Chapter 1:
The Unexpected Adoption
The door opened. The sound of childrens filled the building. "Hey there! How may I help you today?"
"I'm here to adopt a child," said Allen. Today he has decided that he'll adopt a child.
"Wonderful! Follow me." The lady introduced him to all the kids in the orphanage. "Here's Cody."
The kid seemed to be about 9 years old, Allen thought. "Hi Cody! How's it going!" The kid said nothing and just stared right at him.
"Does he talk?" Allen said skeptically.
"Well, he's not really the talkative type." Allen wasn't interested, he didn't know what kind of kid he was looking for but he continued on. She introduced many kids, but Allen was still not interested in any of them. Some were crazy, weird and even disrespectful.
"I'm sorry sir that you didn't find any child of your interest." Allen went silent for a second. But quickly answered before making him sound like a pedophile.
"That's alright." As he was about to leave the building. At the side of his eye he saw a little girl whose hair was a beautiful golden brown and had the most beautiful crimson red eyes he'd ever seen.
"Pardon me."
"Yes?"
"Who's that child over there sitting by the little desk over there?"
"Oh, I almost forgot about her." Allen walked to the little young girl, she looked to be about 1 to 2 years old.
"Hey there little one!" The little girl didn't say a word. "What's your name?" Slowly she turned her around.
"H-hi. My name is Ruby," she squeaked.
Her little soft voice was so cute, too cute to ignore. She was adorable! Her eyes glimmered and her hair matched her eyes wonderfully. She had caught his heart in a blink of an eye. She is the one, she just has to be! He had thought.
"I'll adopt her!"
"Amazing!". Come with me." She looked back at her.
And he wasn't ready for what was about to happen. Ruby had tilted her head and had smiled beautifully. She was so adorable! It was like he was about to faint. He just stared at her smiling.
"Uh sir?" He was too stunned to speak. "Sir?"
"Oh sorry, where were we?" he said, while rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly,
They walked into a room for him to sign some documents. It hadn't taken a while for him to finish. Once he finished he went to find Ruby. Who was already ready. Ruby was wearing an adorable outfit that had Allen smiling once again. She wore a little red robe with a red headband with a bow on top matching her robe with little red shoes. He opened the door and left with his new child. They walked side by side holding hands. Ruby Looked back at the orphanage and smiled.
"Let's go shall we!" Ruby had only nodded and smiled.
They had walked for quite awhile now. "Phew! I'm getting tired and hungry."
"How about a little break?"
They walked to the nearest gas station. "Alright, here we are!" Ruby looked confused.
"Uhm w-what's this place?" Ruby said quietly.
"Oh, it's a gas station. It's a pit stop if ever you're in need of food, different supplies or gas for vehicles. Ruby still looked confused.
"Let's just see for ourselves won't we." They entered the gas station. It looked very prestined. It definitely looked better than other gas stations Allen had been to.
"This is a gas station." Ruby's eyes looked amazed. Allen chuckled. He set Ruby down. Just then, he noticed something red and pointy sticking out of her head. He was confused.
"Ruby, what is that on your-"
"Nevermind…" It was too late, she had already run into the aisles.
"I must be seeing things. That was probably nothing." he thought. They went around picking things out. Allen had already picked quite some stuff. As he looked at Ruby. She hadn't chosen anything. It's probably because she hadn't seen a place like this before. The only thing she had in her hands was a pack of gummy bears. That she found cute.
"Oooooo." Ruby walked away.
"Okay then, let's see what we've picked out-"
"Uh Ruby?
"Where are you?" Alex has lost Ruby.
"Ruby?" He began to worry. He started to look around the store. It hadn't been long till he found her standing still.
"There you are!" Ruby had been staring at something. She began to point at it. Looking desperately. He was confused, until he had looked to see what she was pointing at.
"Ohhh, you want a slushie." Ruby began to jump up and down, nodding excitedly.
"Okay then, which flavor would you like?" Again Ruby looked confused.
"Let's make this easier, what color is your favorite?"
"Red!" She answered joyfully.
"Really? Me too!" He took a small slushie cup and began to fill it with some cherry slushie. At the same, he decided to get himself as well.
"Let's go pay for our things." They walked to the cashier. Ruby held her slushie in her hands
"Hey there! How may I help you today?"
"Just buying some things you know."
"Can't be walking on an empty stomach." Allen chuckled as he placed the items on the counter.
"Umph."
'U-ugh" Allen wondered what that sound was. He looked around. It had been Ruby. She couldn't reach the counter to place her slushie.
"Hi there! Oh how adorable! Let me help you with that." Said the cashier.
"Th-thank you." Ruby said.
"You're welcome! Also would you mind telling me who this young handsome man you're with is?
"That's m-my papa!" she said, smiling adorably. Allen was hearing it well.
"She could've have said that-"
"T-that my papa!" Ruby said once again. Allen was shocked and was happier than ever. He had thought she'd say something else. But she had actually called me papa!
"Wow! That's very nice!" said the cashier. The lady scanned their items and they left.
"So, where did you learn to say papa?"
"I don't know." she said. Allen patted her head softly as he smiled.
"Well then let's get going before it gets dark. They walked for a little more and had reached home. Allen's house wasn't very far off from the orphanage.
"Here we are!"
"Welcome to my castle!" He said jokingly. The house had a ruby red roofing with dirty brown-ish sides and dark black windows. With a little garden at the front right next to an ocean blue van. Allen could've driven to the orphanage but felt like walking instead.
"That's a c-castle?" Ruby said haptically.
"No silly! I'm just joking with you." he chuckled. Ruby still looked like she believed him.
"Let's go in." They approached the doors and he set her down to get his keys. He inserted the key and opened the doors. The inside looked very nice. It was very tidy and neat. It had a cabin vibe to it. With oak brown flooring, with dark brown walls. Most of the furniture fit the color scheme of the house.
"This is it!" Ruby slowly stepped inside the house with her tiny little feet. The house looked very enormous compared to her. She was shocked. She couldn't move!
"Wow!" said Ruby. She began to run around to look around at the place.
"Okay now, be careful." She continued to look around for quite a while. All he can do is sit down and watch her run rapidly around the place. Soon enough he had lost sight of her.
"Oh come on. Not again!" He began to look around calling for her.
"Ruby! Where are you?" It took him a while to find her, but soon enough he had found her sitting down in a closet half asleep. He chuckled.
"All that running around got you tired hey. Let's get you to bed."
"Hmm." Ruby yawned softly. Allen carried Ruby to her bedroom and changed her into her new pjs, that Allen had bought recently. As he changed her he noticed a red tail with a pointy tip.
"HUH?" He was surprised.
"This can't be right."
"Am I dreaming?"
"Maybe I just need some sleep. My head is messed up right now." He placed her down on her bed. And waited to stand right up, but Ruby wasn't letting go of his neck. He tried to take her hands off his neck. But she just wasn't letting go. He tried different ways, but it was still no good.
"This kid's grip is deadly," he thought.
"Hmm, s-stayyy." Ruby said, whispering tiredly.
"Fine," said Allen. He gets himself onto the bed and laid there. What a why to end the day he thought.
"Welp, I guess this is the start of the next chapter of my life. He thought. This may be harder than I thought. They both slowly fell into slumber…
The morning sun shone through the window. Birds tweeted as they flew into the sky. Sounds of cars driving by and the sound of people walking and talking can be heard.
"Morning already?" Allen began to stretch as he sat up.
"Ughh, I'm so tired." He turns around to see no one. Ruby had vanished once again.
"Aww, not this early in the morning!" Allen stands up and leaves the room to find Ruby.
"Where could've this kid gone?" He suddenly hears the sound of a toilet flush. The door opens and Ruby walks out the door and turns to stare right at Allen. She tilts her head and says
"Gud murning!" Ruby says happily.
"There you are!" Allen chuckles. Ruby slowly walks to him. And raises her arms indicating she wants to be carried
"Carry carry!" said Ruby.
"Okay kiddo." Said Allen.
"Let's get you changed." They walk back into her room. He placed Ruby onto her bed and went to check the drawers.
"Let's see what we've got here." He checks the drawers only to see nothing.
"Well that's a problem." Allen hadn't bought clothes for Ruby. He wasn't ready at all.
"The only clothes you have to change into are the clothes you had worn yesterday." Ruby tilts her head in confusion.
"Yes, I know. What will you wear for today now."
"We'll go shopping today, but for now let's get you wearing your clothes from yesterday. He begins to change Ruby's outfit for the day. Until he sees the red tail once again.
"Okay, I am actually not dreaming right now! I actually saw a tail!"
"I'm looking at a tail right now."
"I think I'm going to faint-"
"Thud." Allen has fainted frantically. Ruby slowly turns to see him laying down on the floor.
"P-papa?" Ruby begins to move his head back and forth to try and wake him up. It hadn't been long till he had regained consciousness once again. It had only be a few minutes
"Ughh. My head." Allen sat back up just to see Ruby laying on his belly.
"H-hi!" Ruby said.
"Hey there kiddo."
"Sorry for what had happened." He carried Ruby to finish dressing her up and they both went to the kitchen. He began to cook some pancakes.
"Do you like pancakes?
"What are those?" Looks like there are many things she doesn't know, thought Allen. Allen put some on a plate and topped it off with syrup, butter and strawberries.
"Here, try it." Ruby looked unsure about it. But she still went in for a bite.
"Um, munch, munch, munch." Ruby's eyes began to widen up.
"YUMMY!" Ruby enjoyed the food! She began to do a little dance.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah yummy!" As she danced something else had happened. Wings had begun to appear right behind her back!
"AHHHHHHH!" Allen said, screaming. Ruby turned and said nothing. She just smiled.
"I think I'm going to faint-"
"Thud." Once again Allen had fainted. Ruby was too focused on her pancakes to realize he had fainted once again.
"Yummy, yummy, yummy pancakes!" Soon enough she finished her plate.
"Pwease." At that moment she had finally realized that Allen had fainted. She gets off her chair and walks to Allen.
"Wake up!" She began to shake his whole body over and over again. Till finally.
"Ughh, my head." He opened his eyes to see Ruby standing up with her wings behind her back.
"Ok ok ok, I'm not dreaming that is real." Allen stood up and just went with it.
"Ruby, what is that behind your back?" Ruby looked confused while she tilted her head.
She must be some kind of demon child or something.
"Wait, let me just see something." Allen stood right up and walked to Ruby. He pushed some hair from her head only to reveal the red horns he had seen yesterday.
"So, it looks like you are some kind of demon kid right?" Ruby still looked confused. She really doesn't know many things about herself as well. Allen thought. Ruby raised her hand with a plate.
"More pwease!"
"Alrighty." She passes her plate for Allen to add more.
"There you go!"
"Thank you." Allen walks into his room.
"Ok so I adopted a kid."
"That turns out to be a little demon?"
"Now that is strange, she looked like a normal adorable cute child."
"This is very interesting and amazing now that I think of this."
"Oh well, I think I can handle this, but it's going to take some time for me to get used to this." He walks back into the kitchen accepting the fact that his daughter is a demon child.
"How's it going!" He saw Ruby sitting down looking very sluggish
"I'm full…"
"My bwelly hurts…"
"Owww, ugh." It looks like Ruby had taken some more pancakes while Allen was gone.
"Oh poor thing, you have eaten too many pancakes." Ruby began to nod slowly.
"Let's get you to bed for a little nap shall we?" Allen carried Ruby back to her bedroom. As he carried her, her wings began to cover his face making it hard to see. Allen slowly moved the wings and placed her in bed. This time she didn't hang on to his neck and just slept peacefully. Giving the time for Allen to catch up on some work and do other things.
"Alright, let's get some work done."
"Ring, ring, ring!" Allen calls his friend from work to get some news on what's going on.
"Hey man!"
"How's it going!" said Allen.
"Nothing much. Just catching up on some work." said the man.
"You gotta get your ass over here by the way."
"It's only been two days!" Allen works for a large company.
"I just adopted a child like I told you beforehand."
"It's been quite lovely so far.
"You can't always be staying at home."
"Yeah yeah, I know."
"What about signing your kid up for a daycare." Allen wouldn't have thought of that if his friend hadn't given him the idea.
"Great idea!"
"But I still aren't sure if she's ready yet.
"I've only known the kid for two days, man."
"Well it wouldn't hurt to try." said the man on the phone.
"Alright then I'll give it a try." They continue to talk some more about work.
"P-papa." Ruby had already woken up from her slumber.
"Hey man, I'll talk to you later. Cya."
"Bye." Allen hangs up the phone.
"Hey kiddo, how was your sleep? Ruby has slept for 1 hour, but for Allen that 1 hour felt like a long time.
"It was ok." she said tiredly.
"Can I huv sum pancakes?" She smiled.
"Oh, not right now silly." He chuckled and smiled.
"Anyways would you like to come with me?"
"Ok!" They walked out the door leaving their house and entered their car.
"W-what is this?"
"It's a car, you can use it to go to places that are far away." She looked confused. He placed Ruby onto her booster seat Allen had prepared.
"Anyways let's get going." He inserts the keys inside the car and the engines begin to make noise instantly scaring Ruby."
"Ah!" Ruby said, yelling." Allen chuckled. They began to drive to some place. It wasn't until then they had already arrived.
"We're here!" He exits the building to go and grab Ruby from the back seat.
"W-what's this place?" She asks nervously.
"You'll find out once we get inside."
"You don't have to be scared, I'll be right by your side." Allen smiled. They both walk up to the building and enter.
"Hey there!"
"How may I help you today?" Said the lady.
"I'm here to sign my daughter up for daycare." Allen was still a little unsure if it was the right time to sign her daughter up for adoption.
"Alright then," said the lady.
"Come right over here." Allen places Ruby down on a seat by the entrance. Allen follows the lady to sign some documents.
"W-what is this place?" Ruby says. To the right she sees a door that has a window that you can look through. Ruby struggles to get off her seat.
"Umph." She walks to the door and sees a magical place! Beautiful colors spread out across the room. Children played with toys joyfully.
"WOW!" Ruby says shockley.
"I t-think papa is going to let me play here!" A kid sees Ruby and waves. Ruby waves as well and walks away.
"I wuv my papa."
"I'm gonna have so munch pun here!" Allen comes back.
"Where do you think you're going kiddo?" Allen picks Ruby up and exits the daycare center
"Have a good day!"
"You too!" said Allen.
"Alright, I don't know how you'll feel about this but tomorrow you'll start daycare!"
"Yay!" Ruby says excitedly. Allen was confused, he thought Ruby didn't know what it was.
"Do you know what a daycare is?"
"Nope, but it looks fun!" Allen laughs.
"But before you go to daycare tomorrow."
"We must first go shopping." Ruby looked confused as she always looked when she wasn't familiar with something. They enter the car and drive straight to the mall. It was a 5 to 20 minute drive.
"We're here!" Allen takes Ruby out of the back seat and they both enter the mall.
"This pwace is big!" Ruby said, amazed.
"Yes I know." Allen chuckled. They begin to walk through the mall. On their way to the children's clothing shop.
"There so munch people!" Allen smiled. They stopped and stared at a store that said.
"Kids with Fashion."
"Alright let's go choose some clothes for you." Ruby nodded. They both walk into the store and Allen places Ruby down and she begins to run like always. He follows her through the store when he hits a turn and turns to see that Ruby's tail was showing!
"O-m-g!" Allen runs for Ruby and immediately hides her tail.
"Phew." Ruby turned around looking confused.
"W-what happened?" Ruby said.
"N-nothing. Let's go shopping." They looked around, finding multiple pieces of clothing that looked adorable.
"I wat this won!" Ruby took out a cute giraffe onesie.
"Let's see you wear it." He brought her to the changing room and changed her into the onesie. She begins to twirl around in her onesie and does many different cute poses.
"Nya!"
"Cheese!"
"NANANA!" Allen couldn't take the cuteness.
"Let's take it." They walk up to the cashier and place all the things they had picked out. Once they finished they left the store.
"Well, that was nice, wasn't it?" Allen said with Ruby on his shoulders.
"I wuved it-" RIght before they were about to exit the store Ruby had spotted some popcorn!
"Ooooo!"
"I want sum!"
"Hmm."
"Alright, it will be our little snack." They walk up to the store. The store said "Pop the pop!"
"Heya!"
"Hey, may I get a regula-"
"Rainbow popcorn!" Ruby said excitedly. Tapping Allen's back at the same time.
"Oh uh, may I get the rainbow colored popcorn."
"Yes, definitely."
"What size?"
"Medium please."
"Definitely."
"That will be 4.50$." Allen pays the cashier and the cashier hands them the popcorn. They walk away and leave the mall. As they leave the mall Ruby reaches in and takes some popcorn.
"Am, munch, munch!" Ruby went silent. Suddenly she yells.
"YUMMYYYYY!" Allen tries it as well.
"It isn't as bad as I expected. He chuckles.
"It's getting late, we should get going. They enter the car and return home.
"Alright let's get some dinner won't we." Allen cooks some spaghetti which Ruby loved.
"Slurrp!" Ruby slurped loudly.
"I'm finished!" Ruby's face was covered in spaghetti sauce. Allen laughs hysterically. Allen takes their plates and brings them to sink. After Allen goes to change Ruby into her pjs.
"Ok let's put this hand into this sleeve-"
"I don't want that wonnn!" said Ruby angrily.
"I want g-raffe!"
"Ok ok." Allen chuckled. He puts her into her onesie and sets her onto her bed.
"Good night!"
"Gud night papa." Allen closes the light and is about to leave the room when Ruby yells.
"I can't sweep!"
"You sure?" Allen says, poking his head from the door. Ruby nodded.
"Alright then." Allen quickly thought of reading her a story. Allen goes to search for a book.
"Oh man, I can't find any children's books."
"I wasn't prepared at all." Allen says, whining a little. Until he finds one of his old books.
"Hmm, this might work."
"Alright Ruby I found a book." He goes to lay right beside Ruby.
"This book is called "The quest for a new life." He begins to read. They read for a while.
"Oh the good part is about to come." Allen thought. But as he turns to look at Ruby. She had already fallen asleep.
"Looks like the story was so boring for her she had fallen asleep." Allen smiled. He slowly gets off the bed and leaves the room, shutting the door quietly.
"Phew."
"Today was a busy day. I'm tired."
"It's about time I get some sleep." Allen goes to his bedroom and prepares for bed.
"Finally sleep!" He goes to his bed and checks his phone and reads a bit.
"I think that's enough for today." He places his book down.
"The book reads."
"The guide to children."
"Sighh." Allen says tiredly. He closes his eyes and slowly doses off.
"Tomorrow is going to be a busy day once again." He thought.
