Lizzie McDonald was sitting on her bed, hugging her legs to her chest crying cause she was afraid of thunderstorms. It was usually Marti, but Marti was at her mom's house and Lizzie always stayed strong for her younger sister. Anyway as the thunder clapped loudly, Lizzie shut her eyes tightly. "It'll be over soon." Lizzie said to herself.
Just then she heard the door open, but was too scared to see who it was.
"Shhh, it's ok Liz." She heard her older step-brother Derek whispers.
"D-Derek?" Lizzie asked as she opened her eyes.
"Hey kid, it's ok." Derek assured her.
"What are you doing here?" She asked.
"Because I'm your big brother." Derek said, letting out a chuckle.
Lizzie smiled to herself.
"Beside whenever my youngsters are scared, big bro Derek got ya backs." he added as he smiled softly.
"Even for me and Casey?" Lizzie asked innocently.
"Of course Lizzie." Derek told her. "You, Marti and even Casey are my baby sisters and Edwin is my baby brother."
Lizzie looks up as Derek smiles at her.
"But in my eyes, you kiddos will always be my baby sisters and baby brother." Derek said, assuring her.
Lizzie looks down smiling and back at Derek.
"Thanks big brother." She replied.
"Hey, anytime kid." Derek said, kissing her head. "I'm always here for you."
Lizzie sniffs.
"Come on, try going back to sleep." Derek said.
"Do I have too?" Lizzie asked.
Derek smiled at the innocence in his little step-sister.
"Don't worry, I'm right here to protect you." Derek said, comforting her in his arms. "I won't let anything scare you." He promised her.
Lizzie smiled, as she closed her eyes.
"I love you, big brother." Lizzie said.
"I love you, too, kid." Derek replied, kissing her head and holding her tightly.
Even though Lizzie has a biological sister, she was sure glad she had 2 new big brothers to protect her.
