CHAPTER 1: AN OFFER CHARLIE BROWN CAN'T AND WON'T REFUSE!
Three months earlier…
The school bell rang, and the kids were getting out. Summer vacation had begun. All the kids were discussing what they would be doing all summer. Charlie Brown and his friends were walking down the sidewalk talking about their summer plans.
"I plan on playing my piano and learning new sonatas from Beethoven," said Schroeder.
"And I'll be joining you for that, my darling," cooed Lucy. Schroeder just rolled his eyes, knowing she was right.
"Well, we're going to the lake in July," said Violet. "We have a summer cottage out there."
"Will I be able to join you?" asked Patty, her best friend.
"Without question!" Violet replied, to which Patty squealed with excitement.
"What do YOU have planned, Charlie Brown?" asked Lucy with a sly smirk.
"Well, this summer we actually may take a break from baseball this time," said Charlie Brown, shocking most of the kids.
"You actually mean it, Charlie Brown?!" asked Violet, getting excited about not having to worry about losing another game for once.
"No having to suffer through losses, for once?!" added Patty.
"Nope," said Charlie Brown, smiling. "For once, we're taking a break from baseball."
"So, we get to do other things besides baseball this summer," said Pig Pen.
"I won't have to worry about wearing a baseball cap and messing up my naturally curly hair," said a happy Frieda.
"I have more time for my piano," said Schroeder.
"Hold on a moment," said Lucy. "As happy as I am about you not having us suffer through another losing season, why aren't we playing this year?"
"I thought Linus would have told you," said Charlie Brown.
"Tell me what?" said Lucy, glaring at her younger brother.
"Well, Charlie Brown and I are going to his grandparents summer cottage in Virginia on the ocean," said Linus. "He invited me months ago, and mom and dad said it was okay for me to go."
"Why didn't you invite ME, Charlie Brown?!" snapped Lucy.
"Well, I could only invite a couple of people," said Charlie Brown. "Snoopy is going with me, of course, and Linus was my other choice."
"No day at the ocean for you, Lucy!" laughed Schroeder.
"Well, I do hope you have a good time, Charlie Brown and Linus," said Pig Pen.
"Bring back some souvenirs," added Frieda.
"If you find some good music places, let me know if I come out that way one day," said Schroeder. And everyone talked about Charlie Brown and Linus's trip to Charlie's grandparents cottage, as well as everyone else's summer plans. It was going to be a good summer for all.
