"Why are Danika's sister and her boyfriend here," a girl asked walking into health class.
"Dr Altman and Dr Hunt are teaching today," the teacher said.
"My mom won't be happy," the girl said.
"Kristen, that's not your choice," the teacher said, "we are very lucky to have two surgeons coming to speak to us today."
"That's why Danika always gets everything right in anatomy," Kristen snapped.
"She hears us talking about work and asks so we show her and teach what we can at home," Teddy said.
Danika came into class and ran to the corner where Teddy had parked the stroller.
"Danika, leave Allison she's asleep," Teddy directed, "you can play with her when you get home. And you have a job to do now."
"Please," Danika asked.
"No," Teddy replied, giving Danika the mom look.
Owen, seeing this could become a power struggle which had been happening at home lately called, "Danika I need your help."
"With what," Danika asked.
"Can you give every group an anatomy Jane," Owen asked.
"Did you bring the one from home," Danika asked.
"You can have yours," Owen agreed.
"What's with the barbies," Michelle asked.
"Try taking my them apart," Teddy said.
Patrick sat at the table, "Dr Owen, dr Teddy."
"You have Richard next," Teddy said.
"Meghan is in anatomy isn't she," Danika said.
"No you have Meghan next the boys have Richard," Teddy said.
"That's today," Danika complained.
"I don't like it either." Patrick said.
"Too bad," Owen said, "Danika you've had the conversation with Teddy. And if Meg doesn't make sense, ask her or ask when you get home."
"Not cool," Danika pouted.
"Never said we would be," Teddy replied, "you could be Sloan."
"Do we have to talk about her," Danika asked.
"I won't have them for dinner again," Teddy promised.
"We're going to get started I'm dr Owen Hunt Cheif of trauma surgery at Seattle Grace hospital. This is for Teddy Altman Cheif of cardiothroatic surgery also at Seattle Grace most of you seemed to know when we came In that dr Altman and Danika are sisters ," Owen boomed, "every table had an anatomy Jane doll on the table. I want you to start taking them apart and finding the spleen, pancreas and liver. I have prizes for the first three pairs done. One, two, three go."
Danika and Asher started pulling organs out in seconds Danika yelled, "Owen!"
"Dr Owen," Patrick bellowed.
Owen checked the two teams and put gummy frogs on the table for them.
"Not fair," Michelle pouted, "dr Hunt told Danika to keep her doll."
"Miss Klassen less complaining," the anatomy teacher scolded.
"He's your big brother," Asher whispered to Danika.
"No Teddy is my sister," Danika said, "Owen is my Brother in law."
"You live with them," Asher asked.
"I do," Danika said, "it's just Teddy and I for our family."
"Your mom and dad," Asher asked.
"Dad passed from lung cancer when I was 7 and mom passed at the end of eighth," Danika said, "Teddy and I are half sisters. We have the same dad."
"Your grandparents," Asher asked.
"Teddy barely remembers dads parents and my moms parents are in Mount Vernon " Danika explained, "I stay with Teddy until I graduate."
"I thought you were in a home stay like Patrick," Asher said.
"Dani," Owen called, "eyes up here kiddo."
The anatomy teacher watched the two doctors lecture about the dangers of drinking and smoking but more carefully how they interacted with Danika. He had been at the school a long time and worked with Danika since she was in fourth grade. He knew the story and had reported his suspicions about June to social services. His wife taught middle school English at PAC Rim and they had heard from Tatiana how neglected Danika had been while she was boarding, they had often slipped essentials for the young girl to her house mother. The anatomy teacher was pleased watching the interactions with Teddy and Owen; they clearly knew and loved the teen.
"We're going to give you 20 minutes in your tables to come up with a poster about the dangers of substance use, smoking or alcohol abuse," Teddy said, "work in your groups of four to do it."
"These will be hung around the school," the teacher added.
Once the groups were working Teddy took Allison out of the stroller to carry her around the room while the tenth graders worked.
Coming past Danika's table Allison tried to reach for Danika.
"Please Teddy," Danika begged.
"A few minutes if you keep working," Teddy agreed.
Danika took her niece and sat her in her lap. Danika's friends at her table all stopped working to interact with Allison until Owen seeing the 4 off task took the baby away.
After anatomy the girls made their way to the library.
"Does anyone know what we're doing," Jillian asked.
"It's Megan and Dr Addison," Danika said.
"Megan like your sisters fiancé's sister," Emilia asked, "bon fire and skim boarding Megan? Ice cream in the Jeep with no sides?"
"Yes," Danika replied.
They walked into the library and saw the chairs in a circle.
"Have a seat girls," Megan commanded.
Danika took the chair beside Megan.
"Hey kiddo," Megan smiled as Danika sat down.
"I'm only here because you'll tell Teddy and Owen if I skip," Danika replied.
"Your fine," Megan promised.
"Okay ladies," Addison called, "I'm dr Montgomery I'm the head of OBGYN at Seattle Grace. Sitting to my left is dr Megan Hunt one of our trauma suregons. We're here today to talk about sex and your sexual health in this room there is no silly or embarrassing question we will answer you honestly and factually. I do ask that you use the correct anatomical names for all male and female body parts for clarity."
Addison went though her discussion about the female reproductive system and how to make sure they were healthy as well as safe sex.
Meghan picked up the second part of the discussion, "all of what dr Montgomery has said is very important but I need to add to it. Consent, you saying yes is essential. Your relationship must be between two people who agree on boundaries and what they want. Your consent must be freely given every time for every kiss every physical interaction you must give consent. And your consent can be with drawn at anytime you always always have the right to change your mind and you must be respected. What ever complaints the other person makes are not your problem if you do not feel 100% comfortable with what you are doing you can always stop."
Jillian blurted, "what if he's older than you?"
"Doesn't matter," Megan replied, "you decide for your body. How much older?"
"He's 2 ," Jillian bragged.
"Jillian that's not okay," Megan said, "what he's doing is illegal your not 18 yet and he's more than three years older than you. If your uncomfortable you have to speak up."
"But he's a company member," Jillian said.
Mrs LaChance who was sitting in made a note of it to take to the company director.
"You never use that to get ahead," Addison said.
"Career, school, preforming that's not how to get ahead," Megan said, "that's not respecting yourself."
"But it's selfish," Michelle said.
"We'd respect," Megan replied, "never. Selfish is asking you to do things your not comfortable with expecting you do to things he wants."
"What happens if you say no," breanna asked.
"The other person has to stop," Megan replied.
"What if he doesn't," Carly asked.
"You tell someone," Addison said, "you report it always. And there are always people to help you."
"Who," Carly asked.
"Your teachers, house parents, parents, doctors and nurses the police," Megan said.
"Megan is the best listener," Danika interrupted.
"Girls I want you to close your eyes and keep them closed," Mrs LaChance said, "okay keeping your eyes closed I want you to hold up a number of fingers for adults you would trust with anything and to be there no matter what."
Around the room a few students showed zero fingers which concerned the adults some had four or five fingers up. Megan glances at Danika who was holding up three fingers, she guessed it was teddy, herself and Owen. Tatiana also noticed Danika's theee fingers a year and a half earlier doing something similar Danika hadn't held up one. She had noticed that Danika had appeared at ease with the red headed doctor beside her.
They finished their discussion and the bell rang for lunch.
"What's next tigger," Megan asked.
"Lunch," Danika said, "soup a wrap and cookies."
"I'm coming," Megan said.
"It's parents week," Danika replied.
"I know. Addison and I spoke to the parents first," Megan replied.
"How did that go," Danika asked.
"How I expected," Megan replied, "how was Teddy and Eeyores lecture?"
"Nothing we haven't talked about at home," Danika said, "I've heard all of yours before two."
"You have to know," Megan said.
"I feel bad for the boys with Richard and dr Avery," Danika giggled.
"Catherine Avery is a good choice for them, she's an expert," Megan replied.
"Was making my whole class yell the boy part names really important," Danika asked.
"Yes," Teddy said joining them, "lunch time?"
"Yes," Danika said, "hand sanitizer when we go into the cafeteria."
Danika lead the way into the cafeteria which was over crowded with the etra bodies of having parents around for parents week and the extra food they would need ment less choice than normal for the students.
"Which soup is better," Teddy asked.
"It's my favourite two," Danika said, "I'm getting the curried sweet potato and red lentil. We call it orange mush but it's all veggies and my absolute favorite. The turkey noodle is good two."
"I'll get the turkey noodle," Megan said, "but I want to try the sweet potato so will steal a bite of yours."
They got their lunches Teddy having not been at school for lunch since the previous March watching what Danika chose and trying her favourite lunch choices.
"How often do you have this for lunch," Teddy asked.
"The soup is only on the menu once every two weeks then the sandwiches and wraps are pretty standard," Danika said.
"Cookie," Megan asked.
"Having choices is a treat it's usually cookie of the day," Danika said, "and we only get 1."
"Veggie sticks and fruit cup," Teddy asked.
"Always," Danika replied.
"The portions are small," Megan observed.
"Why I have veggies and fruit," Danika replied.
"Is it enough energy," Teddy asked.
"Sometimes," Danika said, "isn't that why we have home snacks."
"I don't usually check the snacks in your bag. I trust you to eat what you need," Teddy said, "Owen does the groceries what are home snacks this week?"
"Berries, trail mix, peanut butter bars and Owen bought fruit roll ups," Danika said.
Emilia and Jen joined them.
"How was your session in the library," Jen asked.
"Mom," Emilia groaned.
"What," Jen asked.
"The discussion veered a way Addison and I didn't predict," Megan admitted, "based on the girls questions."
"Everything okay," Jen asked.
"These two yes," Megan said, "they're smart girls."
"Dr Hunt," Michelle's mom said standing behind Megan.
"Megan," Megan replied, "what can I do?"
"Thank you for telling the girls they have a voice my daughter just told me about a few things thank you," Michelle's mom said, "and which one of you is Danika's sister?"
"I am," Teddy smiled.
"I want to apologize about Michelle's birthday party," the mom said, "I just heard about you bringing your newborn to get a few of the kids when it got out of hand. And I understand your husband has treated Michelle a couple times now."
"Thank you," Teddy replied, "I will always go get Danika and her friends. They all know they can call me and Owen at any time and we will come. After listening to you today we're going to look into more help for her."
"If we can help at all let us know," Teddy replied, "I know of some resources through Seattle Grace. Why don't you and Michelle sit with us for lunch."
"She wants to sit with her friends with out mean old mom," the mom said.
"We haven't met," Jen spoke up, "I'm Jen Kandler Emilia's mom."
"Dianne," the mom said.
"Dianne have a seat," Teddy said, "you know Danika and Emilia. Then Megan is my sister in law."
Dianne took a seat, "where did your husband go?"
"The hospital," Teddy said, "he's the head of trauma surgery and had a budget meeting. He took Allison to daycare for the afternoon, it's too busy here for Allison."
"You're both doctors with two kids," Dianne said.
"Surgeons," Jen said.
"We're busy but happy," Teddy said, "our daughter Allison is 6 months and she's less busy than Danika."
Adele and Patrick joined them for lunch.
"They don't feed these kids enough," Adele said.
"We question," Teddy agreed.
"I wonder," Michelle said.
"Why we do home lunches half the time," Jen said, "I know she's eating enough."
"It's convenience for us," Teddy admitted, "Owen and I usually buy lunch at work."
"We send snacks," Adele added.
"So do we," Dianne said, "but we get the dancers don't eat blank."
"Danika and my dad never let us do that," Teddy said, "I did gymnastics for years I get it. But it was this is dinner and you'll eat it."
"Owen is worse for it than you," Danika said.
"Who's the push over," Megan asked.
"Your mom," Danika said, "she asks what I want."
"Evelyn calls that Grandma's rights," Teddy replied.
"Evelyn is," Jen asked.
"My mother in law," Teddy replied, "Danika's honorary nana."
"Teddy did we invite Grandma and Grandpa and Evelyn to the Nutcracker," Danika asked.
"I have their tickets for opening night," Teddy replied.
"Have you seen your grandparents again," Emila asked.
"A couple times," Danika replied, "it's okay. Grandpa keeps mailing me books."
"Good ones," Emilia asked.
"Really good ones," Danika smiled, "it's like once a week. Miss Whitman tried to take my new one away last week."
"Did you take the Mitchner to school," Teddy asked.
"I wanted to finish it," Danika said, "I'm almost done."
"I want it when your done," Teddy replied, "so does Owen."
"You read the YA books," Dianne asked.
"James Mitcher writes for adults its a college reading level," Teddy said, "we encourage reading. Our dad was in publishing and Danika's maternal grandpa taught literature at Western Washington University."
"Reading is expected," Dianne commented.
"It is," Teddy agreed.
The bell rang to end lunch.
"What's next," Teddy asked.
"Pas de deux," Danika said, "I'm working with Asher right now."
"Ohh," Megan teased.
"Megan," Danika blushed.
"Boy from anatomy," Teddy asked.
"Yes," Danika replied, "but I have to change to my leotard and tutu."
"Go get changed we'll meet you in the studio," Teddy said watching Danika walk away with her friends.
