"Elphaba!" A voice boomed from the next room.
She jumped and she almost dropped the plates she was holding.
"Coming father" she responded as she placed the plates down and walked swiftly to his room.
She was met by Frex sitting in his chair, with his arms lying comfortably on the arm rests.
"Sit, we have something to discuss" he requested, pointing to the chair opposite him. His eyes barely even lifting to look at her.
Elphaba did the same as she sat down on the uncomfortable chair.
"We will be travelling to the vinkus tomorrow, please pack a bag with anything of importance" he told her, now looking straight forward at her face.
She furrowed her eyebrows in confusion.
"Why? I thought you didn't like them, what do you call them again? Oh uncultured and arrogant winkies?" She responded, smirking slightly.
"Now is not the time for this childish behaviour Elphaba. There has been an arrangement, you will marry the prince of vinkus and become their princess" he delivered the important piece of news, his face barley changing.
Her mouth fell open and her stomach churned, how could she be the next governor whilst being the princess of vinkus, she didn't even want to get married.
"But how will I be—" she started but was quickly cut off.
"Nessa will take over as governor when needed" Frex interrupted, knowing what she was going to ask
Elphaba bit her lip, suppressing her anger and disappointment.
"I don't want to get married and go live with strangers, I want to stay here with nessa" she protested, her hands were starting to shake.
"I'm sorry elphaba but this is for the best, now you may leave" he apologised but there was still no twinge of emotion from him, he turned around as soon as he dismissed her.
She trudged back to the kitchen and put the plates away and then retreated to her room, making her way there quickly to try and avoid talking to anyone.
Her long green arms reached for the green bottle under her pillow and she held it close to her chest.
"Mama" Her lips trembled as she continued to fight back tears.
The tears would burn her fragile skin, being a dead giveaway of the many emotions she was feeling.
None of this would be happening if she didn't exist, she was a curse. Why else would her father sell her off to vinkus.
It made her wonder whether her mother ever loved her. She didn't remember.
Did they even know of her green skin? Her water allergy? Her magical abilities? Her hearing difficulties?. Surely they wouldn't want her for long once they realised how much of an inconvenience she would be.
She threw some items of clothing and some books into a suitcase, she didn't own many things that would be much use to her anymore.
Her mothers bottle stayed sitting right in her left hand.
It was then that she just flopped onto the bed and she let out a deep sigh.
Her body curled up into a ball. Making herself as small as possible.
—
Her body jolted awake and she looked up to see a small girl standing over her.
Once she recognised it was Nessa she forced a smile which faded quickly as she her eyes caught the sun beaming from the window.
"Good morning Fabala" Elphaba heard as she turned her hearing aids on after carefully putting them in.
"Father told me to wake you up" Nessa continued as she gingerly sat down on sisters bed.
She was always careful not to lose her balance, she had no arms to break a fall.
Elphaba stared at her.
She didn't want to leave her, she just hoped that she knew that she wasn't doing this at her own will.
"Fabala I'm not a baby anymore" the four year old huffed.
Elphaba only squeezed her tighter, she was still so small.
She was only just starting to fill out a little more, she had always been frail and skinny.
"I'm sorry Nessa but you'll always be like a baby to me….I think I'll just have to stay here and look after you forever" she teased her younger sister as she tickled her.
She squealed and green hands wrapped around her swiftly to make sure she didn't fall.
"Elphaba? Are you okay?" She heard a voice break her trance.
"Oh—yes, yes I'm fine Nessie" the green skinned girl replied, standing up from the bed.
The next couple of hours seemed to be a blur between getting washed and dressed and saying goodbye to Nessa and Nanny
There were a lot of tears but not from Elphaba, she couldn't cry. It would only make the split harder especially for her beloved sister.
"Chin up Elphaba, Nanny will distract her. I'm sure she'll forget about this in a few days" a cold voice broke the awkward silence.
Elphaba swallowed hard.
Is that really how much she would be missed? They would forget about her in a few days?.
She stared out of the carriage window, avoiding responding to her father.
It was going to be a long journey.
