"Come on out Cyndaquil!" Ash called out.
"Marshtomp I choose you!" Brendan said.
We find our hero's on the path to Cerulean City, the closest location to Brendan's first Frontier challenger in the meantime they are taking some time for specialized training.
"Cyndaquil use Smokescreen!"
"Marshtomp use Muddy Water!"
Marshtomp shot forward, water pushing from his body as it doused the smoke with ease.
"Cyndaquil use Flamethrower!"
"Marshtomp use Mud Shot!"
Flames shot out from Cyndaquil, bursting through the mud and engulfing Marshtomp.
"Cyndaquil use Quick Attack!"
"Marshtomp use Rollout!"
Marshtomp ducked into a ball, launching forward as Cyndaquil sped out of the way.
"Marshtomp use Rollout again!"
"Cyndaquil stop him with Flamethrower!"
Cyndaquil leapt into the air sending out a stream of flames directly in the path of Marshtomp's attack as he dug into the ground.
"Marshtomp use Muddy Water to end this!"
"Cyndaquil use Swift!"
Marshtomp sent out a wave of water, crashing into Cyndaquil, sending the fire type backwards as he sent out an array of stars, blasting into Marshtomp.
"Man, it's been a while since we've fought a fire type strong enough to hold up against that attack." Brendan commented, as he checked on Marshtomp. "It's been too long since we had any training like this. How's Cyndaquil holding up?"
"Cynda." Cyndaquil said, strongly standing back up.
"Looks like hes doing fine. It will take more than a water attack to keep him down." Ash commented.
"So Ash, how are we getting to Cerulean anyways?" Wally asked, setting down some cooking utensils.
"Well there's a backroad we can take to skip a lot of the quote on quote main path, but we still have to go through Mt. Moon." Ash said, unfolding a map.
"Are we missing anything by skipping the main path though?" Brendan asked.
"Well, it's mostly a time saver, but we will be missing Pewter City." Ash commented. "Remember my friend Brock, well he's the gym leader there. And as much as I'd like to stop and see him, he's not in town right now so there's nothing there for us."
"What about Misty? Didn't you say she was a gym leader too?" Wally asked.
"Yeah, we're actually going to see her on the way." Ash said. "Her gym is in Cerulean City, and I know she'd be really excited to see Marshtomp and Milotic again."
"What about your first contest?" Brendan wondered out loud.
"There's one coming up in Cerulean as well." Ash commented. "If we're still in town, I'd like to compete."
"If?" Brendan said with a laugh. "From what Scott was saying, this isn't a season like it is with gym challenges. The Battle Frontier runs constantly. So we're in no rush to get there or leave unless you are on a time crunch for a contest."
"Look, there is one stop I do want to make, once I find a way for us to get there." Ash said. "It's not really on the map, but apparently the scenery is amazing, and plenty of rare Pokemon are there."
"Yeah, sounds like fun." Brendan admitted. "You know you don't have to push us all that much to get us to agree to something like that."
"Okay, okay. I'll look into it while in towns and see if I can ever get us tickets." Ash said.
'I'M TELLING YOU THAT IS A MISTAKE, YOU CANNOT CURE ME!' The primal force shouted.
'Just stop screaming, you haven't exactly given me a good argument to keep you.' Ash thought back. 'Now just stay quiet for once.'
"Everything okay Ash?" Wally asked.
"Yeah sorry, just lost in thought for a second there." Ash said, shaking his head. "Did you say something?"
"Well, we were wondering about Mt. Moon, and if there are any rare Pokemon in there?" Wally asked.
"Oh, well not too many." Ash admitted. "There is a small chance of finding Clefairy every now and then, but for the most part you won't find rare Pokemon in there."
"Oh, okay." Wally said. "Still would be cool if we saw any rare Pokemon."
"Don't worry, Kanto is a big region, full of all sorts of Pokemon." Ash assured. "You won't be able to go long without seeing too many rare Pokemon. One's you'd never even seen back in Hoenn."
"I'll be the judge of that." Brendan said with a smirk. "Now come on, I want to go another round of training before it gets too late."
"Alright then, you asked for it." Wally said. "Cacturne come out!"
"Not the opponent I was expecting, or the trainer, but I'll accept it anyways." Brendan said. "Come on out Shiftry!"
"Gro." Grovyle said in curiosity from a distance.
"Shiftry use Bullet Seed!"
"Cacturne use Needle Arm!"
Cacturne launched forward, spinning himself at Shiftry whacking the other grass type several times as the seeds bounced off of his thorny hide.
"Shiftry use Razor Wind!"
"Cacturne use Pin Missile!"
Cacturne flung his arms forward, unleashing a flurry of needles at Shiftry as the larger grass type waved his fans stopping the opposing attack.
"Cacturne use Sandstorm!"
"Shiftry use Feint Attack!"
Sand whipped up from the ground, obscuring the battle as the two Pokemon collided.
"After watching all of our battles, Wally has become a strong trainer in his own right." Ash smirked. "Don't worry Grovyle, you'll get your turn too, those two won't keep you out of the fun for long."
"Shiftry use Razor Wind!"
"Cacturne use Needle Arm!"
Shiftry flapped his fans, dispersing the sand and sending Cacturne spinning in the opposite direction.
"Now finish it with Bullet Seed!"
"Use Pin Missile!"
Needles and seeds collided with each other, tinging off of each other until there was a pile of both of them.
"Cacturne, show him our new move! Use Drain Punch!"
"New move?" Brenda asked in shock as Shiftry was launched back from the attack.
"Cac! Cac! Cacturne!" Cacturne said, flexing his arms, readying another attack.
"Gro!" Grovyle interrupted, throwing his twig in front of the attack.
"Grovyle, are you sure?" Ash asked.
"Gro. Vyle." Grovyle said, picking his twig back up.
"Cacturne use Pin Missile!"
"Grovyle use Dig!"
Grovyle dug beneath the ground as needles shot out over where the hole now is.
"Cacturne ready a Drain Punch in one arm, and a Needle Arm in the other." Wally called out.
"Grovyle use Fury Cutter!"
Grovyle leapt out of the ground, the leaf on top of his head, a bright green as he struck Cacturne from above.
"Gro." Grovyle said, standing up calmly, before offering a hand to Cacturne.
"Cac." Cacturne said with a smirk, taking the offer.
"Shift!" Shiftry said with a smile.
"Even with their time apart, these three are still the best of friends and rivals." Brendan said. "Looks like that will never change."

@SaneDimentio
I know there was more I could have done, but I simply wasn't happy with how I had written the character. Much like the last time I wrote out a character, all the way back in Trap Ash part 2 with Goh, Flannery isn't gone for good, she will return just not in a main character style.
