Friday morning Owen was alone in the locker room when Teddy entered. She wrapped her arms around him from behind and rested her cheek against his back.
"Hey," Owen said, turning around to hug her.
"Positive," Teddy whispered, her face buried in his chest.
"Teddy," Owen said, "were having a baby."
"Owen you don't need to do this," Teddy said, pulling away, "you have choices but I'm keeping this baby and I need my friend."
"We're doing this Teddy," Owen whispered.
"Two kids," Teddy said, "Owen I'm going to be responsible for two kids. I just had Danika trusting me she's so close to trusting you."
"Teddy I'm all in," Owen said, "you, me, baby, Dani. That's our family."
"Owen," Teddy whispered.
"Teddy it's okay," Owen said, "we'll figure it all out."
"You don't have to do this," Teddy said, "it's okay. You can choose how much you want to be involved with me and the baby."
"I choose you," Owen said, "I choose our baby. I choose our family."
Teddy collapsed in his arms crying.
"Hey, hey," Owen soothed, "we're okay. You're okay. I've got you. I'm right here."
Teddy kept crying.
"Teddy I love you," Owen said, "that's my answer today and every day. I love you."
"I love you two," Teddy said.
Owen gave her a gentle kiss then rested his forehead against hers keeping Teddy in his arms.
"I have to have two very awkward conversations with Dani," Teddy said.
"Two," Owen asked.
"First where do babies come from I don't think anyone has told her and the second is you're going to be an auntie," Teddy said.
"I would just do the second one and let her ask her questions," Owen said, "she knows I sleep over a couple times a week."
"How do we want to do this," Teddy asked.
"What do you want," Owen asked.
"It would be nice to have you around all the time and live together," Teddy said, "but."
"You need time to prepare your sister," Owen said.
"It could take a while," Teddy shook her head, "I need you."
"I'm not on call tonight," Owen said, "I'll do dinner and bring it over."
"I promised Danika we would go to June's grave tomorrow," Teddy said, "I'm not ready to tell anyone other than you and my OB."
"Have you done that," Owen asked.
"I will today," Teddy said.
"Altman, Hunt," Richard greeted walking in.
"Sir," Teddy replied.
"Altman did you get the letter about parents week the three days before thanksgiving," Richard asked.
"Yes," Teddy said, "I can do two of the three. I have a surgery planned the Wednesday I can't move."
"I'll go Wednesday," Owen offered, "if Dani wants me to."
"We can talk to her," Teddy said.
"Adele is going all three," Richard said, "I'm doing what I can."
"You have Adele," Teddy said, "we're Dani and I."
"I would have moved the patient but it's a veteran being brought out from Missouri for me," Teddy said, "I may try to get it on the board for like 6am. So I can catch the end of the day with Danika."
"I'll drive her that morning," Owen said.
"Its weeks away Hunt," Teddy said, "i need to figure out Halloween first. She wants to go trick or treating."
"We're letting Patrick," Richard said, "he was boarding at 9 and missed out so if they want to go with the Kandler kids let them."
"She's out of trouble that way," Teddy said, "I was wild in high school. My friends parents were pretty hands off and I got pulled into things I shouldn't have. I like her supervised and to know where she is. Begging strangers for candy I'm okay with."
Teddy's pager went for the pit and she ran to meet the incoming heart attack.
Later that afternoon Teddy snuck up the backstairs to OB she didn't want anyone to know yet other than Owen. After meeting with the on call OB they determined that she was due in early June.
She was called in for another trauma and met Owen in the trauma room, they ran the trauma together. Alone in the scrub room she whispered, "June 4th."
"We'll be ready," Owen said.
Teddy gripped the edges of the sink bracing herself and taking a deep breath.
"You okay," Owen asked.
Teddy nodded.
"Just breathe," Owen said, "do you want me to page someone else."
"I think I can do it," Teddy said, "just a little dizzy."
"Do you need water," Owen asked.
"I'm good," Teddy replied, "we need to scrub."
Half way through the surgery Richard stepped into the OR, "Altman how much longer?"
"Four or five hours," Teddy said.
"I'll ask Adele to pick Danika up and take her to our house for dinner," RIchard said, "it's pork roast tonight."
"Thank you," Teddy replied.
Richard stepped out of the OR and called Adele letting her know Teddy was in the OR and Danika would need a ride and dinner.
"We need to work that out," Teddy said.
"I'm happy to if your in surgery and I'm not," Owen said, "my mom would go two."
"She doesn't know your mom," Teddy said.
"We're going to need to figure that out," Owen said, "let her spend more time with my mom."
"Way too fast Owen," Teddy said, "we need to figure out a few things and not today."
Around them the interns looked confused, the usually collected head of cardio looked flustered and upset. The cold head of trauma was almost affectionate with the head of cardio.
"Danika is going home and having dinner with the Webbers," Owen said, "then who ever scrubs out first picks her up and takes her home?"
"I guess," Teddy said, "we do cocoa and chat before bed time if it's not stupidly late."
"Who is Danika," an intern whispered.
"Her daughter maybe," another replied.
"Her sister that Dr. Altman has custody of," Lexie replied, "nice kid. You'll see her come in sometimes with Altman, little blonde she's about 14 but looks 11."
"Thank you for clarifying little Grey," Teddy said.
"So whoever scrubs out first will get her," Owen said, "it's Friday."
"And her and I have plans in the morning," Teddy said, "no you can't come. It has to be Danika and I."
"I wasn't going to offer to come," Owen said, "but I will make the two of you dinner."
"That would be good," Teddy agreed before turning her attention back to the crashing patient.
Teddy scrubbed out first and changed to her regular clothes. She drove to the Webbers and picked up Danika.
"Sorry about that sweetheart," Teddy said.
"Patrick and Adele explained it," Danika said, "it's when your adult is a suregon it happens."
"It does," Teddy said, "we are going to work more on the plan. But I wanted to talk to you about it first."
"What's changing," Danika asked.
"You know Owen and I are a couple," Teddy said, "he has offered to pick you up or drop you off at school if I'm stuck in the OR. My plan is that I do 99% of the driving but as back up he will come get you or drive you to school."
"What if you're both in the OR like today," Danika asked.
"Webbers still and I'll pick up Patrick if they need me to," Teddy said, "and Owen wanted to talk to his mom about being our back up. What did you think of Evelyn?"
"She was nice," Danika said, "I liked her."
"Would you be okay getting to know her," Teddy asked.
"I think so," Danika agreed.
"Her and Owen do Sunday dinner every week and have invited us," Teddy said, "do you want to go?"
"I can try," Danika agreed.
"I'll let him know," Teddy said, "it's just us home tonight then he's going to make us dinner at home tomorrow night and Sunday we go to evelyns."
"Owen's been around more," Dankia observed.
"He has," Teddy said, "he helped with your home work yesterday."
"Why," Danika asked.
"Evelyn was catching up with me," Teddy said, "you were sitting at his table with it and he could help so he did."
"I was fine," Danika said.
"Was it better with help," Teddy asked.
"He had a good trick," Danika said, "I showed my science group the trick for balancing equations today. Each element or ion has hands and all of their hands have to be held."
"Does it make sense," Teddy asked.
"It did," Danika said, "I got it right when my teacher had me do it on the board. He pulls names out of the hat for who has to do it. I drew the hands."
"Good," Teddy said, "would you be okay if he stayed over more often?"
"He's there a couple nights a week," Danika said, "but I like our time."
"I know you do," Teddy said, "cocoa when we get inside?"
"Yes please," Danika said.
Teddy parked the car, "go take your uniform off and get your pajamas. Skirt and Blazer on the drycleaning pile in my room."
"They're clean enough," Danika said.
"Nope," Teddy said, "I'm taking a few of my work things to get drycleaned tomorrow. We're dropping them off in the morning on our way. Both your blazers need to be done, I don't think we've done them yet."
"I need one on Monday for the field trip," Danika said.
"Go change and put your skirt and blazer on the chair in my room. You have five skirts I should see four in the pile," Teddy directed.
"I'm going," Danika said.
"Pajamas and we'll have our cocoa and watch a movie," Teddy said.
Teddy started the kettle and walked upstairs and grabbed her pajamas from her dresser. She quickly changed and met Danika in the kitchen where the mugs were already on the counter with the hot cocoa mix and whipped cream.
"Whipped cream," Teddy asked.
"It's friday," Danika said.
"What was dinner at the Webbers," Teddy asked.
"Chicken, rice, veggies," Danika said.
"What did you and Patrick do," Teddy asked as she made hot chocolate.
"Played board games," Danika said.
"Did you have fun," Teddy asked, "whats going on with him it's your first boyfriend."
"His aunt and uncle don't know," Danika said, "he's not sure if he's allowed to date."
"I think Richard knows," Teddy said.
"Are we in trouble," Danika asked.
"What's the rule here," Teddy asked.
"Shared spaces only and not upstairs," Danika replied.
"We can't kiss in front of you you can't kiss in front of me," Teddy said.
"That would be weird," Danika said, "and you break that rule all the time."
"What does Adele say," Teddy asked.
"Shared spaces and not upstairs," Danika said, "the basement door stays open."
"I like doors open," Teddy said.
"Why," Danika asked.
Teddy took a deep breath and wrapped her hands around her mug.
"Danika, it's about respect for eachother," Teddy said, "you're both only 14. You're too young to do some things. And teenagers with closed doors and unsupervised sometimes you don't make good decisions."
"What sort of decisions," Danika asked.
"More than kissing," Teddy said.
"Like what they talked about in health last week," Danika asked.
"What did they talk about in health," Teddy asked.
"Where babies come from and how babies get in the woman," Danika said.
"About sex," Teddy said bluntly.
"Yes," Danika blushed.
"It's not a dirty word," Teddy said, "when a couple really loves each other it's healthy and normal."
"Why would they teach us about it," Danika asked.
"Did they teach you about being safe," Teddy asked.
"There's a medicine," Danika said, "and he has to wear something. It was awful and awkward and gross. The boys kept yelling a gross word."
"What word," Teddy asked.
"Boy parts," Danika said.
"I'm a surgeon, nothing you say about the human body surprises or disgusts me," Teddy said, "you can say it. You have to use the names."
"Why," Danika asked.
"Because if you ever end up in the hospital or having a problem you have to tell the doctors what's going on," Teddy replied.
"I thought it was part of science class," Danika said.
"It is but it's for your health," Teddy said, "say the word Dani."
"Penis," Danika whispered.
"Was that so hard," Teddy asked.
"No," Danika replied, "but what does it have to do with me and Patrick."
"Neither of you are mature enough to chose that," Teddy said, "you're not ready to make that decision. So the adults put the rules in like doors open, shared spaces and downstairs to remove the temptation."
"Is it a problem that I kissed him," Danika asked.
"No," Teddy said, "if you ever have any questions about boys I will always be here. You can always ask me."
"Really," Danika asked.
"Always," Teddy said, "any time. I will always answer your questions. I would rather you come talk to me and ask me instead of talking to your friends. I want to make sure you have facts and the right information."
"Mom wouldn't answer my questions," Danika said.
"I will always answer," Teddy said, "any time day or night."
"Promise," Danika asked.
"I promise," Teddy replied, "let's head to bed so we can have our day tomorrow."
They put their mugs in the dishwasher and walked upstairs together. Danika quickly brushed her teeth before Teddy tucked her in with the cat.
Teddy got into her own bed and her hand drifted to her stomach. I can do this she thought. I'll work this out, we'll have to slowly up the Owen time between now and June but by the time you're ready to be born little one daddy will be here all the time. Right now your auntie Danika needs mommy a lot. She lost her mom a few months ago and really needs mommy to love her right now. She's doing better, Danika is talking to me and trusting me. I'll tell her about you soon, little one I promise. Get through tomorrow, her mom's birthday. Daddy and I are so excited to meet you. I've always wanted a baby of my own, i'm so happy to be your mommy.
