Hermione was awoken by a crack of thunder reverberating throughout the tent. She could hear the wind howling outside, imitating the storm she felt inside. She rolled over to check how long she had been asleep. 5 hours. She got up and did a few things around the tent. After she felt awake enough, she put on her jacket to go out and check on Harry.
Things had been a little tense between them since Godric's Hollow. They were lucky to have escaped with their lives. However, she knew he was devastated about his broken wand. She figured she would relieve him early so he could get some extra rest. The visions hadn't allowed him to get any decent sleep the other night.
She peeled back the tent flap and stepped into the frigid cold. It had started snowing while she was asleep. A couple of inches of fresh snow had added to the snow still on the ground from the last storm. Despite it being windy, visibility was still okay. She scanned the area outside the tent where she expected Harry to be but didn't see him. She walked around the tent searching, blinking snowflakes out of her eyes. Figuring he was walking to stretch his legs, she did the same. She walked the perimeter of the protected area but saw no sign of him.
Harry was nowhere to be found.
While Hermione felt herself begin to panic, she tried to reassure herself that he was probably fine. He had the wand after all and probably mistakenly walked outside of the enchanted area. She resisted the urge to leave camp. She was useless at the moment unarmed. She paced around for a while before heading back to the tent. Stepping inside, she could feel the cold as her body slowly tried to warm itself.
What if he left too?
She only let the thought linger for a few seconds before pushing it away but it kept creeping back. Hermione could feel her heartbeat racing and decided to search for his things to find her answer. She held her breath, unsure if she was ready to know. A wave of relief flooded over her as she realized most of his stuff was still in the tent where he had left it.
Okay, see? It's fine. I'm sure he'll be back soon.
She tried to be patient but found herself pacing around, unsure of what to do in the meantime. She didn't like sitting around and waiting. What if something had happened? Maybe she should go search for him. But what if he comes back while she is gone? She let her mind debate itself for a few minutes before forcing a decision. Grabbing the nearest scrap of paper she could find, she scribbled a note to leave on the table in case he returned first.
She went to throw on a beanie and an extra scarf and headed outside. The snow had started falling at a good rate now. She decided to search for him before she lost visibility. Trying to not think about the possibility of something terrible having happened to him, she put on a determined face and trudged off in the snow.
