Okay guys so I've read back through my last few chapters and they're a mess, but I'm going to stick to my promise of spouting any crap that my mind throws at me and then I'll go back and fix the typos later. Thank you to the user who favourited my storyX I was beginning to worry that this fanfic line had died off.
Chapter 6
Our sense of time had gone out of the window completely. After maybe the third order, the waitress just started to keep the coffee coming and before we knew it, it was time to head back for dinner.
Zach wasn't so bad to be honest, he wanted to know about my majors and life at high school. I walked him through my years at Gallagher, leaving out the part about Josh. He didn't need to know that and I didn't quite trust him with that particular story yet.
"So..." I started, "what about you? What was your high school story?" I asked. I wasn't just making conversation, I was genuinely intrigued. He slowed slightly, the smirk dropping from his face as his eyes looked to the ground.
"Well it was a boarding school, so we stayed there through term time. Some of us stayed during breaks too, to catch up on classes, you know?" He had grinded to a hault now and was kicking the pavement under his feet.
"A boarding school? I think I'd prefer that, being able to wake up and not have to be on time for the school bus. Or not have your mom questioning you every night about relationships." I thought of the idea and it seemed strange to me, not being awoken by the fire alarm every morning as my mom burned waffles.
Zach's eyes shot up to meet mine, his expression unreadable and dark as he spat, "Trust me, Gallagher Girl. You wouldn't want to sleep in my school."
I didn't know what to make of that so when he started off walking, I followed silently. I was taken aback. Why wouldn't I want to sleep in his school? I mean besides it being all boys, what could have been so bad about it? Zach clearly didn't want to speak about it further so I didn't push him. As we arrived back at the dorms, I noticed a woman standing outside of the door. She was tall with chocolate hair that fell down below her waist and an extremely beautiful hourglass figure. I couldn't believe it.
"Mom?!" I shouted as I approached the woman. Her hair whipped around and her face contorted into a brilliant smile. It was rare I got to see my mom's real smile, it seemed as though the moment my dad died her smile was replaced with a robotic one. The one that was reserved for customer service and small talk.
"Cammie Dear, how lovely to see you. I thought I'd drop off your late graduation present myself." She gestured to the royal blue BMW M8 beside her on the road as if it were a box of chocolates. My jaw almost dropped. I'd never been trusted with an engine bigger than a 1.2L, or one that had an actual gear box. I wrapped her in a warm embrace, not really realising how much I'd missed her until she was here. Maybe that was why Zach didn't like his school. Oh shit, Zach! I pulled away from the hug and stepped back to his side. My mom seemed to make the connection at this point and it looked like she'd seen a ghost. I tore my head from side to side like I was in a cartoon, watching Zach and my mom stare at eachother with the strangest of expressions. Did they know eachother?
"Uh... Mom, this is Zach, Zach this is my Mom - Rachel Morgan." My words came out more like a question than a statement. This whole situation was weird. Mom plastered her robot smile back onto her face, "Zach, how lovely to meet you." She extended her hand for hm to shake and he took it slowly, almost as if he was nervous.
"And you Mrs Morgan. How are you finding Georgetown?" Zach seemed the perfect gentleman to my mom. It was strange to see him acting like that, there wasn't even a hint of a smirk or sarcasm. Look at me, talking about him like I know everything about him. I thought to myself.
"Oh it's just excellent. It's changed a lot since I went to college here," she replied, raising an eyebrow. Any hint of discomfort had been wiped from her body and her shoulders had visibly relaxed.
Zach let go of her hand and flashed his million dollar smile, "Well I hope you have fun looking around. I'm going to head on up to my room to get sorted before dinner, it was nice to meet you Mrs Morgan." And without a second glance in my direction, Zach was out of sight.
Suspicion consumed me and I could feel it beginning to bubble over the top, "what was that about?" I queried. My mom shrugged and tossed me the keys to the car. "Oh nothing, I just didn't expect you to be with a boy." She walked around the car to the passenger side and looked back up in my direction.
"So, aren't you going to take this baby out for a spin?" I laughed and nodded, clicking the fob to unlock the doors and climbing in. The dashboard was completely modernised and there was twice the amount of room compared to my last car. The sharp smell of new leather consumed my sinuses as I adjusted the mirrors and seat to my level of comfort. I turned the fob in the ignition and it hummed to life. Revving the engine, I turned to my mom and smiled, "thank you, mom."
"No problem sweetie, now just remember to go easy on the clutch."
We drove around town until the sun began to set. It seemed like we had never been apart. My mom talked away about life in Roseville and Gallagher and I returned with my experience of college so far. To my surprise, she didn't ask for any details on Zach. Or any boys for that matter. When I told her about what had happened with Josh at the party, I saw fury in her eyes, but all she replied to it was "I'm glad you found a friend like Grant." Before we knew it, it was time to go back. My mom insisted on walking to the train station, she said she wanted to make the most out of her day before heading back. I almost offered to walk there with her, but the evident lack of food in my system was starting to catch up with me. I couldn't run on coffee forever. Before we parted, my mom gave me a chest squeezing hug. At this moment, she looked at me like I was a child again for the first time in years before saying something that chilled me to the bone, "that boy is trouble Cameron."
