Temporal Cold War: Alien Bodies.

The Temporal Observatory protected the holographic image of the alien spaceships called imaginatively 'Unidentified Flying Objects,' or 'UFOs' by the people of the 20th century all around Noys. The illusion gave the time traveller the sensation she was hanging in space, and yet she was protected from the vacuum. It was an unsettling feeling of worry, but Noys did her best to ignore it. Fortunately, when she saw the alien ships, she focused on them and forgot about her problems.

There were three dozen alien ships approaching Earth, and their approach had already been picked up by SHADO's Space Intruder Detector satellites. Moonbase operated by SHADO were already mobilising and sending out the three interceptor craft to deal with the alien ships. The sight of the primitive space fighters with the single bulbous missile which was considered adequate in tackling the aliens in space made her shake her head in irritation; she didn't understand why the Earth of this world had not bothered to invest their time in training a full-on military group to place on the moon with more than one fighter or interceptor and make short work of the UFOs.

It was disappointing that the UN and Commander Straker and General Henderson didn't bother to anticipate the possibility they might need a much larger assault force to prevent the UFOs from coming through.

When she had first arrived in this reality, Noys had discovered the Earth of this universe was being attacked in secret by an alien race who killed human beings and stole their organs and tissues in order to survive. They travelled all the way from a distant star system to carry out missions like that, and the only things that circulated out to the rest of the human population were nothing but a rumour, and hearsay.

But investigators had found proof of alien activity and they had created an international organisation known as SHADO - Supreme Headquarters Alien Defence Organisation, a security bureau tasked with preventing the aliens from carrying out any more killings. For the most part, SHADO had succeeded after spending 10 years working to construct their bases on the moon and under a movie studio, of all things, and a fleet of submarines with a flying submarine mounted in the front to protect Earth.

Noys had only just become aware of this organisation's existence, but while she believed SHADO's purpose was a good one, SHADO was flawed in many ways. For instance, it was a mistake for them to rely on just three interceptor craft to meet the aliens. Another was they had no military support wherever they needed it. Noys had seen no signs of SHADO really needing such support, but the aliens were becoming increasingly desperate to break through the blockade SHADO was imposing on the solar system. They were sending more and more of their ships travelling at maximum warp into the Sol system, where SHADO would destroy them in space although it was becoming increasingly clear as she watched the SHADO interceptors meet the alien ships in the upcoming battle, that their reliance on a single missile was a weakness the aliens had found no trouble exploiting. It was hardly a mystery why the UFOs got lucky and were able to slip through.

And that was unacceptable. This might not be her Earth, but Noys Lambent had been born on the planet and although she had purposefully chosen the name of a character out of a novel with a forbidden love story behind it, to her the idea of any Earth being attacked in such a barbaric manner was disgusting and disturbing to her. Using the Temporal Observatory, Noys examined the alien flying saucers and she discovered something interesting even as she adjusted their courses while making it look like they were coming down under their own power. But she had another reason for taking such a step.

"They're coming down where?!" Commander Ed Straker, supreme commander of SHADO yelled.

"The UFOs are coming down in New York, London, Paris. They're heading for populated areas," Ford's head snapped up as he gazed at Straker in confused horror. Everyone gasped. The whole of SHADO was dedicated to stopping alien attacks and UFO incidents ever since they discovered what it was the aliens were doing, but the aliens were not usually this brazen. They preferred going after people in remote or isolated locations and by the time they'd left, there would be a mystery left behind. But they had never attacked a city before. They knew if they attacked it would reveal their existence to everyone, turning the entire planet against them.

Straker was silent but then he noticed something was wrong. The sounds of the computers and the chatter of personnel in a situation like this…were missing.

Straker cautiously looked around the control room, tapping people in the hopes of getting a reaction, but he got nothing in return. "Oh no, not again. This can't happen again," he whispered in horror as he remembered the traitor Turner, who had taken advantage of the time-bending effects a UFO imposed on SHADO to destroy their organisation.

"I assure you I am nothing like Turner, Commander," a smooth female voice spoke from behind him, and he found a young woman standing by the computers, wearing a dark blue jacket over black pants.

"Who the hell are you?"

The woman smirked. "My name is Noys Lambent. I am a time traveller."

Straker looked around his command centre. "I take it you're responsible for this?" He gestured around the room.

Noys followed his gesture and she nodded. "Yes. I froze them; don't worry, Commander. They'll come to no harm. I just wanted to speak to you without any interruption. I'm the reason why the UFOs are attacking the populated cities."

Straker glowered furiously at her.

"Why would you do that? Do you even realise what you've done?!" Straker demanded furiously as he witnessed the very thing SHADO had been trying to mitigate for years. "The moment those UFOs are seen in broad daylight, it will cause worldwide panic when they attack."

"Correct, Commander," Noys's smirk was smug. "But imagine the good that will come out of the whole thing. Y'know this is your fault, as was General Henderson, not to mention the entire UN Council. You should have built more of a defence force to stop the attacks."

"We believed they were adequate enough-!"

"No, they're not, Commander. Three interceptor fighters, three missiles against a dozen UFOs, as you call them, hardly a good enough fight. You've managed to hold the line through sheer dumb luck, mostly. But eventually, you're bound to lose. In fact, I daresay you will. I took control of the UFOs for two reasons; the first, to show the human race what is out there, to wake you up and to accelerate your growth so you are more powerful. When I took control of the UFOs, I shut down the device which makes the crafts explode should their life signs die," Noys sent him an amused look that seemed to mix pity and contempt with humour. "Did you not wonder why a spaceship from a distant planet seems to explode each time they're in the atmosphere of Earth? If they deteriorated in an atmosphere, then why would the aliens risk it? And why would they explode after the aliens your organisation have killed have died?"

"Have you been spying on us?" Straker demanded.

The look Noys sent him was one of pity and contempt mixed with annoyance. "Don't interrupt me, Commander. If I want, I can send you back in time so then you would be caught in the crossfire in a Roman or Spartan battle. And yes, answering your question. I have been spying on you. I needed to or I wouldn't have learnt so much. You military types love asking stupid questions, right?"

Straker seethed angrily at the insult.

"Second, part of my life is dedicated to the changing of history. Sooner or later, your efforts to hold the UFOs back from public knowledge wouldn't have worked for long. Sooner or later they would have been revealed. I've just accelerated the inevitable, turning a possibility into a certainty. If I were you, Commander, I would get your Skydivers to shoot the UFOs, but alert the militaries around the world. With luck, someone will shoot one down and you can discover more about their technologies. Good luck."

Noys vanished.

"No, wait. Come back!" Straker called.

"Commander, is everything alright?"

Straker blinked and he realised the time freeze was over and he cursed the time traveller angrily for this humiliating moment. "There was someone similar to Turner here," he decided to explain so then everyone didn't call him a lunatic. "She froze you all and spoke to me."

"What did she say?" Colonel Lake asked.

Straker sighed. "She said to me that she had taken control of the UFOs and sent them to Earth and she shut down the device which causes the UFOs to deteriorate."

"A device?" Ford echoed. "You mean those things aren't designed badly? We've been combating a safety device this whole time?"

Usually, Straker wouldn't allow a debate during an attack, but the situation called for it. "Seems so. Check the UFOs now, Anderson, and Ford, I want to know if we can stop them, or if the military around the world can do something. Contact all Skydivers."

As everyone got to work, Straker wondered if they could stop the UFOs before anyone else saw them, but too many UFOs had come into the atmosphere and he wasn't sure if they even had a chance of the Skydivers stopping them. But, deep down, Straker wondered if this was actually a benefit or not. Security took up a vast part of SHADO's nature, and it was to prevent normal people from discovering the existence of aliens and what they were doing, but something told him their secrecy was going to be over. But if they could shoot down a UFO then they could discover a lot about the aliens' science and technology instead of relying on scraps.
