First half of September 2063
At Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, the academic year has started. The weather that day was warm and sunny, so two male students were sitting on the grass with their tablets and notebooks open. The first man was doing exercises, diligently writing down the calculations in his notebook, while the second was leaning against a tree. With his hands behind his head, he was looking at his surroundings. Suddenly he turned to sit, crossing his leg and putting his hands in front of him.
"Look at that girl, Don! I have not seen her before!" He exclaimed in a low voice and pointed at the student, going down the path about one hundred feet in front of them.
Don looked in the direction his friend pointed out and saw a girl with pink shoulder-length hair. She has worn a white t-shirt, dark blue thigh-length shorts, and white sneakers. She probably had heard them because she looked in their direction for a moment, but then she shrugged and walked away, adjusting the big gray bag hanging from her right shoulder.
"She is quite pretty, but what about it?" he looked at his friend, who still had stared at that student.
"Would you not like to pick her up?" Jake turned his face to him "I think you would fit together!" he added, scrutinizing him.
"Are you trying to match me in again, Jake?" Don has irritated. That pink-hair student was the fifth girl Jack pointed him on within two weeks since they started a new semester. "Besides, how do you know if she's free? You said you don't know her!"
"How do you know if she doesn't?" his friend was not giving up "Anyway, you can always steel her, Don... " he shrugged.
"You're insane."
"You need a new girl, pal. Since you broke up with Rose, you're f***ing boring, though you're only 24!"
"Shut up, Jake!" Don get mad "I don't have time to get in relationships right now. I had to finish studying at my best and find a good job as quickly as possible. I have a loan, which I must pay off myself. There is no one to help me"
"Ok, Ok" Jake gloomed, remembering that his friend's parents had died and that his grandparents couldn't help him much. "Sorry. I will also do these exercises."
Second half of November 2063.
The last class that day has just finished. A pink-hair student lifted her bag with tablet and notebooks inside to her shoulder and then looked at her clock, which was telling 3:20 p.m. She sighed heavily. She had no workout or other activities that day, so she could go home, but she didn't want to go back to that empty place.
She lived alone because her parents had decided to rent a 'propriety' place to study for her, but although she knew they meant well, she didn't like it. She didn't want to live alone.
"If I had a roommate, it would be much better." She thought sadly.
"Maya!" she suddenly heard a harsh voice in her right ear and shuddered. "Why are you standing still? We have to go! Everyone left! The professor is looking at us!"
"Sorry, Liz!" She looked into the brown eyes of her friend. The girl was standing in front of her with hands on her hips and was staring at her. "I had pondered."
"I had noticed!" Liz said, casually tweaked her long, wavy, dark brown hair, and then went toward the exit, passing professor Brown who was looking at them impatiently. Maya followed her quickly.
They were walking down the corridor, decorated with many flowers, passing other students and teachers when Liz suddenly turned toward Maya and looked at her searchingly.
- Have you thought about someone special? She asked her inquisitively, which made Maya blink.
'Why had you thought that I had been thinking about anyone?"
"It's an early Friday afternoon, you know, so I figured you were going on a date like me."
"I don't have a boyfriend, Liz" Maya remarked coldly.
Even though she had known her for just a few weeks, her comments had already made her headaches. Of course, all those comments were made about the opposite sex.
"Don't you like anyone? Many nice boys are here around." The friend tried to drill down the topic, twisting around with outstretched arms.
"I didn't think about it" Maya rolled her eyes "I'm getting to know the university now. This is still a new place for me. Are you not interested in this?"
"I share my interests depending on the occasions." Liz laughed. "Now I'm thinking about tonight. I recommend it to you, too."
- Okey, Okey - she muttered and ran down the stairs they had just reached and turned right to the cloakroom for her warmly leather Ramones jacket. Liz joined her soon and took her knee-long dark gray coat.
- So then, Maya. I'm going back to the dormitory. I have to prepare for my meeting with Rob. β said friend, fastening the last button of her coat. β Cheers and have a nice afternoon. β Liz kissed her cheek and headed towards the university yard.
- Thanks, Liz, have a nice day! She stared at her friend until she left the building, then put on her jacket. But she didn't buckle it because she thought she would go to the next building. There was a library where she could study, among other people.
Three minutes later, she walked into her favorite room, decorated with many green plants, and looked around. The place was huge, but now all the dark brown wooden tables were occupied by students who wanted to study together. She heard their hushed voices as they exchanged ideas.
Only in the back right corner of the room was a table with two empty chairs, but even there was sitting someone. She hesitated a little, but she didn't want to search for another place, so she slowly walked over to the table.
"Sorry!" She said quietly, looking at a black-haired student in a gray hoodie, who was reading something on his tablet and taking notes in a notebook. When he looked at her, she added, "Only these chairs are empty. Can I sit down?"
An unreadable expression crossed his face, but he didn't mind.
"Sure, no problem." He agreed and quickly went back to taking notes. Maya pushed her chair back and sat down on it.
She looked at her neighbor. It seemed he was a few years older. He also looked a bit familiar. Suddenly, she recollect, she had seen him many times, here in the library. She thought he must be very ambitious and persistent if he took his responsibilities seriously. It made an impression on her.
"I'm Maya," she introduced herself, placing her head in her hand and staring at him. "Maya Thompson."
He seemed surprised but replied.
"Don Wei. Nice to meet you."
Maya smiled and looked at him for a moment.
"Wei? It's a Chinese name, isn't it?" - she noticed. "At my high school, I use to know a girl with the same name."
"My grandfather is from China." He explained shortly and went back to his notes. "Sorry, but I have to finish this."
"That's interesting," she got confused. "Nice to meet you too, Don. I will not bother you anymore. Have a nice studying."
"Thanks! Have a nice studying, too" She heard, taking the tablet and notes out of the bag.
Don was sitting at the library table and writing down the most relevant macroeconomic concepts he needed for his upcoming exam. He tried to focus all his thoughts on it, but the presence of this girl effectively disturbed him.
She came here half an hour after him and completely distracted him just after she had spoken to him. Her voice was so lovely and she was so charming with her olive color, bright skin, light pink hair, and carmine eyes.
He had known her by sight since Jack pointed at her at the beginning of this semester. Then he had seen her many times, and with each successive look at her, he liked her more and more, even if he refused to admit it to himself. The man had to focus on writing a thesis and doing many other duties before the end of his studies, so he didn't have time for new acquaintances. But he didn't be able to.
"So her name is Maya." Her name is as beautiful as she.
Don tried to return to the study of macroeconomics, but he failed. Instead of this, he took a look at her.
βIs something wrong?" She asked quietly, noticing his glance, and Don blushed a little. In spite of all, he had to focus on studying.
"No, nothing!" He answered, turning his look to the tabletop, and then took his phone. Despite everything finishing the university was more significant for him at that time.
"Are you already going? It's not my fault, I hope" Maya looked at him with a scare, but Don didn't answer her. Instead, he went to the exit fast, leaving the confused girl behind himself.
"See you!" she waved to him sluggishly. She he felt uncomfortable. That man didn't say no to her question, so he must been vexed she bothered him.
She stood up and also took her items from the table. At that moment she had no mood to study so she thought to back here the next day. She decided to go to the nearest cafeteria, serving winter tea and read one of the novels she had on her notepad. She sighed quietly and left the library.
