The Secret Life Of Casualty.
Chapter 442.
Now, Iain and Ruby knew what they were having, a spare bedroom in the house had been transformed in to a nursey; two cots stood in the room, with blankets, folded neatly at the bottom, one in light blue, the other in light pink. Shelves were packed with nappies, baby wipes, baby toys that Robyn had given them, saying that Charlotte no longer played with them. Ruby's hospital bag was packed. And the mum who was now 8 months gone, was exhausted.
"Not long now" Iain said, circling his arms around Ruby's rather large stomach.
Ruby pouted, she was fed up. She'd been to Robyn for baby advice and the mum of one had told her to enjoy it, but she just wanted them out now.
That afternoon, Ruby and Iain were on a shoout when Ruby felt a twinge in her stomach, she tried to concentrate on the patient in front of her, but then her waters broke.
"Ruby, are you OK?" Iain asked.
Ruby looked up at Iain. "My waters have just broke, "
Iain radioed for another ambulance, while he went over to Ruby, he took her hand and stroked her hair. "Do you want some entnox?" He asked, treating her like a patient, in a way, she was.
Ruby nodded, while Iain got the tube. "You put it in to your mouth and inhale it when you feel a contraction, "
Ruby gave Iain a look. "I know how to use it, "
"Of course" Iain laughed.
Finally, the other ambulance arrived, old paramedics Dixie and Josh had been recruited to help out while Ruby was in labour.
"Alright, sweetheart?" Dixie asked.
"She's in pain, Dix" Iain said.
Ruby was put on a stretcher and strapped down, while Iain held her hand. "Your doing well, Rubes. "
Dixie pulled in to the ambulance Bay and opened the back door, lowering the stretcher down.
"This is Ruby Sparks, 8 months pregnant, went in labour while out on a shout. BP 60/90. Given entnox at the scene." Said Dixie, walking in to her old workplace.
"Let's get her in to RESUS" Said Connie, putting on a pair of gloves.
The doors to RESUS burst open and Ruby was moved over to the bed, clipping a pulse oximeter to her finger.
After examining her, Connie revealed the news. "Ruby, your in active labour. "
When Connie left to update the team on Ruby, she got the urge to push.
"Iain"
Clutching Iain's hand, she pushed, taking a few breaks in between, before cotinuing to push again.
"I can see a head" Connie said, coming back in to check on Ruby. "OK, Ruby, I now want you to pant."
Ruby felt something slip as Connie caught the baby, wrapping it in a towel. "Congrulations, it's a boy, "
The baby felt heavy on Ruby's chest.
Ruby gripped on to the bars, as Iain took the baby. "Hey, mate" He said to the baby, who had a small mop of black hair.
Ruby's pain was back as she geared up to deliver her second baby.
Iain handed Ruby the pink blanket and she wrapped the baby, who resmbled her mum, up.
Gem was the first relative to visit Iain and Ruby, who had been moved to a private room.
"Come in, " Iain called to his sister. Gem walked in quitely, not wanting to disturb the new family.
"Gem, meet, Iain junior and Sophia Dean. " Iain said, showing Gem the new arrivals in the plastic cribs.
"Iain, they are so cute" Gem said.
"Congrulations mate" Cal grinned as he punched Iain on the shoulder, calling it a congrats punch.
Iain rubbed his shoulder, it had been the shoulder he'd been shot in. "Careful Cal. " He said.
"Sorry, mate" Cal replied, as the door opened, Iain and Ruby turned, expecting it to be another one of their colleagues, but it was a woman, Iain didn't recongise, she had blonde hair, like Ruby's.
"Can I help you?" Iain asked, wondering who the stranger was.
"She my grandad's daughter" Ruby said, she had been really close to her grandfather and had been devastated after his death. That's why, she treasured her stethoscope, as it had been a graduation gift from him, before he passed.
"I've come to see my grandchildren, that I never knew I had" She sneered, looking at Iain.
"You don't get on?" Iain asked, joining his tired girlfriend on the bed and stroking her hair.
"She blames me for my brothers death" Ruby said.
"What happened?" Iain asked, curious.
"I had been 12, my brother, 15, he had been a bit of a trouble marker, bunking off school, smoking in the house. He lit one in the house one day, flames took over the house, mum come home from work to find the house a blaze. She pulled me out, but it was too late for my brother, who suffered burns, he was taken to hospital, put on a ventilator, but he died after being taken off it"
Iain was stunned at this, he thought he'd had a bad upbringing with Gem, but it turns out the saying, you don't really know someone was true, he looked up at Ruby, who had tears welling in her eyes and Iain hadn't seen her upset since a young patient, a girl, had died.
"You didn't kill him, " He said, needing her to know that. He wasn't really one to judge.
I miss Cal's character so I had to have him have a little part in this chapter. Sorry, if the labour scene was rubbish, I'm not really confident on writing them.
From what we know from the show, Ruby is an only child, but I have a plan.
