Rain poured as the the sound of clashing steel rang in the air , raindrops bouncing off the black and white armor, metal and skin alike. They had been at this for hours now, but the two were still locked in an intense battle.
The battle was one that had already taken over half their day and all that they had to show for it was exhaustion. Both warriors had been relentless, each trying to make the other yield so that they could end this battle once and for all. Each had found a way to get in close, using their weapons or their legs to keep from getting hit as they fought. Neither was willing to give up.
Blood fall to the ground from their wounds , dripping onto the floor, mixing with sweat and rainwater. The two combatants were evenly matched as well, having fought like animals since they started this entire fight. But no matter how many times they fell, no matter how much blood they lost, both continued to press on.
After all neither of them had anything to live for or anything to go back to . So they were fighting until there was nothing left to fight. This battle would decide their. For a few moments after both of them finally came to a halt. Both looked tired, exhausted and bloody, but not one of them showed any signs of wanting to stop.
The two stood for a moment staring at each other, waiting for the other to try and attack next. To beg for mercy. To tell the other they had lost.
But none of those things happened, instead both stood there, watching each other with wary eyes.
"Why do we keep doing this ?" The female spoke, her voice low and strained , filled with pain and sadness. "Don't you think we have spilled enough blood?"
It wasn't long before he responded as well, his voice deep and raspy sounding. "You know why. It's because I don't have anything left to live for. We've both been fighting for years everyone else is dead ." He stopped suddenly, taking note of the look on her face. "Are… you afraid to die?" He asked, his voice softening slightly as he noticed her shaking.
For some reason she didn't answer right away, she just stood there staring at him for what felt like forever. She looked almost confused by something before she slowly shook her head. "That isn't true. Not anymore.." she paused again, taking a step forward, "I just… don't understand why. Why can't we just stop fighting?" A small frown appeared on her face as she stared at him.
"There has to be another way…." she whispered softly.
He took a step closer to her, his own frown growing. What was she even talking about? There was nothing else to fight for and yet here they were standing together. "What other way?" He asked confusedly.
She sighed quietly, looking looking directly into his eyes. "Maybe we should just call it quits now. No more fighting, no more dying. Let the world go on without us. Maybe then we can actually live for ourselves." Her voice trailed off, her head hanging as she turned around, facing away from him.
He watched as she walked off and sat down near the edge of the cliff, dropping her swords to the side, resting her hands on her knees. After a few moments he too sat down beside her. They sat in silence for several minutes just looking out at the water below. Finally he broke the silence.
"Cinder……" His voice broke as he said her name, barely above a whisper. "Do you really think that would work ?" His hand rose to his helmet, slowly pulling the fabric of it away from his face so he could stare at her without the protection of the visor.
Her gaze met his, and she gave him a slight smile. Slowly she reached over and placed her hand on top of his. "Of course I mean it Jaune. We've both seen so many people lose their lives. If we stop now, if we ever hope to change anything at all….we might as well just give up and go home. It would all be over." She sighed as she let her hand slide away from his and stand up, walking away from him. "And besides, I'm tired of hurting others especially you . You're the only person that truly knows me and yet we still fight against each other every single day. " She paused for a moment, turning around and holding out a hand towards him. "Come with me Jaune. Let's end this."
He hesitated for a moment. Did she honestly expect him to join her? After everything that she'd done? After everything he'd done as well? All of the things they'd done to each other. The people they hurt. The lives they ruined. The deaths they caused.
Finally he reached out and grabbed her hand, letting her pull him up to his feet. With that they set out to begin anew, determined to find another way.
