"What are we doing," Danika asked.
"My boss is having a Fourth of July pool party," Teddy replied.
"Why am I going to your work thing," Danika questioned.
"Richard wants to meet you," Teddy said, "his nephew goes to your school in your grade. Patrick Webber. All the attendings bring their families to this. It's one of those things that we both have to go and smile and play nice."
"My duo partner for the summer," Danika smiled, "that's not bad. Patrick is hot."
"Should I be worrying about my 14 year old sister and her dance partner," Teddy asked.
"He's hot," Danika said, "but he won't be into me."
"It's a work thing for me," Teddy reiterated.
"Be good got it," Danika smiled.
"Owen will be there," Teddy said.
"Are you dating him," Danika asked.
"We're figuring it out ," Teddy smiled, "he's excited to see you again."
"He's nice enough," Danika said.
"He's a good guy," Teddy said.
"Does he have to stay over," Danika asked.
"Are you not comfortable with that," Teddy asked.
"I don't know him," Danika said, "then I went down in the morning and he was on the couch."
"You hardly know me," Teddy replied, "next time he stays I'll tell you. That wasn't the plan we had both had a few beers and he was safer to sleep on the couch than drive."
"But you're my sister," Danika replied.
"I am," Teddy said.
"You come when things are hard and confusing," Danika said.
"I always will," Teddy agreed, "and now I get the fun things."
"This pool party, what do I expect," Danika asked.
"It's the attendings so senior surgeons lots are older than me a few are my age," Teddy smiled, "a few have teenagers that are coming with them. You hang out with the other kids, swim, play games. Richard hired a band so there'll be dancing later."
"Dancing," Danika said, "I don't know how to party dance."
"Knowing Richard it will be swing or something like that," Teddy said, "he loves jazz music."
"We've been doing swing this week as part of the summer intensive," Danika smiled.
"How is the summer program," Teddy asked.
"It's good," Danika smiled, "weird not being on campus 24/7."
"I like our partial boarding," Teddy said, "at least try it for the summer."
"Patrick goes to his aunt and uncles after class on Saturday and they bring him back Monday morning," Danika said.
"I'd like more flexibility for us," Teddy said, "I'm thinking you board when I'm on nights or on call and come home when I'm home."
"Use boarding as a daycare," Danika asked.
"Basically," Teddy admitted, "I don't feel comfortable leaving you home alone overnight and to get yourself to school."
"Teddy," Danika groaned, "I've lived at boarding school since I was nine. I can handle getting up, getting dressed and on the bus."
"I know you can," Teddy replied, "but I'm not okay with it. I don't think it's safe or good leadership for me to do that. If you were 17 maybe we could talk about the odd night here and there but you're not. I'm still being monitored by social services until Christmas that I'm doing this right."
"What don't they get," Danika asked, "you're a doctor, I'm at a great school."
"We have what we need," Teddy said, "we're getting into a routine and figuring how living together works."
"Then why does the social worker keep checking on us," Danika asked.
"Because of my time with the army," Teddy said, "it doesn't look stable and secure for you. I need to do a full formal discharge. Right now I'm inactive which means I could be called back if I'm really needed."
"What would happen to me," Danika asked.
"I'm doing the papers to leave fully," Teddy said, "but between that happening and now you would go back to school and board full time and I would arrange leaves to see you as much as possible. If something was to happen Owen is my backup in Seattle. He's the one person I would trust to look out for you like I would. I put Owen's name and number on the forms for school as well."
"I still don't know your boyfriend," Danika replied.
"We'll work on that," Teddy said, "slowly as you're ready."
"I guess I can talk to him today," Danika agreed.
Teddy parked in front of the Webber's house.
"Owen is here," Teddy said, "and Arizona is coming. You liked her."
"As a doctor," Danika said.
"Just come and have fun with the other kids," Teddy said, "its supposed to be a fun day. If you get to a point that you've just had enough we'll go."
"Promise," Danika asked.
"I promise," Teddy confirmed, "it doesn't mean we leave that instant we will have to say good bye to people and thank the Webber's."
"I understand," Danika said.
They got out of the car and Danika followed Teddy to the door.
Patrick answered with Richard.
"Uncle Richard, this is my pas de deux partner Danika Altman," Patrick introduced.
"My sister," Teddy added.
"It's nice to meet you Danika," RIchard greeted.
"It's good to meet you," Danika replied, shaking his hand.
"Danika there's some other people our age in the backyard," Patric said, "were going swimming."
Danika looked to Teddy who nodded.
"Okay," Danika replied, "I need to change."
"Use the bathroom down the hall on the left," Adele said.
"Thank you," Danika replied.
"Who's the kid with Altman," Mark asked.
"Her sister Danika," Owen replied.
"Sister really," Mark asked, "she can't be more than 13. You sure that's not her kid?"
"Danika is 14 and her half sister. They have the same dad," Owen replied, "Teddy has guardianship though."
"Why isn't the kid with her parents," Mark asked.
"Their dad passed 7 or 8 years ago before Teddy enlisted. And Danika's mom passed a couple months ago," Owen said, "Teddy is Danika's only living relative."
"So she had to take the kid in," Mark asked.
"Chose to," Owen said, "Teddy always liked her sister. But give them space Danika is shy right now."
"Teddy Altman," Addison asked.
"Addison Montgomery," Teddy questioned, "what are you doing here?"
"I'm the OB consult and neonatal," Addison said, "last I heard you were in the army of all things."
"I stepped down three months ago and moved out here I didn't want to stay in New York," Teddy said.
"You have a daughter," Addison pointed out.
"Half sister Danika. I have custody though," Teddy replied.
"Your dad and his assistant," Addison said.
"Yes. June just passed away," Teddy said, "it's me and Dani now. I haven't seen you in years."
"Camp Yellow Tail," Addison said.
"And you were a couple years older than me," Teddy replied.
"Three, Addison agreed, "so raising you half sister how did that happen?"
"Her mom ODed," Teddy replied, "the beginning of May. So I came out here to run Cardio and be with Dani."
"Your mom must have loved that," Addison said.
"She passed 7 years ago," Teddy replied.
"I'm sorry," Addison said.
Danika ran by following some other teens.
Teddy put out an arm to stop her, "sun screen."
"Really," Danika groaned.
"I have the spray it's in your bag," Teddy said, "you're going to burn."
"But it's not cool," Danika complained.
"Neither is skin cancer," Teddy replied, "sunscreen on your back and shoulders or cover up."
"I would listen to your sister," Addions said.
"None of the other kids are," Danika moaned.
"I don't care," Teddy replied," you are. You burnt last weekend at the beach, go get it."
"Teddy," Danika whined, "not cool."
"Never said I was," Teddy replied.
"Teddy," Danika whined.
"Sunscreen or cover up," Teddy repeated firmly. Danika had already learned that tone and she wasn't winning this one.
"Fine," Danika groaned and went to get her sunscreen.
"It's week one of her living with me full time," Teddy said, "we're adapting."
"You did that well but she's headstrong," Addison commented.
"She's been in boarding school except for three weeks a year since she was nine. Having an adult of her own day to day is new," Teddy said, "and I'm new at raising a teenager."
"She's with you for breaks," Addison said.
"No," Teddy declared, "partial boarding. So she's at school when I'm on call overnight or in the hospital overnight. Other than that she's with me. It's not fair to her to be shoved in a boarding school like she was. Dad would have been so mad."
"I forgot you actually knew your parents and they came to parents day at camp," Addison said.
Danika threw the sunscreen at Teddy, "happy?"
"Back and shoulders," Teddy commanded.
"I did my shoulders, I can't reach my back," Danika grumbelled.
"Danika I'm Addison," Addison introduced herself, "I knew Teddy when we were kids."
"Did you know our dad," Danika asked.
"No. Teddy and I went to summer camp together," Addison said, "Teddy mentioned boarding school where were you?"
"Park Ridge Ballet conservatory," Danika replied, "I was boarding. She now uses boarding as a daycare for a teenager."
"Surgeons schedules are tricky," Addison agreed.
"Can I go now," Danika asked.
"Yes," Teddy agreed. Danika ran to the other teens with Teddy left holding the sunscreen.
"I should go talk to a few people," Addison said.
"Owen will be looking for me," Teddy agreed.
"Owen," Addison asked.
"Head of trauma," Teddy replied, "we served together."
"Your boyfriend," Addison asked.
"Yes," Teddy smiled.
Teddy walked over to Owen the sunscreen still in her hand.
"Is that a hint," Owen asked.
"No," Teddy said, "I had to force Danika to wear it. She said I wasn't cool."
"What did my mom say," Owen asked.
"I can't be cool all the time," Teddy sighed.
"She looks like she's okay," Owen said, "but what is she doing with Webber's nephew?"
"Patrick is her dance partner," Teddy said, "that looks cool."
"Is it safe," Owen asked.
"They rehearsed it," Teddy said, "they start lifts in the school pool then do it on mats before actually doing them. The teachers know what they're doing and train them carefully."
"Are we swimming," Owen asked.
"I brought two bathing suits but I want to see what others do," Teddy replied, "I think swimming might just be for the kids."
"I have trunks and a towel," Owen said.
"Mines in Danika's bag," Teddy replied, "I don't know if she's dressed okay seeing the other girls her age."
"She's a teenager in a bathing suit," Owen said.
"She wanted a bikini and I'm okay with that at the beach but made her wear the tankini today instead because I didn't know the dress code," Teddy explained, "I'd rather her be covered for this. Respectful."
"It's fine," Owen said, "she blends in with the other kids."
"Am I doing this right," Teddy asked.
"Which part," Owen asked.
"Danika," Teddy said, "I'm afraid to mess it all up. Ninth grade is high school."
"She'll be fine," Owen said, "you're here every day."
"She looks okay with the others," Teddy said.
"Let her be Teddy," Owen said, "let's grab a beer and relax."
"One today," Teddy said.
"It is a work thing," Owen agreed.
"The people seem good," Teddy smiled.
"Most of them are," Owen agreed.
"We should mingle," Teddy said, "people are staring."
"Sloan was asking about you and Dani," Owen said.
"What did you say," Teddy asked.
"That she's your half sister and you have custody as her only living relative," Owen said.
"Just the facts," Teddy asked.
"Just the facts," Owen agreed, "you seemed to know Addison Montgomery."
"A few summers of camp," Teddy replied.
"Do you want to go camping this summer," Owen asked.
"I do," Teddy said, "without sand."
"Forest, lake, swimming," Owen suggested.
"After the summer session," Teddy agreed, "take a long weekend. Two tents."
"Will you sister be okay with it," Owen asked, "she kind of freaked out Sunday morning."
"That was my fault," Teddy admitted.
"Why," Owen asked.
"I was in the shower when she went down," Teddy said, "I didn't know she was awake. So I didn't give her the heads up."
"She didn't expect to see me," Owen said.
"You surprised her," Teddy replied, "she's been used to a very strict routine and predictability. To do that her first night in a new house."
"She wasn't thrilled," Owen said, "but what about you?"
"I wanted you there," Teddy admitted, "I wanted you to stay with me."
"We'll make it work," Owen said.
"We will," Teddy agreed.
Teddy looked back to where Danika was playing volleyball in the pool with the other teens. She looked happy and like she was making new friends.
After dinner the band started to play.
"Want to dance," Owen asked.
"I do," Teddy smiled.
Owen took Teddy's hand and led her to the dance floor. At the same time Patric Webber asked Danika to dance.
"Is that Altman's kid with Webber's Nephew," Derek asked Meredith
"I think it's her baby sister but yes," Derek said.
"Sister," Bailey said, "but Altman has custody."
"That kid can dance," Meredith said.
"Both of them," Bailey said, "where do you find boys that dance like that."
The song changed to a slow song and the teens left the dance floor.
"Eww," Danika hissed.
"What," Patric asked.
"My sister and her boyfriend," Danika whined, "they kissed."
On the dance floor Teddy and Owen were swaying slowly to the music with her head on his shoulder. They looked comfortable and happy with each other.
In this story I'm going to get Owen and Teddy together sooner. They should have been together before and should be endgame. Please review
