It was an ordinary day on DK Island. Dixie Kong, a young chimpanzee who was Diddy Kong's girlfriend, was on her way to DK's tree house to visit him. When she arrived, she met Diddy, who was playing with his favorite video game console.
"Hi, Diddy," Dixie said cheerfully.
"Dix! You're here so early? I thought you'd be watching Kiddy for another half hour," said Diddy, not taking his eyes off the console.
"Yeah... about that: Tiny insisted that I go with you. She said she would take care of Kiddy and have everything under control," Dixie said.
"Typical Tiny, she always wants to see us together," said the young monkey with a chuckle. "There, I finally finished that level! In your face!" Diddy exclaimed, and then began to stretch and put his console aside.
"So, Diddy, do you want to have some fun?" Dixie asked with a cute smile.
"Sure, just let me get my cap and we'll go from there," said Diddy. He then proceeded to look for his cap, only to find a big mess that both he and his uncle DK had made. With a little embarrassment, Diddy added, "Uh... I think it will take a while; wait a moment, Dixie."
While Dixie waited for her boyfriend to find his cap, the young chimpanzee began rummaging through the tree house. The first thing she did was to look at the games Diddy collected, then to look at the memories he had of Timber Island as well as Isle o' Hags. She finally came to an old box that had long since caught her attention; Diddy generally preferred to avoid talking about what was in that box, a strange thing, as he was generally an open book when it came to his personal things.
Dixie was hesitant to open it, as she didn't want Diddy to be upset with her, but after thinking about it for a few moments, she finally opened it. To her surprise, the box contained nothing special, just a photo album.
"Was this what Diddy was hiding so much?" thought Dixie. She wanted to take a little look at what it contained. There were some old pictures of Diddy when he was little; in them she could see that he was wearing a cap very similar to the one Timber wears, besides looking quite adorable, drawing a smile to the young chimpanzee's face.
"Alright, it took me a while longer than it should have, but I finally found it!" said Diddy, as he put on his characteristic cap and added, "One of these days I'll tell Donkey to get a coat rack–I can't believe I'm saying this, but Cranky was right."
But as he finished speaking, Diddy saw something that perplexed him: Dixie was looking through his old photo album.
"Dixie!" exclaimed Diddy, running desperately to her. "Give me that!" he said, embarrassed and annoyed, trying to take the album from Dixie. But Dixie was holding it away from him.
"Was this what you were hiding from me? Diddy, there's nothing wrong with showing your pictures from when you were little–you looked pretty cute!" she said, laughing but a little surprised by her boyfriend's behavior.
"I'm serious, Dixie, give it to me now!" Diddy demanded, trying to take the album away from Dixie, without success, as Dixie was still moving it out of his reach.
"No, not until you explain it to me," Dixie said, determined to know the truth.
Diddy simply kept trying to take the album from her without success: no matter how hard he tried, Dixie kept moving it away from the young monkey, who finally gave up and sighed in defeat.
"Okay... just keep looking and you'll figure it out," Diddy said in a discouraged tone, as he crossed his arms and looked away.
Dixie continued to look through the album. As she flipped through a few pages, besides seeing more adorable pictures of Diddy, she soon found something that perplexed her.
One of the pages contained a picture of Diddy when he was little, but, unlike the others, this one was accompanied by two Kongs that she couldn't identify, as Dixie didn't know them. One was physically similar to Donkey Kong and the other was physically similar to Diddy, they looked quite happy together. Dixie concluded that they were Diddy's parents, something that caught the young chimpanzee's attention, since Diddy almost never mentioned them, as if talking about them would only take away that smile that characterizes him so much.
The young Kong girl took a little glance at Diddy: he still had the same discouraged face, but at the same time he looked thoughtful; Dixie looked at the album again, this time in a more worried way. As she scrolled further, instead of seeing photographs, there were only letters, the senders of which contained the name "Diddiane Kong". Most messages were about how much she missed Diddy and that she would someday fulfill the promise she made to him before she left; apparently, Diddiane was a loving mother and her priority was to see her son.
It certainly would have been nice to meet her, thought Dixie, as she continued to flip through the pages of the album. On the last page, there was only a letter written by Diddy, with a short message that read: "Mom, where are you?".
Finally, Dixie, sorrowful and remorseful, closed the photo album, returning it to where she had found it.
"Now do you see why I never wanted you to see what was in that box?" Diddy said, a small tear welling up in his eye.
"I'm so sorry, Diddy, I.." said Dixie as she sighed, and then added, "I never imagined you had this kind of stuff. Sorry for everything…" Dixie proceeded to leave, it was not her intention to make her boyfriend sad; but Diddy interrupted her by grabbing her hand.
"It's okay, Dixie, you didn't know. Anyway, it doesn't matter anymore…" Diddy said through tears, and he added, "I miss them so much, and I really would like to see them again, I still hope that will happen..."
The young monkey proceeded to hug Dixie, and she reciprocated, comforting him. "Dixie... since I'm with you, I feel that finally, after such a long time, I actually feel better; thank you…"
She smiled, enjoying the warm embrace of her boyfriend.
"It's okay, Diddy; I'll always be here to listen to you and help you, that's a promise," said the young chimpanzee, subsequently kissing Diddy's lips.
Although the pair of apes had kissed before, this one turned out to be quite special, for some reason they didn't want to stop, as if they simply wanted to be kissing forever; Diddy's tail started to wag, he really enjoyed having this moment with Dixie, his special girl.
Finally, for as long as both of them could hold their breath, Dixie and Diddy had finished kissing. The latter started wiping away his tears, and finally the smile that characterized him so much had returned. The young monkey started caressing Dixie's face, admiring both the outer and inner beauty of his girlfriend, making her blush a little; and while this was happening, Diddy asked:
"So, do you still want to go out and have some fun, Dix?"
"Yeah…" said Dixie, glad to see Diddy happy again, with that tender smile that had made her fall in love with him so much.
Separating from their embrace, the pair of apes got ready to go out and started swinging through the jungle vines, looking at each other all the while. From that day on, something changed inside Diddy and Dixie: they were no longer just a happy couple, but also companions in both love and sentimentality.
