"I don't have to go to school this week!? Really!?" Kid Sasuke was absolutely elated, hands slammed down onto the table looking just as gleeful as his future self thought he'd be. The two hokage listening in from the hallway.

"That's right." Mikoto smiled cheerfully at him.

"Your mother and I have been discussing the idea for a while now and we don't want you to overwork yourself." Fugaku told him arms crossed. "Time off from the academy will do your body good so you don't strain yourself."

Kid Sasuke's smile vanished in an instant. It faltered flipping to a frown. Just like that his happy mood had vanished. Did his father not think he could handle the academy? Was he calling him weak? Is that what he thought of him? Itachi never took a break from the academy. Sure he was training super hard but that was just because he wanted to do his best. "Oh. Well, that's okay. I can handle it, Father. I don't need one. Really, breaks are for losers anyways." He shot a glare skywards where the idiot was likely making a mess of his room. "Like Naruto."

In the hallway Naruto punched Sasuke's arm lightly. But the hokage's smile vanished when he got no reaction from his husband. He was just staring at the floor. Naruto's head tilted in concern, his fist flattened out against his husbands arm. "Sas...?"

He received no response.

"That's not a very nice thing to say about your friend Sasuke." Mikoto admonished her young son.

"It's only true! Naruto's a slacker. He cuts class all the time. But I'm not. I don't. I'm trying my hardest, I-I'm the top of my class. I don't have to miss school to rest. I'm fine. It's my responsibility to attend. I can handle it. Really."

"Not for this week Sasuke...we already spoke to your teachers." Mikoto tried to be gentle. "You can go back next week. It's alright."

Naruto's hand slid to Sasuke's shoulder out in the back hall. The two kage could hear everything going on in there. The sheer anguish he heard in his future husbands voice...the desperation of Sasuke's younger self... it was heartbreaking. The Uzumaki knew whatever was running through his husbands head wasn't good. It was never good when Sasuke hid behind his bangs. Currently, he could barely see his husbands face at all. He had to get him out of here.

"Sas...hey, let's take a walk. Make sure everything's secure. Do a perimeter sweep with me, yeah?" He guided him by his arm. "Cmon, let's go."

Sasuke nodded, curtly. That wasn't a bad idea. Honestly the shadow hokage would jump at any chance to stop listening to the alive voices of his dead family. Seeing them alive again wasn't the worst part. It was seeing the disappointment in his fathers gaze, hearing that disapproving tone. It was only bringing him more pain. He felt like someone was scraping over scabbed wounds tearing them open in search of fresh blood.

He walked beside Naruto. They fell into step. Naruto's hands behind his head, Sasuke's both shoved in his pockets. They'd left their cloaks behind at the house. It was a warm summer day. They'd likely just started the academy relatively recently. He kept his eyes on the ground, so many memories swirling in his head. He knew this wasn't really about recon. They probably had a few days before the follower arrived. Naruto had noticed he was upset. That had to be it. Of course he did. Naruto was adept at reading him. He was grateful his husband had come up with the excuse to lure him outside. He hadn't had the strength to leave on his own.

"You want to talk about what's eating you? It's fine it you don't. I know it's gotta be hard seeing your family..."

"It is, but I-I was prepared for that."

"Were you?" Naruto's blue eyes were on Sasuke's. Studying him as if he had a byakugan and could see his face through his bangs. "Really?"

"I knew it would hurt." Sasuke replied he lifted his head to the sky to feel the sun on his face. "But...I forgot..." Sasuke sighed, trailing off. "...I thought I was prepared."

Which meant he wasn't now. Naruto lowered his hands down and grabbed Sasuke's hand. "What threw you?" Naruto felt guilty. He really did. He'd sat next to Sasuke the whole time, only really left his side to take a leak, sure Sasuke had been grumbly as a grizzly, but he seemed fine given the circumstances.

"My dad opened his fucking mouth, what else."

"I didn't hear him say anything too bad." Naruto replied and Sasuke tore his hand from his grip.

"He made it seem like I couldn't handle being an academy student."

"Your reading too much into it." Naruto denied. "He doesn't think that."

"Yes, he does." There was that cold shoulder Sasuke threw up whenever something was wicked hard for him to explain.

"Do I have to drag your ass to the valley of the end right now?" Luckily for Naruto he knew how to get past it. "Sasuke. Don't shut down on me and say I don't understand. I know everything's hard right now and it's got you all stressed ...but I need you to talk to me. Please."

Sasuke sighed. It shouldn't hurt. He shouldn't let it get to him. He was a grown man. He was a kage and yet, it killed him that his father wasn't proud of him.

"Sasuke..."

"He's never been proud of me." Sasuke whispered the words so low that Naruto strained to hear them. "My father. He could have...called pulling young me out of school a reward you know. For my hard work. Could have said I earned myself a vacation for doing so well and instead he just...makes me feel worthless." Sasuke's fist clenched by his side. He shut his eyes. Their walk pausing under the shade of a tree. "...no matter what I do. No matter how hard I try...I'm never going to be good enough for him. I will never be Itachi."

"That's good."

"It's good?" Sasuke repeated perplexed.

"I married you, Sasuke. I don't want you to be anyone but yourself."

"But my father, he does. The fact that he saw me now...fucking highest position you could possibly have in this village...and he still treated my kid self like that it...it hurt, Naruto. I didn't take it the wrong way. He still looked at me like he was hoping for more. Like I hadn't lived up to any of his expectations. I just...I'm so sick of being a disappointment. I was so stupid to think he'd be proud of me for once. That he'd ever treat me different than he did before. Hearing him talk to me like that it I don't know...I..." Sasuke shut his eyes.

"Hey," Naruto led him round behind the tree so they could have a smidgen of privacy, and slid a hand to Sasuke's cheek, thumb carding his hanging bangs aside so he could see his Rinnegan. "It's going to be okay. Don't let him get to you."

"It's too late for that." Sasuke admitted, he leaned into Naruto's touch. Naruto's thumb brushed against his cheek. Sasuke really was sensitive. He felt things so deeply. Took so much to heart. Even words. Especially when they were from someone he loved. "I'll try to get over it. For the both of us. But I'm not happy."

Naruto smiled. "You know I think I know a way to deal with that grumpy mood of yours." He leaned in to give his husband a tender kiss.

"Sasuke reciprocated with an eager tilt of his head welcoming the pleasurable distraction. Sasuke would have deepened the kiss further if not for the fact that his brother appeared with Shisui at his side.

"Yo-oh. Well, this is awkward." Shisui leaned towards Itachi. Shisui's face completely colored though Itachi's was blank as ever. "Itachi, I don't think this is a good time."

"For you maybe." Naruto pulled back from Sasuke. "Did you two need something? Can it wait?"

"No," Itachi crossed his arms.

Sasuke gave his brother a withering stare over Naruto's shoulder. "I'm a little busy here."

"You know what our fathers planning Sasuke. We have to stop the coup. Making out with your husband doesn't take precedence over that."

"Oh," Sasuke scowled, eyes narrowed. "Is that what you think?" Naruto knew that look. He made to grab his husbands arm. But Sasuke shoved past Naruto with ease. "So, what, I'm part of the group now am I? You come to me now when I already know every little detail. Not when I was young, and scared and confused because something was wrong but no one would tell me what til it was too late? I don't have to do shit. I came back to protect me and my husband. Nothing more. The clan can get slaughtered. I don't care."

"You don't mean that." Shisui frowned.

"Actually," Naruto rubbed the back of his head. "He kind of does. You die and Itachi um...lord third gives him this mission..."

"Naruto." Sasuke glared. "Stop."

Naruto tilted his head to the side and sighed. "We knew we would be tempted when we came here. To change the things that went wrong in our lives, deaths we wish we could reverse...loved ones we want back...but if we change things too much the future will...it could cease to be. As kage it's our job to ensure that our future village stays safe. We won't help you." Naruto looked at Sasuke's retreating back.

"Let's go, Naruto. This discussions over." Sasuke was getting ready to teleport with his Rinnegan. He could feel it. "We have better things to do."

"You can't be serious." Shisui protested.

"We are. I'm sorry." Naruto looked to Shisui before his blue eyes settled on Itachi. He placed a hand on Sasuke's shoulder. "But this clan has hurt my husband one too many times. He doesn't have to save anything he doesn't want to. Tell your mother we won't be coming for dinner. We'll check in with you tomorrow."

With that said they disappeared Sasuke teleporting them away.

Okay so the readers have spoken! I'm going to be continuing this story so long as people keep voicing their interest. Because let's be real why pour your heart and soul into a work no one feels like reading? As such I have a couple quick questions for you dear readers!

1. I'm debating including some steamy scenes between the husbands in here. Add some porn to this plot. Should I? Are people comfortable with that? Or should I just fade out and in before and after the fact? You tell me!

2. Is there anything your really hoping to see in this story? I'm being honest I'm making this up as I go so if you have ideas I'm open to them.
