Sick Of It

"Hey, Mike?" Lucas' voice rings through Mike's ears.

Mike and Ashlyn were staying at Lucas' dorm as they didn't have any place to stay at. Noticing this, Lucas suggested that it would be okay with him if they would stay at his place as there were extra rooms too. Mike agreed but his girlfriend wasn't for the same idea as she thought that she and Mike wouldn't be having some 'privacy'. But of course, she had to respect her boyfriend's decision so she agreed too.

"Yeah?" Mike responds, eyes still glued to his phone, scrolling through something like obsessed. "Why did you leave Hawkins?"

-"Huh?" The question takes him out by surprise. He puts his phone on the mattress, turning his head to his best friend.

Lucas sighs and adjusts himself back on the bed, facing Mike. "Past two years... they have been miserable without you, man." He pauses before continuing. "Everybody here missed you a lot."

Mike nods, listening to him carefully.

"I know- you decided to leave everything behind -but still... I wanted to ask...what was the actual reason behind it?"

Well, it was obvious to Lucas that Mike would have left the town because of El as the party knew the incident happened at that party, two years ago. And Mike was just a coward like that who didn't face the situation El was in and left Hawkins.

But still, Lucas wanted to make his best friend spill his guts out.

"You already know, Lucas," Mike shrugs. "-nana ran out of the oxygen tank and it was an emergency-"

"No." Lucas' voice cuts him off. "It was just an excuse."If it would have been real, you would have come back to Hawkins. To your girlfriend. But instead, you stayed there."

"N-no, that's not true." His words were hesitant as he knew that it was a blatant lie.

"It was because of El, right?" Now, those were the words that caught Mike's full attention. His eyes went wide at the sound of his words.

Well, technically, it's a yes. She was the cause of everything that was happening in the present.

He wanted to tell everyone the reason behind all of this, the reason behind his heartbreak; why his friends looked so distant from him; why he became so distant from them. But just talking about that topic, that night, makes him feel nauseous in some way.

And he was so sick of it! So sick of hiding his feelings in his heart!

He just wanted to get rid of this. He wanted to take a break from feeling so broken. So helpless. So tired. In any way possible.

And maybe, somehow, the plan of making the girl, that broke his heart into million pieces, feel the same way she made him feel, could bring him some satisfaction?

Noticing his silence, Lucas sighed defeated, and decided not to ask any further. If his best friend wants time, he'll give it. He walked up to the boy and put a hand on his shoulder. "I won't push you to tell me about it. But if you ever, ever want to discuss it, I'm always here, okay?"

Mike just stared at him blankly, still feeling to open up about everything but then thinks that it isn't a good time. "One day, I will."

Lucas nods and walks away.

Mike can't resist this feeling anymore. Enough of allowing his brain to hurt his heart again and again. Now, his brain will hurt the person, who was actually worthy of hurting.

And it will start tomorrow.

"Hey, Max?" El's nervous voice comes as she sees the redhead's eyes focused on the Wonder Woman comic in her hands. "Yeah?"

"Do you..." She fidgets with her fingers before trailing off, "-still think that I should go tomorrow? To the party -I mean?" Max raises a brow and looks to her side, "Girl, what are you up to? How many times will you bring this up again? If you don't want to you can just stay at home." El shakes her head, "No-no I'm just-"

"El, there's no one pushing you to come to the party," Max says. "It's all up to your choice."

"Yeah, I know," El bits her bottom lip in nervousness. "I'm just nervous you know? It's been two years since that incident at the party and I'm- I'm not used to it."

These thoughts are constantly haunting her mind since she agreed to go to the party and overcome her fears. She thought that she was brave and all at the sound of Max's encouraging words but now, looking into the present, here she is, panicking and allowing her insecurities to kill her just before the day of Lucas' birthday.

And by this, she accepted that as much as words sound brave and badass, doing it in real life is the opposite.

She also tried to avoid these thoughts to enter her mind over the past few days as she really wanted to move on from her past but she was failing miserably again and again.

'What if something bad happens there?'

'What if the bad memories come again?'

'What if she ends up being stupid again?'

So many 'what ifs'!

"Ellll! Heyyy?" Max shakes her hand in front of the brunette's voice to wake her up from her usual habit of thinking too much. "Huh? What?" El blinks and looks at the redhead. "I was saying that if you don't feel at your ease and still want to go there, I could be with you the entire time."

El furrows her eyebrows. No, not this shit again. "Max, you can't just ruin your time being whole time with me! You also have your life to enjoy!"

"Yeah, but I love babying you too." The redhead pouts. El throws her head back in annoyance. "God, this is so bad!"

"Hey, don't you like me being your mom?!" Max slightly hits El's leg, pretending to be hurt. "Oh, El! I'm so huuuuurt!"

El laughs at her best friend's fake drama. "No, but seriously, tomorrow is your boyfriend's birthday and I want you to enjoy it. Not ruining it in babying me." Max sighs. "Then Dustin could baby you! I'm sure he'll like it!"

"Or- I could just sit there and wait till Lucas cuts the cake, then give him the gift, happy wishes and go home." The brunette shrugs. "Simple."

"Oh my god, you're so boring." The redhead groans before straightening her posture to look at her best friend better, "But if someone bothers you there and you want me to kick his balls, just call me right away."

"Um thank you I guess..." El raises a brow. " But I'm pretty sure that I have knees and feet too." Max just rolls his eyes. "Yeah, yeah, okay. Now, go to sleep, tomorrow is a long day."

"'Kay," El replies before laying down on the blue mattress and turning to the side. 'Yes, as Max said, all my friends would be there with me. Nothing could go wrong.'

She nods in approval, shutting her eyes.

But, definitely, the curly-haired boy was planning his best to prove her wrong and make her life go downhill again...
