Summary:
Some games, you win some, you lose some. Others, losing's not an option.
"I have a vacant point."
"Satoru-kun, I understand you want to be my guardian, but you don't have to let me win at go too!" Hiromi giggled.
"Oh what? Sorry, I didn't realize I was going easy on you. Do you want to restart, Hiromi?"
Satoru was so in his own head playing 3D chess with the unknown child murderer, he was failing at go with Hiromi.
Honestly.
Honestly, losing to Hiromi was a nonissue for him. What's important was he didn't lose to the kidnapper!
Satoru had to protect Hiromi no matter what. He couldn't allow the murderer to make gains. The murderer couldn't be allowed to take even one of his future targets out of play.
A town where only Hiromi was missing.
A town where only Nakanishi Aya was missing.
If this was a video game, Satoru was on his last life. He was confident there were no Revivals left after the last reset.
Satoru wouldn't take his eyes off Hiromi when he was with him. He would make sure Hiromi wasn't alone at all other times.
Since Hiromi's stones were black, he takes the initiative and clears the board. At first, they play normally, but the same game state repeats.
"I have a vacant point," Hiromi says, his smile lighting up both their cheeks.
History repeating itself here was acceptable.
Satoru humours him. Only once. The game continues fairly from there.
He'd forgotten what it was like to be happy. His fulfilling friendships. The bashful glee Hiromi captures upon his unannounced victory.
Hiromi's eyes weren't the eyes of your typical friend. Perhaps to a child, they were, but Satoru had the benefit of foresight.
Serial killer, stay the hell away. You weren't taking Hiromi.
Satoru was taking Hiromi off the board first.
