Kira was sitting in the dining table, having so breakfast with his father. Kyoko was upstairs getting ready for work. Junko and Emilia had just left the house to go on a mother and daughter shopping trip.
"You better hurry up and finish your cereal," Makoto said as he began eating some toast.
"Why?" Kira asked his father.
"Because your mother has a surprise for you," Makoto answered. "I think you will like it."
Kyoko walked into the dining room wearing her black skirt, black blazer and white shirt. She took a slice of toast from Makoto's plate.
"Kira, would you like to come to work with me?" Kyoko asked.
The young boy's eyes lit up. "You mean it?!"
"Yes." Kyoko nodded then took a bite of toast.
"Yes!" Kira said, excited.
"Finish your breakfast and get yourself dressed," Kyoko replied as she took a bite of the toast.
Kira finished his breakfast as fast as he could. He got up from the seat and took the bowl into the kitchen before heading upstairs. Kyoko had finished eating the toast.
"You owe me that slice of toast," Makoto said. He pushed his chair back and grabbed Kyoko by the hips and pulled her down. Her backside landed on his legs, and he pulled her in for a kiss. "Debt repaid."
Kyoko wrapped one arm around the back of Makoto's neck for better support. "Just a kiss?" She said, slightly surprised. "I was hoping you would suggest something more…productive."
"There wouldn't be enough time for something…productive. Besides, we can do that tonight if you prefer?"
Kyoko raised an eyebrow. "Alright who are you and what have you done with Makoto?"
"Huh?" Makoto said, surprised.
"It's rare for you to suggest sex," Kyoko replied.
"Well yeah, because you and Junko ask most nights, and you two wear me out. But I feel like there is a spring in my step and I can take both of you on."
"Famous last words," Kyoko smirked. She gives Makoto a small kiss on the cheek. "You better gather as much energy as you can. Junko and I are going to rock your world."
"I'm ready!" Makoto said, laughing.
Kyoko smiled at Makoto then she got off his legs. "How are things at the school?"
"Things are doing great," Makoto replied. "Everything is in place for me to take over as Headmaster at the end of the school year."
"That's good," Kyoko replied. "I've been taken away by how fast things are progressing."
"What do you mean?" Makoto asked, looking up at his wife.
"Emilia had done her first photoshoot a few weeks ago. I'm taking Kira to work so he can learn in what I do, while you're going to be Headmaster of a school that I have fond memories off. Plus the kids will be seven years old in a few months."
"I know, but we have a good life, and for me, that is the important thing. There is nothing else I want in life. What about you, Kyoko?"
"I'm the same. I have a perfect life. When I went to Hope's Peak, I didn't think I end up with a boyfriend and girlfriend."
"Yeah, it was a crazy first year at school," Makoto replied warmly. He took the last slice of toast and broke it in half. "Here you go."
"Thank you," Kyoko said. Then the pair munched on the toast.
"Excuse me Makoto, Kyoko," Kirumi said, walking into the dining room. "I'm ready to clean the dishes, so I was wondering if you had any?"
"I do," Makoto replied. "Kirumi you can take the day off if you want. I can clean the house today."
"I must go against your decision. I would be an awful maid if I weren't allowed to clean, let alone the owner of the house does the cleaning themselves."
Makoto rubbed the back of his head. "Kirumi we wouldn't see you a bad maid. Heck, you are the best maid we have ever hired."
Kyoko looked at her husband. "Kirumi is the only maid we have ever hired." Then she turned her head to the maid. "Kirumi, as my husband has said. We wouldn't see you in any bad light. If anything we would be happy if you took more days off."
"Am I doing a bad job?" Kirumi asked.
"No, but we are thinking about you," Kyoko replied. "You have given us so much support and look after the house over the years. But we haven't given you much in return."
"That's not true," Kirumi smiled. "You three and the kids have given me kindness and friendship. Please don't mistake my words. I do have friends from outside of work. But working here has been a joy."
"And it's been a pleasure to have you here," Kyoko nodded.
"I second that," Makoto replied. "I'm glad that Emilia tricked you into calling us by our first name. I was fed up being called Master."
"Yes, that girl has a smile that can make people's hearts melt," Kirumi said, shaking her head. "I was outsmarted by a six-year girl."
"Soon to be seven," Makoto chuckled. "Don't worry Kirumi, Emilia has been able to trick us a few times with that smile."
"I second that," Kyoko said.
Kira ran into the dining room wearing jeans and a jacket. "Mum, I'm ready!"
"Where are you off to Kira?" Kirumi asked.
"Mum is taking me to work!" The young boy said excitedly.
"Come on let's go," Kyoko said.
"Bye, dad! Bye, Kirumi!" Kira said as he waved at the two adults and ran to the front door.
"Wow, I've never seen him this excited," Makoto said stunned. "Kyoko-"
"I know what you are going to say," Kyoko replied. "Don't worry. I won't push him." She walked out of the dining room.
"The kids are growing up quick," Kirumi said as she took the plate from the table.
"Tell me about it, Emilia becoming a model and Kira is taking his first steps into what a detective life is like. It feels like yesterday when they were born." Makoto paused as he remembers that day all too well. "I acted like such a fool that day." He hung his head in shame. "I treated everyone poorly."
"Anyone who had just lost their job and had two kids on the way would have acted in the same way you did. But you quickly apologies when I got through to you. Now, look at you."
"Yes, things have turned out quite well, haven't they?" Makoto smiled.
"Indeed they have," Kirumi smiled in return.
20 minutes later
Kyoko and Kira were standing outside the police station.
"You ready?" Kyoko asked.
"Yes, I am mum," Kira replied.
"Good, remember to stick beside me, and if we are lucky, we might get a low-level case to work with."
"Does that mean you will take me out?" Kira asked.
"Yes, providing it's safe to do so, I dare not think what your father will say or do. If you got hurt."
"He would stop kissing and hugging you."
"Now that's a scary thought," Kyoko said, shaking her head. Then she began to smile for a few seconds. "Look at how soft I've become."
"Huh?" Kira said, looking at his mother.
"It's nothing, come on, let's head inside, and I will show you my office."
The pair walked in and took a flight of stairs to reach the second floor. Kira's eyes widened when the size of the room was a giant office. He saw about 25 police officers some were sitting at desks talking to each other about cases while the others were on computers.
On both sides of each room had a few rooms, which housed detectives and the boss of the station.
"Wow, mum! This place is big!" Kira said, excited.
"Yes, this is our hub," Kyoko replied. "This is where we get most of our work done, while they are police officers downstairs. They deal more with putting criminals in cells dealing with that paperwork. Follow me."
Kyoko walked to the right-hand side of the room with Kira following his mother, and they reached Kyoko's office. She opened the door and opened it, and the pair walked in.
Kyoko's office was small, which housed the things she needed, which was a desk, computer, chairs and a filing cabinet.
Kira let out a gasp when he saw a big load of paperwork sitting on her desk.
"Welcome to a life of being a detective Kira," Kyoko said as she sat down in her chair and booted up her computer.
"That's boring," Kira said, almost crushed.
Kyoko looked at her son. "Do you think I'm out every single minute of my shift stopping bad guys?"
"Well yeah because it's you mum, you make the streets safe," Kira replied.
Kyoko let out a small chuckle. "Well I can't be brilliant all the time, paperwork needs to be done sadly."
"So this it then?" Kira asked.
"I'm afraid so," Kyoko replied as began to go through the paperwork. "But I do have challenges for you to see how aware you are to certain things.
"Like what?" Kira said as he sat down at the desk in the guest chair.
"I have some old case files in my cabinet that I've taken out important details which give away the answer. Your job is to look through the remaining case files and put the clues together."
"But mum, I'm only six, I'm nowhere as smart as you," Kira replied.
"That's the very same words I said to my grandfather when I was your age," Kyoko replied.
"They were?" Kira said, shocked.
Kyoko nodded. "Yes, but he told me to prove him wrong. So, I'm hoping you can do the same to me?"
" Ok, I will try my best," he said as hopped off his seat. But he paused when he heard a knock on the door.
"Ah, so you must be Kira Naegi," a male voice said.
Kira turned around to see an old man wearing a suit standing at the door.
"Kira this my boss, Kazuo Tengen," Kyoko said.
Kira did a quick bow. "Nice to met you, Mr Tengen."
The old man laughed. "Good manners."
"He gets them from my husband," Kyoko replied. "How can I help you, Tengen?"
"We have a small robbery at a shop downtown. Jewellers, the owner wasn't hurt, but he is shaken up."
Kira turned around to face his mother.
Kyoko looked at her son. "I think we have found our case, Kira."
"We are going?" Kira said, shocked.
"Yes, I wasn't kidding about going out if we got a case unless you want to stay here and do that paperwork for me?"
"Paperwork is boring. Let's go, mum!" Kira replied, excited.
Kazuo burst out laughing. "You sound like a detective already son."
Kyoko stood up. "Have you got the details Tengen?"
"One of the officers have got it, I wish you luck Kira Naegi," Kazuo smiled.
20 minutes later
Kyoko and Kira were sitting in the car outside the jewellers. Kira was nervous; he couldn't believe he was about to do his first case.
Kyoko got out of the car, and Kira followed. He stood beside his mother while nervous. His excitement was building.
"Here you go Kira," Kyoko said, giving her son a black notepad and a pen.
"What are these for?" Kira asked.
"You need to write down clues or things that don't match up," Kyoko replied.
"Oh ok," Kira said as he looked at the notepad. "What about you mum?"
"I've got one inside my blazer if I need it. Come on, let's head inside."
The pair walked into the jewellers, and they saw a middle-aged man standing behind a counter which was broken.
"Hello, can I help you?" The man asked.
"I'm Detective Kyoko Naegi. I was informed that you were robbed."
"A detective?" The man said, annoyed. "A mere police officer would have been enough."
Kyoko looked at Kira. "Go round and begin your investigation."
"Ok," Kira said nervously. He opened around the shop with his notepad open.
"Investigation? I've been robbed!" The man said in anger.
"I suggest you control your anger sir," Kyoko said coldly. "Now, may I begin with some questions."
Kira looked around the shop, and it wasn't a big shop. But something he did notice that no other counters were broken. He wrote that into his notepad.
"So whoever robbed this place was only after one thing," Kira said to himself.
He walked back over to Kyoko, who was being shown a picture of what was stolen. It was a necklace that was worth 700,000 yen.
"Did you have any keen buyers?" Kyoko asked.
"I had a few guys interested in buying it. But there was one really keen guy who wanted to buy it," the man said. "But I told him it wasn't for sale."
"Wait. Why?" Kira asked. "If you've put it in the cabinet along with the other stuff to sale. Then you have been giving customers the wrong information."
"Oh yeah how so?" The man said, annoyed.
"If you have no intention of selling that necklace, then why put it on display for people to see and think it's available to buy? You should have an only display counter."
Kyoko felt proud. Kira was a natural.
"That's enough from you, boy!" The man growled. "Let the adults talk this out."
Kyoko's eyes narrowed on the man. "I suggest you give my son more respect."
The man saw the glare from Kyoko and gulped.
The door opened, and everyone saw a young man in a suit walk in with a woman who was wearing casual clothing. The man looked nervous and scared while the woman looked angry.
"That's him!" The shop owner said, pointing at the man in the suit. "That's the man who stole the necklace."
"Well hurry up, Mako!" The woman said.
Mako walked up to the counter, and he pulled out the necklace from his pocket. "I'm sorry for stealing this."
The woman walked up and looked at the shop owner. "How much is it to repair the counter?"
The shop owner was confused. "Who are you?"
"I'm this stupid man's wife," the woman said. "I was horrified when my husband told me what he did. So I tell him to hand this necklace back."
"Why did you steal it, sir?" Kira asked.
"I wanted to give my w-wife something nice, I saw t-this necklace, and I thought it was perfect," Mako said nervously while he was shaking. "I love my wife very much, and I want to treat her the best I can."
"Just like my father," Kira whispered as he put his head down to think.
The woman looked at Kyoko. "Are you a detective or something?"
"Yes, I am a detective," Kyoko replied. Then she looked at the shop owner. "Do you want to press charges about this man?"
The shop owner shook his head. "No, if this man's wife is willing to pay to get the counter fix then I'm ok with this."
"Oh thank god," the woman said, rolling her eyes. "Some times, I wonder what made me fall in love with you honestly. You can do some stupid things from time to time Mako."
"I'm sorry for the trouble I caused. I just wanted to make you happy," Mako said sadly.
"I will have a word with you, sir then you are free to go," Kyoko said, looking at the man.
Kira looked on while still in deep thought.
20 minutes later
Kyoko and Kira were back in the office. Kira hadn't said a word since they left the shop and Kyoko was growing somewhat concerned.
"I thought you did well today Kira," Kyoko said as she put her pen down. "You asked good questions."
"Thanks, mum," Kira said quietly.
"Kira, what's wrong?" Kyoko asked.
"I… Mum, I'm struggling to understand why that man stole that necklace. He said he loved his wife. But you don't do bad things for the people you love."
"Kira…what is the best way I can put this… Love makes you stupid."
"What?" Kira replied, shocked.
"When you love someone, you would do anything for them. Protect them, do what is best for them or give them gifts. Remember last year how your father and I weren't talking to each other during our holiday in London?"
Kira nodded.
"We had fallen out because I wanted to make sure he did what was best for him on a particular subject. But I didn't consider his feelings on the matter. Just like how that man doesn't consider how angry his wife would be. Pretty much you do a stupid thing on the fly."
"I think I get it," Kira said.
"When you are older you will understand better," Kyoko replied.
"Is it like how a guy would rob a bank to get enough money to pay for his sick daughter's operation?" Kira asked.
"Yes, I guess that would count," Kyoko replied. "But that more of a case of love makes you bad. Because that man would have thought long and hard about robbing a bank, may I ask where you came up with that idea?"
"My father was watching a movie, and I caught some of it."
"Did the daughter get better?" Kyoko asked.
"Yes, the man allowed the cops to arrest him. I think it was the guilt that played a part. But the owner of the bank offered to pay for the operation. I think there was a time skip where the daughter was who around ten years old was waiting outside the prison for her father to come out."
"Interesting, I'm guessing this is where you began to question love?"
"Kind of," Kira replied. "I didn't bother asking my father. Because he was enjoying the film."
"When you grow up, you will understand everything better. I suggest you not think about it right now," Kyoko replied.
"Ok," Kira replied.
There was a knock on the door, and it opened with Kazuo walking in. "So how was your first case Naegi?"
Kira turned around. "It went ok, sir. Nothing much happened, but my mother said I did a good job at asking questions."
"Good stuff," Kazuo smiled. "Kirigiri, may I have a word with you in my office."
"Kira stay here please," Kyoko said. She stood up and followed Kazuo out of the office.
Hours later
Kyoko and Kira arrived home after finishing work. It was pretty much dull after their adventure out to the jewellers.
"Hmm, that smells good," Kyoko said as she smelt food coming from the kitchen. She and Kira took their shoes off, and both headed for the kitchen to see Makoto cooking.
"That smell great dad!" Kira said.
Makoto turned his head to see his wife and son at the door. "Cheers son, how was your day?"
"Dull when we were in the office. But we were out on a case, and mum says I done great."
"Good stuff. You will be a detective in no time," Makoto smiled.
"Kira," Kyoko said. "Go and watch some telly, while I help your father make dinner."
"No need," Makoto replied. "It will be just the three of us. Junko phoned me and told me that she and Emilia are having dinner at Mukuro's place."
"I was going to leave and get changed anyway," Kira said, and he left the kitchen.
"So, how was he?" Makoto asked.
"Everything he told you, I was proud of our son," Kyoko said warmly. "There is something I need to tell you."
"Which is?" Makoto replied.
"My boss has offered me the role of the head of the station. In a years times."
Makoto's eyes lit up. "Kyoko's that's amazing! Are you going to accept it?"
"Already have," Kyoko smiled.
Makoto smiled in return, and he walked over and gave Kyoko a quick kiss. "Headmaster of a school, boss of a police station and a well known famous model. The money we will rake in," he joked.
"Yes, it's a significant change from the time we were skint after buying this house. But it has been worth it. I wouldn't change everything."
"Same," Makoto said warmly.
