And again spelling and grammar are not my strongest suit so any inaccuracies I apologise.

Some Kind Of Tomorrow.

Chapter 6-More Than Meets The Eye.

Isabella and Tommy finally put their cards on the table as Isabella and Bruce begin their final showdown. Isabella is presented with a choice in which there is no easy ending.

For a moment he stared at her.

The wind was blowing her hair around her face and into her face and her dress was grey and simple. Other than her earrings she had no jewels on her and her feet were clad in simple boots. She looked so utterly simple compared to the gold dress she had sparkled in the previous night that Tommy could almost understand why she had been able to get down here without being spotted.

She was still the most beautiful creature that had ever walked the earth.

At least to him.

He had no idea how she had gotten under his skin so fast in such a short amount of time and the fact was that there was nobody he could ask. Fabrizio and Helga were together but there was nothing stopping them from forming an attachment, from loving each other , from being with each other when this ship docked in New York. For him there was as somehow he really couldn't see Bruce Ismay letting him in marry his niece with his blessing.

And it wasn't even as if he had Jack to talk to because Jack had disappeared somewhere and couldn't be found. Tommy knew that it was due to that Rose woman and there was a reason why when Jack was going around with a face like a smacked arse and it was not going to be good.

All in all it was not at all encouraging. Plus…she could come down here and see him if she wanted. There was no way in hell he could anywhere near her regardless of what he wanted. And he wanted quite a bit.

He wanted everything.

"Hello Tommy" she said again and he realised that now was the time to speak back to her.

"Hello Isabella" he said. There was no point in going with her title. At this point when all he could think about was kissing her and holding her he didn't think it mattered at all. At least not to him. None of it mattered to him.

She came and stood next to him and looked out over the dark ocean.

"Goodness it's beautiful out here is it not?"

"Yes" he said turning to see the sea. It was dark and other than the sound of the water it was hard to tell they were even at sea. There was nothing ahead of the ship as 'She' (ships were always called She, he was told) ploughed through the water gracefully and there was a sense that nothing could disturb this moment. There was noting but a big creamy moon on the horizon and a smattering of stars but as they were heading deeper and deeper into the Atlantic Ocean (helpfully pointed out to him by Bridget in her very battered geography book) the night seemed to get colder. Soon he was sure that even taking a smoke at night was going to have him burrowing into his brown jumper and coat.

"It seems like everything and anything is possible."

As soon as the words came out he could have thrown himself overboard. Granted she was here, she had come to see him but for all he knew it was to tell him to fuck off and never darken her life again. There was always a very good chance that she had spent the day not thinking about him, at least not in the all encompassing way that she had dominated his thoughts and dreams.

And he knew what that sounded like. What he sounded like. Tommy had never thought that he was the type of man to pant after a girl after just one meeting never mind a rich one who he had often dismissed as empty headed nitwits who hadn't a thought in their head other than their hair or their jewels or their pretty dresses. And he had never been one to believe in the concept of love at first sight. And yet here he was, slowly re-evaluating everything and anything that he had believed in all because of Isabella Ismay.

"Indeed" she said smiling. "I wanted to come and see you. I did not know if I would be welcome"

"You are" he said assuring her with a smile. "You are always very welcome to come and see me."

She smiled and he was struck again at how the lines seemed to fall off her face. It was not like she was weathered down by age or grief or sadness but she had seemed like she was drowning. Almost as if something was dragging her down and she couldn't fight her way to the surface. Tommy knew what feeling like that was like. He also knew what it could do to a person. When Isabella smiled it was like all of that faded away and she looked like a happy seventeen year old girl on the cusp of life and desperate to live it.

"You said that you were here if I wanted to escape…even…for a little while…" she said pausing a couple of times and then she tucked her bottom lip between her teeth and Tommy felt a pulse of something, some unnameable emotion, he reached out and gently ran his hand down the length of her cheek. She turned into the touch with one elegant gesture of her neck and her hair spilled down her back and onto his hand. They were close again, close to the point where there was very little space between them and she looked at him her eyes wide and bright in the dark space of the sea that surrounded them.

He felt that same pulse again deep within him and he knew it was desire. He desired her above all others. He loved her above all others. He needed and wanted her in a way he had never needed or wanted anyone before. He was twenty, she was seventeen, they were both young enough for such attraction to be dismissed and yet Tommy was sure that he would never forget this.

"God I love you" he said uncaring of the consequences and then his mouth was down on hers and he was kissing her tilting her head back so that he could get more access as her hands slid around his shoulders and pulled him close. It wasn't so passionate it could be considered indecent as several kisses of his in the past had been nor was it so soft that it wasn't really anything. It was gentle and it was perfect and it was passionate all at the same time.

She pulled back and smiled though this time it did not meet her eyes exactly.

"What?"

"Did you mean that?"

"What…that I love you? Yes"

For he did love her and it was easy for him to say that now she was standing in front of him her hands gripped on the rails of the ship as if she was clinging to them to keep her afloat.

"Tommy…it's not that I don't…"

"You're not ready yet" he surmised. He was not surprised. Not really. Not deep down. Yet he could not help but feel a sense of bone crushing disappointment.

"It's not that I don't love you or that I don't think I can be with you. But being with you is giving up…everything like…"

"Your Uncle?"

"Yes"

"He doesn't love you, you know" he said as accurately as he could. "You told me as much remember? Besides I've seen him even in a newspaper he looks colder than the water beneath us. He'd never stick around to help someone onto a lifeboat he'd be more preoccupied with getting on one himself. Do you honestly think that he would ever protect you or choose you or love you the way I can?"

"No" she said shaking her dark head.

"No but until we get to New York there is nowhere on this ship that he cannot find us. And the consequences for you would be far worse for me and…and though I love you even after one night which is still so mind consuming…If me loving you puts you in any kind of danger then I won't do it"

"I'd rather stare down the danger together than alone" he said stubbornly. She sighed and rolled her eyes but honestly what did he expect? He had fallen head over arse for this woman in less than a day and here she was telling him not only that she was also in love with him too but very impractical reasons that they couldn't be together and completely ignoring the rather practical ones that in the world that still went on outside of this ship existed.

"I'd rather be standing with you at your side than watch as you fade into the darkness. And you will fade Isabella, I won't convince you to run away with me if your not ready to do so but in two days this ship will dock in New York and then all of your excuses come down to a single moment"

"Oh you think there excuses do you?" she asked flaring up at once and even angry she was so, so beautiful.

"Of course I do. You came down here to tell me something you've told me that you love me despite the fact that you don't understand how you can love someone so fast and then you've told me a load of bull about why we can't be together and I am telling you here and now that to me, none of it, none of it matters."

She watched him for a moment and then shook her head.

"This was a mistake"

Tommy thought bitterly that smacking him might have hurt less.

"Then go. But this…" he gestured between the two of them. "This feeling of a lack of self control, a lack of understanding and planning and all the rest of it, this is what I have been feeling since I saw you on that deck, this is what I have been feeling times ten since I held you in my arms last night and this is what I will be feeling I imagine until the day I die. So you think on that princess and come to me when you know you can't live without me. Because I sure as hell know being trapped between all these guard rails that I know I will struggle to live without you. Come and find me. And then see if the risk is enough for you to leave the cold house of a man whose never loved you and take a chance on a man who does"

He turned to walk away but before he went he turned back, his hand slid around her waist and he pulled her towards her and then he kissed her. It was not gentle or romantic or whimsical. It was hard passion between the two of them. He tried to put a lot of things he didn't know how to say into that kiss and perhaps she understood them because she kissed back as if her life depended on it, as if she was trying to force herself to make the decision there and then.

If it was about the material things she'd be giving up or the social side of it then perhaps Tommy might understand it but it was the fact she was staying because of Ismay…and with that thought he broke apart from her wrenching away as if he was wrenching away his own soul in the process.

Dear God he loved her. He had known her less than two days and already he was so deeply in love with her, her looks, her passion, her spirit, the way she seemed to fit so nicely into his arms…he was so…so in love with her that he didn't think he could stop taking the path that led directly to hell nor was he sure he wanted to. Isabella Ismay was it for him and that…that was a dangerous path to go down and an even more dangerous thought to acknowledge.

Instead he turned around and left her there standing on the side of the Steerage deck staring after him. She'd find her way back to her own class one way or the other and who knows? Perhaps that would be the last time that they would see each other again.

His hands shook and his throat clenched and for the first time in his life as he stomped back to his cabin he found himself praying to something he had long ago stopped believing in that the girl in the golden dress who had burned so brightly in his arms would step out of the shadows and take a chance on him before the fire in her was doused out for good.

And the course of true love never did run smooth did it?

Hopefully the next chapter will come sooner rather than later.

Next Chapter- It's Sunday (and the last sunrise Titanic will ever see) and Isabella demands answers leading Bruce Ismay to finally begin to start telling the story of what happened to his sister, Isabella's mother.
