Teddy was in the OR when her phone went off.

"It's Park Ridge school," the nurse said.

"Answer it," Teddy commanded.

"Dr Altman," Christina asked.

"It's Danika's school," Teddy replied, "to call during the school day something is up."

"Dr Altman," the voice on the other line said.

"What's wrong with Danika," Teddy asked.

"She's collapsed in math, she's vomiting and has a fever. She appears to be in a lot of pain and is clutching her stomach," the voice said.

"The doctor," Teddy asked.

"Has been called," the voice said, "Danika wants you."

"If it's as bad as you say, call an ambulance and have her sent to Seattle Grace I'll meet her in the ambulance bay," Teddy replied.

"We will," the voice agreed.

"Now and I'll meet her there," Teddy replied.

"Where are you coming from," the voice asked.

"I'm a surgeon at Seattle Grace," Teddy answered, "I'm there now."

"We'll send her," the voice said, "Dr Mullins is here, do you want him to look?"

"Yes," Teddy said, "I'll stay on the line."

The doctor did his assessment and grabbed the phone, "Mrs Altman?"

"Doctor Altman ," Teddy replied, "how's Danika?"

"I suspect appendicitis," the doctor said.

"I want her transferred to Seattle Grace," Teddy said, "I'm head of cardiothoracic surgery there. Send my sister here and I'll meet her in the ambulance bay."

"Dr Altman," the doctor said.

"Send my sister here, I'll be waiting for her," Teddy said.

"We will," the doctor replied.

Teddy turned to scrub out and called over her shoulder , "page Riggs to supervise Yang your closing."

Nathan met Teddy in the scrub room.

"What's going on," Nathan asked.

"Danika's coming in with suspected appendicitis," Teddy panicked.

"You go," Nathan said.

Teddy ran for the ambulance bay Owen saw her running and chased after her. He could see from Her face that this wasn't running for a patient.

"Danika," Teddy panted when they reached the ambulance bay, "school called. Appy page Robbins."

Arizona met them a second later, "Teddy, Owen, I have the 15 year old coming in with a suspected appy."

"It's Danika, her school called. Dr Mullins the sports medicine pediatrician who works there thinks it's an appy," Teddy said.

"I'll take it," Arizona said.

The ambulance pulled in and the doors flew open.

"Teddy," Danika sobbed seeing her sister.

Teddy grabbed Danika's hand, "I'm here sweetheart."

"We've got you Dani," Owen assured, going to the other side of the gurney.

"Let's get her in and checked out," Arizona yelled, "I want the first available or."

The nurse grabbed Teddy to get Danika's information.

"I have it," Owen said, "Teddy stay with Danika."

"Dr Hunt," the nurse said.

"I have guardianship with Dr Altman," Owen said, "I have Danika's information. She's on both Altman and my insurance."

"Birthday," the nurse asked.

"Feb 21 1995," Owen said, "no allergies or medications. She has tubes in her ears. Dr Sloan did them a year and a half ago."

"When did she eat," the nurse asked.

"She'll have had lunch and some snacks at school," Owen said, "their lunch period is at 12:30."

"Do you know what she ate," the nurse asked.

"Not for lunch they do hot lunch at school," Owen said, "I packed her snacks. She had strawberries, trail mix, carrot sticks, bell pepper and kiwi. She had oatmeal and apples for breakfast around 7."

"Healthy," the nurse said.

"We try," Owen replied, "she's usually pretty good."

"We're moving," Arizona said, "Karev and Kepner are scrubbing in."

"Arizona," Teddy said.

"Teddy, it's a routine appy," Arizona said, "I have her. She's okay."

"Teddy, do you want to go to the gallery," Owen asked.

"Owen go with her," Teddy begged.

"I'm with you," Owen said, "Robbins has her."

"Teddy," Danika sobbed.

"I'm still in scrubs," Teddy said, "I'll come with you to the OR door."

"I'm going to scrub," Arizona said.

"Danika, did you have lunch," Teddy asked.

"No my stomach hurt," Danika cried.

"Have you eaten since breakfast," Teddy asked.

"No," Danika whimpered.

"Owen what did she have for breakfast," Teddy asked.

"Oatmeal," Owen said, "we were rushing. Instant with apples for both her and Allison."

"You gave both the same breakfast," Teddy asked.

"It was easy. Three pouches, a few bites for Allison, a pouch for Danika and the rest for me," Owen said.

"So she's only eaten oatmeal today," Teddy said.

"Let's push some morphine," April said.

"Let's avoid opioids," Teddy said, "try Tylenol three."

"Dr Altman," April asked.

"Her mom died of an opioid overdose and was an addict," Teddy said, "I don't want her on opioids unless we have no choice."

"Teddy," Danika continued to sob.

Teddy sat on the side of the bed and pulled Danika into her arms, "you're okay. It's going to be okay. I'm here, Owen is, Megan is at the door Nathan will come check on you. Our family is all here."

"Hey kiddo," Owen said sitting on the opposite side to Teddy, "it's okay. In a few minutes Arizona is going to take you to the OR and Dr Warren will help you have a nap just like your ears."

"Arizona is going to make a small cut in your stomach right here and separate the muscles so she can take out your appendix. You don't need an apendix," Teddy said softly tracing where the incision would be made with her finger, "your going to be fine it's an hour."

"Can you come," Danika asked.

"We can't be in the OR for your surgery," Owen said, "we can meet you in the PACU. We will be there right when you get out of surgery."

"Dr Altman, dr Hunt we're going to take Danika now," a nurse said.

"We need Dr Altman's signature on the consent," a second nurse said, handing Teddy the forms.

Teddy filled in the forms and signed off for the surgery and Arizona to make any calls she needed in the OR.

Sitting in the surgical waiting room Owen said, "I'm going to call my mom to come get Allison and take her home."

"I'll stay with Danika tonight," Teddy said.

"I knew you would," Owen said.

Owen called Evelyn, "mom can you come get Allison?"

"Do I need to get Danika from school," Evelyn asked.

"She's here, she has appendicitis, Robbins is operating," Owen said.

"Is she okay," Evelyn asked.

"Arizona the head of peds has her in the or now," Owen replied.

"I'm coming," Evelyn said.

Megan sat beside Teddy, "it's Arizona, Danika will be okay. How many appies do we do every day?"

"I told dad I would take care of her," Teddy sobbed.

"It's an appy," Megan said, "she's here and in surgery you are taking care of her. That's what she needs."

"She's my only link to my dad," Teddy sobbed.

"It's Robbins," Megan said, "do you want Nate and I to go to the gallery and check on Danika?"

"Please," Teddy begged.

Owen returned to sit with Teddy.

"Mom is grabbing Danika's bear then getting Allison," Owen said.

"What if," Teddy asked.

"She's good," Owen said, "it's an appy you did one last week."

"The nurse did it," Teddy admitted.

"Meg went to the gallery," Owen said.

In the OR Arizona directed Alex to start the process.

"Altman," Alex said, "Dr Altman's kid?"

"Half sister technically but Teddy and Owen have custody," Arizona said.

"You want me To do the appy on Altman's sister," Alex asked.

"Yes," Arizona said, "she's another patient. Your challenge will be two very knowledgeable parents. It's good in that her complication rate drops but they'll be on us for any little thing."

"Insurance," Alex asked.

"Don't worry," Arizona said, "I'd assume Danika is on both of their plans but for sure on Teddy's."

"She has the kid in private school a fancy one," Alex said.

Megan got on the intercom, "do you need a hand?"

"You're too close," Arizona said, "Alex has it."

Megan walked back to meet Teddy and Owen.

"Shes stable," Megan said.

"You okay," Teddy asked.

"I'm fine," Megan said, "a bit dizzy but."

"I'm going to get some coffee," Nathan said, "Meg do you want water or juice?"

"Apple juice," Megan said, "maybe it'll stay down."

"Not keeping anything down," Teddy asked.

"Not really," Megan admitted, "don't worry about me now."

"I had a few days of that," Teddy said, "it was bad. You're 8 or 9 weeks?"

"9," Megan said.

"Not much longer," Teddy said, "this was when it was at its worst for me. Owen brought me a couple banana bags at home."

"Maybe I'll tell Nate," Megan said, "did it help?"

"I don't know," Teddy said, "we kinda had to hide it late at night and sleep with it in my hand."

"Danika," Megan asked.

"She's going to be okay," Teddy asked.

"She will be," Owen said.

"What if," Teddy asked.

"She's okay," Owen said, "she's going to be okay."

"How much longer," Teddy asked.

"Half an hour," Owen said, "then we can go to the pacu and wait."

"Grey," Teddy called seeing Lexie walk past.

"Dr Altman I saw Danika's name on the board," Lexie said.

"Go to the OR and get me an update," Teddy said.

Lexie ran to the OR and came back panting, "the appendix is out."

"Okay let's go to the PACU," Owen said.

"I'm on tonight so I'll be here," Megan said.

"I'll go home with Allison once we know Dani is stable," Owen said.

Owen and Teddy walked to the OR and were met by Arizona soon after.

"I was able to do it laparoscopically," Arizona said, "she'll need to be here a day or two. I'm thinking we look at discharge on Saturday or Sunday."

"It's Thursday," Teddy said.

"Two nights is standard," Arizona said.

"We're home with her," Owen said.

"I know you're more than qualified and it might convince me to let her out early but it was on the verge of rupturing. I want 2 days of IV antibiotics then we'll see about oral when she goes home."

"Pain management," Teddy asked.

"You told the residents no opioids," Arizona said, "we have options but you know it's more effective."

"Her mom," Teddy said.

"Danika doesn't even like advil when she's injured," Owen said.

"We can start low dose she needs her pain controlled," Arizona said.

"From another drug family," Teddy said, "Tylenol?"

"I guess we can try," Arizona agreed, "but it's not as effective."

Owen tried to find a compromise, "what if we did some overnight to make sure she rests as a one off then try the T3s tomorrow when Dani has had a chance to rest."

"None after midnight," Teddy declared.

"She should be awake soon," Owen said.

"I'll do the orders," Arizona said walking off.

Teddy sat down beside Danika in the PACU

"Dr Altman," a nurse said.

"She's my baby sister," Teddy said.

"Your parents," the nurse said.

"We have custody," Owen said, "how's she doing?"

"Vitals are stable, she's starting to come out of it," the nurse said, "we'll do a dose of morphine once she's alert."

"Minimal," Teddy said.

"Dr Altman," the nurse asked, she knew Teddy was usually fairly generous with pain meds.

"There's a family history of substance abuse," Teddy said.

"Teddy," Danika whined.

"I'm here," Teddy said, "I'm here."

"Hey kiddo how are you feeling," Owen asked.

"It hurts," Danika whined.

"A nurse will give you something for the pain," Teddy said.

"No mom," Danika said.

"We're going to give you just enough to get you comfortable and out of pain," Teddy said, "the bare minimal and see, just enough so it doesn't hurt and you can sleep."

"No," Danika said.

"We're going to pull rank," Owen said, "you can't heal if you don't rest and you won't rest if your in pain."

"Can I go home," Danika asked.

"On the weekend," Teddy said, "you need some IV antibiotics for a couple days."

Danika sobbed, "I want to go home. I don't want to be here alone."

"You won't be alone," Teddy promised, "I'm going to stay here tonight with you. Evelyn is going to our house and getting pajamas and clean clothes for us and your bear."

"Polar," Danika asked.

"She knows which bear," Owen said, "I told her to get the white one off your bed."

"I don't feel good," Danika whined.

"You didn't after your ears," Teddy said, "lay back and close your eyes."

Danika tried to obey.

"Breathe kiddo," Owen said, "slow deep breaths."

Megan met Evelyn in the surgical waiting room.

"Mom," Megan called.

"Megan," Evelyn said, "have you heard anything?"

"She's out of surgery it went well," Megan said.

"What about you, you don't look okay," Evelyn said.

"Dizzy and nauseous," Megan admitted, "apple juice helped."

"When can you go home," Evelyn asked.

"Nine Am," Megan said, "I'm taking Owen's night shift so he can go home with Allison and Teddy stays with Danika."

"You help them with the girls a lot," Evelyn observed.

"When I can," Megan said, "they don't both get put on over night often. Then I've been staying at their place with the girls. I can do that until I have our baby then maybe the girls can stay with us when that happens?"

"Or I can go," Evelyn suggested.

"I like going," Megan said, "Danika talks when you're one on one with her."

"She does," Evelyn agreed, "Wednesday after school. She cooks with me then Owen and Teddy meet us for dinner."

"I still can believe he has two kids," Megan said, "he acted like a dad today."

"He does with Dani," Evelyn agreed.

Teddy went with Danika while she was moved to peds.

"Mom," Owen said when he found them in the waiting area.

"How is she," Evelyn asked.

"It almost burst she's here a couple days," Owen said, "she's sick."

"Can we see her," Evelyn asked.

"They just moved her to peds she only wants us," Owen said.

"How bad," Evelyn asked.

"Wont let go of Teddy," Owen admitted.

"When Megan had hers out she did the same," Evelyn said.

"I was 10," Megan replied.

"Teddy is who makes Dani feel safe," Evelyn said, "yes they are sister but thats her mom."

"Its weird sometimes," Owen said, "she's my sister in law but I want to protect and keep her safe the same way I do with Allison."

"You two are her parents," Evelyn said, "you parent Dani, it's no wonder you feel that way you both treat her like your child."

"She's 16 in three weeks," Owen said.

"Sweet 16," Megan said, "car?"

"No," Owen said, "maybe a used one for graduation. No spoiling my kids."

"But thats what grandmas are for," Evelyn said.

"Megan," Owen said.

"Can't stop us," Megan said.

"They don't need stuff," Owen said.

"Stuff doesn't seem to impress Dani," Megan agreed.

"Let's go see her," Evelyn said, "show her how much she's loved."

The family made their way up to Danika's hospital room.

"Single room," Owen pointed out.

"They put her here," Teddy said.

"With our names on the file she'll be a VIP," Owen said.

"How are you kiddo," Megan asked.

"Not so good," Danika said.

"It hurts," Megan said, "I had mine out at 10 I know. It sucks doesn't it."

"I really embarrassed myself at school," Danika whined, "Asher saw me puke."

"You're sick," Teddy said, "you needed surgery. He'll understand."

"I'm missing Patricks party tomorrow," Danika said.

"Richard will help them understand," Teddy said.

"Hi sweetheart," Evelyn said, "I brought a couple things from home for you."

Evelyn pulled Danika's bear out of the tote bag.

"My bear," Danika smiled.

"He needs a wash but he's here," Evelyn said, "when was the last time you washed him?"

"After the stomach flu went through the house in December," Teddy said, "I did both girls' stuffed animals then."

"Hunt is everything okay," Mark called from the door.

"Appy," Owen said, "she'll be fine."

"Hows Altman," Mark asked as Owen stepped into the hall.

"Tense," Owen said, "it's her baby sister."

"How are you," Mark asked.

"If it was Sloan," Owen asked.

"We have our own issues with Sloan," Mark said.

"School, attitude," Owen asked.

"Both and she's pregnant," Mark said.

"Wow," Owen said.

"Like 4 months, she's known the whole time she's lived with me," Mark ranted.

"We'll help you once Dani is discharged," Owen said, "were dividing and conquering tonight."

"You're here with Danika," Mark asked.

"Teddy stays," Owen said.

"Teddy I don't feel good," Danika whined.

"Are you going to throw up again," Teddy asked.

Evelny was closest and held the basin for Danika.

Megan held her hand over her mouth and ran from the room.

"Meg," Nathan said following her.

"They could have warned me," Megan moaned when she left the women's washroom.

"I don't think Dani knew," Nathan said, "are you okay?"

"Now," Megan said, "I disgust myself."

"It's okay Meg," Nathan said gently rubbing her back.

Megan's pager went off.

"I'm going to the pit," Megan said.

"Page if you need me," Nathan said.

"I will," Megan replied as she pressed the elevator button.

"We need Robbins," Teddy said, "she needs to order something to stop the vomiting."

"Your okay sweetheart," Evelyn soothed.

"Have some water," Teddy offered.

Danika drank some of the water and asked, "can I just sleep."

"You can," Teddy agreed.

Teddy pulled the blanket tighter around Danika and tucked her in, smoothing the teen's hair back and kissing the girl's forehead in a motherly gesture.
