Papa Leo
Leonardo grunted and groaned with each hobbling step he took deeper into the cavern depths.
His heart was as his exhaustion-heavy body whilst he staggered and limped along the seemingly-endless winding narrow pathway of the caves he and his brothers and the rest of the resistance had been forced to live in while the outside world blazed. The dimly-lit caverns had a multitude of pathways that made it look more like a labyrinth if one were unfamiliar with the inner-workings of the underground, but, thankfully, Leo nor his brothers had to worry about getting lost since they had been very well acquainted with the sewers and anything to do with below ground practically since they were toddling around on their own stubby legs.
The turtle dressed in the blue cape carried on with the babe snuggled in his arms and sleeping soundly.
The little one hardly even stirred which worried the turtle to the point where he had to check whether or not he was still breathing, only to be relieved to find that his charge was perfectly fine and just sleeping. The very young Casey Jones Jr just slept away whilst curled into a little ball with his own thumb in his mouth (he'd had to substitute it for his own after Leo was forced to take his own finger away).
His dreams seemed peaceful, at least.
But who could blame the poor child for being tired after everything he had gone through?
He'd lost his mother and, despite being very young, was more than likely traumatised afterwards so he'd undoubtedly be exhausted and would need all the sleep his young mind could get.
"Leo! Bro! Wait up!"
Leo blinked but his glare hardened.
He'd almost forgotten that Mikey was still following him, growing increasingly anxious with every hurrying step from behind him.
The grief in his heart, the anger in his mind and the pain everywhere else was white hot and nowhere near ready to cool. His emotions were like a cyclone of torment and anguish and he was not looking forwards to informing his brothers of the painful and upcoming news that one of their very good friends and comrades has been killed.
How could he tell them?
Heck, how would they react?
This won't be pleasant, he knew that much.
It felt like an eternity had dragged on by —at least that's how it felt to Leo as the path in front of him had stretched on and on with each step he took to advance towards his destination— until he had reached the deeper mineral deposits of the cavern, where white gems sparkled and glimmered in the walls and ceiling above; this place had been made into the command centre as well as the gathering spot for him and his three brothers.
He finally reached the entryway of the mineral deposit and found two of his other brothers had apparently been awaiting his arrival.
The years had not been kind to Raphael or Donatello neither, same as Michaelangelo and Leonardo...
Raphael had lost an eye near the beginning of the war, thus making him wear an patch over what should have been his left eye inspite of his signature red mask already being placed around both eyes and he, himself, had grown to be way larger, stronger and more fierce than his little brothers. He had taken to wearing a shredded red cape with his top half being clothed in an old airplane general with one or two badges being pinned to his the cape where his chest would be.
Donatello looked almost the exact same as he did when he was younger with a couple of large differences such as the fact that he was beginning to grow short sideburns and a tiny scruffy goatee at the bottom of his chiselled chin. His large and bushy black eyebrows helped him have a rather grizzled appearance. Instead of his purple mask covering his eyes like it used to, he was wearing some rather plain glasses with some obviously-modified-by-himself-frames instead with his mask being used as a bracelet instead. It was usually hidden by the sleeve on his left arm of his new purple velvet silk lab coat that covered his modified battle shell which, in turn, covered his notoriously soft shell.
Leonardo inhaled and then exhaled, steeling himself for a painful conversation he was about to have.
He ventured in to the room/cavern and met up with his two other brothers while his third brother finally caught up behind, breathless and panting from hastening after him but not saying a word —Mike probably caught on that something was very wrong and decided not to speak for the time being, however he did wind up carrying the huge sack that Leon had dropped minutes beforehand.
"Oh!" He exclaimed "I see you managed to get a bunch of new materials for me, Leo!"
Mikey, panting heavily, entered carried the huge sack and, only after entering after his brother, he dropped it like a sack of potatoes…except it was more a sack of metal and rubbish and other random stuff.
The "room" had a huge computer/monitor hung on the wall which Donatello was currently active as he typed busily away at the keyboard —the computer screen itself shown five separate images of different sections of the world outside like what used to be the city or a Sandy dune (possibly the one Leo had crossed through to come here). The other two places looked quite forest-like.
The middle of the "room" had a large chair that acted as the epicentre which usually Raph took to sitting on when he had an audience as he listened to one of the rescued-civilians tell him about their grievances and how to improve the space itself down below. There were also some broken-down kitchen items tucked in the cavern such as a dining table and a fridge but, instead of a stove, there was a little primitive campfire burning away with some little pieces of birch acting as the kindling —the fire provided a lovely amber glow that added to make the place a rather soothing atmosphere.
"Yeah…" Mikey huffed, his face flat, annoyed and his voice dripping with sarcasm. "…Don't thank me for carrying that or anything."
Don decided to ignore Mikey and turned his swivel chair, where he had been sitting, and looked at Leo.
"How did your patrol go? Did you grab anything else? You look rather glum."
Leo didn't answer, he just stood there silently.
This silence was drawing major concern from Raph and Don while Mike's concern only increased.
Their brother wasn't known for being this quiet, not even after the Krang war had mostly changed him from the arrogant and egotistical brat he used to be. There was something off about his behaviour and there was this…dark aura…radiating from him as he stood in the room with a look darker than the darkest of blacks.
The less he said, the more that concern grew.
"N-Nardo?" Don spoke up, worry prominent in his tone, he hadn't used that nickname in ages as he tried to get his twin brother to react. "….What happened out there?"
Leo remained silent for five more seconds….before he finally turned to look at his brothers with absolute pain etching across his facial features. His heart felt like a scorpion had pierced it with its tail, injecting it with his dire poison. It was time he finally told them and he licked his own lips in preparation, he couldn't keep stalling for much longer.
"Wh-While I was out looking for supplies, I stumbled across Cassandra in some alleyway…."
"A-And? How was she?" Mike urged his big brother to continue.
Leo obliged, his eyes widening into the size of dinner plates and beginning to tear up.
"….She was in a real bad way, th-there was nothing I could do!"
Before Leo could say anymore, he was plucked up and was grabbed by the front of his scarf/cape/hood and then hoisted off the ground.
He found himself staring into the rage-filled eyes of Raph.
"Leo…are you actually kidding me!?" The giant snapper turtle practically flew into a furious rage, his one good eye narrowed and his teeth sharpened into knife-like fangs in his mouth..but it became obvious that his anger was more fuelled by sadness than actual pure fury. "You…You can't really be serious! This has gotta be a joke! Stop playing with Raph!"
Leo shook his head, his voice heavy with sorrow.
"I'm not. Cass….she's….she's gone…."
Raph, Mikey and Don all wore differing expressions of horror on their faces as they felt as though their bodies had been plunged in ice as the blood in their veins froze.
Nobody could believe what they had just been informed and that devastated them:
Mikey lifted his hands to cover his mouth and shook his head in disbelief in hopes that the news he and his other three brothers had just received was not true. The tears welled up in his eyes almost immediately and he felt a huge lump form in the back of his throat as he sobbed.
Don just stood statue as his pupils shrunk into pinpricks. He looked to be in a state of such shock that his brilliant and ingenious mind had shut down, unable to think and unable to process any information except for the devastating fact he had just been informed of.
Raph just stood there with his jaw slack as he tried to comprehend this new reality that Cass had been killed, his one good eye threatened to glisten with tears but he squeezed it shut in stubborn refusal. He was not going to let himself cry, but the tears started to ooze anyway. He couldn't even stop himself from chewing his own lip to prevent it from quivering —he had been a soldier for three years and his heart had been hardened by the sights of war…or he thought it had.
Still in a state of disbelief, he released his grip on Leo's scarf and let his brother tumble to the ground but he managed to catch himself before he could fall and hurt Casey in doing so. It was after regaining his footing that Leo stood back, watching as each one of his brothers showed their own signs of grief over the loss of their friend.
Leo remained watchful.
"H-H-H-How?" Mikey sputtered disbelievingly, a single tear oozing from one eye and trickling down his cheek while he wrapped his own arms around himself as if he were cold and trying to warm himself up, even though it wasn't cold in the slightest. "Cassandra is practically invincible! Nothing could take her down!"
It was true; as an former foot clan ninja, Cassandra "Casey" Jones was not only a martial arts expert but she was a tough costumer to deal with as well as a lethal assassin. There was very little she couldn't handle on her own unless whichever foe she was facing was scarily strong and had fought dishonourably against her. Even though Cass was strong, it was clear that so were the Krang and this entire situation just hammered home how powerful those aliens were…
The Red-eared slider turtle turned to look away with shame and regret, unable to look any of his brothers in the eye.
"…She was already hurt real bad when I found her. She managed to tell me that she got ambushed while out looking for food and supplies, but it looked as if she fought to the bitter end."
That was a bit of a comfort, at least, that she didn't go down without a fight.
But now it was time to deliver the biggest news of all.
Leo's expression hardened as he decided to rip the plaster off and get the rest over with.
He looked all three of his brothers dead in the eye and repositioned his stance slightly so the white-blanketed bundle he cradled up against his plastron was not so much as concealed anymore —he wasn't trying to purposefully conceal the babe from their view but, he supposed that they just weren't as focused on the bundle as they were too busy listening to his report.
"…..Th-There's more, bros."
He turned his torso so as to properly reveal the baby to them, cuddled in one of his yellow-striped arms, bringing him out into the forefront.
"It turns out that Cassandra had a baby…a-and she wanted…m-me to care for him.."
All eyes were on the babe in an instant and Mikey, Don and Raph were all rendered silent once again as they tried to process this other gigantic piece of information that each one of their brains just didn't know how to let sink in as they already had trouble swallowing Cassandra's death…but she had a baby?
And she told nobody, not even April!?
Mikey was the first to get over the shock as he immediately popped up right in front of Casey's line of sight in order to peer at the babe more closely. His eyes were practically sparkling with adoration while the adorability was becoming too much for his heart to handle —it was like someone had pumped him full of rainbows and sparkles and everything to make him giddy with glee despite the gloomy situation.
"D'awwww!" The orange-spotted box turtle cooed as he leaned in to have a look at the baby. "What a cute whiddle fewwa!"
Everyone rolled their eyes.
Of course Mikey would be the first to go "ga-ga" over the little one…
It was a well-known fact that he loved puppies and babies.
Donatello also leaned in but more out of subdued concern more than anything as he studied the infant being carefully cradled in his big brother's arms. His mouth formed a thin line and his eyes hardened slightly as he oh-so carefully lain the back of his hand over the child's forehead to check the heat radiating from it.
"Hmm…" He mused thoughtfully while he looked the babe over. "…He seems to be okay outwardly, we'd better get him looked over to see if he was hurt during the event that killed…"
Don trailed off when he noted the saddened expressions on his brothers' faces and decided against finishing that sentence while he removed his hand from the child's head and then used one arm to gesture towards the table which was used for first aid medical care for injured troops injured out in the field.
Reluctantly, Leo put his tiny charge down on said table and let his purple-clad, soft-shelled, technical-minded brother oversee the little one's physical health.
Casey was finally unwrapped from the white blankets he had been swaddled within this whole time and it revealed that he had been dressed in a plain lime green onesie with a little cartoon tortoise stitched to the front; it made the turtles smile a little in nostalgia as that made them all wonder if Cass had done this as a reference to them? It was a nice little thing to see. Anyways, now that he was out of his blanketed confinement, it was revealed that little Casey jr had long jet black hair (than most baby boys) which reached down to the base of his neck regarding length. He also had little smudges of dirt and soot covering his skin and hair and he had no signs of injury whatsoever.
In the meantime, Mikey decided to converse with Leo about the baby and what he knew about him.
"Awww, what's his name?" The youngest just-over-teenage mutant ninja turtle inquired.
"….Casey Jr." Leo responded, smiling sadly.
Everyone froze once again as they all looked at each other, then to Casey and then to each other again before they all smiled a tiny bit with nostalgia flashing across each and every one of their faces while they reminisced about Cassandra and how she, herself, had given herself the nickname "Casey" and how she was practically fearless and ready to leap into any battle…literally, she'd jump in the middle of a thousand enemies and fight them with a hunger for strength that couldn't be craved or sated.
"Sooo…Cass named her son after herself? For real?" Don asked flatly, cocking a brow at his siblings.
Leo nodded.
Despite the circumstances, not even he could fight back the tiniest hint of a grin.
"Yep."
Don's smile evaporated into thin air as he resumed his check-up on the infant sat on the table in front of him and shone a little light in the tiny child's eye in order to check his blinking reflexes before being satisfied that they were adequate and then moving on. Baby Casey's green onesie had to be zipped down and partially slid off by removing his little arms from the sleeves so his pudgy little baby chest was exposed.
This was done so the stethoscope would sound better.
The technology-minded terrapin slipped on a stethoscope, plugging the buds into his own earholes before he placed the round bit of the stethoscope right over Casey's chest.
The boy flinched and tried to squirm away at the cold touch of the metal, whining and whinging so as to clearly communicate his upset and distress at the cold metal going anywhere near him but Mikey was quick and grabbed him by the underarms in order to keep him firmly in place before the youngling could shuffle too far back to the point he'd teeter off the edge of the table and nobody wanted to see him tumble off of it.
As he was being looked over, Casey's eyes began to fill with tears and his lips began to form a squiggly line.
Everyone noticed and immediately became alarmed.
Oh no!
Casey was about to cry!
"Ah!" Mikey gasped. "Oh no! Don't cry, little dude!"
Casey sat on the table, being held fast and tight by Michaelangelo, and he couldn't help but look scared as his lips quivered and trembled even more while the tears spilled over and cascaded relentlessly down his chubby cheeks while he shook his little podgy arms up and down while kicking his stubby legs in a tantrum.
"WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!"
That was when baby Casey wailed at full volume.
His cries sounded like a screeching pterodactyl mixed with a puppy squeak —adorably endearing but very annoying!
The four turtles all grimaced at the piercing howls that burst from the tiny child's lungs. Little Casey's eyes were closed shut, and he hung his head back and opened his mouth as wide as it could go (exposing the fact that teeth were just beginning to grow in). The four ninja turtles began to collectively cover their earholes in hopes to drown out the noise that threatened to shatter their eardrums while they wracked their brains in hopes to remedy the situation.
It was always a wonder how something so small could produce such a sound that could probably shatter the sound barrier with ease!
"Someone do something!" Don cried, yelling just so he could be heard over the wailing.
The genius terrapin wearing purple had stuffed his fingers in his nonexistent ears in a desperate attempt to drown out the noise. He even wanted to rip his own hair out in an attempt to drown out the awfully high-pitched cacophony yet refrained from doing so.
POP!
A popping sound alerted the group and everything became peaceful once more as baby Casey suddenly fell completely silent.
Curious about what brought on this sudden relief and silence, everyone unplugged their earholes and then they all turned to see that not only had Leo scooped the babe up off the cold table and took him back into his warm and muscular arms but he had also stuck his finger into the child's small mouth. Said child was now suckling on the thin green digit with a peaceful little expression on his tiny, squishy face but the unshed tears glistened in his giant and adorably expressive eyes.
"Wh-Wha?" Don asked, stunned. "How did you know that'd work?"
Leo shrugged in response, trying not to show visible disgust at having his finger covered in baby dribble once again.
"…I found out earlier that this seems to be the only thing that calms him down."
Don massaged his now-aching-temple, minding his large eyebrows, and sighed.
"In anywho, the little tyke appears to be one hundred percent healthy."
Leo, as he listened to this, slid Casey's little chubby arms back into his onesie sleeves and then finished by zipping said onesie back up again and held him close and rather protectively.
Donnie spoke again as he tried to make his brilliant mind work but it was still stalling from shock and grief. He tried to sound level-headed but it was clear that all that info overload he experienced was affecting him in some ways —whether they were good or bad, nobody knew.
"Okay….Okay, now we gotta send someone to go fetch Cassandra's body. She deserves a proper funeral and, from the sound of things, you promised one of us would come back for her. Which was a good promise to make seeing as we were never gonna leave her there…dead nor alive."
And Raph asked the next important inquiry.
"…And what're ya gonna do with the kid?"
Leo's brows furrowed in response to the question directed at him, he fought the urge to roll his eyes.
"What I promised! Duh! I already said that Casey wanted me to raise him."
Everyone froze for a second.
Did…Did they hear that right? Leo had to still be in shock and was speaking out of his shell! He couldn't be thinking straight! Did Leonardo's ego know no bounds? Had he gone daffy!? No, he must had been speaking purely out of trauma and nothing else, to raise a child by himself was…was madness!
Raph was the first to react as he glowered at the Red-eared slider turtle dressed in blue, his very being radiating with concentrated determined frustration.
"….Did you, perhaps, forget the fact that we are all runnin' a resistance here, not a daycare? I mean, how are you gonna do this all on your own? Besides! I ain't sure you are the best guy to raise him."
Leo's eyes hardened into a glare.
"Excuse me?"
Raph's eyes also hardened into a glare that matched his brother's in every aspect.
"Ya heard me loud n' clear, little brother! A baby takes a lotta' time! A lotta' time, patience and responsibility! Ya can't just take him out on your scouting missions where he could get really hurt and what're ya gonna do when the kid might see ya or someone else he cares about die right in front of 'em? That's gonna be real tough on the kid! And guess what? Our lives are full a' that!"
Leo shot back.
"Well the poor little guy already did! He saw his mother die right in front of him! Our friend! Did you forget that?!"
Raph pinched the "chasm" (or line) between his eyes, trying desperately not to let his temper slip to the point he'd yell and scare the child Leo was still holding; yes, he was cross and, yes, he sometimes let his temper run as wild as an escaped animal from a zoo but it was getting difficult to remember the important aspects when that fiery hot temper boiled over.
"No! I didn't!" He replied, exasperated. "But ya can't balance raising a kid and building a resistance! It's like being asked to carry a bunch'a elephants while also bein' asked to juggle a bunch'a chainsaws at the same time! And I should know about doing more than I can handle!"
By this point, Don and Mike both hung back as they knew better then to get involved with Leo and Raph's fights unless it were absolutely necessary. They looked left and right while their brothers argued as though they were watching a tennis match; it was a tennis match of words but still like a tennis match nonetheless…and it was getting harder to both watch and listen to them fight as the shouting was starting to boil over.
Leo's mouth was like a verbal spitfire at this point as he brought up another point.
"Besides Splinter, you know, our father, raised us four on his own just fine so I'm sure I can do it too!"
Raph's eyes narrowed into slits of furious fire.
"Don't bring our dad into this!"
Leo and Raph kept going at it as they kept arguing and were practically at each other's throats by now.
"Look! I promised Cass that I'd raise her kid and that's what I'm gonna do!"
"B-But we wanna help-!" Mikey exclaimed helplessly, only to he cut off by Raph.
"Ya know what? Fine then! Don't listen to me! You'll see that you just can't do it alone!"
Leo shook his head in downright refusal; he wasn't asking for anyones help! He had promised Cass that he would do this as her final wish, she wanted him to raise him and he was going to do it! Of course, she never said he couldn't include his brothers —heck, a small part of him knew that Cassandra wanted them all to raise her son as a collective team— but he was determined to do this himself.
He had to fix his mistake and raise this child!
Casey's eyes began to grow fearful and his mouth which formed around the anthropomorphic giant turtle's finger started to tremble and grow squiggly and Leo, in turn, rocked Casey in a hurried rhythm in his one arm to prevent him from crying yet again; the tiny boy quietened a bit as he closed his eyes and cuddled up to Leonardo's chest and gripped on tight to the terrapin's scarf with his tiny fist —most likely for security.
That was when Raph said something which stepped over the line:
"Ya know, if you had actually listened to me back then and had taken your responsibilities seriously when the Krang had first invaded, then the whole world wouldn't have gone to pot."
Silence.
Just silence.
The hurt on Leonardo's face was painfully palpable as his eyes were wide and his mouth fell open.
That was when Raph regretted what he had just done.
How could he have said such a thing?
No! He didn't mean it!
Raph's immediate reaction was to reach out and try and apologise for his thoughtless words.
"L-Leo…I didn't mean…" He tried to speak.
But Leo stepped back from the large one-eyed Snapper turtle, his expression shifting from hurt to disgusted within a millisecond.
He knew what he had done wrong all those years ago!
They all knew that he didn't like to be reminded that he failed when the Krang had first invaded, when he failed to keep his ego in check and behaved like his brothers needed him when, in reality, he needed his brothers…when he behaved that everything was all about himself.
Leo never liked to be reminded of his wrongdoings…
Especially not from Raph!
As if sensing the tension in the room, Casey began to try and spit out Leo's finger and started fussing.
Leo, in turn, took this as his chance to abscond.
He glared harshly at his brothers and started to heft baby Casey up over his shoulder and let him holler over it while he carried him gently but firmly, trying not to hold his new charge too tight out of fear of hurting him inadvertently while channeling his anger and frustration into his (somewhat) tight grip.
"I-If you guys excuse me, I've got a kid to look after." His voice was coated with frost yet the upset quiver interlacing it was unmistakable. It was clear that his big brother's remark hurt him to the core.
It must have felt like a stab to the heart or a knife in the back, perhaps even like a smack to the face or a swift punch to the gut.
He didn't care how it felt, really.
He just needed to leave!
He spun on his own two feet and headed out the doorway with quick steps while his body was stiff and tense, even his shell was prickling with hurt as he made his way out and hastened in the direction of the cavern which became his private quarters. Leonardo's exit was so icy and angry that it left behind a frigid hostility in its wake, it was as if the air itself had frozen over due to the hostility brewing within it.
It was not a nice atmosphere to be occupying.
"Leo! Wait! I'm sorry! Come back!" Raph called out but the Red-eared slider dressed in blue had already left.
Mike, Don and Raph all stood still in disbelief as they each mentally took in what had just happened.
Then Michaelangelo proceeded to turn so sharp to face Raph that he could have easily given himself whiplash, his glare so sharp that it could slice through titanium, his brows gathered like angry thunderheads and his jaw set. His orange robes flapped in the air currents his sharp yet abrupt turn provided and created a soft "whoosh" of a sound.
He was usually so carefree and optimistic.
But no, he was furious right now.
"What the heck, Raph!" Mikey snapped, startling Raph and Don out of their shock-induced-stupor. "I dunno who peed in your cereal but what you said was messed up! Leo isn't the one at fault here and blamin' him for something that wasn't his fault is just…just…!"
Raph was shocked at his baby brothers outburst and tried to grab his shoulder to calm him.
"M-Mikey…please! I didn't mean it…"
But Mikey, eyes narrowed and full of angry and burning hot tears, gritted his teeth with his lower lip quivering. His face said "don't you dare touch me" crystal clearly but it was also full of guilt for Leonardo as he sharply wrenched his shoulder right out of Raph's grip upon contact. It was heart-breaking to see such an expression on the face of someone so full of life such as Mikey…
He, too, proceeded to storm right out of the cavern/room without saying another word.
Don and Raph were both rendered stunned.
Michaelangelo had always been the optimist of the family, the one who always found the brighter side of any situation, the one who never even raised his voice to a goose…unless he was in his "Dr. Delicate" persona but even that was very unlikely. He wasn't even referring himself as such which just confirmed that this was Mikey, himself, telling off his big brother in defence of his other big brother.
He never had the guts to do something like this…until now.
Raph sighed regretfully.
Great.
Now he had upset two of his younger brothers with his hurtful words.
He truly hadn't meant for those words to leave his mouth, he was just worried that his younger brother was trying to take on more than he was ready to balance. He knew from personal experience how shouldering so much responsibility on yourself could cause one's tolerance to explode and pop like the cork on a bottle of drink if the pressure became too much.
He wished their father was still there, he'd have known what to do…probably…when he wasn't watching the television…
Don sighed as he stepped next to his older brother and used one of his metallic claws to pat his shoulder reassuringly.
"E-Errrr…" The intellectual ninja turtle muttered awkwardly. "…C'mon, lets see what Nardo b-brought back from his t-trip outside,"
It was a suggestion but neither he nor Raph were going to set out on actually doing said suggestion for quite some time.
Don wasn't angry with Raph; yes, what his big brother said was hurtful…but, from a logical standpoint, he could see where he was coming from and he wasn't technically wrong when he said that his twin brother wasn't going to be ready to raise little Casey all on his own without help. But he knew that when Leo as stubborn like this, it was better to let him fail first so he could figure it out on his own. Besides, Raphael needed companion ship without judgement and Don needed someone to assist him in shifting through the stuff Leo brought back from his outing earlier.
Then they planned on finding a way to retrieve Cass and bring her down here for a proper burial.
But now was not the time.
Right now, all the strong Snapping turtle and the smart Soft-shelled turtle could do was stare off in the direction of the cavern where both of their other brothers had just left.
A/N: Heres a new chapter, guys.
Raph, Mikey and Donnie all find out about baby Casey and they don't take it well…or Mikey does, Raph and Don are more reluctant and it all leads to a fight to Leo and Raph.
What will happen next?
Will Leo find out that trying to raise a baby isn't as easy as it looks?
