Sora was waiting on the street corner for his friends to show up, and his mind was filled with eagerness at the thought of his date tonight. The reservation he had made had been done six weeks in advance and he wasn't going to let it pass.
Twilight High had just let out and as the students poured out, Sora waited for her.
And he waited a long time before he finally saw her. "Kairi!"
The red headed girl in the white Twilight High uniform saw him and smiled. But it quickly disappeared as a white car pulled up next to her. Wondering what was going on Sora started to walk up to the car as Kairi was leaning down to look in inside the vehicle. He heard shouting from the inside and Kairi sounded like she was protesting the orders she was being given but the other voice was louder and demanded that she get in the car.
She gave Sora a sad look before she complied, very reluctantly Sora added.
The car sped off as soon as Kairi closed the door, completely ignoring the spikey haired youth as it approached.
"What the heck was that about?"
It wasn't like her to ignore him like that, unless she was upset that is.
Quickly pulling out his cellphone Sora speed dialed Kairi's number and waited. He only heard the first ring before she answered. He spoke first, "Kairi, what's going on?"
"I'm so sorry Sora but I can't speak with you anymore-"
"Tell him you're grounded for life."
That other voice Sora recognized. That was Kairi's father. Now he knew what was going on. However, his attention focused on his girlfriend who was sounding extremely distraught at the moment. "What does he have against me this time?"
"I don't know but he says I can't-hey give that back!"
Sora heard another voice go into the receiver, "Listen punk. Stay away from my daughter."
Steeling himself Sora verbally fought back, "Or what? She loves me and you have no right to stop her from doing so."
"She doesn't deserve to be with you or around your crew. If you don't back off I will get a restraining order against you and send you far away from this town."
"Over my dead body, old man."
"This is your last warning. Now-" from what Sora could gather he handed the phone back to Kairi and she was sobbing into the phone. Over her heavy sobs Sora heard her father tell her, "Do it."
"Sora, I'm sorry but...we can't be together anymore."
His heart would have dropped but Sora wasn't down so easily. He heard the pain in her voice as she was forced to say the words. "Kairi, I'll think of something."
"I love you," she sobbed just before the phone was knocked out of her hand.
"Hang that up and don't ever say that again!"
Kairi screeched back like a feral cat, "Shut up!"
Then the line went dead.
Sora lowered his phone and felt his blood begin to boil. That man had gotten between himself and Kairi again. This was getting ridiculous.
Taking a deep breath he put his phone back in his pocket.
"Yo, Sora pal how's it going?"
Sora turned and saw his friend Axel and his girlfriend Larxene, as well as his cousin Roxas approaching him. They were usually the last ones to leave the school when it was let out.
Normally Sora would be all smiles but after what he just heard he wasn't in the mood.
Axel noticed, "Someone get into a fight? Where's Kairi?"
"Her dad forced us to break up."
"Well that's a bunch of bull," said Larxene. She and Kairi knew each other and were something of friends. She did support Sora and Kairi's relationship, just like she supported Roxas and rich girl Namine being together.
Axel put an arm around his girlfriend's shoulders, "Then we better get to working on how to fix this."
Sora couldn't agree more, but how would they be able to? "How though?
Roxas stepped up, his white and black hood up over his head. "We'll think of something. We can't see you being without her."
"Seriously. You become mopey when she's not around." Axel chuckled at Larxene's words.
Sora couldn't argue with them. When Kairi wasn't around he became almost catatonic and unresponsive until she would be by his side once again.
"But what about her old man? He threatened me with a restraining order if I came around Kairi again."
This time, Axel smiled mischievously. "I got a plan. Come here."
Kairi had to be literally carried by her father into her room from the car. She had been kicking and screaming the entire way, not to mention crying her eyes out. After he had dropped her off and locked her door from the outside he let her ball her eyes out until she quieted down.
From outside her door Kairi could hear her parents arguing about Sora and while she could have joined them from the other side of her door Kairi didn't have the strength to speak. Her mother had been on her side about Sora, thinking he was such a nice boy, but her father had always hated him, his friends, and the amount of time he spent with his daughter. His assumption was that they had been up to no good, whatever that meant. Drugs, sex, that sort of thing most likely, none of which Sora and Kairi had ever done. But no matter how much she argued and denied it her father never believed her.
After pouring her tears into her pillow for a long time, Kairi heard the doorbell but didn't think to get up. Even if it was for her, those who came to see her would no doubt be told to go home as she was grounded from seeing anyone until further notice.
Her father could be heard yelling at whoever was down at the door, but it was the distinct tapping on the glass of her window that got Kairi's attention. As soon as her eyes were cleared of tears she gasped and her heart began to beat fast as she saw Sora's smiling face looking at her from the other side of the glass.
She ran over to the window and opened them , wasting no time at all at wrapping her arms around Sora's neck and holding him tightly. "You crazy dummy!"
Sora had climbed up the rose trellis that covered a large section of the side of the house"I was going to go with a Romeo and Juliet reference but I'm kind of pressed for time here." Sora put his arms around Kairi's shoulders. "I got here as fast as I could to rescue you."
Kairi pulled back, "Then whose at the front door?"
"Axel and his crew are doing me a solid while I do what I know is right," answered Sora. "Grab your stuff, the car is waiting."
"Huh? What do you mean?"
"I'm taking you away from here."
The girl's eyes went wide. "That's kidnapping, Sora!"
"Uh, not if you consent then it's not. I did my research."
"Still, this is crazy even for you…"
"The only thing I am crazy about is being in love with a girl like you," said Sora unapologetically. He knew full well that sentence was full of cringe but he didn't care.
Kairi noted it as well. "That was so corny, but that's one thing I love about you."
"Corny but honest," said Sora. "Now get your stuff together and let's go before your dad gets suspicious."
The red head went about in a mad dash getting a small bag of clothes ready. All the while she spoke, "Where are we going?"
"Riku is lending us his summer house on Destiny Islands until this whole thing blows over."
Zipping up the only bag full of things she absolutely needed, "My dad finds out we're all screwed. Not just you and me but Riku as well."
"Don't worry about it," said Sora as he motioned for Kairi to follow him. He didn't want to frighten her but he could hear Kairi's father shouting all sorts of obscenities at Axel and Roxas. "Demyx should be coming in any second now—"
A blue car came speeding around the corner of the block with the music blaring and came to a screeching halt at the rear driveway.
"Right on time," said Kairi, speaking on Sora's behalf.
The teenage boy leaped down the trellis and offered his arms to Kairi. She took a risk and hopped from her window and landed safely in Sora's arms. He didn't put her down after that as he ran with her in his arms to Demyx's car.
"I owe our friends big time!"
They did this just in time for Kairi's father to poke through the window and shout after them. They didn't hear anything he said as they got inside and sped off in the distance.
Thankfully the trip to the dock was short and the subsequent transfer to Destiny Islands was uneventful. Even Kairi was surprised when she and Sora came to the dock on the island without so much as a siren from the cops. She sighed in relief as she held Sora's hand and looked back at the town they had just left. "I am not going back any time soon."
"That was the plan. Riku said we can use his cabin until we decide to return. I had a feeling you'd want to stay."
She turned to Sora, affection in her eyes as she looked up at him, "As long as I am with you I will never want to leave."
Sora smiled, "Well, I guess now would be the best time to do this."
Before she could even begin to ask what he meant Kairi's mouth opened as Sora got on one knee and offered her a gold ring in his hand.
"Want to stay with me forever, Kairi?"
Her lip trembling with emotion Kairi brought both her hands to her chest. So overcome with feelings she couldn't bring herself to answer vocally, she nodded repeatedly before putting her arms around him and they both collapsed into he sand.
For Sora this had been his plan from the moment he had made the deal with Axel and Riku to help get Kairi from her house. Their elopement had worked out, and now they were engaged.
Now, both of them were happy in the start of their new life together.
