A.N: Hello, everyone! Here is my final entry for Momoharu Week 2022 with the prompt Crossover. I'm sorry it's a bit late! I hope you still enjoy this crossover entry!

Day Seven: Twins Across Universes

It was rare for the weather to be so lovely early into spring. There was a little breeze, allowing the lovers' hair to flow gently, but the sky was cloudless, and the sun's rays were neither too warm nor too cold.

Maki and Kaito walked in the sand hand-in-hand, silently listening to the sound of the waves as they hit the coast. Nearly no one else had apparently thought to visit the beach today, so it was a pure moment of peace, far from the constant craziness of Hope's Peak Academy.

"I wish I could have seen the sea more often as a child," Maki said, her voice sounding nostalgic.

They stopped, interrupting their trails of footprints in the sand. Maki stared into the distance, and soon enough, so did Kaito. If you asked him, it did not look as pretty as the starry skies, but the colors remained lovely.

Not as much as his girlfriend, but still.

"It is nice, yeah," Kaito agreed, threading his soft fingers with hers. "The sea seems infinite when you stare at it like this. To think it is nothing compared to the vastness of the universe..."

Maki rolled her eyes. Whatever the subject was, leave it to the Ultimate Astronaut to find a way to connect it to space in some way, no matter how intricate.

"You'll philosophize later," Maki instructed, already on the move again.

The two resumed their quiet stroll, their minds set on enjoying their beach date. Kaito had been the one to suggest they spend their afternoon at the beach, promising his girlfriend they would have a good time. As usual, his date plans had been right on the money.

He was an idiot, but Maki would at least give him that.

"Say, Maki Roll, have you ever gone scuba-divin- Ow!"

Kaito suddenly turned around as he was hit on the back of the head. Looking at his feet, the purple-haired boy quickly found the culprit behind this cowardly attack in a plain white beach ball.

"H-Hey, who threw that?!" Kaito asked, nursing the back of his head and looking around.

"Probably the gods to put your brain back in place," Maki offered ironically, assisting her boyfriend in his search for the mysterious attacker. In the end, she found them even before Kaito did. "I would bet this guy over there is behind it."

The astronaut nodded as they stared at a grey-haired boy not too far away from them. Next to him was a girl with long black hair tied into two pigtails. Even from afar, Kaito could see an arrogant look on the boy's face, which... displeased him, to say the least.

"I'm going to teach this guy a lesson!" he said passionately, rolling up his sleeve and running towards the two strangers.

"W-What?" Surprised, Maki was a step behind as she grabbed the beach ball and ran after her boyfriend. "Y-You're not going to pick up a fight because of a beach ball, are you?!" Knowing Kaito, this was very much a possibility. She would be lying if she said the boy did not look slightly cocky to her, but this was still very much an overreaction.

Maki wished Kaito stopped acting so embarrassedly in public from time to time...

Luckily for the astronaut, the two strangers did not appear to be in a hurry to run away. Good, because he really wanted to have a word with him. How rude was it to hit someone with a beach ball and not even move to apologize?!

"W-What's your deal, man?! I'm here enjoying a date with my girlfriend, and you throw a ball at me like that!" Kaito said, getting angrier and angrier. "That's not cool at all!"

The other boy didn't look impressed. "So?"

Maki caught up to her boyfriend as his face morphed in frustration. On her end, her cheeks were tainted pink due to the embarrassment. Most likely, she would need to clean up his mess.

As usual.

"Whaddaya mean, 'so?!' You better apologize right now!"

"K-Kaito, stop th-"

"Ha, you think you're scary, big man? Eat this!"

It all happened instantly, but before Kaito could move to dodge it, a powerful-looking punch was headed straight for his face. The unfamiliar girl beside the equally unknown boy looked annoyed, tapping her foot in the sand.

Luckily for the Ultimate Astronaut, it just so happened that he had a girlfriend with above-average reflexes. Calling them that may have actually been the understatement of the century. It was more supersonic speed than reflexes at this point.

Maki dropped the beach ball, caught the fist with her hand before it was a threat, and started twisting the boy's wrist. In a second, embarrassment had turned into fury.

"Do you want to die...?" the former assassin whispered, voice filled with venom and eyes glowing red.

She made sure to remove the cocky look from the boy's face by twisting his whole arm with no difficulty. An intimidating aura surrounded Maki. No matter how much an idiot he was, Kaito was the boy she loved. Whatever the reason, anyone who dared fight him would have to suffer the consequences.

"What have you gotten yourself into again, you idiot?!" the girl next to the unknown boy exclaimed, breaking her silence. She turned towards the furious Maki and bowed her head slightly, although it appeared to be begrudgingly. "Excuse the idiot."

"Certainly not," Maki told her, forcing a pained sound from the boy. She released his wrist in favor of his throat and started choking him. "You tried to fight the wrong person, you little piece of sh-"

"N-No!"

Kaito watched with wide eyes as the other girl tried to yank Maki's arm away from the boy's throat. However, even before he could think of helping his girlfriend – who did not need it – it happened.

"W-What the?!"

Maki released the boy and stepped back in surprise as a thick purple smoke suddenly enveloped him.

"A-Aaah, what's happening?!" Kaito freaked out but found himself unable to look away. "M-Maki Roll?!"

"D-Don't 'Maki Roll' me!" Maki told him, (obviously) unaware of what was happening. The cloud of smoke gradually evaporated, but it was still too thick to see through. Maki pointed at the other girl, who had taken a step back with a grumble. "Explain what this is at once!" Maki ordered.

However, no explanations were necessary as the smoke disappeared, giving Maki and Kaito the answers they sought. Well, with one answer came a bunch of new questions.

"H-H-Huh?!"

"W-What... is this...?"

The lovers looked at each other confusingly as an ox appeared before their eyes, a pile of clothes only remaining in the sand. To put it lightly, they were quite bewildered. A boy stood there a second ago, and now there was no trace of him left, except for a bunch of clothing articles!

"Great... Look what you two have done..." the other girl muttered annoyingly, glancing at Maki disapprovingly.

"H-Hey, what just h-happened here?!" Kaito stuttered, fear settling inside him. Until today, he had believed himself to only be afraid of ghosts, but this did not hold true anymore. Whatever had just occurred, he was definitely scared of that too! "D-Did this guy just turn into a freaking ox right before our eyes?!"

"You, explain this," Maki ordered again, taking a step closer to the girl. "And get on with it."

"M-Maki Roll! I-I think we need to make a run for it! T-These people are monsters!"

Before the astronaut could move an inch, Maki glared at him, freezing him in place. She looked at the unfamiliar girl threateningly, deciding she would not leave before figuring out what she had just witnessed.

"Who the hell are you?! Why did this guy transform into an ox?!"

If Maki had been told she would ever say this in her life...

"I-It's because you grabbed him and got too close to him!" the other girl exclaimed, matching Maki's frustrated tone. "W-Why couldn't you have just given the idiot his ball back and moved on?!"

Before Maki could answer, though, another cloud of smoke appeared and enveloped the animal.

"A-Aaah, it's happening again!"

At this point, Maki was growing old of Kaito's outbursts. For someone claiming to be brave and courageous, he sure got distracted by many things.

This time, once the smoke cleared out, the boy was back. The other girl looked slightly relieved, although something else caught Kaito and Maki's attention.

"Damn, I didn't expect this to happen..." the unknown boy muttered.

Kaito stared at the boy he had been eager to fight only a minute ago. However, something was very wrong. Maybe not as wrong as turning into an ox, but still wrong!

"H-He's naked!"

"Oh, for the love of God...!" Maki muttered annoyingly, turning away with a long and exasperated sigh.

Boyfriend and girlfriend waited for the boy to get dressed up again before turning around.

"Now that all of this appears to be over..." Maki sighed again. "May we please have an explanation? I don't have all day."

"You sure don't sound nice," the boy told her, crossing his arms. "My name is Hatsuharu Sohma, and this is my girlfriend, Isuzu Sohma. Nickname's Haru, and hers' Rin. Not sure it's nice to meet you."

"H-Hey, that's just rude!" Kaito stepped in front of Maki, pointing an accusatory finger at Haru. "Y-You're the one who hit me on the head with that beach ball! L-Learn some manners!"

Maki rolled her eyes. "Kaito, that's enough."

Rin did the same, grabbing Haru's arm. "Right... You're acting like an idiot, Haru..."

The two boys hmphed and looked away, unhappy with how their 'discussion' was coming to an end.

"We can't explain what you've just seen," Rin told them, but especially Maki, considering she appeared to be the most rational one. Anyone would have reached that conclusion, honestly. "And you wouldn't believe it, anyway. But we cannot leave before you swear to remain silent about it."

"Yeah, things will get pretty bad for everyone here if you blab, so better keep silent," Haru added. The threat behind this did not go over Maki's head. "Deal?"

"W-What do you mean, 'deal?!'"

"Alright, then. Keep your secrets," Maki said, cutting the astronaut. "I'm not sure I care, anyway. And whatever your story is, it's only going to freak out the idiot, and I'd rather not have that..."

Rin nodded. "Good," she said. "Thanks, I guess."

Maki nodded back, unable to help but observe how much that girl looked like her. Her hair was a tad darker, but it was tied the same way, she had a slender figure, and while her eyes weren't red, they were dark and threatening. The former assassin was glad to learn that another girl on this planet was as cold as she, too.

"Hey, this Maki Roll girl kinda looks like you, Rin," Haru pointed out, shamelessly pointing at Maki.

Of course, this didn't fail to irritate Kaito... again. "D-Don't call her that!" he exclaimed. "I'm the only one allowed to call Maki Roll 'Maki Roll,' okay?! A-And how can you be so impolite, pointing at people like that!"

Maki rolled her eyes. His argument would have been sound, given he wasn't pointing at the boy at this very moment, and Kaede and Himiko did not call her Maki Roll almost all the time.

"It's fine, Kaito," she assured him. "My name is Maki Harukawa, though, and I'd prefer if you called me that. As you probably figured, this idiot's name is Kaito. Kaito Momota."

"Luminary of the Stars!" Kaito added with a sudden burst of enthusiasm. "If you're willing to apologize, I don't mind making you my sidekicks, you two! I can never have enough of them!"

Haru laughed. "Haha, good one! Who would want to be your sidekick, pal? Your girlfriend just said you're an idiot!"

"Stop pretending you aren't one yourself," Rin pointed out, crossing her arms and closing her eyes for a moment. "Please excuse him... He's so embarrassing..."

"I know the feeling," Maki said annoyingly, giving a quick glance at her own boyfriend. "Well, if you don't mind, we'll get going now. We were in the middle of a date."

"Alright-"

"Nah, we've got time, Maki Roll!" Kaito quickly cut Rin, saying, "Since these two are a couple, let's go to the bar close-by and make it a double date!"

Sometimes, Maki wished he would stop impulsively getting ideas.

"Sounds good to me!" Haru agreed, adding, "I'm down for a drink right now!"

The two girlfriends did not sound too pleased, but before they could object, the boys were already marching ahead.

"They sure got along quickly..." Maki said.

"Birds of a feather flock together, as they say..." Rin added.

The two girls were forced to follow after their idiotic boyfriends, their date schedules wholly messed up by this sudden development.

One of the bar's servers gave the four young adults their drinks. Maki got a coffee, Rin got a glass of lemonade, while Kaito and Haru got a coke.

"I apologize for choking you earlier," Maki told Haru, deciding that if her boyfriend was going to get along with the mysterious boy, she may as well not have a grudge against him.

"It's fine," he said dismissively. "I should have said sorry for throwing the ball at Kaito like that. I didn't do it on purpose, but I guess that doesn't make it any more okay."

Rin gave an ironic chuckle. "Happy to see you can act like an adult sometimes," she told her boyfriend. "Anyway, let's not talk about it any further. That would be a waste of time."

Maki could not have agreed more. The more time passed, the more similarities between Rin and herself the former assassin noticed.

"So, um... I've been meaning to ask, but..." Kaito began, his voice showing some hesitation. "Are you two married or something? You look kinda young, but you have the same last name, so..."

"No, we're just members of a big family, that's all," Rin answered before Haru could. "We're not related by blood, though, so don't worry about a thing."

They took a sip of their drinks, enjoying the peaceful silence. Maki couldn't say she was fond of Haru, but he seemed more likable than she had initially given him credit for. On Kaito's end, he was unsure what to think about Rin since... she was (to him) a Maki without Maki's qualities and cuteness. Still, she sounded friendly enough.

"That sounds cool," he said, giving the other couple a small smile. "Not as cool as space, though! I bet you two didn't know that I plan to become the best astronaut in the world, right?!"

Haru gave him a suspicious look. "You, becoming the best astronaut in the world? Are you for real...?"

"H-Hey, don't be mean!" Kaito protested. "You should know that I have the title of Ultimate Astronaut, so I have my chances!"

Let's not tell them that you cheated on the exams, right...? Maki thought amusingly, taking another sip of her coffee.

"Ultimate Astronaut? What's that? Not something you made up, I hope?"

Kaito grinned, knowing it was his time to shine. "Nope! Maki Roll and I are the real deal! Students from the one and only Hope's Peak Academy!"

Rin and Haru looked at each other for a moment, then back at their two new acquaintances.

"What's... Hope's Peak Academy supposed to be...?" the former wondered.

This time, Maki and Kaito looked at each other with surprise. "You have never heard about Hope's Peak Academy?" Maki asked them, her eyes betraying her shock. Rin and Haru shook their heads. "I didn't expect that... Well, it is our high school. It's said to be the best in Japan, where students are scouted for their talent. We're called Ultimate students... I know it's hard to believe when you see an idiot like him..."

She pointed at Kaito for good measure, who pouted.

"You're Ultimates? That sounds like bragging to me!" Haru declared confidently, adding, "So, what's your talent, Maki Roll?"

Before Kaito could take offense to the nickname, they both realized they had bigger fish to fry. Maki could not help but panic slightly as the question – and its implications – reached her ears. Kaito's dumb look quickly turned into a more serious one, too.

This was one question they simply could not answer honestly. After all, Maki was the Ultimate Assassin; even if her days killing people were behind her, that fact remained. The suddenness of the question had her lose her composure.

"She's the Ultimate Child Caregiver," Kaito replied in a heartbeat, his voice not wavering. Maki looked at him, wanting to sigh a long sigh of relief. "You should see her around kids! She says she hates them but can entertain them for hours!"

Maki smiled at Kaito. Haru and Rin figured it was as thanks for the compliment, but it actually was for the impromptu save. She had admittedly not expected her boyfriend to be able to lie so convincingly on the spot.

Good.

"That sounds nice," Rin said, her voice the nicest since the two couples had met. "We... know someone who's really good around kids, too. Contrary to you, though... I think she enjoys them."

"You can say that again..." Haru added with a sigh. "Kids are so dumb, though."

Both girls glared at him for that statement. Maki then blushed when she realized what she had indirectly confessed. Well, kids could be a handful sometimes, but she would be lying to herself if she didn't say they could be cute.

Except for when they cried. Or when they pestered her. Or when they fought.

"So," Rin began, changing the topic. "How did the two of you get together?"

Kaito was all too eager to answer this question. "Maki Roll was being really cold at first, not getting close to anyone! But I'm stubborn, so I tried to befriend her until she finally gave in!" The grin on his face was the broadest and silliest Maki had seen. "Then, she totally fell in love with me!"

"D-Don't say it so casually!" Maki protested, grabbing one of her pigtails, fidgeting with it, and blushing. "B-Besides, you fell in love with me, too, you idiot!"

"F-Fair enough..." Kaito conceded, scratching the back of his head. "So, anyway, what about you, guys? Got any cute stories?"

"O-Oh, um..." Hesitance filled Rin's voice as she spoke up, running her thumb over the rim of her glass. "I-It's nothing remarkable... W-We were simply together pretty much all the time since we were kids, t-that's all..."

"Y-Yep, nothing else..." Haru added with a nod that was less than convincing.

They kept that to themselves, but Maki and Kaito quickly understood there was something fishy behind this. The astronaut did not appear to give it more thought than necessary, but it got Maki thinking.

Could this be related to what we saw earlier...? The former assassin wondered, trying not to make it too obvious she was asking herself questions. It's just a hunch, but something so weird could be related...

She pushed the thought to the side and decided to return to it later if necessary. Right now, enjoying the unexpected double date was her priority. It wasn't what she had planned to do with her afternoon, but she might as well try to have fun, right?

After finishing their first one, the two couples shared another drink, chatting about different things. Kaito was the most chatty of the four by a mile, but Haru and Rin appeared more comfortable after some time. The boys' ego led them to an arm-wrestling match, which Haru won, much to Kaito's dismay.

In retaliation, the astronaut rambled about space for about thirty more minutes.

Everything was going pretty well, all things considered, until Kaito's phone rang.

*beeep* *beeep* *beeep* *beeep*

"Oh, sorry," he said, taking out his cellphone and reading the caller's ID. "Gotta take this."

Maki paid attention and immediately recognized the voice on the other line.

"Hey, Shuichi! ... Yeah, Maki Roll and I are on a date with a couple of friends we met! ... Oh, shit, you're right! ... C-Could you please give us a few minutes to get here...? ... Thanks, sidekick, you're the best! B-Be right there!"

He hung up and replaced his phone inside his pocket sheepishly.

"Oh," Maki said, realizing what the call's contents were. "We forgot about training."

"Yeah, you got that right," Kaito told her. "We'll have to go, guys. One of our friends and his GF are waiting for us at Hope's Peak for a workout session, so we've gotta get going."

Haru laughed mockingly. "Yeah, you better get all the training you can get, ma-"

*beeep* *beeep* *beeep* *beeep*

"Oh, that's my phone," the boy added, growling when he saw the caller's name. He took the call and exclaimed, "What do you want, you annoying cat?!"

Kaito and Maki looked at one another with surprise. 'Annoying cat' was not a nickname they had heard before...

"Don't call me that! And get your asses here right now! Everyone's waiting for you!"

It was also unexpected for the other person – assumably a boy – to be so loud. The guy could give Miu a run for her money!

"Hey, we get there when we get there!" Haru nearly screamed, attracting the attention of every customer around. Rin looked away in shame, trying to make herself as small as possible. "Wait a few minutes, will you?!"

"Well, hurry it up! Tohru is already halfway done with making dinner!"

The other boy hung up on Haru, who looked furious and on the verge of kicking something.

"I'll kill this guy someday!"

"B-Be quiet! D-Don't you think you've embarrassed me enough as is?!"

Kaito and Maki sweatdropped as they watched the other couple bicker, drawing even more attention. It amused Kaito because he could almost see himself and Maki arguing in Haru and Rin.

"Anyway," Maki cut them before things got out of hand. "We have to go."

Kaito smiled, observing as his girlfriend's words ended the argument. "Hey, I know! Let's exchange phone numbers! That way, we can have other double dates in the future!" he suggested.

"Sure," Haru said, taking out his phone again.

"If you want..." Rin added.

Kaito and Maki gave their phone numbers and waited for the other couple to add them to their contacts. Maki wasn't sure if they would ever see each other again, but if she said no to Kaito, she would never hear the end of it, given how stubborn he could be.

"We really have to get going, Kaito," Maki said, imagining Kaede's pout as she and Shuichi waited for them.

"R-Right... Y-You heard Maki Roll, guys. It was nice meeting ya'!"

"I guess it was, yeah," Haru replied, a small smile appearing at the corner of his lips. "I wanna have a fight with you for real the next time we see each other, 'kay?"

Rin rolled her eyes. "I'm sorry we didn't get off to a great start. It wouldn't have happened had Haru not been such an idiot."

"It's fine," Maki assured her, smiling at the other girl. "I did act... rashly, too."

"Well, see you, guys!"

"Yeah, bye!"

With those parting words, the two couples went their separate ways. Maki took Kaito's hand as they began to head back towards Hope's Peak for training with their two classmates. It was chillier than earlier on the beach, but the breeze was still pleasant.

"Those two sure were something," Kaito stated with a chuckle. "Didn't think we'd ever meet people so peculiar outside of Hope's Peak."

"And that's not even mentioning the elephant in the room," Maki said before adding, "Or, well... the ox in the room, I should say."

Kaito laughed. "Yeah, that was the weirdest part... Do you think they're magicians or something? I mean, this can't be right, right?"

Good question... Maki thought, unable to come up with an answer that satisfied her. "I suppose you'll have to ask Himiko."

"Yeah, guess I'll have... *growl*"

Maki giggled. "Hungry, aren't you?"

The astronaut's cheeks reddened with a cute blush. "Yeah, busted... Man, I'm hungry! It sucks that I have to watch what I eat for my astronaut training! Gotta stick to fruits and stuff, I guess..."

The two lovers walked hand-in-hand. None of this had been planned, but it is just how life goes. You make plans, and they sometimes go off-track. But on every road you take, you meet new people and forge new memories.

Maki and Kaito wondered how the hell their date had gone so astray, but they would never get the answer to that question, and neither would they ever know everything there was to know about the Sohmas.

"Good thing I can still eat rice, right? A good rice ball sounds like it would hit the spot right now!"

Maki stopped and looked her boyfriend in the eyes, her own irises filled with a mix of amusement and frustration.

"You... do know that a rice ball doesn't belong in a fruits basket... right...?"

The End.

A.N: The second I first saw Haru and Rin when watching the anime, I immediately noticed their similarities with Maki and Kaito. I don't know if I'm the only one, but I really wanted to write a fic involving these four one day, and this prompt was the perfect opportunity. Anyway, I hope you liked this final entry!

I know the quality of my entries has gone down throughout this event, but a lack of time and motivation didn't help me. The fact that "only" two of my entries were late already impresses me, because I seriously thought at first it would be a lot more than that. Anyway, please leave a review, and I hope you all have a nice day!
