Chapter 2: You aren't alone anymore.

It had been a little over a day since Amber Lavel had brought the mysterious girl to the temple of Dreorna and she was sitting at the table of her house thinking to herself about the events of yesterday.

"Why did the Order of Shadows Come all the way here to do a summoning ritual? Were they even aware of the power of the girl they pulled into this world? They couldn't have, right?" Meral thought to herself, but was caught off by a muffled beeping from her scroll. She pulled it out of her pocket and answered. "Greetings High Priest Cobalt, what can I do for you?" She asked politely.

"Thank you for answering my call Lady Lavel, I would like to request your presence in my office at the temple, I have some things I need to talk with you about." Cobalt said, his voice was calming, and warm like the fire from a chimney.
"Yes sir, I'm on my way.

A little while later

High Priest Cobalt's office wasn't too big or grand, the black stone that dominated the city's architecture was present even here, where the light of a fireplace was sucked into the walls, and spread out as warmth. A modest office desk sat in the middle of the room, with two spruce chairs sat on both sites, with High Priest Cobalt sitting behind the desk, his Azure eyes seemed to glow in the firelight.

"Thank you for coming, Lady Lavel, like I said before, I have some important things that I need to talk to you about, that being your last mission and the girl you brought here." Cobalt explained

"Were you able to get rid of the curses?" Amber asked, hoping for the answer to be yes, though the priest's face grew sorrowful.

"Sadly no, which brings me to what I called you here for. I would like you to take care of her, teach her about our world, and defend her with your life, we absolutely do not want her to wind up in the hands of the Order of Shadows, or any other cult for that matter." Cobalt explained

"Are you saying you want me to adopt her" Amber asked

"Basically yes. Will you accept?"

Amber took a minute to think, the idea of adopting the mysterious girl did sound like a nice idea to her, she was never given a chance to be raised by a loving family, she was an orphan, and she always did want to have the chance to give a child a family that she wished she had.

"It would be my honor to adopt her, sir!" Amber announced to the priest.

"Excellent! let's go see her then shall we? She should be awake any time now.." Cobalt said smiling as he got up from his chair, amber soon followed and they started walking towards the medical wing of the temple.

Maple awoke in a small black stone room that reminded her of a recovery room at a hospital, she looked around to see what she could only assume to be a nurse, wearing a white robe that looked like it had a coat underneath, even though the room felt fine to her. Noticing maple was awake she stopped what she was doing and looked at Maple.

"Good morning child, how are you feeling? Is the temperature alright? And can I get your name?" The nurse asked in a caring tone.

"Yeah, My name's Maple, I feel fine, and the temperature is good. What happened to me, and why are you wearing a coat under your outfit?" Maple asked, her sleepiness clear in her voice. "Well, according to the report you were summoned here from another world and were subjected to some nasty high-power curses, I'm in this coat because we had to chill the room to sub zero temperatures to prevent you from overheating." The nurse explained with an empathetic expression.

Maple immediately grew more awake hearing that. "Wha-What are the curses that were placed on me?" Maple asked, a feeling of dread washing over her.

"Well, the first curse is one that increased your base body temperature, causing you to need to be in a cold environment in order to survive, thankfully the island we're on right now is cold enough year round to support that, though if you want to go anywhere else you'll have to get your armor to a dust smith to get temperature regulating dust runes placed on it. The second curse will make you depend on drinking blood to stay in control, I'm truly sorry, but if it makes you feel better we will supply you with blood that people donated." The nurse explained solemnly.

Maple paled, well paled as much as her already snow white skin could pale, and she felt the world spin. She looked down on herself, finding that she was wearing the red and black armor her in-game avatar wore, she immediately opened her menu, only to find no logout button, and no contact devs button. She was trapped in this world, she couldn't even log out to be with her family or IRL friends, and she couldn't even go back to NWO and be with her online friends. Sally, Kanade, Kazumi, Kuromu, Iz, Mai, Yui, she may never be able to see any of them again. Not only that but she now had to drink blood to stay sane and was basically trapped on this island. Maple began to cry into her hands, feeling a great sense of loss. The nurse looked sadly at the girl before walking out of the room and into a makeshift airlock to give Maple some time to process what happened.

Outside, High Priest Cobalt and Amber were approaching the door just as the nurse exited the makeshift airlock. "Greetings High Priest Cobalt and Lady Lavel, I'm sorry to say but I don't think it's a good time to visit the patient right now." The nurse informed giving a bow, a note of sorrow entering her voice as she spoke.

"Why? What's wrong?" Amber asked, concerned.

"Well, when I broke the news to her when she asked what had happened, she did not take it well. The poor girl started crying almost as soon as I finished explaining it to her." The nurse explained to the two.

"I see, maybe we should come back some other time then?" Cobalt said, a little disappointed at not being able to check up on the girl just yet.

"May I try to comfort her?" Amber asked the nurse.

"You can try, but I'm not sure how well it will go." the Nurse replied. And with that Amber headed through the airlock.

Maple cried, mourning the loss of everything she had when suddenly she felt a pair of arms wrap around her, and an additional weight on the bed she sat in.

"Shhh, everything's going to be okay" a melodious voice soothed. Maple turned to see who said that to see a woman with long brown hair and amber eyes smiling at her. The woman wore silvery-black armor that had strange runes that glowed white engraved on it, along with an amulet which held an eye shaped ruby. "You aren't alone anymore." The lady said soothingly. Maple Returned the hug and cried into the woman's shoulder. Meanwhile High Priest Cobalt and the nurse stood off to the side, and Cobalt smiled. He was right to pick Lady Lavel to take care of the girl.

The next day Amber and Maple went shopping for everything maple was going to need, food, clothes, various hygiene products, a mini fridge, and they picked up some blood packs, after which they drove home. Amber's house was a modestly sized wooden house that sat on a hill overlooking the city, which maple noticed had a very gothic feel to it.

"So, what's the name of the island we're on? " Maple asked curiously.

"This is Grimrock Island, named for the fact that it's shaped like a beowulf skull." Amber explained as she started to pull bags out of the car.

"What's a beowulf?" Maple asked intrigued.

"They are one of many variants of the creatures of Grimm, dark creatures that kill humans and faunus and feast on our negative emotions. They are often used as tools of destruction by those who seek the end of us all, and before you ask, Faunus are basically the same as us humans, but with some extra animal parts and instincts that aid them in their lives." Amber explained, Maple picked some bags out of the car to help bring them into the house.

"Why would anyone want to seek the end of everyone though?" Maple asked innocently.

"Some people think this world has nothing worth sparing. Let's leave that for another time though, I'll take those bags, why don't you make yourself at home?" Amber suggested. Maple nodded, handing Amber the bags and holding the door open for her to enter before entering the house. As Amber put everything away Maple started to explore her new home. It was rather tidy. Right by the front door the Kitchen and living room were connected, a TV sat by the wall with a coffee table and couch facing it. To the left there was a hallway that led to a couple of bedrooms, one which showed signs of being occupied, and the other had a bed that looks like it never got used, but has been there for a long time, as well as a wardrobe and closet. There wasn't much decorating the house though. After everything was packed and Maple had gotten herself settled in, the two ate and headed to bed.
