Return of Venom
"Venom," Peter whispered in dread in the conference room of the Stark Enterprise building where he, Debra, and Doc Connors had been watching a demonstration of an extra-dimensional portal being opened. The science of it staggered him, and Peter wondered if Tony Stark had discovered something, some piece of alien technology that had helped him build it in the first place or if he had done it with his own genius, but anyone who could invent half of the things Stark could create was a genius. Doc Connors was right though, and as he had seen the way the inter-dimensional technology worked, Peter had wondered if they could finally break the light barrier with this technology without needing to wait for a few centuries living in their own solar system, but if they could finally crack time travel.
But as he had told Debra before the demonstration, something else could come through the portal from some other dimension, some monster which had been banished into the extra-dimensional realm. Humanity would be lucky to survive such an attack. The sight of Baron Mordo didn't fill him with confidence; he knew enough of the priest to Dormammu to know this project had attracted him.
And just like that, his worst nightmare was confirmed.
Something nasty was going to come through, and Dormammu had been the top of his life, but while Debra and Curt Connors were both blinded by scientific discovery, Peter knew a few years back before the spider bit him, he would have likely felt the same way.
But thanks to his time as Spider-Man, Peter had found it was best to be more pragmatic when it came to scientific discoveries. He had instantly known the Tablet of Time was going to be nothing but trouble, especially when Hammerhead instantly tried to steal it, and when Silvermane tried to use its properties to rejuvenate himself and he regressed to the age of a baby again.
When the demonstration went wrong, the last enemy Peter had experienced appeared.
Venom.
The sight of Venom as he swung into the grounds of the Stark building sent a chill into his heart as he counted the fangs in his mouth. How could this be? The last time he had seen the Venom symbiont was during that mess when Eddie Brock had bonded to the same alien creature which had assumed its role as his costume, and driven him to the brink of insanity as it consumed his more violent side; if he hadn't used the sound of the bells ringing then the alien would have succeeded, and it had latched onto the increasingly angry Eddie Brock, who had come to the church to cause problems. Brock was obsessed with getting revenge on Spider-Man because Peter had stopped him from ruining Connor's life, but because Brock had faked those pictures which showed Peter hadn't stolen the Prometheum X off of the space shuttle, everyone had gunned for Spider-Man until Peter discovered the truth and exposed Brock in front of Jameson.
And since then Brock, with typical tunnel vision, had blamed Spider-Man and not himself. In the state he had been in when the alien had been bonded to him, Peter had actually looked forward to beating Brock to a pulp. And he would have done it if he hadn't gotten control over himself and used the bells to get the symbiont off of him. But the alien had bonded with Brock, and they mutually came after him to get revenge. As Venom, Brock and the alien had stalked Peter; the creature had given Brock everything, every scrap of knowledge of who Spider-Man really was, making him more deadly than any of his enemies.
Doctor Octopus. Scorpion. Rhino. Shocker, even Green Goblin and Hobgoblin, and Mysterio…. They were deadly in themselves, but Venom was in entirely a different league to Kingpin. Venom knew precisely who he was under the mask. Venom knew how he felt about Mary Jame. Venom knew why he had become Spider-Man, the entire story of what happened to Uncle Ben and his worries about Aunt May, but luckily for Peter, even Eddie Brock had scruples despite occasionally talking about them, but he hadn't gone after them.…and even if Venom had gone for them, Peter wasn't sure if he could have defeated Venom at all.
It had been a nightmare fighting him off; the alien symbiont had been augmenting Peter's powers, enhancing his strength and stamina until he had the power to throw himself over a building and lift up a fire truck, and had an inexhaustible supply of organic webbing. Even worse, the symbiont's connection to him had made it immune to his spider-sense, so Venom could do what he wanted and Peter wouldn't have any way of stopping him or even realising he was there until it was too late. Venom also had knowledge of his tactics, so the creature had no problem anticipating or guessing what he would do.
But how was it possible for Venom to come back? Unlike most of his other enemies who would have no problems with escaping prison or otherwise went into hiding to lick their wounds, Spider-Man had used the sound of a rocket that would take a probe deep into space to separate the symbiont from Brock, and he had webbed the alien creature to the rocket for takeoff. Spider-man had left Brock behind for the authorities to find and he was sent to prison for psychiatric assessment last he'd heard, but Peter had written him off as a threat since without the symbiont, Brock wasn't a danger. And besides, with the fanatical way he went on about how Spider-Man wrecked his life and blamed others for his problems, he was going to be locked in there for a long time.
But why was Venom here? Peter left quickly to change into Spider-Man; he didn't know enough about what was happening, but the presence of Mordo here was hardly a coincidence. There was a mystery here, and while he enjoyed them, he didn't relish them. He just hoped fighting Venom would be easy; it had been a long time since he had fought the creature, and as he left the auditorium, he couldn't see anything that he could use to make a loud enough noise to disorientate the symbiont, but Venom learnt from their mistakes and would likely be tougher to fight than ever before.
