The tea is blood in the dark. Steam rises from the silver cup in white wisps that mingle with the blue candle's dying ember. The yellow and black eyes watch the tea as it cools. The bright blue eyes watch the Pau'an like always.
When the last of the wisps dissipate, the Pau'an brings the cup to his moon-white lips. The tea blots his teeth, but his lips remain pristine.
"It's perfect, Bren."
"Enjoy it, Desolous. Kopi tea is getting scarcer than sunlight here."
"Bloody Rebels."
"I think it's more the fault of economics than revolutionaries. It's not exactly in high demand in the Regency Worlds, so stores aren't stocking it anymore."
"How ridiculous! The people here have no taste," Desolous sniffs, earning a chuckle from Bren.
"You should comm the Empress and voice your displeasure on behalf of the Empire."
"Oh, please, I know you're resourceful enough to get my Kopi tea."
"Then, you'll have to double my candles."
"I think I can do better than that."
Bren tastes the coppery citrus on those lips for the last time.

For those not familiar with my naming of the Grand Inquisitor, I took the name of Desolous from a Pau'an Sith Lord from Knights of the Old Republic game because the New Canon hasn't offered him a real name. Here's hoping they one day will, but until then he's Desolous. Originally, this story was supposed to be longer and more of a Brendol retrospection upon various stages in his relationship with the Temple Guard/Grand Inquisitor, but it just wasn't going anywhere. Instead, I decided on a small final scene between the two before GI's death. In my stories, Brendol Hux and the Temple Guard/Desolous/Grand Inquisitor were an item until GI's death.
