Vergil found the contents of the Chapter Black tape most enlightening. Although it made it obvious that man-made calamities were devastating beyond belief, none of the atrocities on the tape had any comparison to the might of demonic power. Demonic Kings such as Mundus and Argosax had the power to create such destruction and calamity with a wave of their hand, while Humans had to learn through thousands of years of technological innovation.
"This tape is interesting, but it only proves my point," Vergil mused, handing the tape back to Sensui after he finished it. "It seems as though despite humanity's penchant for destruction, they still have only a fraction of the destructive power that demons have attained throughout their millenia of existence."
"You may be correct," Sensui conceded, "But that fraction of power can create massive amounts of destruction. Atrocities such as Hiroshima and the Holocaust may not hold a candle to what demons could do if they took over the Human Realm, but, even then, the fact that humanity has the potential for such destruction is what makes it dangerous."
"So your plan is to have demons kill what's left of humanity before it can destroy itself?" Vergil asked.
"Exactly. Eradicating that potential is the most merciful fate I can think of for the Human Race."
Vergil knew firsthand the destructive power of demons. After all, it was what killed his mother and separated him from his brother. That sort of might was what he sought, what he had fought and bled for with all his effort. Without it, he would have no way to protect himself, let alone anyone he let close to him. He would forever be the little boy on that fateful day more than a decade ago: alone and unprotected, with his life torn into bloody tatters around him as demons ravaged his home.
But, even then, would he wish the full might of his demonic power on innocents? To an extent, he understood where Sensui came from. One had to sacrifice pawns for the sake of the greater cause. He knew this, and was prepared to sacrifice as many as it took for him to gain the power of Sparda.
Yet, if Sensui's plan worked as he intended, many more would end up in Vergil's place, back on that fateful day? How much more destruction would those beings attempt to wreak in the name of vengeance? What power would they attain in their quests? And, worst of all, would Vergil be able to stop them if they blamed him for the deaths of their loved ones, due to his involvement?
They could try, he thought. When the barrier between realms was truly destroyed with the rise of the Temen-ni-Gru, he would finally be able to attain the power he needed to eviscerate any challenger like the insignificant ants they were. And wasn't that what mattered most? A demon wouldn't care about the cost of their conquests, and neither would he.
Even then, Sensui's reasoning was foolish and misguided at best, and Vergil relished in informing him of just how idiotic he was.
"But wouldn't that only create more destruction?" he eventually asked. "The eradication of the human race at the hands of demons would only create more bloodshed and further atrocities. Is that what you want?"
Sensui just chuckled.
"Even then, it's better that demons eradicate humanity now, before it teaches itself to. After all, isn't it better to remember something fondly after bygone days than to watch it decay into something beyond recognition?"
Vergil glared. Arkham wished for him to cooperate with this fool? Then he would cooperate. But he would not let Sensui believe that he was the superior being.
"Your reasoning is flawed at best, Shinobu Sensui."
Sensui gave him a serene smile, as if he was lecturing a small child.
"And yours isn't? You seek the power of your father, the legendary demon knight Sparda, but you completely misunderstand his motivations. Was he not the demon who separated the two realms? If you seek his power so badly, then why are you working to undo his deeds?"
Vergil pulled out the Yamato, and pointed it at Sensui's throat.
"Know that the only reason I've spared you today is because our goal of merging the two worlds is aligned, madman."
Sensui smiled.
"Oh, I know that very well. But, you should know that death, at this point, doesn't scare me. My death is inevitable. However…"
His thin lipped grin suddenly took on an eerie quality, and Vergil was starkly reminded of his interactions with Arkham.
"…Whether or not I drag you to Hell with me is up for debate, son of Sparda."
Vergil growled, and sheathed his blade.
"Then I shall meet you there with open arms." he snarled, and stormed off, before tossing the tape back to Sensui.
Sensui caught it.
"Keep your tape," Vergil said, "Nothing on it is of use to me."
And then, he left Sensui to stew until he sought him out, once again. Once he was done with him, he would be dead and forgotten, his foolish plans but failed relics of the past.
And Sensui's spirit would regret ever crossing a Son of Sparda.
In between following Sensui's frankly ridiculous and far-off leads for the forgotten name, Vergil observed Sensui's operation. From what he could tell, it seemed to be a joint operation between Sensui and a demon named Itsuki, who happened to be his demonic partner from back when he worked as an operative for the Spirit World.
After the initial opening of the barrier, certain citizens of Mushiyori City rapidly awakened spiritual powers, which was what Sensui seemed to have been hoping for. Of course, in Vergil's opinion, an army of mid-level demons would have been better suited to the task, but he could appreciate the poetic irony of a group of humans leading to the downfall of the human race.
The psychics stared at him openly, the foreigner with the strange coat and the dangerous aura, and he relished in their fear at his might. At least, most of them feared him. The one nicknamed Sniper glared at him openly in an attempt to challenge him. Vergil welcomed him to it, but the man was too loyal to attack him without an express order from Sensui.
Vergil aided them in their endeavors, and relished in the smell of brimstone and sulfur that had started to perforate the air near the ever-expanding portal. The smell of his father's homeland. Of what would soon become his homeland.
And then, one fateful day, Sensui went too far.
At this point in the story, Sensui could nerf Vergil in one blow. Does Vergil know this? No. He thinks he's got the upper hand, but, to be fair, he has an ego problem.
Anyway, I am debating on whether to make this a fix-it fic for DMC or end it tragically. It's up to you, dear readers (if you are even there)
