Guest: Thanks for the review, I'm well thank you, yourself? I was aware of your Cal/ Ethan request and hadn't forgotten about it, but sometimes real life has to take priority.

This chapter is set when Emile is the boys mum, Ethan has the gene, and he is older than Cal. This chapter is set in two parts: The first part is when the boys are small, the second half of the chapter is when both boys are working at the ED. This will be my last update until the New Year.

The Secret Life Of Casualty.

Chapter 534.

Ethan knew that Cal was a special brother, he knew he had a disabilty called "Cerebral Palsy" which was a result of being starved of oxygen at birth. He'd spent the first few months of his life in hospital, in an incubator, before being sent home where he remained on oxygen. He had a slightly enlarged head and a weak left arm. He was unable to grasp his toys, and Emile felt like a failure, like it was somehow her fault. That's why a few years later, when Cal was 3, she discovered she was pregnant again, she panicked, how was she supposed to cope with a toddler and a newborn baby? Cal took up most of her time.

"Mummy, who is this?" Cal asked, scrunching up his face as he looked in the plastic cot which was beside the bed his mum was lying in.

Emile, looked exhausted, smiled at her son. "This is your brother, Steven, this is Micheal."

Emile and her two sons were discharged from hospital, the next day.

When Cal was 11, and Ethan, 15, Emile had to go to work, leaving her two sons in the house on their own, she knew it was wrong, but she trusted Ethan to let her know if either of them needed her.

"Ethan, I'm bored, " Cal said. "Can we go the park?"

Ethan shook his head. "No, mate" He felt bad for saying no to him, but he had some important exams to study for as he was soon to sit his GCSE's

"Please" Said Cal.

"OK" Ethan nodded, it could be good to have a break from the coursework he was completing. "Go and get your coat"

Cal walked out in to the hallway and reached for his coat, Ethan pocketed his house keys and then the two left the house, heading to the park.

While Ethan was temporary distracted, Cal climbed the slide steps, but was unaware of a bigger kid coming up behind him, he pushed Cal before he was ready and the younger boy pushed him and he landed on his hand and he heard a snap and then he started crying.

Ethan turned around, he couldn't see his brother. "Cal, where are you?"

"I'm here" Ethan walked around to the slide where his brother was.

"What happened?" Ethan asked, crouching down next to him.

"I was pushed"

Ethan got his phone out of his pocket and rang an ambulance.

"Ethan, it hurts"

Ethan put his arm around Cal's shoulder. "I know, mate"

The ambulance arrived and two paramedics called Polly and Jeff got out. "What happened, mate?"

"He fell," said Ethan.

Watching the doctor, put the cast on his younger brother, Ethan realised something: He wanted to help people as well. And, he knew to do that, he had to work hard in his GSCE's, to get the grades he needed so he could then go to uni.

Ethan got in to uni at 18, leaving a 15 year old Cal on his own at home, Cal was sad.

Several years later.

"Connie, who had recently returned from extended leave, was stood at the Nurses Station. "Can I have everyone's attention please?" Archie, Will, David, Ethan, Jacob, Charlie, Duffy, Jessica and Zoe all turned around to face the newly returned Clinical Lead. Standing next to Connie was a man, who was looking down, not maintaining eye contact, dressed in a red polo top and black pants. He looked unfamillar to all, but one man. "This is Caleb Knight, he's our new porter, he will be replacing Gem. I want you all to make him feel welcome. " she said.

A man, who was wearing dark blue scrubs, came up to him and held out his hand. "I'm Charlie Fairhead, the charge nurse"

Cal nodded as next a staff nurse, come up to him, introducing herself as Jessica.

"I thought you'd be pleased to see me, " Cal said, sounding dissapointed.

Ethan smiled. "Of course I am, mate"

Just then, Charlie knocked on the door. "Caleb, the beds in RESUS, need changing"

Cal's face had a panicked look on it, it was his first day in the ED and he hadn't been shown around fully yet.

Ethan sensed this. "Don't worry, Charlie, I'll help him. "

Charlie nodded and left the two boys to it.

"This way, " said Ethan, walking out in to the corridor, to RESUS. He held open the doors as Cal nervously stepped in, seeing beds. Ethan placed the clean sheets on the bed. "You pull the sheets off like this, " he said, pulling the sheet and bundling it up, before throwing it in the laundry basket. He moved aside to let Cal try. Cal picked up a sheet and stretched it out, pulling the corners on to the matress, but they kept coming undone. Eventually he got the sheet on and placed a blanket folded on top.

"Cal, the bed pans need emptying, " Jessica told him, when he walked out of RESUS.

"Can't you do it?" Cal asked.

Jessica shook her head. "I'm on a break"

Cal walked in to cubicles, he didn't know how to change a bedpan. The pan clattered to the floor and the patients pee went all over Cal.

"I can't do it, Ethan" Said Cal, pushing past him, he sounded frustrated.

"It's your first day, Cal. " Ethan said, wisely, remembering what he was like on his first day, he stuttered and blushed red. "It'll get easier,"

"I want to go home, "

"Sure" He nodded.

The walk home was in silence but Ethan made sure that Cal was comfortable, getting in his favourite snacks, ruffling his hair and getting him his favourite jacket as they sat in front of the TV.
