Hi, so here is another chapter. Let me know what you think and I will do my best to get the next chapter to you soon as possible. I can confirm that there will be a small sequel just to close off this couple and I that is in the works.
I really enjoyed writing this chapter and saving an innocent life and also getting out my frustration about those awful iron bars.
Disclaimer-Nothing here is mine just the character of Isabella.
Please Read and Review
And again. No disrespect intended against the wonderful real life people involved in the Titanic.
Some Kind Of Tomorrow
Chapter 14-We've Got To Get Out Of This Place.
Tommy, Isabella, Fabrizio and Helga come across Jack and Rose but are separated by iron bars. With time running out they must band together and to try and find a way out of the bowls of steerage. In doing so another innocent life is saved as well.
"Why am I not in the least bit surprised that you know where the master of arms room is?"
That was Isabella. Tommy turned and flashed her a grin. Isabella was aware that she must look a mess. Out of all of them she was the one who perhaps most struggled with the running around the ship. They had seen on their way down several first class woman and children being loaded into boats. They had gone in through the first class entrance though they'd had to duck several scandalised looking people in suits and ties and more than once they'd had to drag Helga away from that damn clock that seemed to tick time.
It was only as Isabella with one impervious eyebrow threw the poor elevator man out that they clattered down to the steerage decks.
"Because I'm Irish love. We tend to want to know where the coppers are going to be when we arrive"
Isabella let out a laugh that she thought was a rather good way of hiding hysteria. She thought that she was going to be sick and it wasn't just because of all the running that she was doing. It was obvious to everyone though nobody had said it out loud that Titanic was in trouble.
She was sinking.
And she was sinking fast.
It was written on the faces of the crew, it was written on the faces of the more practical passengers it was written on the faces of nearly everyone and anyone other than the bastards that were going on the lifeboat and had she not met Tommy, Isabella knew that she would be one of them. One of those woman in her hat and coat being loaded onto a boat with other woman all of them confident that this was a drill and that the hot water would be running in their room and a cup of tea would be waiting for them. Even now she did not know where her Uncle was, she did not even know where Trudy was and she wanted to sink to the floor and never get up again because the terror and the guilt and the grief was beginning to hit her in waves.
Thousands were going to die.
It was a fact that she had recognised and she was equally aware that Tommy, Fabrizio and Helga had not. She did not know if Jack had realised before he had tugged Rose back to first class but she knew that Rose would know. Rose had been the one on that tour of the ship on their first full day who had mentioned the lack of lifeboats and it had been her Uncle who had laughed off the thousands of lives by saying that this was the ship that could not sink.
But every ship was sinkable.
Isabella had known that. Rose had known that. Little Daniel had known that.
And her Uncle had not.
Either that or he had not bothered to care. Isabella was honestly not sure what was worse.
"We should be fine" Helga said smiling. "We can save Jack and Rose and then make to the boats. My parents should be there as well"
Isabella smiled but she honestly did wonder just how much of what Helga was saying she actually believed.
Tommy gripped her hand tighter and Isabella drew comfort from that and that alone. She wanted desperately to press against him and go back to the hours where she was still in bed with him her arms wrapped around his body and feeling him move within her. Even now she thought that she could still close her eyes and feel the imprint of his hands against her hip and the smell of him. It was hard to reconcile that delightful sensual moment with the growing nightmare that this was rapidly turning into.
"I will get you out of this" he murmured as they waited for another white coated steward to pass. "I promise you I will get you out of this"
"I do not care about me."
And she meant it because if there was a chance that they would get to a boat, she and Rose and Helga would get a seat. It would be Tommy and Jack and Fabrizio and all the other men that they would be clinging to whatever they could as Titanic went under the icy water.
"Well I do you bloody menace. I didn't go through hell and back finding you only for you to die on me"
She grinned. She could not help it. She really could not. Tommy even in a crisis was so himself that she felt if possible that she was in love with him even more. She had been dealing in the false currency of vanity, lust and a ferocious appetite for scandal and gossip and all along there had been a truer, purer currency of pure gold that she had just never been able to reach out and touch.
"Coast clear" Fabrizio muttered and then they were gone, down another long corridor and to Isabella's horror she saw iron bars.
She skidded to a stop pulling her hand out of Tommy's and shook one of them.
Iron bars. Her Uncle had put in Iron bars to stop the classes from mixing. And on the night that the ship was sinking and it would be every man, woman and child for themselves he had locked them in like animals to drown while his rich friends and their wives could get on the small amount of boats he had provided for cost cutting purposes.
She turned to see Tommy, Fabrizio and Helga all looking at her as if she was mad to stop. Fabrizio was looking anxious, Helga confused and Tommy full of concern and she noticed that neither one of them had acted as if the presence of iron bars separating them from the rest of the ship—from the rest of the world was something to be surprised about.
And of course why would they be. They of all people were used to it.
And suddenly she was so angry she could not breathe. She was angry with the world true, she was angry with society even more so but the fury, the direction of her fury was focused on her Uncle. The man who had made her beg and scrape for every crumb of affection she had ever gotten. The man who had made her feel like she was the problem, the man who had condemned so many people to death and the man who had made her mother and father's life hell to the point where if she did go looking for him there was a very good chance that he would never want to see her again. Another life ruined all because of the desires of rich men and one man in particular.
Bruce Ismay.
And then suddenly she was screaming.
She was banging on the bars and screaming and smashing her fists together and swearing and feeling.
Oh what she was feeling there and then was years of emotion she had bottled down so that it was all coming out now. All the slights and the neglect and the small pinches and prodding and poking and she wanted nothing more to do than to keep screaming even though she was sounding mad.
Suddenly she could quite understand Rose's desperation.
"ISABELLA!"
It was Tommy. He had grabbed her shoulders and had shook her hard and rough and it took Isabella a moment to realise it.
He was looking at her as if he was terrified and it took Isabella a moment to realise that the man was terrified of her. Fabrizio and Helga did not look much better but there was something in Helga's eyes that spoke of she too understanding that sometimes all you wanted to do was scream and yet you couldn't find the words.
"Sorry"
"Sor—what the hell was that? You nearly had the entire ship coming down on us"
"I just…bars…Tommy. He put in fucking bars"
Tommy looked at her utterly non-plussed and was that not the most tragic thing of all? He did not understand that there was something so horribly and utterly wrong with the fact that there were bars keeping his 'kind' away from hers.
"Tom—"
"I heard you at the other end of the ship" came a voice behind her and she turned to see Rose standing there. Jack mercifully was behind her and Rose caught Isabella's eye and there was something in the blue eyes that met Isabella's green ones that told her that Rose too understood exactly what had made her scream with anger and frustration. But Isabella looked further and she knew what she saw…
One look at Rose told her that the ship was going down and going down fast. Rose and Jack were soaked. Rose had abandoned her pink coat and was dressed in her lavender silk dress which much like Isabella's blue one had been put on for ease after an intense bout of lovemaking. Rose's lips were blue and Jack was shivering and they both had a look of utter desperation on their faces.
"Shit" Tommy said letting go. "Oh shit, She really is going down isn't she?"
"Yeah" Jack said through chattering teeth. "And she's gonna go down fast. We need to get out of this place and get out fast. They've locked us all in—"
Isabella felt a noise escape her and she closed her eyes. Helga whimpered.
"We can't get near anyone" Jack said. "I saw woman and children, Helga I didn't see your parents but we can't go back and look, we'd never get back up. Isabella—can you give permission for them too-?"
He trailed off as Isabella shot him a look.
"Jack if I had the power I would but I do not. They would not listen to me and even if I could command the power of my name my Uncle will now know about Tommy and…" she trailed off.
"One thing at a time" Rose said. "We need to get this door open."
"Uncle Jack?"
They all fell silent, Rose and Jack turned. There in a neat skirt and shirt, her doll clutched in her hand was Cora Cartmell.
"Jesus, Mary and Joseph" Tommy breathed.
"Cora" Jack said breathing through his nose in surprise.
"What—what are you doing here?"
"Mother wouldn't leave the cabin so father sent me ahead. He said to find someone I know and stay with them until we get on the boats and then he and Mother will come and find me afterwards. I couldn't see anyone or anything but then I heard screaming"
"Christ" Isabella muttered. She had not been that bad surely?
"Alright" Jack said. He turned. "We need to get this door open now. I did see Olav and I did see Sven back there. As soon as they know what's going on they can all come out this door."
Tommy whirled around. Back against he door was a bench.
He caught Fabrizio's eye. The Italian nodded. Isabella and Helga moved to the opposite side of the wall and Rose took Cora to the back of where she was stood. Tommy and Fabrizio rammed it twice and then Jack managed to do something with his side of it and then with a bang that would have awoken the dead Isabella watched as the iron bars sprung open. Cora climbed deftly over the bench smiling as if this entire thing was an adventure. Rose staggered over and fell. Isabella hugged her and felt how cold her skin was. Oh the water was going to be cold when they all entered it.
And they would enter it. Isabella could not see anyway that they could possibly survive this night. Even if they could get out of the bowls of steerage, if they could get to the top deck and even if they could get to the lifeboats…three of them would not be able to get on it. And she thought about Mary and Declan and Bridget and Daniel and their mother and the Cartmells and the conversations that they had in steerage and how all of them were here because this was the Ship of Dreams that was going to make everyone and anyone who sailed on Her rich and now she was going to end up at the bottom of the ocean and some of the best people in the world in all classes were going to be with her.
"Come on" Jack said, he banged once on the wall and that was enough by his admission for people to turn around and see that despite the crew's permission there was one other way that everyone could have a fair chance. He grabbed Rose's hand and Tommy held out his arms for Cora to climb into. Helga shot one anguished look but before Fabrizio could say anything Jack was turning to her.
"Helga we have to go. We don't have time, we'd never be able to get to them it's manic down there. Hopefully they see what's going on and they get out and we can all meet up again but Helga WE HAVE TO GO NOW"
Helga looked at him her eyes wide with tears but she nodded. Fabrizio tugged one arm around her and Isabella turned to see Cora in Tommy's arms. She wondered for one second if Tommy would ever hold their daughter that way and then she shook her head feeling the curls loosen. She yanked out the hair clip and threw it into the corner. They were all going to die and personally she wanted to die with her hair loose. One last meaningless bit of spite to her Uncle who had always told her to wear her hair up.
It could go down with the ship.
God knows everything else that had ever been Isabella Ismay was going down with it.
At this point Isabella Ismay was going down with it. A final tribute to Bruce Ismay. The career that he had loved and the niece he had hated.
Oh how nice and neat this was!
"Darlin"
"I know" she said turning her back on the piece of ivory and jade. "I know Tommy. Let's go. We've got to get out of this place"
And she turned her back on it all and gripped the hand of the man she loved tighter and as they were running Isabella thought as morbid a thought as it was that at least she had died knowing the kind of love her mother had and that actually instead of meeting her father when all of this was over it was her mother who would be waiting to see her in the next life as she and thousands of others became another casualty of the ambition of one man and his desire for validation.
It should not have made her smile.
But it did.
And there you go, I hope you like this chapter and I will do my best to bring you the next chapter sooner rather than later as always.
Next Chapter-Titanic is sinking fast. There is one lifeboat left. Rose makes a choice. Goodbyes are said and reality begins to sink in.
