Chapter 2: What to do?

The goblin king perched on top of his throne and spun a crystal on his fingertip as if he were a basketball player.

"Could it be she actually likes this boy?!" he cried incredulously.

The goblins that littered the throne room floor shrugged noncommittedly. Jareth had been watching Sarah all week. Sarah had figured she should talk to Tom more, since they would be going out on the weekend. Sarah didn't realize they had so many classes together; they saw each other in homeroom, third period, fifth period, and ninth period. Sarah still couldn't bring herself to sit at his lunch table; it was too soon to make such a big move. Still, she found that talking to him wasn't so bad. To her surprise, he was actually interested in her interests, and he listened earnestly when she talked about drama and storytelling at the elementary school.

"BAH!" cried Jareth as he threw the crystal across the room. It nailed a goblin with dark skin straight in the muzzle. Rather than clobber the poor beast, the crystal popped like a bubble, which elicited cackles of glee from the surrounding goblins. As unhappy as Jareth was, that's how happy Irene was.

"A date?!" she cried Friday evening when Sarah told her the news. "With a boy?"

"As far as a know," Sarah quipped with a smile.

"Well, how exciting! Your first date. Are you nervous? Do you have something to wear? We can go shopping if not. Now, I don't know if your father ever spoke to you about…certain things…"

Irene yammered on the entire evening and found a way to bring it into dinnertime conversation the whole week. Sarah found it annoying at first, but figured it was nice that Irene took an interest in her life at all; she wasn't obligated to, but she cared anyway—even if she cared about something as inconsequential as a date. Saturday rolled around, and Tom picked her up from her house at quarter to six. Tom looked twice as handsome when he cleaned up; a burgundy button-up shirt was paired with navy blue slacks. His normally wild curls had been tamed with gel and hung playfully across his brow. Sarah and Irene had squabbled over what Sarah would wear, but in the end, Sarah had won. She sported a pink, sleeveless turtleneck matched with a white skirt. Rather than go bare-legged, she chose a pair of brown tights that were lightweight enough to be breathable. Irene had said Sarah should try and wear something more "grown up" and not so "sweet," but, Sarah wanted to show up to the date as herself. She wore one-inch black heels and her gold bracelets, earrings, and a chain belt made a statement; she didn't know why Irene was making such a fuss. She felt confident and even tucked her hair up into a half-bun.

The drive to dinner had been awkward, but the conversation flowed once food was served. Sarah was again surprised when she actually enjoyed herself; Tom could make her laugh. He was quite the kidder—maybe too much of a kidder. But, Sarah didn't want to focus on that now; she just wanted to have a nice time. If he wasn't the love of her life, at least she had one date under her belt to satisfy the urgings of her stepmother. Sarah didn't want to hold hands yet, but Tom still put his arm around her when they walked to his car. As they left the parking lot, Sarah noticed Tom was unusually quiet. She tried to talk about dinner or even their homework for the next week, but her date would just grunt or nod, his mind obviously on something else. Sarah wondered if she had offended him in some way. Was it something she said?

They couldn't have been more than two minutes from her house, when Tom pulled the car over on the side of the road. As the car rolled to a stop in the dimly lit street, Sarah felt her pulse start to quicken.

What was happening?

Tom turned towards her with a look of expectancy. He said nothing.

"I had a nice time, Tom," Sarah said, in hopes that being nice would break the awkward silence. Nothing.

"Tom, why are we stopped?"

"I had a nice time too, Sarah." Tom slipped his hand onto her thigh. "A really nice time."

Sarah moved her leg out of his reach. "Tom, I really should be getting home now." He just stared. "I said I want to go home!"

"Relax, Sarah. Relax. Can't have my girl freaking out now."

His girl?

He leaned towards her.

"Wait!" Sarah threw up her hand to block his advance; he brushed it aside and opened his mouth to say something.

"CroOoak!"

Tom froze. He leaned back into his seat and cleared his throat, pounding his fist against his chest.

"Crrrroak."

His eyes were wide in confusion. He turned to Sarah again, his eyes now wider in fear—no wait, they were practically bulging from his head. His eyes grew and his head shrunk, and soon his whole body was shrinking. Sarah was frozen in fear. Tom disappeared completely and his clothes slumped pathetically onto the driver seat. Where was Tom?

Something was moving underneath Tom's shirt, but Tom himself was nowhere to be seen.

"T-T-Tom?" stuttered Sarah. Something moved again. Sarah gulped and braced herself. She grabbed the shirt and threw it into the back of the car.

On the seat before her sat a bulbous, ugly toad.

"CROAK!"

Sarah shot up in bed and screamed. She was in her room? The scream died in her throat and she gulped large draughts of air, her chest heaving.

It was just a bad dream.

Wait, no, she had gone on a date. Hadn't she? She and Tom had been talking all week, and there was a dinner, and—

"Saraaaah, breakfast is ready," called Irene. Sarah rose from bed tentatively. Was it Saturday? It must be Saturday. The date was today, and she had just had a bad dream. Sarah went downstairs and straight to the kitchen and dining area of the home to find her father, Robert, chuckling at the Sunday Funnies in the paper. It was Sunday.

Sarah sat down at the table, unsure of what else to do.

"Irene, Dad. My date…Tom—"

"Got sick, honey, I know," Irene finished her sentence.

"What? No, no that's not what happened. He—"

"Sarah, he wasn't faking it. I know you might have some insecurities that he bailed on you, but his parents called; he really was sick," said her father without looking up from the paper.

"No. No, you're not listening. Tom turned into a toad."

Even Toby stopped smashing his fists in his pancakes to look up at Sarah. They all stared at her, causing a flush to creep up her neck. Irene began to laugh.

"Sarah, you told us the date went so well! You just had a stress dream is all."

"No, it's true! I—"

"I was nervous for my first date too," patronized Irene, turning back to the stove to flip more pancakes. Sarah's pulse quickened; they didn't believe her.

"But he…he croaked."

"Laryngitis, dear. I hear it's going around the schools," chimed Robert, once more engrossed in the Sunday paper. No, this couldn't be happening. Sarah knew Tom had turned into a toad. She heard it. She saw it. This was magic.

And there was only one person who would have a problem with her dating. One being who would dare interfere in her life so intimately. The Goblin King.

Images and memories came flooding into her mind once more. After growing apart from her friends and the Labyrinth, Sarah had spent the past several months trying to find her way back to them all. She remembered now, she remembered Hoggle and Sir Didymus and Ludo and even Ambrosius looking out at her from the mirror. She remembered their long chats in the evenings she remembered. What she didn't remember was why they had lost contact in the first place. It seemed like they had just…grown apart.

"It must be his doing," she thought to herself. She excused herself without eating a single pancake from her plate. The magic she had witnessed the night before was the triggering event that took her so-called "dreams" and turned them into memory. It was all clear now. The past months had waged an inner war within her, one between wanting to forget and wanting to remember. Losing her appetite to eat her breakfast, Sarah places her utensils down and goes back upstairs to her bed room not bothering to see the puzzled and confused looks on both her stepmother's and father's faces. Thinking that Sarah is having one of her phases or it's a teenager thing they just shrug it off. Irene decides to cover up Sarah's leftover breakfast to see if she would be hungry later. Going back about her work in the kitchen along with her husband Robert her continues to read the paper while taking a sip of his coffee. Toby continues to go back to eating his pancakes playing around with his food making more of a mess.

Now in her bedroom closing the door behind her Sarah sat in front of her mirror full of rage. Was this going to be her life now? Was every date going to be interrupted by him? Would every romantic interest of hers be turned into a toad or worse?

Jareth was a sore loser. Sarah had to know why he was doing this. Was it revenge?

"Hoggle?" she called into the mirror. Silence.

"Hoggle? Hoggle! Sir Didymus or Ludo, please, answer me. I'm here now." Still, silence.

"I need you," she whispered. She hung her head in defeat. They must think she had forgotten them. Maybe they had forgotten her.

"No," Sarah said out loud. She looked up. They were her friends. They would never forget her. This must be his doing.

Back in the castle at the center of the labyrinth, the throne room was uncharacteristically quiet. Neither a single goblin nor chicken littered the stony floor. The goblin king sat alone, waving a crystal back and forth before his face. He flipped his wrist this way and that, watching the crystal dance, watching his Sarah call out to her friends.

"Goblin king, what have you done?!" he heard her cry into her mirror.

"I'm so glad you asked," he replied slyly. In his left hand was an envelope. With his right hand, he twisted and flipped the crystal. As he held the envelope before him, the little sphere floated up into the air. It floated above the envelope, and pop! Both crystal and envelope had disappeared.

"You, Sarah, are cordially invited to my kingdom once more. Do hurry. We can hardly wait to see you again…" The goblin king laughed a slow, deep laugh that had as much mirth as an arctic snowman in January.

Back in Sarah's bedroom, the outline of an envelope appeared in her mirror.

"Wha—" she started, but now the envelope was peeling itself from the mirror. It hovered gently above her vanity. "It must be my friends," Sarah said with a faint smile of relief as the letter floated towards her; they had replied.

Were her friends alright? Did they miss her as much as she missed them? Had Jareth intervened and kept them from each other? There were so many questions that needed answering; she held the envelope with bated breath.

(AN) Author's Notes: I hope everyone liked chapter two. I have my own ideas and intentions of how good old Sarah Williams will be returning back to the Labyrinth and Underground but make no mistake it will not be the iconic words I wish lol ^^ we all know what happened when Sarah said those dreadful words and poor baby Toby got whisked away by its king and the goblins. It seemed to be a one-way ticket with no return if the person in question cannot reach the centre of the labyrinth by the time the clock strikes thirteen.

I could not picture Jareth just idly watching Sarah while she proceeded with her first date and not interfering somehow. I mean he did show hints of jealousy when he talked to Hoggle back in the movie belittling his friendship with Sarah. I could clearly see he was not happy a how deep the relationship of friendship the dwarf had with Sarah.
Given how Jareth magically can reappear in her world or life in the manga I don't think there's too much of a magic restriction depending on what it is. But probably like with all his kind when someone does look up about the history of Fae or the fair folk that usually disguise themselves as animals. Although I did come across a free link to the Practical visitor's guide to the Labyrinth if anyone wants the link do kindly message me and I can give you or we can exchange email addresses if you feel confident and I can send it to you if you would like. Now according to the Practical visitor's guide when the Goblin King goes to the human realm he can only go in the form of a white barn owl. And according to what else it says he can only appear as such which wouldn't be too surprising. Despite the manga not being part of the Canon universe of the movie, it seems in the movie that like with many of his kind (Fae) or with few the Goblin King has certain restrictions put on him where he can't just magically show up in any form he likes but I guess that depends on the perspective and how fans interpret and see his magical abilities.

Fae like Jareth probably can't fully physically manifest in their true humanoid form in the other realm whether it takes a toll on their body or requires more magic who knows? I do know this is the Goblin King if he does have affections for Sarah is all the fans are stating giving all the loose hints that were given throughout the movie and the spoilers from the movie's novel. I can't exactly picture him not taking action and interfering with any date or love interest that might be having their eyes on Sarah. Although it was never stated as to what exactly Jareth is in the movie despite looking human. A lot of fans have pointed out that (he) Jareth has characteristics similar to that of a fae or the fair Folk. I would recommend people look it up on what (fae) are on Wikipedia are on their search engine.

Do your homework on the fair folk you'll see where I'm probably going to take a few historical mythological tidbits from. I'm not the first writer to do this with a labyrinth fan fiction but I know I won't be the last I would like to get certain things accurate and straight when it comes to adding them fictitiously to a fanfic story of mine but it involves the goblin king's roots none the less. Some of these points are made true if you guys have watched the 1986 movie enough. I'm pretty sure there are a lot of other people besides me that would agree with this statement. Given his magical power and what he does and his behavior, it's not exactly something far off to say that Jareth is some type of fae. He doesn't exactly look like his goblin's subjects and given the history that was given about him in the manga which I accepted more wholeheartedly than the horrible comic issue Labyrinth: Coronation.

It would make sense in my story and point of view. In all honesty, when it came to thinking about Jareth's history and where he's from what was shown in the manga was more believable and acceptable it was quite obvious to many fans before the manga came out that Jareth has no characteristics or similarities to his subjects of being a goblin. Given his magical abilities and attitude, he didn't behave much like them either. Since there's been a lot of mystery about who or what is the Goblin King. I have a lot of juicy things that I have come up with to explain in my own story about who he is where he comes from and so on that not even probably the Goblin King himself knows. I want to keep that mysterious air and unknown about him because that's how he was created. I like how his character was created. I don't think we could have it any other way. Even though David Bowie wasn't the first choice to be cast as the Goblin King. I'm glad he was and that Jim Henson and his others were able to convince him to stay on the project when the film was being done because there was a point in the film when he was thinking of backing out. If we didn't have David Bowie playing the Goblin King I don't think we would have musical numbers such as Underground, Magic Dance, As the World falls down, or Within You and so on.

The conversation that they had was quite obvious from the tone that the king had when he spoke to Hoggle. Jareth was belittling and mocking the friendship that Hoggle and Sarah had. The goblin king tried to make Hoggl feel more insecure and inadequate. Jareth was trying to make the dwarf believe that Sarah probably didn't consider their friendship strong and worth it. But when he sees that was still resisting the dwarf on wanting to give the peach once again the king brought up the subject of dipping him in the Bog of Eternal stench before he could even blink! And of course, before Hoggle left to carry on his duty remember what else the king said he warned? If Sarah should ever kiss him, he would turn him into a prince. Prince of the land of stench. Obviously quite old-fashioned bullying tactics if you ask me. And it just goes to show you how jealous the goblin king was and true to his word when Sarah did give a kiss to Hoggle (more than one mind you) they almost did get both dunked in the head first and deep in the Bog of eternal stench. Whether or not the king intended just to have Hoggle or Sarah or both of them really get dipped in it or if it was just some cheap threat or intimidation it was a lucky thing that Hoggle caught something to prevent him from fully being submerged into that awful stinky smelling bog.

In my own opinion, I think the king is quite upset and jealous at the fact that how Sarah treats her friends and the dwarf so differently from how he was expecting he would be treated. I mean Sarah did reject him more than once. She rejected the gift of her dreams with the crystal twice in the movie she didn't subdue or submit to the effects entirely of the enchanted peach. She remembered her baby brother and had to continue on her journey. Jareth was expecting Sarah to stay under that spell and lose the time she had of rescuing her baby brother he never thought that after probably she was given the peach she would still have time to win and beat the clock. You see how frustrated he becomes when Sarah continues to not give up and continue her determination is what bothers and attracts her to him with a lot of other things I'm pretty sure. And make no mistake since that is one of the characteristics of why the Goblin King was created. I find that Jareth can be quite a jealous individual and he's not the type to share. I don't think he'll be the type that will want to share quality time with her and their friends he probably doesn't think much of Sarah's friends that she made through the journey to the Labyrinth one year ago.

Now moving on from that there's something else I'm pretty sure there would be another Labyrinth fan that would agree on this when it comes to the so-called personality of the Goblin King. It's the attitude he showed and the action he took when he was watching Sarah through one of his crystals about getting asked out on a date by another OC of mine named Tom and preparing for their date. Even before I made this story I always thought when I re-watched that part in the movie when Jareth has another meeting with Hoggle that he was a bit jealous of them or at least of the dwarf. Why do I say this? well if according to what's been said in the movie although it was never officially admitted that the Goblin King does or has developed feelings for Sarah he probably is the jealous type that doesn't want to share ^^

I mean out of all the friends Sarah made through her journey through the labyrinth she grew the closest with her first encounter and first friend which was the Hoggle the dwarf. I mean the king did warn the dwarf not to betray him and to follow his instruction of leading her back to the beginning which he constantly defied to do. Obviously, the king is aware of how scary and imitating he can be toward the dwarf and uses it to his advantage. Also, the King has the magic to boost his threat and intimidation any of his subjects that reside in his realm including the dwarf. It's not as if that dwarf can defend himself magically or physically against the king even if he wanted to. Even Hoggle admitted that he was nothing but a coward to Sarah. Remember when Jareth appeared again before the dwarf when Sarah was calling out for Hoggle when she was lost in the labyrinth's forests? Hoggle was about to go back and help her. It's quite obvious to me that the king had his eye on the dwarf because he seemed to have made the most connection and deepest friendship with Sarah since the beginning when she entered the Labyrinth. And in a way, Jareth had the right to be doubtful on Hoggle had a good right to be you could see the betrayal time and again happening with Hoggle when he was supposed to follow the king's orders.

Just don't expect any sudden romance between Sarah and Jareth anytime soon. I will mention presently now I want to keep the relationship between Sarah and the Goblin King as it was left in the movie completely ambiguous. Although there are hints that show that the Goblin King generally loves Sarah Williams it hasn't been fully admitted or shown in the movie. But given that there were at least two hints of a song or two songs within the movie that stated otherwise and how he allowed Sarah to leave after she beat him in the movie at least indicates that he did truly had affections for her. There will be no sudden romance happening between these two characters anytime soon or at least from Sarah's Williams in we can't make the Goblin King completely out of his original character I'm going to be doing my best with my co-partner to keep them as best in character as they were created in meant to be. Romance in this story is going to take quite some time to bloom and develop. Sarah Williams is not the type to immediately fall for anyone like that with the snap of a finger is the bite of an enchanted fruit for that matter.

So please guys don't whine and tell me why aren't J/S hooking up or getting romantic yet if you know where I'm going with the relationship between both of then kindly respect it and not make a fuss about it.

So everyone stays tuned for chapter 3 and maybe 4 how do you think of the first two chapters so far? and I will post more and do time so take care

TTFN.
