Chapter 2

First death

My eyes are blurry with the unshed tears in my eyes. I stare down at the card on the table. The card that the Detective placed down right before he walked off, but not before asking each one of us to call him if we could remember anything else. I can hear the muffles of the others talking among themselves… but I can't make out their words.

Anything else? What else was there?

I continue to sit on the barstool, feeling the heat of the coffee between my hands as I continue to stare the card down. Was it just an hour ago that Uriah called me, breaking the news that something had happened and to get down to the student lounge immediately. Never in a million years did I think this would be it.

I just about ran over here, not knowing what to expect really. I was surprised when I saw the amount of police and what appeared to be a detective talking to my friends. Of course, some of them like Lauren didn't shed a tear, let alone act surprised by the news. But others like Mathew and Molly were shocked.

The story is that Nita drove off campus, stopped at a gas station last night. As she paid for the gas, she was approached by the gas attendant, in an attempt to save her life, Nita thought the attendant was hitting on her. She kicked him good and hard in the nuts before running off and getting into her car to escape him. What she didn't know was that the attendant was trying to warn her about the person that was hiding in the back seat of her car. The attendant tried to phone the police with his concerns. Of course, it was too late. The cops found Nita's car crashed on the side of the road. There was enough blood to point them in the direction that she had been murdered, but her body was missing. The police questioned us for what felt like an eternity.

"Did we know she was leaving? Was she dating anyone? Did she have any enemies?" The questions went on and on.

I didn't even know she was seeing anyone specifically at the time. I recall the events of last night. She and I both walked back to the dorms together. Stopping off to play that stupid theory at Erudite Hall, Four was there. He fucked with us for sure. Who could blame him? Two stupid girls playing a round of Bloody Mary in front of a boarded up and supposedly haunted Dorm. But everything was fine. We parted ways when we got in the Dauntless Dorms. She seemed fine, like she was going to go up to her dorm room and change and maybe watch some TV. Like she always had in the past. She didn't seem keyed up or anything to suggest like she was going to go out.

"Hey." Four's gentle voice calls for my attention. I finally looked up into his worried ocean blue eyes. They are boring into mine, searching for the unspeakable words. "Is there anything I can do?" he asks.

"I … I don't think so," I say. What could he do? He nods, looking down for just a minute.

"Why don't I walk you back to your dorm?" He asks, placing his hand on my back. I nod, standing up from the barstool. Everyone waves me off, not knowing what else to say for the time ever. Nita was a lot of things… but who would do this? Who would hurt her? We stop outside of my dorm door, I turn, giving him a small smirk. But obviously distracted. I'm not someone who is good company right now for obvious reasons.

"Tris, I'm sorry for… all of this… If there is anything I can do…" He says, letting his words trail off. Not needing to finish his words. I nod, wiping the tear that escapes my eye. I swear from the corner of my eye I thought I saw him lifting his hand towards my face. I must be imagining things. We stay there, in completely comfortable silence, not needing to speak or move. Before he finally says his goodbyes and leaves me standing there staring after him. What the hell was that?

I enter my dorm room; my eyebrows crease together when I see Christina is already back from her class. She smirks, as she continues on with whatever she is doing on her computer. No doubt probably meeting another guy.

"So, what… did someone spray paint Dauntless Hall or something?" Christina says, sarcasm filling her voice. Her fingers stop in place on the keyboard when I don't reply. She finally looks up; her smirk disappears when she sees the look of complete disappear on my face. "Oh god, who's dead?" She says, lightly.

"Nita," I whisper. I can see my answer takes her by surprise. She obviously wasn't expecting someone to have really died. I relay what the police told everyone. I sit down on my bed, feeling more tired than I have ever felt in my life. No one close to me has ever died before.

"Tris, I'm so sorry… I… had no idea." She says, raising her eyebrows in shock. I nod, accepting her apology. We stare off at each other, unable to believe that this kind of thing has happened to someone we both know. Didn't we just play that game last night… joking about massacres that supposedly happened here. And now…

A bing on her computer goes off, snapping both of us out of our thoughts. She smirks widely, glancing down at her screen. I can tell by the excitement in her eyes that whoever is messaging her, is telling her exactly what she wants to hear or read.

"Chris, maybe you shouldn't…" I begin. "I mean we don't know who attacked Nita. They're out there somewhere… We don't know who they are…" I explained in all honesty. We don't know who this person that attacked Nita is, we don't know what they are doing to her or when they might strike again. I can see the anger growing behind her eyes before she strikes back.

"You have no business telling me who I can and cannot do…" She blurts out. She closes her laptop, dropping it on her bed before reaching down and grabbing her bag and stokes out of the room, slamming the door on her way out.

Tears fall down my face as I lay down, curling my legs up in my bed. I lay in the same spot for what feels like hours before I finally sit back up. I look up at the time. I've got forty minutes before my next class starts. I know Four would excuse me, tell the Professor what happened, but I need to do something. I can't just sit here and cry. I wipe my face with my bare hands, as I stand from the bed and gather a few clothes to change into. I grab my bag on my way out.

I walk into class, glancing around the room. The dry erase board on the wall shows us what page to open in our textbooks. Another lecture day. I'm not sure if I should be thankful or not, seeing that I could probably get away with not mentally being here today.

"Tris?" Four questions from his desk. He quickly stands up and heads over to me. He stops his approach when he is just inches away from me. I can feel the heat radiating from him. He is so close. "What are you doing here?" He asks. "I would have excused you." He finishes.

"I couldn't just sit around… I needed to do something," I explained. He nods, pressing his lips into a frown.

"Okay. Just… Let me know if you need anything." He says, gesturing to my seat. I nod, heading back up three steps and four chairs to the right. I sit down, placing my bag in front of my feet. I pull out my textbook, binder and a pen before bringing the board down to my lap. I settle in, noticing that there are another ten minutes before class officially starts. Professor Walker walks in, placing a pile of folders on his desk and leans against it. He waits casually like he always does. Waiting for his alarm to go off, signaling him to lock the door.

I stare off into nothingness, biting the edge of my pen as my mind wanders. Who could have done this? Why? Did she make someone upset? Was there an enemy I didn't know about? And where was she going?

My mind continues to think of things that we had talked about that day. She never once mentioned an errand, seeing anyone, or needing to go somewhere. Where was she going? Why at that hour?

A hand gently touches my arm, I startle unexpectedly. I look around the room, the now empty room. Four stands before me, worried as he waits for me to respond to him.

"What?" I ask, confused and barely above a whisper.

"Are you alright?" Four questions. "Class ended like five minutes ago," he says. He is right, even the professor has left.

"Yeah. I'm just a little out of it," I say. I pack up my things and get myself ready to leave. I stand up, the room begins to spin around and around. Warm, large and strong hands catch my shoulders as I feel myself begin to tumble.

"Are you sure you are, okay?" He asks, with concern in his voice.

"Um, yeah. Just got up a little too fast." I answer.

"When was the last time you ate something?" He asks. I take a minute to think, not able to remember when the exact time was or even the date of the last time I ate.

"Umm… last night… Maybe." I guess. He nods, once again evaluating me with his eyes.

"Come on. Let's go to the cafeteria. I'm starving." He suggests.

We head down the crowded hall. My eyes glance everywhere from face to face. They all seem to know the news. They all seem to glance at me, obviously talking about Nita's death. I feel the eyes on me as we pass them. I feel Four stiffen beside me, as he must hear them too.

"On second thought. How about we get off of campus." He suggested.

"I like the sound of that. Where are we going?" I ask.

"Do you trust me, Tris?" He asks, an evil smirk on his lips.

"I guess so," I answer, my eyes squinting at him. I wonder what he has up his sleeve. We begin to move forward with a mission, trying to get out of the non stop chattering.

"I heard she was going to go gang fuck some guys in the woods and got butchered instead." Someone says as we pass them.

"Hey," Four roars. "Why don't you all show some respect and be decent people for a change." He says, as we walk out the double doors and towards the parking lot. His hand on my back guides me to his jeep, making me feel safe.

A/N

Nothing like Four to the rescue. Where do you think he might take her? Any good guesses?

See you all next week.
