For now, on with the story

The next morning, it was a busy day at the local marketplace.

Shopkeepers were selling their goods, people were buying things, and a certain young thief and his dog were on the hunt for their breakfast.

Anakin sat on top of the roof of a stand selling fritters and baked goods while Artoo was on the ground to act as the diversion.

Anakin gave Artoo the thumbs up to get going.

"Try Aunt Mabel's famous apple fritters," called the salesman.

Artoo barked and did a begging trick.

The man chuckled and said, "Aren't you a talented little canine?"

Artoo did another trick, chasing his tail and catching attention as he also sniffed the fritters.

"Alright, but just one, boy." said the salesman, tossing the dog an apple fritter while Anakin swiped some Danishes and some of the fruit used for some pastries.

Artoo eventually took off and met his owner on the roof of another stand.

"Good boy, Artoo." said Anakin, petting his dog and getting out some blueberries. "Breakfast is served."

While the boy and his dog were enjoying their breakfast, a certain runaway princess was making her way through the market, and liked seeing life outside the palace.

People offered her various things that were up for sale, but Padme didn't buy anything. But she also ended up bumping into a Gungan named Jar Jar who'd been juggling for some kids. And he lost his balance, and his balls bonked him on the head, making the kids laugh.

"Ouchie!" said the gungan, rubbing his head.

"Oh, I am so sorry about that!" Padme said.

However, Padme soon had another noticer. Someone who suddenly admired her.

Anakin couldn't believe his eyes when he caught a glimpse of the disguised princess' face. Such a gorgeous smile she had, perfect brown hair, and the most unbelievable brown eyes he'd ever seen; somehow, she just made that common eye color shine.

"Wow..." gasped the street rat.

Artoo could see his owner was lovestruck and lost focus on everything else as he stared at the pretty girl.

Suddenly, closer to where Anakin and Artoo were hiding, Padme spotted a young boy reaching for some fruit.

"Oh, you must be hungry." Padme said. She reached into her bag for some credits, which she gave to the seller, and gave a fresh apple.

Anakin couldn't believe his eyes again. That girl just helped a poor boy she didn't even know. Beautiful and compassionate. A perfect combination.

"She must be an angel." Anakin sighed, leaning a bit too far and falling off the roof. "Whoa!"

Luckily, he landed in a big pile of clothes and blankets. Artoo barked as he jumped down and started digging through the stuff for his owner.

Anakin popped up with a blanket over his head.

"I'm over here, Artoo!" Anakin's voice called.

Anakin saw daylight again as someone pulled the blanket off his head.

"Are you okay?" said Padme.

Anakin lost himself for another moment as he got a closer look at this beautiful woman's face.

"Are you an angel?" he asked.

"What?" Padme giggled.

"An angel. Said to be the most beautiful creature in the world."

Padme chuckled and said, "You are a funny young man."

And she helped him up and out of the pile of clothes, Anakin finding he'd accidentally gotten into a blue jacket.

"Hey, I look good in blue." Anakin said, posing. But he took the jacket off and was about to take off with his dog, but winced as he felt a pain in his leg.

"Are you alright?" Padme asked.

"I'm fine- Agh!" Anakin winced again as he felt a pain in his ankle.

"You must've hurt yourself when you fell."

Padme had Anakin put his arm over her shoulder, and she helped him as he guided her down a path according to his instructions.

Meanwhile, in Palpatine's secret lair, Amedda was tiredly running on a spinning wheel to power up a storm maker to work a spell that would help them discover the Diamond in the Rough they needed to enter the Cave of Wonders.

"With all due respect, Chancellor," panted the blue hawk. "Could we not just wait for a real storm?"

"Save your breath, Amedda. Faster." Palpatine said.

The chancellor placed the king's diamond ring between two snake statues on an hourglass, ready for the spell to be cast.

"Yes, O mighty evil one." said Amedda, speeding up.

A bolt of lightning struck the diamond, the sand in the hourglass swirling about.

"Part, sands of time," sneered Palpatine. "Reveal to me the one who can enter the cave."

And the sands showed a vision of the one who could enter the cave.

In the vision was none other than Young Anakin, who was currently being helped into his home.

"Yes. There he is. My diamond in the rough."

"That's him?" said Amedda. "That's the clown we've been waiting for?"

Amedda then found himself caught in one of the wheels, just barely managing to escape with at least half his plumage.

"Let's have the guards extend him an invitation to the palace, shall we?"

Padme continued to help Anakin, and he kept a lookout.

"Almost there." Anakin said, starting to limp along a little. "I want to thank you for helping me home."

"Don't worry about it." smiled Padme.

"So, this is your first time in the marketplace, huh?" Anakin said, grabbing a long plank of wood and using it as a bridge to the other side of a ditch, which Artoo followed him across.

"Is it that obvious?"

"Well... you do kind of stand out." Anakin became a bit flustered by Padme fluttering her lashes, but he caught himself and said, "I mean, uh, you don't seem to know how dangerous Naboo can be. Though it is beautiful."

Artoo jumped as the plank of wood broke underneath his weight, Anakin catching his dog.

"Gotcha, boy." Anakin set the dog down.

Padme grabbed a long stick, and used it to flip herself over to the other side.

"I'm a fast learner," she smiled, tossing the pole to Anakin, whose jaw dropped.

Anakin started to walk a little, limping as his ankle still hurt a little, and he brought Padme into his house.

"Watch your head there." said Anakin.

"Is this where you live?" asked Padme.

"Yup. Just me and Artoo. We come and go as we please." Anakin said.

"That sounds fabulous."

"It's not quite as cozy as the orphanage was, but it's a roof over our heads."

"You're an orphan?"

"Yup. I aged out eight months ago. Couldn't find work anywhere. I've been a street rat since. But I always had Artoo."

Artoo whimpered and rested his head in his owner's lap as he elevated his hurt foot on a pillow.

Anakin used his power to pull back the curtain to show the view of the palace.

"And, while our house might not be much, it's got a great view." said Anakin.

Padme used some gauze she had in her bag to help Anakin's ankle heal.

"Wow. The palace looks pretty amazing, huh?" said Anakin, looking out at the view.

Padme looked down.

"Oh, it's wonderful." she said. She missed Vivian, but she knew if she went back, she'd be a prisoner again.

"I wonder what it would be like to live there, and have servants and valets." Anakin said.

"Oh, sure. People who tell you where to go and how to dress." Padme grumbled.

"It's better than here. You're always scraping for food and ducking the guards. And General Windu has had it out for me ever since I swiped a sandwich from his plate."

"You're not free to make your own choices."

"Sometimes you feel so..."

"You're just..."

"Trapped." The street rat and princess said in unison.

The two looked at each other in realization. Though they came from completely different worlds, they realized they had a lot in common.

Padme smiled at Anakin that beautiful smile.

Anakin cleared his throat and asked Padme where she was from.

"What does it matter?" said Padme. "I ran away and I am not going back."

"Really? How come?"

Padme sighed and said, "My father's forcing me to get married."

"That's... that's awful."

Artoo growled and he lay his head in the princess' lap.

"What?" Padme said.

"Oh, Artoo says that's not fair." Anakin said.

Artoo licked Padme's hand.

"Oh, he did, did he?" Padme chuckled, petting the dog's ears.

"Yeah, of course." Anakin said.

"And does Artoo have anything else to say?"

Padme was smart enough to know Anakin wasn't just translating what his dog was supposedly saying.

"Well, uh, he wishes there was something he could do to help."

"Hmm." Padme smiled again and fluttered her lashes as she got a little closer to Anakin. "Tell him that's very sweet."

Anakin and Padme both leaned closer to each other, but just before their lips could touch...

"Here you are." said a guard named Eeth Koth, entering the house.

And he wasn't alone either.

"They're after me!" said Anakin and Padme at the same time, standing up. Then they looked at each other. "They're after you?"

The guards cut through the wooden boards.

"My father must have sent them to-"

Padme was interrupted by Anakin.

"Do you trust me?" said the boy, offering his hand.

"What?" Padme looked at Anakin.

"Do you trust me?" he repeated.

"Yes..." Padme took Anakin's hand.

"Then jump!"

Anakin held Padme's hand, and they jumped out of the window together.

"Then jump!"

The two young ones landed in a soft pile of flowers, but Anakin was caught by General Windu.

"We just keep running into each other, don't we, street rat?" said Mace.

Artoo jumped on Mace again and started biting and chewing his robes.

While Mace was distracted, Anakin yelled for Padme to run.

"It's the dungeon for you, boy." said Guard Mundi, holding onto the boy.

"Get off me!" Anakin said, struggling.

"Let him go." Padme demanded.

"A street mouse, too?" said Mace. "They just keep multiplying, don't they?"

"Unhand him," said Padme, revealing her tiara. "by order of the princess."

The guards all bowed when they saw who it was.

"Princess Padme." Mace said. "Forgive me. Had I known it was you..."

"The princess?" Anakin gasped in disbelief.

"What are you doing outside the palace?" Mace asked Padme. "And with this street rat."

"That's not your concern." said Padme. "Do as I command. Release him."

"I would, Princess, except my orders come from Chancellor Palpatine. You'll have to take it up with him."

"Believe me, I will."

Later, as Palpatine was exiting his lair, he soon heard a familiar voice calling his name.

"Oh, Princess Padme." smiled Palpatine, bowing. "How may I be of service to you?"

"The guards just took a boy from the market, on your orders." explained the princess.

"Your father has charged me with keeping the peace in Naboo. The boy was a criminal."

"What was his crime?"

"Why, kidnapping the princess, of course."

"He didn't kidnap me. I ran away."

"Oh, dear." Palpatine feigned surprise. "Oh, how frightfully upsetting. Had I but known..."

"What do you mean?"

"Sadly, the boy's sentence has already been carried out."

"What sentence?" Padme was immediately scared.

"Death."

Padme gasped.

"By beheading."

"No."

Padme dropped herself into a chair.

"I am exceedingly sorry, Princess." said Palpatine, feigning empathy.

"How could you?" Padme glared at Palpatine, and ran off, weeping.

Palpatine looked at Amedda and said, "I think she took it rather well."

Padme knelt at the fountain in her garden, crying.

Vivian saw how devastated Padme was, and came over and nuzzled her girl.

"It's all my fault, Vivian." Padme wiped her eyes. "I didn't even know his name."

Vivian let her girl hug her, and licked her cheek, trying to comfort her.
