"You're okay," Teddy asked, standing in the door of Danika's dorm for the summer.

"Teddy, it's a month I've done longer before," Danika said, "I'll call every day."

"I know you will," Teddy smiled.

"Teddy I'm fine," Danika said, "my roommates are here."

"I know you are," Teddy said.

"You can go," Danika said, "you don't have to hover."

"I'm trying," Teddy said.

"I know you're always a phone call away if I need you or Owen will come," Danika said.

"We will," Teddy said, "I'm going to go. See you in a month kiddo."

Danika hugged her, "bye Teddy."

"Be good, I love you," Teddy whispered, returning the hug.

"Love you two," Danika replied.

"Bye Danika," Teddy smiled.

"See you soon," Danika replied.

"You call your mom Teddy," Lauren, another girl in Danika's room asked.

"No she's my sister," Danika replied, "I live with her and her husband."

"Why," Lauren asked.

"Our dad passed away when I was seven and my mom two years ago," Danika said, "I've lived with Teddy for two years."

"Her husband is okay with it," Lauren said, "my step dad doesn't even want me around."

"Owen knew I was living with Teddy when they started dating," Danika said.

"So he's okay," Lauren asked.

"He's usually cool unless he fights with my English teacher," Danika said.

"Your school," Lauren asked.

"They both deal with my school," Danika said.

"Where do you go," Lauren asked.

"Park ridge full time," Danika said, "you?"

"Public school and I dance at Carswell academy in Vancouver BC," Lauren said.

"We're in Seattle," Danika said, "we've been to Vancouver a few times. They like going up to Whistler Owen my brother in law is teaching me to ski."

"Private ballet school and skiing Whistler," Lauren said, "what do they do? Do they have kids?"

"Their surgeons," Danika said, "my niece Allison is one. She's adorable. Your family?"

"My mom is on her own and I have two brothers," Lauren said, "I can't believe I got in here and on scholarship."

"I was surprised when I was accepted," Danika said, "Teddy isn't a fan of me being in New York for a month. I don't know why she grew up here."

"That's probably why," Lauren said, "my mom doesn't take us to Qusnel to see her family. Do you have relatives here?"

"No," Danika said, "there's only Teddy and I on that side and my mom's parents are in Mount Vernon."

"Is your sister okay? She looked sad," Lauren said.

"She's just being Teddy," Danika replied.

At 5:30 Teddy walked into a bar she hadn't been to in years.

"Teddy," Claire said, "beer?"

"Wine," Teddy smiled, "my treat."

"So motherhood," Claire said.

"Unexpected but wonderful," Teddy said, "Owen is great."

"Do you have pictures," Claire asked.

Teddy took out her phone and showed Claire a couple recent family photos.

"She's gorgeous," Claire said, "and I can't believe how much Danika has grown."

"She's 16," Teddy said, "we're teaching her to drive."

"You're a terrible driver," Claire said.

"Owen is teaching her, he's a better driver and more patient with teaching her to drive," Teddy said, "I'm always surprised how much he takes on that role for her."

"Your husband," Claire asked.

"Owen is amazing," Teddy showed her a wedding photo.

"He is good looking," Claire agreed, "in uniform?"

"Yes," Teddy smiled, "his dress one. Do you have pictures of your wife?"

"I do," Claire said, showing Teddy a picture of a blonde woman with a bright smile.

"She's stunning," Teddy said, "how long?"

"Five years," Claire said, "Teddy I knew about you and Allison."

"I'm sorry," Teddy said, "I knew it was wrong but I loved her anyway or thought I did."

"Owen," Claire said, "does he know?

"Yes," Teddy said, "Danika doesn't and she's been through too much to shake up her world again now,"

"Your stepmom," Claire asked, "what happened?"

"She overdosed," Teddy said, " two years ago, Danika was 14. Her school had to tell her. She was boarding at Park Ridge in Seattle so her principal and house mom told her. She called me and I had just been discharged from the army so I did what any loving sibling does I went to her."

"Custody though," Claire said.

"She's my sister there was never a question," Teddy replied, "I share it with Owen. It was his idea to have him listed as her guardian. It lets us both deal with school or medical stuff. She's had two surgeries in the time I've had her."

"What for," Claire asked, "she looked healthy."

"Ear tubes for chronic ear infections and an appendectomy," Teddy said.

"So being a good parent and an unpredictable emergency," Claire said, "you said your in Seattle which hospital?"

"Seattle Grace Mercy West," Teddy answered.

"The one that was shot a couple months ago," Claire asked.

"Yes," Teddy said, "Owen took a bullet through his shoulder but he's fine. Our girls were panicked but a few days at home the four of us and were okay."

"Why Teddy," Claire asked, "we were all friends."

"Honestly I don't know," Teddy said, "I know that's not an answer and I wouldn't accept that from Dani but I've gone over it in my head so many times. I was lost, alone and scared and she made me feel secure. I mixed that up for love."

"You had lost everything," Claire agreed, "your dad, your mom, they were keeping your sister from you."

"June kept her from me for 3 years," Teddy said, "put Dani in boarding school. I was in the army so I let it go and visited when I could then June suddenly denied me access."

"Dani," Claire asked, "she was six. What's she like now?"

"Smart, gentle, so good with Allison," Teddy said, "she's a good big sister that way. She's a good dancer she won't end up going professional but she likes it and it keeps her moving and active, it lets her create."

"School," Claire asked.

"Starting 11th," Teddy said, "we're looking at colleges. She's had trauma and was seeing a psychiatrist and is interested in being one."

"Really," Claire asked.

"She's smart, she works hard and Owen and I will guide her the whole way," Teddy said, "do you have kids?"

"We've fostered," Claire said, "we like doing it, none right now."

"It's rewarding," Teddy said, "in it's own way."

"We've only had one at a time how do you manage two," Claire asked.

"Busy," Teddy said, "Dani needs us more emotionally and Allison is still totally dependent."

Teddy asked the server for more wine.

"More kids," Claire asked.

"We don't know," Teddy said, "we're happy. Claire I'm so sorry for what I did and how much I hurt you."

"I can't hold it against you," Claire said, "I can't stay mad at anyone she loved and that loved her. Teddy we were all friends."

"We were," Teddy said.

"I would like to keep in touch," Claire said.

"That would be good," Teddy agreed.

Teddy's phone buzzed on the table, it was a text from Owen with a picture of Allison.

"She's grown," Teddy groaned, "since I left four days ago. That's another tooth."

"She's beautiful," Claire said, "I wish I could meet her."

"Maybe one day," Teddy said.

"Teddy," Claire said, "please make sure she knows how amazing the person she was named for was."

"I will," Teddy said, "she will always know that she was named for the best friend I ever had and what an incredible person she was named for."

"Please make sure she knows," Claire asked.

"I will," Teddy promised, "my girls will both know how amazing our Allison was."
