Jessica nodded, she knew where she wanted to go. Zoe followed her as her shift had ended.

The two women sat in the older woman's car, they sat in silence for a while before she started the engine and drove out of the car park.

Jessica sat in front of Harry's grave and burst in to tears. Zoe rubbed her back. It seemed all too much for her as she got up and walked off, only to collapse in her friends arms.

The next thing Jessica knew was, she had woken up on a cubicle bed, an oxygen mask on her face, a pulse oximeter on her finger.

Zoe smiled. "Nice to see you are back with us, "

"I'm exhausted. " Jessica said.

The cubicle curtain opened and Ethan appeared with Jessica's children, Jessica smiled as a tear fell down her cheek.

"What's wrong, mum?" Amelia asked.

Jessica shook her head, she never liked upsetting her kids. She gave her children a hug. After Zoe had got her a cup of tea, and something that would give her strength, she was discharged.

"I think you owe her an apology, Caleb. " Zoe said, eyebrows raised.

Cal kept his mouth shut, until Ethan nudged him in the ribs. "You accused her of being someone else, Cal, I think she deserves an apology. "

Cal groaned, he wasn't used to giving out apologises. "Apologise now. " Ethan told him.

Cal nodded. "I'm sorry "

"It's ok, " Jessica whispered, but it wasn't, Ethan realised, as he saw tears roll down her cheeks.

"My brother can be an idiot sometimes" Ethan told her.

"She looks like Emma. " Cal said. "Ethan you've got to see that, "

"Oh, look it's the woman who builed me," Said Alicia as she walked past.

Jessica stared at her. "I haven't bullied you. I don't even know who you are, "

Alicia stepped closer as she put on a sneer. "Does this not ring any bells? She doesn't seem to care about her patients or her work."

"I didn't say that, " Jessica whispered.

Alicia rolled her eyes. "Yes, you did. "

"Dr. Monroe" Zoe said. "I will not have you talking to my friends, like that. For that reason, I'm suspending you. Go home"

Ethan and Cal looked shocked.

Zoe spoke. "I think we owe her an apology for doubting her "

And one by one, they did.

"I'm sorry, " Cal went first.

Jessica was quiet.

"Let me take you on a date, " Cal suggested.

"She's so not your type" Zoe laughed.

Charlie and Duffy walked in to the ED, Charlie was the first to see the small gang of colleagues that had circled around by the Nurses Station, he walked over.

Charlie embraced Jessica. And as they parted, he spoke. "So, what's been going on while I've been away?"

Zoe caught Jessica's eye and winked. "Nothing, Charlie, nothing"

Emma was behind them all now, they could get on with their lives, treat patients, go for a drink after work, Zoe and Jess could gossip, Cal and Ethan would fight, but all in all, life would return to normal.

After the shift had ended, Jessica and Zoe headed to the pub while Ethan offered to mind her kids, while her and Zoe went out to the pub, to catch up. Zoe brought them both a vodka and coke.

Jessica pulled a face as the liquid slipped down her throat, Zoe guessed she didn't like the rough liquid. She coughed as Zoe rubbed her back.

"Still not a drinker?" Zoe questioned, a smirk on her face.

"No" Jessica laughed, as Zoe smiled, she loved having her friend back and even though, they had hit a rough patch when Zoe had slept with her ex, but Jessica had eventually forgiven her and they were now goodish friends and they both knew that friends were hard to find, so keeping hold of friendships were important to both women.

Zoe took a sip of her drink as Jessica reapplied her lipstick, as she waited for her friend to come out of the bathroom. They both left the pub and got a taxi back to Jessica's

Jessica thanked Ethan for minding her children and then took them back to the flat as she stopped off at the shop to get something for their tea. She brought chicken nuggets and chips and chucked them in to the oven and set them on for 15 minutes. Her

"Why are you hugging us?" Amelia asked.

Jessica looked at her daughter and smiled.

Jessica's POV

I'd never had my life stolen by anyone before, but I believe everyone deserves a second chance, we don't know what goes on in other peoples lives. It's unfair to judge people as we don't know as they could be hiding a secret, like Emma was, but Emma was ill. I hope she is going to be ok and get the help and support that she needs.

End of Jessica's POV

"Because I love you, " Jessica replied, kissing both of her kids, she loved her children with all her.

"We love you too mum, " Both of her kids replied and Jessica was touched to

"I know" Jessica replied.

Jessica placed the plates down on the kitchen table and poured the kids two drinks and then went to clean the small kirchen.

Jessica was just about to go to see if the kids were ok when there was a knock at the door. She walked out in to the hallway and unlocked the door.

"I want to know what you know about Mum, " Said the man,

"Not sure" Jessica replied,

"You must know" Ross replied, trying to force his way in to her house.

"Sorry mate" Jessica said, stunning herself, she'd never called anyone "mate" before in her life. But she'd heard Zoe say it. "She's a friend, that's all. "

"Thanks a lot. " Ross snarled before walking away, a moody look on his face.

His brother Pete ran towards him. "Mate, whatever is going on with mum, it's not her fault"

"She killed our dad"

"She had issues," Added in, the youngest Finn.

"Like?" Ross spat.

"Post natal depression, dad cheating on her with Auntie Moira "

"No excuse to kill. "

"It was an accident, " Finn defended her.

Both Ross and Pete turned to face their youngest brother. They couldn't believe it.

"You brought her in to our lives, " Pete growled, suddenly pinning the youngest to the wall. "So dads death is on you"

"Pete" Ross exclamated as he watched Finn tried to struggle, but as Pete held him firmly in place, it was a pathetic attempt. Pete eventually released his brother and walked off, as Finn rubbed his throat, where a red mark was forming. Toss rang the three brothers a taxi, to drive them to their nanna's house.

Sat in her bedroom, Jessica looked through her phone, smiling at the pictures of her children, her most prized was a picture of her children: Lucas, Amelia and baby Harry on her wedding day, she stared at the cheeky face of her little boy. A tear rolled down her cheek, as the years went by, she missed Harry less, but he'd always be with her, she seen it, everytime, she looked at Adam, and even though they were split up, they still had their little boy in common. She wiped her eyes, as they had become wet with tears, as they always did, when she thought about Harry, unable to believe she'd let him slip out of her arms as she'd struggled under the ice, cold water, she'd lived with that guilt for a long time, wished she hadn't woken from her coma and had been devastated to find she had, the ventilation tube had been stuck down her throat, breathing for her, the NG tube was up her nose, the pulse oximeter on her finger, medical equipment that was keeping her alive, the sounds of the monitors beeping at a steady pace, informing Adam that while his wife lay unconscious, she was in a stable condition, with doctors treating her, informing Adam that they wanted to wake her up, after removing the ventilator Adam waited until the doctors left the room, to see if she would speak.

"Adam?" She'd whispered, her voice, scratchy because of the tube.

"Hey"

"He's gone hasn't he?"

"I'm sorry Jess"

Jessica hated reliving that memory. But she had to move forward, keep going to be the best mum she could be for her children, before they turned in to teenagers and were to embarrassed to be seen with their mum. Jessica was never liked that as a teenager, she loved hanging out with her mum, who had died from cancer when she was in her 20's, she had found out she was pregnant with Amelia a few days later and she delivered months later with her husband Sean by her side, two years later, she'd discovered she was pregnant again, this time with a boy, who she

Ross, Finn and Pete returned to their Nana Barton's home, where they had been staying when Finn and Kasim split up, and the boys knew the elderly lady needed comforting over her son's death, she had lost both of her son's in a car crash and Finn didn't think his nan would hold on much longer, he secretly suspected she would die from a broken heart. It didn't help that Nanna Barton and Emma had never seen eye to eye. Thinking about his mum, brought tears to his eyes, wondering if he'd ever see her again, as much as Pete and Ross, seemed to think they were rid of her, Finn knew his mum thrived on loving her boys and that, that love would continue until she lost her life. He felt sad for the loss of his dad James and his uncle John, but until they meet again, him, Ross and Pete would live with their memories.

"Mate" Said Ross, entering Finn's room. "Want a game?" He asked, holing out the X- box controller.

Finn wasn't a gamer, but he agreed and followed Ross to the small living room.

"Where's Nanna Barton?" Finn asked, sitting on the couch.

Ross switched on the machine.

That's what brotherly love was about, three brothers together.

Back on the Farmead Estate, Ethan and Cal were having a similar brotherness moment, they were sat in the living room, arms around each other, both sipping hot chocolates to warm them up on this cold day,

"Mate" Cal turned to his younger brother.

"Why do you see the good in people?"

Ethan knew Cal was referring to Emma and shrugged his shoulders. "Me and you both know what that's like. "

"What do you mean?" Ethan asked.

"Matilda adopted us because Emile couldn't cope, right?"

"Right" Ethan nodded, wondering where Cal was going with this.

"She thought she was doing the best for us by giving us up, "

Ethan nodded again.

"So, maybe, Emma thought she was doing the right thing, "

"Maybe" Ethan repeated.

"We all make mistakes Cal" Ethan replied, thinking back to the time when Cal had kept from him the new that he had the dreaded gene.

"Thanks for the reminder" Cal said, bluntly.

"Sorry"

Ethan put his arm around his brother, "I love you, Cal. "

"I love you, too, Nibbles"

The end! (Not the end of the actual story, I realised as I wrote that some people would think I was ending this story, I'm not, just the little story about Jessica. (although there is a chance, she'll probably pop up in other prompts) This story, will one day, end, but for now, I have some good chapters that people have asked for and I will write them up as soon as possible, might get a few out today if I can.

Thank you to everyone who has read and reviewed this story, and left reviews on it, it meant a lot to me when I knew there have been quite big gaps to this story, it's really meant a lot to me, considering it was the first time I've attempted to pass one character off as another, I hope I've managed it.

Next chapter: Cal has separation anxiety. Prompted by Guest. I think it will be up in a few days.
