In a small prefecture in Ofuku, Japan, stood a tiny run down apartment complex. Forgotten by the city jurisdiction and the majority of it's surrounding prefects, the apartment awaited demolition.

For a teenage girl-

Chisato Shino-

That apartment complex was the last thing she saw.

This is the story of how she died.

One cold winter's night, set among the background of a tiny town in Ofuku, Japan, stood a lone girl. Her teeth chattered with the biting cold winds, the scarf she wore barely aiding in retaining body heat. A school girl uniform wasn't very much in the way of warmth. Chisato Shino swiped away her tears and pulled from her skirt pocket an old relic of a mobile phone. A tiny cherry blossom key chain dangled from it almost like a life line.

[Ring ring]

"Moshi moshi?"

Her boyfriend Fuma answered. Chisato choked back a sob and said, "Fuma-kun! I-I've been kicked out of the apartment."

"Eh? Really?"

Fuma and Chisato had been dating for three weeks. The two had a typical school life romance; Fuma confessing and Chisato accepting his feelings. Thus they had began to grow closer. The two were the talk of the co-ed school, with students gossiping that they'd slept together. Of course that wasn't true-kids could be cruel.

Kids...

Could be cruel.

"Come to the station. I'll meet you there." Fuma said.

"Y-yes! I'll come right now."

Shinjuku station was busy this time of year. Tourists and family gatherings were rampant, and Chisato weaved around masked strangers and dodged shoulders left and right. Finally she made it to station 4-D, and stood breathlessly waiting for Fuma to show.

Fuma walked into existence amid the milling people. He wore a black school uniform, open in the front, with stylish hair parted in the middle. Fuma jogged over to Chisato. "Chisato-chan. What happened?"

The girl fumbled with her words but began explaining. "Oto-san was drinking again. He...he tried to...uhm-" she shook away the memory of sexual assault and swallowed a lump, "-ah-well, I...I was disobedient...and Oto-san told me to leave, you see. So I...So I don't have a home now..!"

At last she'd told the tale. Chisato began sniffling and wiped her tears on the sleeve of her blazer.

Fuma hummed and hawed but scratched his dark hair. "Well...that old man...! Come on, let's get you of the cold."

Chisato was led the way to Fuma's family home. It was traditional in design, medium sized, and well groomed. Snow dotted the roof and sakura trees around it. Fuma opened the gate and the two walked towards his home.

"I'm home," Fuma said.

His mother walked over. She was plump and her features were hidden behind cheek fat. Still, the woman had a beautiful smile. "Oh! Fuma-kun, you've brought a friend. What is her name?"

Chisato bowed and answered: "I-I'm Fuma-kun's girlfriend. Please take care of me!"

"Oh! Oh my! Fuma-kun, you've went and got such a polite girl!" She walked over and gave Chisato a look over. "My, what shiny hair she has. Well, are you hungry dear?"

"No ma'am! But thank you ma'am!"

Fuma sighed. "Oka-san, please, don't pester her. She's been through a lot. Her dad kicked her out today."

The mother gasped. "Is that true? Really? How terrible! What happened?"

Chisato relayed what happened to Fuma's mother, wishing she didn't have to explain anything. It was a horrible experience for the girl to relive after all. When she was finished talking, his mother shook her head. "My word...! I shouldn't speak so poorly of people, but he sounds like...like a total konoyaro!"

The girl named Chisato spent the night there in the guest room of her boyfriend Fuma's home.

Her situation with her father had been bad before, but she hadn't had someone to rely on then.

Still...

Kids can be cruel.

One week had passed. Chisato went to school as normal. Things were...normal.

Fuma changed, however.

His once kind smiles turned into smirks-

The sweet words he told Chisato became insults-

Worse of all-

The absolute worst-

Fuma became someone she'd relied on, depended upon to get through troubled times. Chisato had no idea that the depths inside his dark eyes were full of venom. A snake laying in wait for his prey.

Chisato heard whispers...rumors about her home life in school. It wasn't long as she became the object of ridicule. Letters from 'dad' where shoved into her shoe locker, notes taped to her book bag-

Not knowing it was all Fumas doing.

It only grew worse.

Kids can be cruel.

Once winter evening just beyond the edge of darkness, when the moon had been hung brightly and the air was crisp and sharpened, Chisato came across Fuma.

He wasn't alone.

A beautiful girl, the school's idol, was lip locking him on a public bench. Chisato stopped and dashed over to be sure it was indeed her boyfriend. "F-Fuma-kun...? W-What's going on?"

Fuma smirked cruelly up at her with a twisted gleam in his dark eyes. "Ah, Chisato...meet my girlfriend Uma."

Uma giggled and began sucking his face again. Chisato backed away- it wasn't true, it couldn't be real. Fuma was pulling some sort of prank on her.

Uma looked so much better in his arms than she. Where Chisato was plain and average with only shiny hair to differentiate her from others, Uma had remarkable features that were worthy of glossy pages.

"Fuma-kun..." Chisato cried and ran away feeling like a fool.

Just like kids can be cruel,

Adults can be truly cruel.

She went home that night only to be thoroughly abused. Chisato fled from the apartment complex, running blindly until reaching Shinjuku station. There she spent the last of her saved up money from odd jobs and such to take a train Tokyo.

The streets of that towering city of lights couldn't wash away her worries however. The girl wanted something to take away her pain-something to ease the heartache inside.

Anything would do.

"Why am I even alive?" She whispered to the air.

There wasn't an answer.

She walked on through main street, passing by store after store until an elderly man with a cane caught her attention. "Psst!"

"Hm?"

Chisato walked over.

He urged her forward with his cane. "Hey hey little lady, are you looking for a good time?"

"EH? N-no!" She turned but he grabbed her hand. "Kya!"

He placed something large in it. She looked down and spied what appeared to be a dvd case. There was no markings to say what it was supposed to be. "Ano, what is this?" She asked politely.

"Ehh, it's a game, a game! Try it! Just remember to save your progress." He nodded like it was fact. "Hur hur, there's a gaming tower there! Go!"

"S-Sure." She glanced down at her game in wonder. It was unexpected to be given something instead of it being taken away. Chisato glanced back up but the old man was gone. "Eh? Ano, sir? Sir?"

The girl smiled. Maybe this would help? Could it? Would it?

Chisato looked up at the large tower. She'd never been to one before and was intimated. After going inside it however she found it welcoming. A lady greeted her at the door and told her where to go-the 4th floor. "Hai hai. Arigatou!"

The fourth floor was populated with Otaku's. Chisato walked in feeling strange and out of place until she realized nobody there gave a damn in the least about her being there. They were too preoccupied with getting the highest scores.

I might as well try it since I'm here, she thought.

It was easy to pop in the game and load it's contents.

[Character Creation]

"So it's one of these types." She saw it was based on a show called Dragon Ball. Of course one had to live under a rock not to know that name. Even a poor gal like her had saw it a time or two. Chisato began creating her character.

[Saiyan]

[Female]

[Name:]

"Name...Ano, how about...Rhuda?"

[Name: Rhuda]

[Fighting Preference: Up and Close, Far away, A little of Both]

Chisato paused to think that one over. Should her character be like her? If so, she should pick Far Away. But the girl chose Up and Close. "I want to be...someone else, after all," she admitted.

[Fighting Preference: Up and Close]

[Personality: Loud, Quiet, Smart...]

The list went on.

Chisato carefully selected characteristics that were in direct polar opposites to her real world self. As such, she chose...

[Personality: Loud, Rude, Strict, Cold Shoulder, Argumentive]

"That's about as different as it could be," she said to herself.

She continued to create her character, growing bored at all the selections. It was getting repetitive to keep picking things so she began choosing at random. The game kept on...

Chisato ended up choosing quite a few things, such as a background as [Broly's Sister] and [Heroine]

[Romance On/Off]

"Romance? Eh? Uhmm...

[Romance On]

[Game Setting Save? Yes/No]

[Game...s..]

"Mr. Game?" She smacked the keyboard but nothing happened. "It's frozen..."

Chisato looked for help but there wasn't anyone attending to assist. She sighed in defeat. I suppose that's that, then..

The girl left her game running. She didn't see that it eventually went on without her.

Chisato made it home extremely late that night. She made sure to be extra quiet so as not to disturb her douche of a dad. He was snoring with only boxers and body hair on the couch as she passed, a beer slipping from his lazy hand. Chisato shook her head in disgust and walked up to the rooftop.

The rooftop was bitterly cold. Kind of like how she felt.

"As I thought...I shouldn't be here," she said.

Above her the skies twinkled brightly. Chisato held up her bruised hand to the night sky and tried to catch a star between her pinched index and thumb. "If I had one of those I could leave this place.."

The girl was remarkably resilient to the woes of life all around her. Despite that she was still only a teenage girl with teenage emotions. Emotions that were now opening up and threatening to choke away the last bits of sanity she had left. "Mom...where are you? Why am I here alone?"

Again she tried to grasp at the sky. "I'm sorry that I...I'm worthless after all. I wish that I was somewhere else."

"Hic...hic...please, take me away from here! I don't care where!"

She spied the edge of the apartment and looked over it daringly. Of course she was merely being theatrical since she was alone and allowed to have a meltdown. Chisato took a deep breath and leaned forward. "It would be so easy, wouldn't it. To end my life. Why don't I? Why do I bother?"

Her footing slipped on the snows cushioning and caused Chisato to slide off the edge.

It was useless to flail around but she still did so, screaming as she fell down to die.

The world can be cruel.
