"Okay, Start!"
I'm somewhat ashamed to admit it took me a few seconds to react, like every other applicant here I expected a countdown or a warning. Given time to think about it it made sense, heroes usually didn't get a warning before being called to action. Despite my delayed reaction I was the first person through the gate, it helps to have a quirk that can help you move quickly.
The official title listed on my medical files called my quirk "Attraction". It was a serviceable name as it explained what my quirk did fairly concisely. I however usually call it "Gravity well" because that's cooler. I was still 16. I'm allowed to be somewhat childish.
My quirk allowed two different uses of the same phenomenon: 1 to pull an object of a low enough weight towards myself, 2 to pull myself towards a heavy enough object. So I just planted my 'anchor' on a massive concrete building and shot towards it faster than even the girl with the frog mutation could jump past the starting line.
As always the sudden influx of momentum played merry hell on all of my internal organs and gave me a nauseating sense of vertigo. Placing my anchor on the ground just in front of a nearby alleyway and ducking into a roll brought me in line of sight of three robots just at the end of the alleyway. If my memory was right all three were worth two points. Their red LED 'eyes' light up brighter as they are alerted to my presence.
As always I wish I could set up multiple anchors at the same time, one at a time would have to suffice. The two robots on the left open fire with their faux bullets while the robot on the right flails as it launches towards me, five long steps brings me out of danger of both threats.
The olive green robot I used my quirk on clips the corner of the building and simply falls apart at the seams. It makes sense they would be fragile, not everyone can break metal easily. With a quick glance up I set my anchor onto the roof above me and fling myself upwards and grab ahold of the ledge. I quickly switch my anchor to one of the remaining robots, grinning as I feel something slam into the side of the building as I scramble over the edge of the roof.
I look over the edge ready to end the last robot as thorny vines wrap around it and slam it into the ground. Briefly seeing a green haired girl move into the alleyway I call it a loss and run towards the opposite end of the rooftop ready to begin the hunt anew.
It's only twenty-six points later that I have to lean against a wall and take deep breaths to control the urge to throw up.
"Ha!"
Looking down the length of the street showcases a cavalcade of different forms of violence, the most striking being the redheaded guy destroying the robots with his (admittedly rock-like) bare hands. I spied the vine haired girl giving me and a few other worn out would-be-students concerned glances as she warred between helping us and moving on for more points. She evidently decided on the latter as she ran off.
I eventually staggered into the road and pulled as lightly as I could on a pink haired student about to be struck in the head by a robot, the force still threw him off his feet. He scraped his arms and lost a point but the alternative was a concussion or being knocked out. I thought it was the better option but going by the glare he sent me showed he thought otherwise.
Everyone stopped as the world shook, I could be excused for assuming it was an earthquake, we had about 1,500 each year. Minor as they were, this couldn't be an earthquake, it was too big, too abrupt. Given we were on the main avenue of the fake city we could see the source easily. A robot at least 16 stories tall smashed through the shell of what I had assumed to be a skyscraper, and began its trail of destruction. I decided to be somewhat intelligent and ran.
Nobody else was stupid enough to stick around as the metal Kaiju lumbered down the main road. I lagged behind the pack as a stabbing pain made itself known in my side. I really wish I had warmed up before the test started. Just as a gap between me that the other applicants formed, four different robots zoomed in front of me.
I was rather suddenly trapped between them and the zero pointer far behind me. Dodging to the right and pointing my anchor onto a building let me avoid the hail of foam cased missiles launched by the three pointer leading the group.
Two of the other robots closed the gap forming a loose circle around me, with my back against the building I pulled on the three pointer and sprinted towards the one pointer that was rapidly wheeling to meet me. I was ready to dropkick the thing when the crash of the three pointer behind made me flinch.
The one point robot took advantage of my mistake and wound up an arm to punch me in the stomach, dropping me to the floor as I threw up the lovely meal my dad had made for me that morning. The one pointer abruptly flung from my vision as a large hand batted it into the two pointer aiming its gun at me, breaking both. An orange haired girl stood over me and braced herself as she used her hands to block another hail of missiles.
She grimaced and spoke in a strained voice as she shook her hands in discomfort as the storm of rockets briefly let up. "Any ideas on how to get out of here?" Two more robots were approaching us as the zero pointer slowly made its way down the street. I took a moment to stand up and think while I spit out the acrid taste in my mouth. I had two ideas actually, one unfortunately involved abandoning the girl who just saved me so I had to go with the stupid plan.
"Move left!" I shouted as I anchored the three pointer, the only robot here that could attack from range. She thankfully listened and once again a three pointer hurled into the building behind me as we jumped away. I kept my momentum with a roll and ran straight at the zero pointer. Quickly anchoring onto the head of the zero pointer I called out.
"Catch me!" As I flew into the air I changed my anchor onto one of the two remaining robots when I was solidly between it and the zero pointer. The two point robot gave an electronic wail as it careened towards me. Just as it was to hit me I put my anchor right under the orange haired girl as she smashed the only robot left.
She quickly grabbed me as I fell right on top of her, quickly pivoting and pushing me towards the exit of the city. Casting a glance behind us I saw the zero pointer had only suffered cosmetic damage to its faceplate. Whatever it was made of, it was far stronger than the normal robots. My current partner shrunk her hands to run faster and helped bodily push me past the threshold of the city where I collapsed into an exhausted heap.
The orange haired girl stopped beside me and gave a wry smile as he took deep breaths before wrinkling her nose and giving her hands an uncomfortable glance. I looked and saw she had picked up some of my previous meal from my shirt when she caught me. I couldn't help but give a short laugh and grin at her.
"Firstly thank you for saving me, and I'm sorry about that."
She shook her head and flicked her hands a few times, flinging the refuse into some nearby bushes. Finally done she looked back at me and gave a half smile while avoiding looking at the mess on my ruined shirt.
"You're welcome, thank you for dealing with those last few robots."
No doubt she was saying that to be polite, she would not have had to deal with the villain bots if she didn't have to save me. Still I nodded and took the thanks as I closed my eyes and tried to figure out a way to deal with my shirt without taking it off in front of total strangers.
"My name is Suzume Morita. Pleased to meet you."
"Itsuka Kendo, likewise."
I stood up and nodded to her as I motioned towards the trail which would take us back to the lockers we had stored our belongings in before the test.
"I'll be heading back to deal with this, hopefully we both pass. Either way, thanks again."
Kendo gave a nod and then moved through the crowd, no doubt to find a friend of hers, or to wash her hands. It was ironically not the worst first meeting I've ever had but I was up there, hopefully I wouldn't have any more catastrophes. If I did, I would deal with it. Plus ultra.
