Me and Johnny decided to watch Carnival of Souls while we waited for the kids to start showing up.
I shut off all the lights, grinning when Johnny jumped. "You don't mind right?" I asked as I sat down next to him on the couch.
"Nah, it's alright." He said, but she scooted closer to me anyway.
I started the movie, and passed Johnny a slice of Sodapop's homemade cake. He grinned and began devouring the chocolate cake.
A knock on the door made us both jump thirty minutes later. The kids were starting to show up.
"I'll get it." Johnny said, jumping up and grabbing the bowl. He opened the door, and I saw a little girl dressed as a fairy standing there shyly. She was about five years old.
"Hello." Johnny said, kneeling down to meet her in the eyes. "And what could you be?" He asked.
"I'm a fairy." She chirped.
"Oh, well what a cute little fairy you are." He said. "Would you like some candy?" He held out the bowl, and she nodded before grabbing a twix.
"Thank you." She whispered before running off back to her parents.
"She was cute." I said as Johnny sat back down.
It only took a few more minutes for more kids to start showing. Me and Johnny took turns answering the door, laughing about the costumes we saw after sitting back on the couch.
One kid had a sheet thrown over his head, and pretended to only speak Boo!, making his mom look embarrassed as she steered him away. Me and Johnny cracked up for five minutes.
An hour later we finished the movie, and decided we'd sit outside. I pulled out a deck as we sat on the steps, and we played poker with candy.
More and more kids flooded the street, going up to houses and shouting trick-or-treat. Sometimes they got a trick, making parents fume. We didn't get as many kids as some of the other houses, since we were teens playing poker and the parents didn't trust us.
I won two rounds, and Johnny won one, before it was time to start heading over to the DX.
We went inside to grab our masks, mine a devil's mask and his a frankenstein one he'd added blood to.
It wasn't the safest thing for greasers to walk around town alone on Halloween, but since it was still light out we hoped we'd be fine. Plus, the DX wasn't too far.
Me and Johnny walked in silence. We didn't normally talk a lot, both preferring the silence. Sometimes we had silent conversations, but most of the time we kept to ourselves unless there was something we really wanted to talk about.
"Hey Pony, look." Johnny pointed to a blue mustang trailing the streets slowly.
"Let's hurry up." I said, starting a speed walk. I hoped the gang was close enough to hear us yell if the soc's tried jumping us.
The mustang sped up along with us, and a curly blonde stuck his head out the window. "Hey grease!" He shouted. "Hey, I'm talkin to ya!" He said when we didn't acknowledge him.
I turned around, scowling even though he couldn't see my face behind the mask. Johnny got closer to me, and I could feel him shaking.
"Those are the socs who jumped me." He whispered. I tensed at that. No wonder Johnny was so scared.
"Come on, let's make a run for it." I hissed.
We turned around and took off at a run for the DX. We could hear the car racing behind us. I knew we were doomed.
The mustang caught up and two guys jumped out, tackling us.
"Darry!" I screamed. "Soda!" Johnny began yelling with me. We both knew halloween had the highest death rate for greasers, and we didn't want to be a part of those who had died the years before.
"Shut up greasers!" The one top of me yelled, slamming my head into the ground.
"Take off their masks." one of them said. "I want to see their faces as I kill them."
