Tony picks up the champagne bottle and his glass and walks over to the fireplace and sits down in one of the chairs. Angela follows with her own glass and sits down in the other.

"So we both want to know what we are to each other?" Tony begins.

"That is the question."

"A very complex one."

"Or a very simple one."

Tony chuckled. "I don't think there is anything simple about our relationship."

"Yeah, I guess you do have a point." Angela smiled.

"I mean think of everything that has happened since I became your housekeeper. You kissed me on your birthday…"

"You kissed me!"

Tony rolled his eyes. "That's up for debate Miss Lost Weekend. But, let's table that discussion for now."

"Hey, you're the one that mentioned that particular moment first. And there were a lot of things that happened before."

Tony nodded. "Like Michael coming back." he cast his eyes down.

"Tony I'm still so sorry about that."

Tony picked his head back up and looked at her. "Why? Angela, you have nothing to be sorry for. It was like I told you not many people get a second chance at their marriage. But, you did."

"True. But, I shouldn't have let him kick you and Sam out."

"He didn't. I mean yeah he did. But he had a point. The three of you needed to be a family. Sam and I would have just been in the way."

"Tony! You and Sam were never in the way! We missed you. The house wasn't the same."

"Really?" Tony grinned.

"Yes, really! I know you had been living here for only a short time but something felt off. It wasn't the happy and carefree home that I was used to."

"Well it wasn't always happy and carefree," he reminded her. "I mean I did see you naked-accidently of course!- I had your jag painted in a color that you hated"

"I didn't hate it that much."

"I know, considering the fact that you never got it repainted." he laughed.

"Oh, I will… someday. But, it's okay for now."

"I knew you would like it."

Angela shook her head. "Okay, so how else wasn't this a happy and carefree home?"

"Well there was the time I threw that louse Jim Peterson out . And I'm still not sorry for that. I mean I am sorry that I embarrassed you in front of your colleagues. But, I will never be sorry for protecting you and your reputation."

Angela smiled. "You've been protecting my reputation since the first night."

"Oh yeah. When I thought you were being attacked."

"That and when you convinced me that I didn't need crunchy crawlers."

"And I was right. All they are are empty calories."

"Or when you told that Professor that you wouldn't go out with her."

"Well she did make that lewd comment."

"And you told her that I was 'good people.' "

"You are. You are one of the best people I have ever known. I still can't thank you enough for helping me clean out my Dad's apartment. Let's face it, not many bosses would take time off from their job and help out like you did."

"I just knew how hard it would be for you. And sometimes it's easier to have someone there helping you that isn't emotionally attached."

"Yeah, it did." he gazed into the fireplace for a few moments. His eyes filled with tears as he remembered that day. Especially when he finally opened his Christmas gift that had been sitting there for a year. His Father's pocket watch. He also remembered Angela telling him that he had locked his Father's memory in the apartment and that it was time to bring him to Connecticut so he could be with his family.

Angela noticed his eyes and held out her hand. He slid his in hers and they sat silently for a few minutes until he got himself under control.

"So, I guess one of the things we are are friends." she picked their conversation back up.

"Good friends."

"Yeah, good friends."

"But, is that all we are? I mean we are employer and employee and yes friends but I don't know sometimes I think in a different time and place we could be more."

"Really you do?"

"Yeah, if I didn't work for you and if Sam and Jonathan weren't involved."

"Wait a minute! Do you think they would object if we started dating?"

"No, not at all. I think they would be very happy. After all, Jonathan did set us up for Valentine's day because he wanted us to get married."

"And Sam was disappointed when you told Mother and her that it wasn't us at Kissing Rock."

"Yeah, she was. But, the thing is I can't gamble with her future or her wellbeing. Jonathan's too."

"What do you mean?"

"I mean, that night in the hotel at Jonathan's camp after you told me that you were Ingrid. I won't lie. I was tempted. I do think things could be good between us the way they aren't. And if we didn't have the kids to consider, that night might have taken a whole different turn and we might even have started dating."

"You really think so?"

"Yeah, maybe. And the thing is if it were only the two of us involved and it didn't work out it would have only affected us. I'm not saying it wouldn't hurt, But, we're adults. Sam and Jonathan well their lives would have been turned upside down. Sam and I would probably have to go back to Brooklyn."

"And Jonathan would have lost the best Dad he has ever had."

"Oh come on Angela. Michael is his Dad."

"He may be biologically. But, you have been more of a Dad to him in every way it counts since the moment you convinced him to take his snake upstairs because it doesn't pay his allowance."

"Yeah, that was good advice if I do say so myself."

"It was great advice."

"And Sam would have lost you. I know things were rocky for a while."

"Like when she ran away and Jonathan went with her?"

"Yeah, and you had your first bar room fight." he laughed at the memory of Angela and Teresa rolling around on the floor.

"It wasn't that funny!"

"Yeah, it was. Especially when Mrs Rossini and the kids caught you."

"Can we get off this please?"

"Okay, okay. Look, all I meant is that you have been good for Sam. You are good for her. I honestly don't know where she would be without your guidance."

"Thank you Tony. And you know I feel the same about you and Jonathan."

"Yeah, so that is why I pulled away that night. I just couldn't take a chance like that. I can't take a chance like that. I need to protect our children. We need to protect our children."

Angela smiled at his use of the word 'our'

"You're right we do need to protect our children."

He smiled at her. "While we're on the subject of our children. There is something I have been wanting to ask you."

"What is it?"

"Well, like I said you are good for Sam and the thing is I know she loves you."

"I love her too."

He nodded. "And that is why I was wondering if anything ever happened to me.."

"Like what? Tony. you're scaring me!"

Tony rubbed his hand over his face. "I'm not trying to scare you or anything. I just wanted to know that if I were to well die if you would take care of her?"

Angela's eyes filled with tears. "Tony, are you asking me to be Sam's guardian?"

"I am. I just want and need to know that she'll be okay if I ever die. Not that I'm planning to for a long , long, long time." he chuckled.

"Tony. I would be honored."

"Thank you Angela."

"No, thank you for trusting me with her."

"Well, thank you for trusting me with Jonathan."

"Well, it was like I said at the P.T.A. I trust you with the most precious thing in my life. And you are the best thing that has ever happened to us."

"I feel the same way. I honestly don't know where Sam and I would be without you. You opened your home to us."

"Well, I almost didn't. I was really close to throwing you out. But, then I saw how taken Jonathan was with you and my heart went out to Sam after Mother told me about Marie."

"Wait a minute! You mean it wasn't my charm that got me hired?!"

Angela rolled her eyes. "You wish! But, seriously all I could see was this little girl who had lost her mom. And then you said that you wanted her to have a safe place to grow up."

"And I said that maybe you needed us."

"Yeah, and Jonathan said that it was okay with him."

"And then Mona said that there was the deciding vote."

"Well that and when you put your arms around the kids and the three of you smiled at me. I have to admit you all were very cute."

"See! I was right. It was my charm!"

"Tony, I said the three of you!"

"Okay, okay. But I will forever be grateful that you took a chance on me. That you gave me a chance. I know I haven't always been the most subtle employee."

Angela laughed. "You got that right. But maybe that was what this house needed. What I needed."

"So, I was right. You did need us."

"We did."

"And Sam and I needed you too."

"Yeah, and here we are. Two years later. Can you believe it?"

"Sometimes yes. Sometimes no."

"It has been an amazing two years"

"That it has." He picks up the champagne bottle and fills both their glasses.

"So here's to the last two years, to our crazy unconventional family, and maybe someday to us."

She smiles and clinks her glass against his.

"Happy Anniversary Tony."

"Happy Anniversary Angela."

They smiled at each other and then sat back in their chairs the memories of the last two years cocooning them like a warm blanket.
