Chapter 3: The Flight
The flight intercom turned on, two beeps were heard. "Hello! This is your captain speaking, welcome aboard passengers! We are headed to Paris, France." The captain was laying back, feet on the dashboard of the plane. His arms were behind his head, yelling so the microphone could hear his message.
Shinji began to watch the safety video, kicking his legs back. Asuka tapped him on the shoulder, "Why watch it?" Shinji shrugged, "Just in case." Asuka rolled her eyes, going back to watch her German movie. Shinji watched the safety video, making a mental note of all the possible scenarios. She switched it off, pulling out the controller to play some street fighter. He started mashing the controller, not remembering how to play anymore. He started to get the hang of it, throwing his legs on the half reclined chair. Asuka was in a red sweater/turtleneck to combat the cold flight. She looked over, "Rematch?"
"Rematch." He smiled, booting up the multiplayer. Asuka turned on street fighter, joining his game. They locked in their characters, both holding the controllers tight. Shinji shut the blinds, hiding his controller activities. They began to brawl it out, the characters in a heated debate over doors or wheels. Asuka ended up getting the upper hand in this match. Winning 2 out of the 3 matches. Shinji clicked the blinds button, watching them whir open. "Admit defeat." Asuka laughed, having her arms crossed. "You win…" Shinji told her, putting his controller back in the container.
"Attention, we are cleared for takeoff." The pilot announced, the plane started to soar down the runway. Asuka began to whimper. "Hm?" Shinji asked, turning towards his wife. "Why do you think I was on the sea fleet… I hate planes so much." Asuka admitted, closing her eyes. "You, Asuka. Are you scared of planes?" Shinji asked, Asuka nodding. Shinji held her hand, "It's fine." Shinji told her, watching the outside camera, displaying the wheels barely touching the runway. Both parted, officially putting them in the air. They soared through the air, flying higher and higher. Asuka leaned forward, "I never told you about my fear of flying?"
Shinji nodded, letting go of her hand. He popped on his movie again, reaching his arm out just in case. He leaned back, taking a deep breath. Shinji's movie was halfway over, he shut it off. 'Shit's boring anyway.' he thought, removing his headphones. He put them back in the bag, shoving it in the desk drawer. Shinji started to fidget with his hand, pulling out his SDAT. He played his only mixtape, rewinding to track 1.
The pilot began another announcement. "Helllo! We have reached our cruising altitude. Feel free to use the bathroom!"
Asuka finished her movie, noticing that Shinji was on his SDAT. 'Wow, he still has it.' Asuka thought, turning off her TV, going over to the bathrooms. She slid it open, revealing very polished and clean bathrooms.
She came back after a while, "Bathrooms are incredible!" She yawned, stretching in her seat. Shinji heard another knock on his door, jerking his head to the left. He twisted the lock open, letting the flight attendant in. She walked in with a giant rack of food. She began pulling out Shinji's table, placing several items on it. A platter of cheese, caviar, fruits, and a filet mignon were put in front of him. "Wow." was all he could mutter. They finish, shutting his door, waving him goodbye. They turned to Asuka's suite, opening the door and doing the same process. Shinji hopped on his TV, ordering two orders of champagne. He waited for about 2 ½ minutes, humming to a random song. The flight attendants slid open his door once more, giving him two glasses of champagne. Nudging Asuka, she had a full mouth of food. "What?" She tried to talk, muffled by food. She swallowed, taking the glass of champagne from his hand. "Cheers!" Shinji cheered enthusiastically. A drop fell on the carpeted floor, the clinking of the glass was a peaceful and soothing noise.
They both gulped the glass, smiling at each other. Shinji began to try all of his food, taking a mental note of each single bite.
"So, what do you want to do?" Shinji asked, Asuka shrugging. "We have like what, 8 hours left on the flight." Asuka told him, finishing her food. "Guess so, chess?" Shinji asked her, and she gave him a blank stare. "Really? Boring." Asuka told him, turning around. Shinji was the president of the chess club in one of his old schools. "How much do you wanna bet Misato is crying over no alcohol?" Asuka betted, pulling out 10000 yen out of her purse.
"I'll even you, 10,000." Shinji told her, pulling out a stack of 10000 yen. "It's like 12:00 AM in the morning in Japan, let's wait until we get off the plane." Shinji told her, pulling out an ice-cold soda out of the drawer. He flipped it, trying to do a trick. 'Should I warn him? Nah." Asuka thought to herself, keeping her eyes fixed on her husband. "Why are you staring?" Shinji asked her, about to break the seal off the lid. "You're handsome" She lied, kind of. He cracked open the soda, watching it fizz and soda foam flew everywhere. The suite became a foamy mess, lemon-lime soda was everywhere, giving the room a weird scent. Asuka started to laugh, slamming her curled fist on her lap. "Thanks." Shinji told her sarcastically, using the napkins to clean himself and everything else around him. He drank the remaining bit of his soda, throwing it in the garbage can next to him.
"I'm pretty tired." Asuka announced, pulling a blanket over herself. She pulled the bed fully out, placing the pillow under her head. She shut off the lights in her seat, putting on a red sleep mask. She yawned another time, "Night, love."
Shinji kissed her forehead, pulling his bed fully out, and did the same. He pulled sheets onto the bed, making sure that there were no wrinkles. He tucked him in, turning off the movie he was in the middle of. It was around 4:30 AM Local Time. He made sure his door was locked, stretching out. "Mm." He groaned, falling asleep.
Shinji stretched out, hitting the wall of his suite. He made a loud bump noise, waking the ex-pilot up instantly. He sat up, opening the door of his room. It was morning at this point, at least wherever they were. He turned on his screen, swapping to the built-in map. "½ hour left, nice." Shinji muttered, opening the blinds separating him from his wife. "Wake up, hun." Shinji whispered in Asuka's ear, pulling her covers off. "Mhm, 5 more minutes." Asuka muttered pulling her blanket back on top of her.
Shinji chuckled a bit, ordering himself breakfast. A flight attendant flew to his suite, sliding open his door and placing in front of him, a giant breakfast. It was free because of the first class, 'How nice!' Shinji thought, starting to dig in. "Hey, save me some." Asuka muttered, moving around. "Idiot."
Shinji climbed over to her suite, ordering her breakfast. He shook his wife awake, "Come on, wake up!" Shinji raised his voice, taking off her eye mask. She blinked her eyes, looking up at Shinji. "Ass." She told him, sitting up, checking the time. "It's early." Asuka rubbed her eyes vigorously, shaking herself awake. She opened her door, greeting the flight attendant, who identified her. "Wow! Asuka, so that means you're-" the flight attendant started, Shinji finished her sentence. "Shinji Ikari, yes."
Asuka started to devour her breakfast, downing 2 cups of coffee in an instant. "Okay, I'm awake." Asuka told him, punching his shoulder. "Don't wake me up again." she told him, pointing a finger and being extremely stern. Shinji nodded, nervously laughing. Asuka finished her breakfast, Shinji was still eating his, and finished the piece of french toast. "Happy honeymoon, Asuka." Shinji told her, showing her the clock. "We got a cou-"
The humming of the intercom system played, "Hello passengers, welcome to France! We will be touching down in XX:15 minutes." The pilot cheered, and the plane started its descent. The tilt shifted, causing everybody to go back a little in their seats. The seatbelt sign blinked, turning on to alert the passengers to not get up and randomly dance in the middle of the aisle. Of course, nobody was stupid to do that. Right? Right…?
Asuka whimpered again, grabbing Shinji's arm. "I still can't believe you are afraid of planes. You are scared of nothing!"
"Shut it." Asuka told him, dragging him towards her. The touchdown went smoothly. The plane hit the ground, being one of the best flights Shinji has been on. It slowed down on the runway, leaving the plane at a standstill. "It wasn't that hard, was it?" Shinji asked Asuka, holding back a laugh. Asuka got up, grabbing her suitcase, following Shinji out of the plane.
"Jesus, that was a long flight." Shinji remarked, stretching for about 10 seconds. Both of them stepped onto the bridge, walking around and breathing fresh air. "I hate these." Asuka stomped over, looking around for her suitcase on the roller. It took them at least 7 rotations and 15 minutes before they found the suitcases. Asuka began grumbling about how idiotic it was. "Welcome to France." Shinji told her, rolling all of the suitcases over to the exit of the airport. 'God, why are these so heavy?'
They stepped out, in the heart of Paris. The breeze was nice, with a touch of moisture in the air. The sun was in solar noon, shining directly down on the city.
Asuka called over a taxi, watching as the car slowed and stopped in front of them. The doors clicked, letting them through. Shinji threw the bags onto the seat, giving the driver the address.
"So, you guys are traveling?" The man asked, looking back at the young couple. "Yea, we are from Japan. Honeymoon and everything." Shinji replied, surprised that he knew how to speak japanese. "Congrats."
They drove around the beautiful city, passing beautiful landmarks, most people only seeing them in movies. They stopped in front of a luxury hotel, tan in color with brick outlines. There were several plants outside, giving the hotel an earthy feel. The color scheme reminded Shinji of the NERV HQ, tan and brown. There were French words on the front. Both of them didn't know how to speak French. 'God, we are in for a treat.' Shinji pulled on his collar, dragging the heavy bags into the hotel. There was a doorman who opened the door, gesturing the ex-pilots inside. Shinji walked up to the front counter, pulling out his phone. He showed the secretary his phone, proving the purchase of the suite. The kind woman kicked off of the desk, causing the chair to slide on its wheels over to the key box. Grabbing a key, she slid back shaking it in front of them. Shinji grabbed it, nodding his head. Asuka stood behind him as dragged the heavy load of luggage into the elevator. "I can't speak French, this may be awkward…" Shinji whispered to her, letting her go into the elevator. She looked over to the side, "I can't either. Fuck." Asuka muttered, clicking the elevator button to the 12th floor.
The elevator moved along the cable, sending Shinji, Asuka, and the luggage up to the 12th floor. Shinji kept dragging the luggage along the rollers, Asuka following him. 'Can she at least take one?' he rolled his eyes, averting his gaze towards their room. Asuka grabbed the key from his pocket, sliding it into the keyhole and twisting, revealing a honeymoon suite.
"Tired?" Shinji asked her, not even reacting to the room. "Tired." Asuka replied, throwing herself onto the bed, face first.
