A love knot of Ice and Fire
Eddard Stark I
King's Landing. 284 AC.
Eddard "Ned" Stark of Winterfell was a man of honour, so when he saw the soldiers of Tywin Lannister sacking King's Landing; slaughtering women and children, even raping them, to say that Ned was appalled was an understatement as he watched the Lannister soldiers committing the atrocities. To make matters worse, the Baratheon soldiers also joined in.
Ned watched at the soldiers wearing red armour in disgust as he and his banner men headed straight to the Red Keep, where Aerys II Targaryen, the Mad King, resided. He entered the throne room just after Ser Jaime Lannister of the Kingsguard pierced the heart of the Mad King with his sword. He found the young knight brazenly sitting on the Iron Throne with the corpse of the Mad King, a man unshaved and with nails long and sharp as if they were his claws, lying below it. Ned didn't hear it, but Jaime murmured 'burn them all' for the last time.
"It's over." Jaime said.
"Kingslayer." Ned said disgustedly, only for Jaime to smirk.
"Well said." The young knight replied with sarcasm. Just then, Robert Baratheon entered, followed by his brother Stannis, Lord Jon Arryn and Lord Tywin Lannister. They saw Jaime sitting on the throne and the king's corpse, guessing what happened. Without any hesitation, Robert approached and viciously spat at the dead king.
As he just did that, a few Lannister banner men entered, led by Ser Gregor Clegane, known as the "Mountain" due to his enormous size, and a sneering Amory Lorch. Ned noticed that the westermen were carrying something. He then realised that they were carrying someone. To his shock and horror, and not his, but Jon Arryn's also, the soldiers carried the corpses of Princess Elia Targaryen and her children, toddler Rhaenys and her brother, infant Aegon. To make matters worse, Ned Stark immediately deduced that Rhaenys was stabbed multiple times, while Princess Elia and her son had their heads smashed.
Without care, the Lannister men threw the bodies right in front of Robert Baratheon, with Armory Lorch chuckling, only to stop once Tywin glared at him deadly.
"Your grace," Lord Tywin addressed Robert Baratheon, who was proclaimed the new king of Westeros. "As a token of fealty, I present you the bodies of your enemies; Elia Martell-Targaryen, the wife of Rhaegar Targaryen, and their children Rhaenys and Aegon Targaryen."
Once he finished this, Ned Stark and the few men he had with him, drew out their swords, ready to fight the westermen.
"What is this, Ned? Put your sword down!" Robert ordered his childhood friend.
"I am arresting Lord Tywin Lannister and his men." Ned answered, not looking at Robert but at Tywin and his men. Armory snarled, drawing out his sword, while the Mountain grunted as he held his flail tighter.
"What in the Seven Hells is wrong with you, Ned?" Robert asked. "Lord Tywin is one our side, he helped us take this fucking city and the dragon lair."
"They were children, Robert. There are not guilty of the sins committed by their father and the king. You must punish Tywin for this. We did not go to war to slaughter babes. We went to war to end the madness of Aerys." Ned objected, but only looked at Robert in horror as Baratheon looked at him back with no remorse.
"There are no babes, but dragonspawn." Robert answered before spitting at the toddler while Ser Lorch began chuckling at the corpses again. Tywin didn't stop him as he watched Ned, smirking in arrogance. Ned turned to Jon Arryn, in hopes of his mentor to put some wisdom into Robert, but he was nowhere to be seen. The Lord of the Vale returned to the throne room a few minutes later.
"Robert, we have information that Queen Rhaella and her son, Viserys, are hiding in Dragonstone." Jon reported.
"What the bloody fuck are they doing there?" Robert snarled. "Doesn't matter anymore. Stannis and Ned, go out there and kill the fucking dragonspawn. I don't want any Targaryens left in my kingdoms or in this world."
"As you say, brother." Stannis nodded and left. Ned hesitantly followed. Before he left, he turned around one last time as Robert began laughing about his successive rebellion, laughing at the dead Targaryen children. As he left, Ned heard Robert telling Jaime to finally get off 'his' throne.
Dragonstone.
Ned wasn't prepared for what he saw. Once the unified Stark-Baratheon forces broke into the castle, somewhere in the walls a cry was heard. Ned Stark and Howland Reed reached the Queen's chambers and found a wailing Queen Rhaella, covered in blood, surrounded by maidens and maesters. As her belly was swollen, the two Northmen understood that the Targaryen queen was pregnant and giving birth right now.
"Your grace." Ned barely spoke, addressing her like that as a habit. Queen Rhaella turned to him, seeing the two. Her breathing was slow and she could barely see them, but she immediately guessed who they were.
"Lord Eddard?" she asked, causing Ned to nod as Stannis Baratheon entered. "Please, have mercy. My children are innocent."
"I promise, your children won't be harmed as long as I won't allow it." Ned reassured her. Just then, Rhaella cried as the handmaidens pulled the crying baby from her womb and the exhausted queen took it into her arms.
"It's a girl, your grace. She is quite healthy and beautiful." The maester spoke, observing the child. Rhaella smiled, looking at her new-born daughter, for a short time as she once again turned to the three lords.
"Lord Stark." She spoke to Ned once again, motioning for him to come closer.
"Yes, my queen." He answered as he approached and leaned closer to her.
"I'm no queen anymore, Eddard." Rhaella objected. "I understand what you are feeling, and I understand your anger towards my husband, let him rot in Seven Hells, and my firstborn. I am truly sorry for your father and brother. Lord Rickard was a great man. But my children are innocent."
"You have nothing to apologise for, milady. For you have done nothing wrong, neither did your grandchildren and your other children." Eddard comforted her, causing Rhaella to smile again.
"My other son," Rhaella continued. "my only son now, Viserys, has been sent to Essos. I hope he will be safe in the free cities. My baby is too young to travel overseas. I know this is too much for you, and possibly I'm making a big mistake doing this, but I ask you. No, I beg you, Eddard, to take my daughter and protect her."
"I will take her in, I will raise her as my own and protect her." Eddard Stark nodded before asking. "Does she have a name?"
"Daenerys… Daenerys Targaryen." Rhaella answered, her breathing being raspy. She then looked at her new-born daughter.
"Dany, my little Dany." She cooed. "I'm so sorry that I'm leaving you. Just know, your mother loves you, my beautiful girl. I love you, Dany."
With that, Rhaella motioned for Eddard to take the silver-haired baby girl. Eddard did so, just as the former queen of Westeros passed away. The chambers were filled with silence except for the thunder outside as the storm continue to rage. As Eddard held the infant in his arms, Howland closed her eyes. The two looked at each other, affected by the whole scene. Even Stannis stood there, shocked at what he just saw, as he took off his helmet with stag horns in respect to the dead Targaryen.
"So what now?" Howland then asked as they allowed the maesters and maidens to take care of the body and organise a proper funeral for Rhaella Targaryen.
"You heard it, I'm taking her to Winterfell." Declared Eddard.
"Are you sure, Lord Stark?" Stannis asked, still not believing it.
"Positive." Ned answered with confidence. "She is not responsible for what her father did to my family or to anyone who suffered under the Mad King. She is innocent, just as Princess Elia and her children."
"As much as I agree with you, Lord Eddard," Stannis spoke. "We still must present the girl to my brother. If he will discover you are hiding a Targaryen behind his back, you and your family will be in grave danger, and the fact that you fostered at the Vale together with him and are friends will not save you."
"You're right, Lord Stannis." Eddard reluctantly admitted. Just then, the infant Daenerys began crying in the arms of Ned Stark.
"Shh. There, there, Daenerys Stormborn, you're safe. I'll protect you." Ned cooed the girl as he kissed her in the forehead before wrapping her in a cloak to keep the child warm. As the handmaidens tended to the queen's body, the three lords left the chambers.
Throughout the journey back to King's Landing, the 21-year-old Eddard held the little girl in his arms, except for the time when the wetnurse had to feed her. Looking at Daenerys once more, Eddard entered the throne room along with Stannis. The 20-year-old Baratheon assured him that he will speak for him once they introduce Dany to Robert, and Ned hoped that Robert would at least listen to his brother.
Once they entered, they saw Robert Baratheon sitting on the Iron Throne, holding a goblet. Right beside the throne stood Jon Arryn. Both Eddard and Stannis shared looks once they saw the batch of the Hand of the King on Arryn's chest. Eddard growled in disgust once he saw that Jaime Lannister was still a member of the Kingsguard as he stood there along with Meryn Trant.
"Ned!" Robert shouted with joy. "You're finally here, ya bastard!"
"Queen Rhaella is dead, Robert." Stannis spoke with calm, though Eddard noticed that he was frustrated with Robert dismissing him.
"I knew you will see it how I see it. After killing a godsdawn dragon inbred I can declare that you're a man now, Ned." Robert continued to ignore his younger brother.
"She died at childbirth, your grace." Ned told the new king. Just then, Robert noticed that Eddard was carrying something wrapped around in his cloak. He then saw a small human head with silver hair on it.
"What the Seven Hells is that?! What are you holding?!" he yelled, drawing attention from both Jon Arryn and the two knights.
"Robert, this is Daenerys Targaryen and she is a new-born. Her mother, died in childbirth." Eddard told him with caution as Robert's face was filled with hatred.
"What in the name of the Seven Kingdoms is that bitch doing here?!" Robert asked. "Give it to Lord Tywin or the Mountain."
"I will not let you murder a child, Robert." Eddard argued.
"She is nothing more but dragonspawn. Kingslayer, go fetch her!" Robert ordered. Ser Jaime went towards Lord Stark and Daenerys, drawing out his sword. Eddard drew out his sword, Ice, while being joined by Stannis.
"What is the meaning of this Stannis?" a surprised Robert spoke to his brother for the first time.
"Eddard is right, Robert." Stannis answered. "Daenerys is only a few days old, she is innocent and does not deserve the same fate as her niece and nephew."
"You dare to speak against your king?!"
"First of all, you are my brother." Stannis answered. "Secondly, you may be a king, but already with a negative reputation. The news about the murder of Prince Rhaegar's children have already spread across the Seven Kingdoms, and maybe Essos too. People already call you a usurper. They may even call you a childslayer."
"Your brother is right," Eddard added. "As a king, you must show mercy, or you will be no better than the Mad King."
"You compare me with to the bastard whose son, her brother, kidnapped my Lyanna?" Robert barked at his friend.
"Robert, listen to your brother and friend." Jon Arryn spoke as he approached Robert Baratheon from behind. "If you kill another child, your reputation will be ruined, and we cannot afford any uprisings right now when your rule is unstable. By showing mercy, you will gain more favour not only among your followers, but also among the Targaryen loyalists such as the Dornish or Tyrells."
"We have been fighting for justice, Rob." Eddard spoke once again. "But this slaughter is not justice. Where is the honour of this massacre?"
"Fuck you Ned with your fucking North and your fucking honour!" Robert snarled at him. "Get out of here! Get out of my city, and take that dragonspawn with you! I don't want it to ruin my coronation. But bring my Lyanna back."
"Thank you, your grace." Eddard nodded as he quickly left the throne room. Daenerys was once again crying after Robert woke her up with his anger.
"Shh, it's okay, you're safe, he won't harm you. Do not fear, Dany. I'm here. We're going home soon." He rocked the baby girl. Just then, a young boy around seven years old appeared and began looking at the girl with curiosity.
"Who's that, Lord Eddard?" the boy asked.
"Hello, Renly. This is Daenerys Stormborn." Ned showed the baby girl to the youngest Baratheon.
"She looks cute," Renly noted, causing Ned to smile.
