In the kingdom of Naboo, there was an evil queen by the name of Grayolanda Morphina. But, most simply referred to her as Queen Morpha. She was beautiful of face, but vile and black of heart. It was rumored throughout the kingdom that Queen Morpha was trained in Black Magic and that she often used butterflies to do her dirty work.
But the one who was perhaps in the most danger was the beautiful young princess Padme, whose hair was soft as the petals of a new spring rose, and eyes like brown diamonds, and skin as white as snow. Some called her Snow Padme, and her late parents, they used to call her their little Snowdrop, and she always wore a crown of snowdrop flowers.
Queen Morpha had a magic mirror in her quarters. Every day, she asked it, "Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who is the fairest one of all?" and as long as the mirror said she was fairest in the land, Padme was safe.
But, still fearing that Padme's beauty may surpass her own, she dressed the princess in rags and forced her to work as a scullery maid.
Then came one fateful day when the queen came to her magic mirror while a gathering of visiting royals was going on.
"Slave in the Magic Mirror," said Queen Morpha. "Come from the farthest space. Through wind and darkness I summon thee."
A mysterious wind howled and thunder clapped in the mirror.
"Let me see thy face!"
And an image appeared in the mirror. An image of a man named Dooku.
"What is thy bidding, my queen?" said the mirror.
"Magic Mirror on the wall," said Morpha. "Who is the fairest one of all?"
"Your beauty is famous across the many kingdoms, Your Majesty." Dooku said. "But hold, a lovely maiden I see. Rags cannot hide her gentle grace nor the strength that lies within. Alas, she is fairer than you."
Queen Morpha did not like the sound of that.
"Reveal her name." she growled.
"Careful, my queen. You will give yourself worry lines."
"Just tell me who dares threaten my fairness!"
"Lips pink and soft as a rose, hair silky like fine chocolate, and crowned with flower drops of snow."
"Padme!" Morpha growled, knowing the mirror was talking about her stepdaughter.
On this seemingly fine day, the beautiful Princess Padme was humming to herself as she cleaned some of the stone steps in her garden. She heard music and laughter coming from inside as the visiting royals were enjoying themselves, and Padme was not allowed to go inside until they all left, or to interact with any of them.
Morpha never let Padme participate in royal events, fearing her beauty would call attention away from her. And now that she'd lost her husband, she was determined to marry a young, handsome prince from any of the richest kingdoms she could find.
Padme sighed as she rinsed the third step. Being a scullery maid was no picnic, but she had to do it until she figured out how to dethrone her tyrant stepmother.
"Oh, Mother. If only you were here." Padme sighed, looking at an entire area white roses her parents used to love sitting by. "You'd know how to fix things."
Ever since her father died after marrying Morpha, nothing was the same in the castle anymore. So, for the time being, Padme had to grin and bear with what was happening.
Padme walked over to the wishing well in her garden to get more water, some blue jays that liked to roam around her flowers landing nearby.
Padme smiled and looked at the birds.
"Want to know a secret?" Padme asked the birds, who chirped. "Promise not to tell?"
The birds chirped again, and Padme sang a song.
Padme: We are standing by a wishing well
Make a wish into the well
That's all you have to do
And if you hear it echoing
Your wish will soon come true.
Padme thought deep within her heart of what she wanted to wish for, and she recalled how happy she was with her parent before, and how madly in love they were. She wanted that very same kind of love her parents had, with a very special man.
I'm wishing (Echo: I'm wishing)
For the one I love
To find me (Echo: To find me)
Today (Echo: Today)
I'm hoping (Echo: I'm hoping)
And I'm dreaming of
The nice things (Echo: The nice things)
He'll say (Echo: He'll say)
Inside the palace, there were many royals, and among them was Young Prince Anakin from the kingdom of Coruscant. The queen had tried to flirt with him before, but he found any excuse to avoid her. He was not into dating women who were old enough to be his mother.
And that was when he heard beautiful singing. So, when no one was looking, he followed the singing to the castle garden.
Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah (Echo: Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah) I'm wishing (Echo: I'm wishing)
For the one I love
To find me (Echo: To find me)
Today
Anakin: Today
Padme was a bit startled by the sudden new voice. And she looked to see a young man with the most unbelievable blue eyes she'd ever seen. He flashed a charming smile at her.
"Hello." said the prince. "Did I frighten you?"
Padme said nothing. If Morpha saw her interacting with him, she'd be in trouble.
"Are you an angel?" asked the prince.
"What?" Padme asked.
"An angel. You clearly have the voice of one, and you definitely are a heavenly sight."
Padme saw what this prince was going at.
"Ah, so you adore my beauty, do you?"
"I do."
"And you believe a beautiful princess deserves a handsome prince?"
"A girl like you deserves nothing less. The right prince will always be by your side."
"As in you think I need a big strong man to protect me?" Padme's demeanor changed.
"I never said that." said the prince, scratching his head.
The prince stammered a bit.
"Please, forgive me, Miss. I didn't mean to offend you." said the prince. "Allow me to start again. My name is Anakin, Prince Anakin of Coruscant."
"Padme. Princess of Naboo." said the princess, holding out her hand, which Anakin took and kissed.
"Why are you out here cleaning and not in there enjoying yourself?" asked the prince.
"I'm not supposed to. Queen's orders."
"Did you do anything bad?"
"Just my existence is doing something bad in her eyes. So, she makes me dress like this and work as a scullery maid."
"You're a slave?"
"Not for long. One day, things will be better."
"Beautiful and determined." Anakin smiled again. "I like that."
Anakin figured, if Padme couldn't go inside for the ball, he'd stay out with her, and they danced in the garden together and got better acquainted with what time they had.
But what both of them failed to notice was Queen Morpha angrily glaring at their slowly growing affection from her window. She decided she wasn't going to sit and watch this any longer.
