Disclaimer I don't own How to Train your Dragon. I haven't owned it before, and I won't own it in the future. All rights go to the author of the books, Cressida Cowell and the company that made the much-loved films and series, Dreamworks. This fanfic contains spoilers for HTTYD3, so don't read if you didn't watch that yet. I also do not own Death, so there's that.
Grimmel woke up on a strange forest island. It looked dark and he felt so cold, yet there was a sun in the sky. He coughed up salt water as memories hit him in the face. That last Night Fury . . . he would have been a fine addition to his collection of corpses. But where was that Night Fury?
And more importantly, where was he?
"Good to know that you're finally awake," a voice boomed. Grimmel looked around frantically for where the voice was coming from, but saw nobody.
"Where am I?" Grimmel snapped.
"The Underworld. You died," the voice informed bluntly. "More specifically, you drowned after a long fight with an admirable young man for his Night Fury companion."
"Who are you? How do you know this?" Grimmel snapped. That was when the figure materialized . . . literally, as atoms pieced themselves together until a large, unnaturally tall, hooded form holding a scythe came into Grimmel's view.
"I, Grimmel, am Death, the Grim Reaper. I plucked you out of the ocean after you died."
"I see! So I have ended up in Valhalla!" Grimmel rejoiced, a smile breaking out over his blatantly hideous face. "I thought it would look different."
"You aren't in Valhalla, you murderous psychopath!" Death snapped. "You are in your own personal eternal torture for the punishment of killing off almost every Night Fury and being responsible for decimating an entire species of dragon!"
"Night Furies aren't human! That doesn't count as murder! I demand a retrial!" Grimmel replied.
"You never got a trial in the first place, so a retrial will be impossible. And even if you did get a retrial, you would get the same verdict with the same torture."
"What torture?" Grimmel asked, his voice wavering.
"Your victims will be seeking their revenge," Death explained.
"What victims?" Death grinned, if it could be called that, and Grimmel's ears caught a rustling of leaves. Then, a Night Fury pounced from the bushes, a spear going through its side to show the way it was killed. Grimmel remembered killing this one; it took a long time to die. More flew in from all directions; some walked because of missing or damaged wings.
They were going to kill him after he was already dead.
Grimmel ran, jumping over branches and roots that seemed like they were designed to trip him up and make everything easier for the Night Furies to get to him. He went deeper and deeper into the forests, until he couldn't see or hear their screeching roars any more.
Except for one.
An inquisitive, quiet chirp came from somewhere next to the dragon hunter's foot, and he turned to look. A baby Night Fury was next to him; how it had gotten that deep into the forest was anybody's guess. "Well, hello, little one," Grimmel greeted, the first smile he'd had since dying appearing on his face. "You must be the only one of your wretched kind not out to get me."
He was wrong.
The Night Fury let out the loudest shriek it could, alerting the other Night Furies to its location as it paced around Grimmel, rubbing itself on Grimmel like a cat would to infuse its scent. Grimmel saw the ugly flash of a fresh wound on its stomach.
He really had shown no mercy to those dragons.
He jerked as he heard angry roars overhead. He had to keep running until he couldn't run a single step.
A large male Night Fury stopped him, dragging a leg that had a bear trap hanging onto it for dear life. He, like the others, had vengeance in his eyes.
Grimmel could have sworn that he saw a cruel smile on the dragon's face before he pounced.
Death watched the torture of Grimmel, going unnoticed by everybody involved, dragon or human. "These Night Furies suffered in life, and they shall be allowed to inflict their terrible revenge before they go on to a place where they shall not suffer," Death mused.
Thanks for waiting so long for me! I haven't been uploading for ages because life got in the way! Anyway, I got this idea from reading some of the comments from one of my other fics, A few clarifications. Anyway, I hope you guys like it.
