Chapter 1: Laurens
I was in South Carolina the day the British surrendered. I returned to my camp after stealing some cannons, and I heard loud cheering up ahead. As I came closer, a horde of people closed in on me.
"We won, we won!" my good friend Parker yelled as he wrapped me in a bear hug. I cheered along with everyone else, and we stampeded into the field to bask in our glory.
That was when we saw them. A group of redcoats were retreating, weapons at their sides, heads hung, muttering to one another.
"Yeah bitches, we won! How's your - wait - no one's - king gonna feel about this one?" I shouted. The others whooped loudly, and the tallest redcoat, about 6'8, turned to face me.
"You dare insult your former leader that way?" he thundered.
"Yeah, I dare, what the hell's wrong with that?" I said, staring straight into his soulless eyes. He scoffed and looked to the other redcoats, who nodded simultaneously. He turned back to me and my crew, and made to pull something out of his bag, and before I knew it, a two-foot rifle was pointed at my chest.
It all happened so fast. There's no way I'll ever be able to remember everything, but here's what I do remember:
The tall redcoat fired, and I was shoved out of the way by Parker, who took the bullet straight to the ribs. A female soldier I barely knew scooped up Parker, who was bleeding heavily on the ground, in one arm, and wrapped her other arm around me. Two of her friends ran up and took Parker, leaving us free to move faster. Everyone else had taken out their guns and began shooting at the redcoats. I didn't want to think about my friends who were injured and dying trying to save me. I just kept running, focusing on the possibility of getting to live another day, of getting to see Herc, Laf, and Alex's faces again.
"I'm doing this for you guys," I thought as visions of their faces flooded my mind. I dove into my tent, the girl who brought me here coming in straight after.
"That was a close call," she sighed. "I'm Alex Hamilton, or Alexandria, if you must I'm Alexander's older sister. Who are you?"
"John Laurens. Pleasure to meet you."
"Same... wait, are you John Henry Laurens?" she asked in awe.
"I am, why?" I was getting very skeptical.
"My brother talks about you all the time in his letters," she paused before continuing; "I'm gonna go check on Parker. Stay in here, I'll be back in fifteen minutes."
I just sat there in silence. So Alexander had a sister... why hadn't he told me? As I was trying to comprehend everything, Alexandria came back in and said, "Parker's dead."
