Sleepwalking in Novoselic!
"Zzz…"
The palace bedroom was completely quiet, save for the quiet snoring of the King and Queen of Novoselic. King Gundham lay peacefully on his side of the bed, his head cushioned by his Four Dark Devas of Destruction. So soft and still were the four hamsters that they could have easily been mistaken for plushies.
His Queen Sonia lay next to him, a woman so beautiful and eloquent that even her snores seemed like a symphony. Truly a sleeping beauty in the flesh, one could have easily mistaken the slumbering monarchs' bedroom for a scene from a Disney movie.
However, the serenity would soon be broken…for one of them, at least. Groaning, Sonia turned over and swung her legs over the side of the mattress. Getting to her feet, she smoothed out the creases in her black and purple nightgown before letting out a rather loud yawn.
Four pairs of fuzzy ears twitched, their owners' eyes fluttering awake. After a moment, they widened, any drowsy haze completely dissipated from the realization of who the serenade belonged to. They scurried off the bed and around her feet, nuzzling her soles with their noses.
Though the ticklish sensations made her giggle, they failed to awaken her. Instead, she yanked the blanket off the bed, causing her husband to shiver. The then lumbered forward like a zombie towards the door. The doorknob rattled as she clumsily fiddled with it, though the most the rattling did was cause Gundham to mumble sleepily and turn his back to her.
At last, she managed to turn the doorknob and pull the door open. With an unintelligible mutter, she shuffled out of the room and through the halls of her palace, leaving her King all alone in their bed.
Sonia skipped through the dimly lit halls of her palace, as though she were frolicking through a field of flowers. Her content humming echoed through the corridors. If any staff were actually awake, it would have served as a beautiful melody for them to listen to…and an alarm that something was seriously wrong with their reigning monarch.
But since she was the only occupant actually awake, her midnight frolic continued uninterrupted. Eventually, she came to an open window and, gripping her blanket like a parachute, leapt thorugh the opening to the outside. As she slowly descended towards the ground, her melodies traveled in the opposite direction. Lingering in the air, they flowed back in the direction from whence they came.
"Zzz…"
The hamsters, having leapt back onto the bed, nuzzled their small noses against their owner's cheeks. Gradually being roused, his eyes cracked open, and he sat up. Yawning and mumbling, he rubbed a dreary eye with his fist.
"What is it, Jum-P? Your Queen and I are…" Gundham trailed off, his eyes widening in shock as he saw the empty spot next to him where his wife usually lay. "What the…what happened to Queen Sonia?! She…"
Gundham fell silent, his own ears finally registering the sound of Sonia's voice. His muscles relaxed in slight relief before he swung his legs over the bed and got to his feet. The Four Dark Devas of Destruction quickly leapt onto his shoulder as he reached for his scarf and wrapped it around his neck.
"I don't know what possessed our Queen to rouse from her slumber, but we must find her before it is too late!" He pointed towards the open door and commanded, "Go, Mirage Golden Hawk Jum-P! Take to the skies and scout for our Queen!"
Jum-P nodded and leapt off Gundham's shoulder, scurrying out the door and down the hallway. Gundham burst into a sprint, glancing at his other three hamsters.
"Come, San-D, Maga-Z, Cham-P! We must make haste and follow Jum-P to Queen Sonia's location!"
"What is it, Jum-P? Are you saying her scent stops here?"
The hamster nodded and Gundham looked up. His eyes widened in shock at the open window, his form shaking slightly from the cold breeze and the realization of why Sonia's trail stopped at the open window.
"What the…did the demon who possessed our Queen make her jump out the window?! My dear Sonia…" Gundham gritted his teeth and clenched his fist. "If that is the case, then I sill do everything in my power to vanquish that demon and avenge-"
Gundham's eyes locked onto a frolicking Sonia down on the ground in the middle of a field of flowers. No longer feeling thoughts of revenge, Gundham let out a sigh of relief.
"At least she's unharmed. Quickly, my Four Dark Devas of Destruction! We must rush to the gardens before the demon can make our Queen do any more life-threatening stunts!"
Sonia's dream of frolicking in the gardens soon turned to reality. Fortunately for her, she had landed in a field of flowers she had personally planted. A beautiful display of color stretched as far as the eye could see, the result of her stress-relieving pastime.
An unconscious smile stretching from ear to ear, she skipped into the fields, the petals tickling her feet and eliciting slight giggles. Every so often, she would bend own to pick some sunflower seeds that she had grown, pocketing them in the blanket that she was now using as a sack to give to the Four Dark Devas of Destruction in the morning.
It was in this fever dream state that Gundham and his four Dark Devas of Destruction found her. Eyes widening in shock, he could barely keep his jaw from dropping onto the ground.
"What the…what in the nine hells is this? Is…is Queen Sonia frolicking through the gardens…in her sleep?" Gundham clenched his fist. "What matter of demon has managed to possess her into doing this?!" Gundham shook his head. "No matter, I must bring her back to our chambers so I can perform an exorcism!"
His mind set, he walked over to his wife and gently took her by the wrist. Still asleep, Sonia turned her head towards her husband.
"Sonia, it's time to go back to bed."
Shaking her head, Sonia muttered "…Gardens…Having fun…in the gardens…" Taking his other hand, she tugged him gently. "Come play with me…in the gardens…"
Gundham blushed; Sonia's whimsical fantasies always had a knack for convincing him to play along. However, he knew that he had to stand firm so he could expel whatever demon had possessed Sonia to do this while she was asleep.
"You can play in the gardens tomorrow, my queen." Gundham gently tugged her hands, causing her to stumble against his chest. "Come now, let us return to our chambers so we can go to sleep."
"…Carry me…?"
Gundham tugged his scarf over his lips to hide his blush. "…If you say so…"
Wrapping one arm around her back and sliding the other underneath her knees, he heaved her up into the air and turned around. With slightly slowed steps, he began to walk back into the warmth of the palace, where he would exorcise the demon from his beloved queen.
"Alright, we're back in our chambers, Sonia." Gundham quietly announced as he kicked the door shut behind him. "New, let us draw the magic circle so we can begin the exor…Sonia?"
Only snores greeted him. Turning his head, he sweatdropped at the sight of Sonia completely asleep in his arms. No lethargic movements, no signs of activity, just the quiet breathing of REM sleep.
"…Well…I suppose the exorcism was unnecessary…" Gundham grinned, quietly boasting, "I suppose whatever demon possessed you fled in terror at the sight of the Overlord of Ice, Gundham Tanaka!"
Resisting the urge to laugh in victory, he walked over to the bed and gently placed Sonia back on her side. After tucking her in, he crawled in next to her and wrapped his arms around her.
"…Now I can keep you close in case the demon comes back…" Gundham yawned, his eyelids growing heavy as the room became blurry.
Once they closed and he faded into the world of dreams with his queen, the Four Dark Devas of Destruction scampered around Sonia's golden blonde head. They laid down, forming a ring of protection against any future possessions that night. The four hamsters were the only ones awake in the palace, remaining ever vigilant for the sake of their queen.
